Wow, you sir are an absolute saint! Thanks for continuously showing us this insane degree of support!
Subbing! Just giving that tribute in the beginning of your video shows the heart your channel has. The History community has more than enough to share and appreciate together and that shoutout is but a small reminder of that.
@@royaltyblessed2454
Again, CGP Grey should really observe from other creators like you guys, reactions are okay!
@@DecadesVideoshey his name is Sam Nixon not Chris
Wait the assassins creed guy is now covering history? I had no idea
Hey Chris, Number 20 at 16:43 would be an interesting topic to do a reaction to. The guy catching a ride to the finish line is only one small part of that Olympic marathon. It was a total disaster. Among a whole bunch of things that just should never have happened; one runner had never run a marathon before and showed up in street shoes, one was poisoned, and one was chased by dogs. Jon Bois has a great video about this where he goes into great detail about everything that happened that I would highly recommend, great story teller. Looks like Blue Jay has one as well, haven't seen that one, but really enjoy his content too. Love what you do on this channel!
Pretty sure Bluejay did a video about this, too!
@@Maria_Erias I'll have to check that one out, BlueJay's great! It's a wild story!
I was just about to mention that Jon Bois video. That was the first video I watched by him that made me fall in love with his content. I would very much love to see a reaction to that video!
I agree, it's a great story!
@Austin Fangman a Jon Bois VTH crossover episode is exactly what the world needs!
‘The kind soul that is vlogging through history’
Kind soul is a very apt description of how you come across Chris.
Love your videos and they have led me to a few channels I enjoy watching.
Stalin’s hair was absolutely amazing!
Weird guy though.
The reason the Whiskey War stopped was because they wanted to show Russia that territorial disputes could be solved diplomatically. I’m sure it did nothing to help. Also I’m looking for the number for Vodka drunk. I have made some progress with calculations based off of the assigned vodka ration to soldiers.
Vodka came be made from a bunch of things. Grey Goose is a wheat vodka. Tito’s is a corn based vodka. And Ciroc is made from grapes.
Never heard of them before, thank you for introducing them! I find it funny a Self-proclaimed Monarchist saying "we," it can be interpreted at the Royal We, or.. *cues Soviet Anthem.*
This is how we share the love in the History Channel community! Awesome tribute at the beginning! History is for all of us!
14:52 related to this- a Finnish soldier, Aimo Koivunen, once consumed his patrol's entire supply of pervitin when surrounded by Soviets, in order to get enough energy to ski to safety. As a result of the delirium he got lost and went missing for an entire week.
yes! finally somebody who knows titanic was never outright called unsinkable, people effectively misheard what an irishman who worked on the ship had stated "she's as unsinkable as we could make her"
Hey Chris, love your videos! Me and my brother love history and we watch a lot of history UA-cam together, thank you for being one of them!
Dang, I wish I could share history like that. That's awesome for you guys :)
13:55 this is one I was taught at school! Our history teacher told us to ask “Alexandria where?” whenever someone mentioned it
20:40 curiously enough, French was considered the language of the elites until pretty recently. My grandad went to a school (on a scholarship, no less) where he had to choose between French and Latin as a second language. English started to get popular and trendy thanks to rock music, and became "THE" second language to learn at the majority of schools.
I’ve never been into history but this channel (as well as the wonderful community) not only sparked my interest but also made me become a history lover. I’m ever so grateful for VTH ❤.
Speaking of crazy laws, my home state of Oklahoma has a really weird one. Outlawed whaling. Besides maybe a zoo, where is a whale in a landlocked state?? The only actual whale is a wooden landmark. Legend has it that some guy got drunk, somehow had a harpoon and in a drunken spur, hunted the wooden beast.
Love decades. They are a fun way to learn history. This one was funny as well as informative. Lots of fun. Thanks for sharing.👍😁
As a fun fact, in British armoured vehicles, starting with the Centurion tank which was built in the latter stages of WW2 and just missed seeing action, it had a boiling vessel (BV) installed to brew tea and heat water (also used to store small things like biscuits). This was a response to one of the facts presented here where many casualties were caused by crews being outside and exposed whilst having a brew. Each crew has a member being dubbed as the BVC (Boiling Vessel Commander) which is usually the Loader/Radio Operator if I remember correctly. It is often referred to ask the most important piece of kit on a British armoured vehicle. Having a brew helps you stay warm and focused, so it isn't just for the fun of it.
It might not be just for the fun of it, but what a funny thought to build on stereotypes here. lol
It would be the equivalent to us Canadians having an ice rink on a carrier so we can play hockey 😁
@@aldbgbnkladg you guys dont! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So what you're saying is that the St. Gloriana Girls' College from Girls und Panzers portrays a realistic depiction of the British tankers during WWII?
