Joe, I have been watching photography youtube channels for several years. Just found yours. Your channel leaves everyone else in the dust for several reasons. It is clear you plan out everything. Professional approach to the audience. No tacky background settings filled with personal clutter. Just the right amount of humor. Direct subject matter content without annoying distractions. Simple explanations and demonstrations. Keep going, I'm tuning in man.
Joe, Your photos, tone and respect for the growing professional makes your series of videos absolutely amazing. Thank you for the videos, and the great work you do!
You've already saved me hours with the "How to Fix Shiny Skin" video in post. It's an average of 90°f here in Houston in the afternoons with high humidity.
OMG Joe. Just crammed in a bunch of your videos while I was debating with myself whether to persevere with photography. No formal training (learnt all I know from online) but a small part time business over the last 8 years on top of my regular job I have done 113 weddings and numerous portraits but never considered myself very good. Your enthusiasm, teaching style and videos are an inspiration and have rekindled my interest. Have all the gear just needed an injection, your it!! Thanks a bunch for your honesty and tutorials, hope you don't mind your being my mentor now. Oh, and I love the way you have replied to most of the comments, not seen that before either.
I'm a portrait photographer and shoot with a Nikkor 50mm f1.8. I'm a fairly novice photographer and just finished my second big event today. I was happy to go home and find that many of my shots were great. But I felt like such an amateur when I realized that those cool stylized shots with my subjects' heads "slightly" turned revealed why I shouldn't have been shooting with my aperture wide open. Their eyes weren't in focus with one another! I already knew if I was shooting multiple subjects I had to adjust my f stop. But I didn't think that even a slight head turn would produce such dramatic results at f 1.8. Now I know better, and I will produce better shots with BOTH eyes in focus from the tips in this video. Thank you!
Moto_rider I've had the same problem; even though I shoot cars rather than people it brings me back down to reality when only the front or back half of a car is in focus due to the shallow depth of field wide open.
Great video - Joe is both a gifted photographer AND instructor (a rare combination). Really clear/concise explanations; i.e. Why 85mm is considered a great focal length for portraits.
Just by watching this first video, trying to decide