Hanns-Joachim Gottlob Scharff became a mosaic artist after the war and created the mosaic inside Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World, FL
So glad I found this channel, been binging your reaction videos and started dipping my toes into your IRL content! Good narrator voice, interesting points and examples as always!
In the last 5yrs .Mongolia did a genghis kahn world tour .The chinese said if theres any mention of him invading China we will be really angry,so they didn't.
That one about the Normandy landings reminds me of a funny moment when UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown was doing a speech on Omaha beach next to Obama and accidentally called it 'Obama Beach'
Maybe he wanted to remind Obama of Hawaii
11:53 human urine was pretty important as a source on ammonia before modern chemistry, and for example with was required to treat leather. As a curiosity, the famous Manneken Pis (the peeing child) statue in Brussels is were the child urine market used to be.
Keep up the good stuff Chris
Thank you for providing such a great content in this channel ❤️
The reason the Danish - Canadian "war" came to an end in 2022 (started in 1973), was “It sends a clear signal that it is possible to resolve border disputes … in a pragmatic and peaceful way, where the all parties become winners,” in reference to the Russia invading Ukraine.
The reason of this "war" started was Denmark claimed Hans Island was not so much because of the Island itself, but if you own the Island you also own some of the surrounding Water where the is a chance of Oil or similar natural recources. The reason Denmark could make a Claim for Hand Island is because its close to Greenland.
new upload, thanks Chris! Just in time for me to enjoy in bed prior to sleeping... love what you do man, cheers from Denmark!
Have a good night 👍
“The Interrogator” about Scharf is phenomenal! He eventually gets US citizenship and was saved by the POWs he interviewed.
I believe he got to talk in the pentagon over his techniques
Another core tenant of his style of interrogation was he never directly asked questions about the information he needed. He would take POWs out for walks in the forest and in this environment they would have a low guard and accidentally slip out the information he was looking for
George V didn't change the family name to Windsor until 1917 - after the first raids by Gotha bombers. Other changes - Gustav von Holst dropped the 'von' in 1916. German shepherd dogs were renamed Alsatians, dachsunds became 'sausage dogs', the Bechstein Hall became the Wigmore Hall, and the Battenberg family became the Mountbattens.
You and mental floss got my love for history going again sir, thank you.
Polish wódka is often made from potatoes, sometimes grains like wheat, barley and rye.
The guy on the Marconi machine tried to warn the titanic about the ice. The titanic responded back "shut up I'm busy" and the Californian wouldn't respond the rest of the night..even though they were within sight of the titanic 9 miles out. Lol the words shut up never killed so many people
You can make vodka out of essentially anything. Potatoes, grain, grapes, sugar cane, the list goes on. I believe it’s know as the “dirty” spirit because of how accessible the process for making it is.
In Europe, this vid came out on May 9th, which is actually the day that Russia celebrates the end of WW2 The Soviet Union had a separate surrender with Germany on May 9th 1945.
I like these random topic reaction videos, I like hearing your opinions on topics you might not be a complete expert in. :D
I absolutely love learning about history and watching your channel!! You make learning even boring topics fun. I know you have your separate gaming channel but i dont want to distract from any good advice from other comments by asking you an unrelated question. I wanted to ask if you've ever tried any games from the Total War series of turn based strategy games??
Fun fact: the city of North Canton, Ohio used to be called New Berlin, but changed its name during WWI. You can still see some homages to the original name in the city (New Berlin Brewing Company for instance).
Hey Chris, in relation to the weird fact about the 1904 marathon in the Olympics, BlueJay has made a video about the over marathon not just the guy who won mostly by car! It is absolutely crazy and honestly that one little fact was just scratching the surface! If you get the chance to I highly recommend that video I think you’d quite enjoy it!
“Police Is that f***ing fish janga!” “NO!”
Great video, Chris!
Something very notable about Scharrf, the #21 on the list, is that he came from a family of textile workers. After the war, he was brought to America to teach his amazing interrogation techniques after all his ex-prisoners talked about how both kind but effective he was at gleaming information...
The cool thing, is that when he retired from teaching his techniques, he began a business in the US creating artwork using textiles and mosaics. You can actually see some of his best works in the most unlikely of places....
That's right, the mastermind of Luftwaffe interrogation in France, created the mosaics you can find inside Cinderella's Castle, in Florida.
Thank for the vid Chris, found out new channel. I quite recommend you also checking out Buyuuden Japanese History
pretty good videos on Japanese history using Japanese educational material, although they vary from 20 mins to 45 mins I think you quite can manage them episodically.
More of these please.
20:16 "Police! Is that fucking fish Jenga!?"
Excited for you rome trip
Vodka can be made from basically anything, I've seen it made from grain, potatoes, even carrots
Its great seeing fizhy get the spotlight underrated youtuber tbh first started watching him with his assassins creed videos
Yes, my mom told me when I was a kid that her clothes were made of flour sacks.
i was mortified.
Turns out the flour sacks were made of soft pretty fabrics, and women would fight fir the nicest patterns when the flour came into the shop.
20:04 British anthem: “May he defend our laws”
Damn right
Stalin's born name was იოსებ ჯუღაშვილი (pronounced ee-oh-seeb joo-gah-shwee-lee), but he changed his surname (as his name in his Russian documents was already changed to Russian form) to his party name Stalin (son of steel, rather than just steel) officially after October Revolution
Oh, I remember freedom fries. Which is ironic on so many levels.
Super glad to see you out on the other side of that copyright strike nonsense. I know it's not something you particularly want talked about anymore, so just enjoying seeing ya having a good time making content again!
I know I'm gonna look up the Soviet Union banning Genghis Khan one. It makes sense to a point, a lot of where he operated would be SU at that point, but what made them want to ban him? Love your videos, keep kicking as---keep rocking it!
Just want to make sure everyone knows that the whole french fry thing was erroneous and moronic. They’re actually from Belgium and they’re named after the language (French is spoken in the southern half of Belgium and in Brussels). Our doughboys brought the concept back and named it for the language of the people they’re were served by.
I’m married to a Belgian and I promised her I would mention that every time it came up :-)
About the 21st fact of the friendly interrogating german, I heard that in America the interigators use his tactics alot by being friendly and such
I think after the war he actually taught US interrogators. He had moved to the US.
Edit: you mentioned this right after I commented 😂
A more recent example of wartime renaming: from 2003-2006, the French fries at all Congressional cafeterias were renamed “freedom fries” because of America’s very public spat with France during the start of the Iraq War.
France had loudly (and cynically, in my opinion) denounced America and refused to participate in Iraq. Later on, France even left NATO for a while.
Heading over to Decades to subscribe as soon as this video is finished.
10:00 That's more fun, but now we can say that Canada has a land border with a European country. That's a trivia fact you don't need to know.
Not only that, but both Canada and Denmark used to only border one other country. (USA and Germany) Now they both border two.
RE #5 - Flour distributors at the time used cotton sacks. Flour manufacturers started printing floral and other patterns on their flour sacks, and even started printing "wash-out" patterns on the inside.
“Inception… woah, cool…”
That last fact reminded me of (IIRC) how Norway didn't have a Norwegian born King for 600 years
In World War II, England housed German officers in an estate. Where they could walk around the grounds and were treated very well. They didn’t know their conversations were being recorded.
Fact 24 created my favorite Sam O Nella bit, fish jenga
Love to see a video or unusual laws
The idea of Gandhi being Jack the Ripper is hilarious, I would support a dark comedy where he constantly tries to balance his pacifist public life with his bloodthirsty deeds at night. Maybe not with the real victims though.
Sort of like the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to use a fictional comparison.
The 1904 marathon is wild. Highly recommend pretty goods version.
Hey Chris, Resyndicated uploaded a new video about what each Presidents do for fun, it's really interesting.
"Lamest war ever"- Chris.
Chris I would love if you ever come to greece to help you visit all historic sites here!
@Vlogging Through History - If you can’t appreciate the long and vicious war between two NATO members, being fought using schnaps and bourbon ending peacefully, I’m sure you can appreciate that the dividing of Hans’ Island will provide both parties with their only second land boarder… That’s pretty cool! I am curious to know other instances of European and North American countries sharing a land boarder?
As to burlap sacks, I do know flour sacks, a much finer weave, were recycled as clothing fabric.
Hey chris! If you wanna know mote about that crazy marathon fact, jon bois, a writer for SB nation made a great video on it a beleive its called "Rat poison and brandy: the 1904 st louis olympic marathon". Hes a great story teller and i think youd get a kick out of it
George Macdonald Fraser in the notes to one of his Flashman novels, mentions the fact that he saw in the National archives Franklins name and something like agent 246,the book was published 70s early 80s
The most absurd fact I ever heard about the Titanic is that a book called Titan was written and released years before the titanic that told the story about a large ship called the titan that hit an iceberg and sunk because it did not have enough lifeboats. It was going from New York to England. There are other similarities like both were considered unsinkable. I encourage everyone to look into it.
Thanks. Please cover the Raid on Entebbe airport sometime?
20:00 POLICE! Is that F-ing Fish Jenga!
10:33 Yes the California was in the area when the Titanic sank. Hours before the Titanic sank they sent a warning to the Titanic warning them of icebergs, but the Titanic pretty much told them to shut up. So the California shut its radio off. The captain also was disgraced and his career was ruined
Decades is Fizhy! He's got a great video gaming channel where he does deep dives into RDR2 and others. Great content all around!
I knew I recognised his voice from somewhere!
17:10 was funny seeing Bluejay's video on that marathon
Kingsport TN gang! Not proud that an elephant hanging is one of the main things that we and Erwin are known for...
I visited Philadelphia last year and went on a great walking tour. They said Franklin or others were throwing the bodies down a well in one of his basements. Insane.
Benjamin Franklin is one of my favorite historical people. He lived a full life.
The fact about the french fries is kinda funny since they were invented in Belgium lol
oh, I can see it now. "This is a hold up give me all your money. I have a loaded Fish and I am not afraid to use it."
Being from tn I had never heard of the elephant one
In regards to armor in parliament and handling fish suspiciously, Vice News' youtube channel did a segment where someone broke a bunch of these laws to see if anyone would arrest him.
Also in Ohio. The town of North Canton used to be New Berlin up until World War 1.
You should watch lemmino mh370 flight disappearance its a very good breakdown to that tragedy. I love lemmino videos they're some of the highest quality docu-series on UA-cam I've ever seen.
Speaking of the Titanic. I just watched a video recently on the Gettysburg Foundation UA-cam page about a solider who fought at Gettysburg that died on the Titanic. It's the Wayne Motts presentation.
Was in Normandy for V.E. Day though not intentional, was a lot of fun
Hi, Chris, another very entertaining video. It would be fun for you to look at their American Civil War video 7 things you may not know about the American Civil War. I bet you know all of them. Number 1 is particularly fascinating I wonder if history would have been different if that had succeeded. I'd like to know your opinion on that.
Not only does he know all of them, he's related to most of the people involved 😂😂😂
My 3rd great grandfather moved to the US from Germany in the 1910s. On every census he wrote he was from Germany with the exception of 1940s in which he wrote he was from Wisconsin (where he lived since he moved to the US) I’m assuming to prevent persecution during WW2. Fascinating.
To explain the salmon law it is basically an anti-poaching law it creates an offence for any person who receives or disposes of any salmon in circumstances where they believe, or could reasonably believe, that the salmon has been illegally fished. Essentially, this is a provision aimed at reducing salmon poaching by making the handling of poached salmon a criminal offence. Fishing Salmon has quite a few regulations and laws in the UK but there's no doubt that section could have been named better :D
Jon Bois has a video called “Rat Poison and Brandy - 1904 St. Louis Olympic Marathon” that talks about Lorz and the whole race was wild!! The actual winner of the race was given strychnine and brandy during the race. It’s a story worth looking into I think if you haven’t already.
Also, it is noted that there was a big fire going on in the machine room that spread to the whole floor. That weakened the bottom walls.
If you're talking about Titanic, you are way off. There was a coal bunker fire in boiler room 5 on the starboard/right side. So they had to shift 300 tons of coal to port/left side. Which gave the ship a 5-9° list (lean) to port. The fire didn't damage the integrity of the ship. And that coal bunker fire is seen as a guardian angel of sorts. Since due to that port list, it kept her from capsizing. And where they fire was located was no where near where she ended up splitting in half. It did warp the metal of the bunker, but not the haul or watertight compartments. Her sister, Britannic, was struck by a sea mine on the starboard side around the same area as the Titanic struck the burg and capzied and sunk within 55 minutes. Compared to Titanic sinking in 2 hours and 40 minutes. And Britannic was supposed to be the ultimate form of the Olympic Class liners. Olympic had a fantastic career as a passenger and military ship. Sinking two U-Boats.
Damn Joe Steel? That’s pretty bad ass 😂
We have some bizzare laws.
About the armour one. Basically, MPs kept on getting in sword fights, so edward II thought to ban it to sway people away from these fights.
There was a law where you could legslly shoot a scotsman, with a crossbow within the walls of york.
vodka is traditionally made from rice. It CAN be made from potatoes, and one of my favorites, Monopolowa, is a potato vodka.
in germany itself, we had that too: hamburger would be considered too american and thus capitalistic for the people in east germany, so they basically made the same thing and named it Grilleta (which comes from the world "grill" which means our type of barbecue where we would put sausages and the likes on the barbeque ^^
Cool to know that my Granny was born exactly a year after VE Day. Turned 77 today!
When's the next stream VTH? love this channel
You can make Vodka from any fruit/vegetable. Anything that contains sugar. Most are made from grains, but Chopin is made from potatoes, Tito's is made from corn, and Grey Goose is made from grapes.
You should look into the 1904 olympic marathon insane story
The 1904 St. Louis Olympic Marathon was a total mess from start to finish. Another fact about that race is that the organizer of the marathon didn't believe in dehydration, so the runners were forced to run the marathon in 100 degree heat with only one water station that was not clean and poisoned multiple runners. I'd recommend the Jon Bois video about the marathon because there's so much more craziness about it from packs of wild dogs chasing runners to using rat poison as a performance enhancer.
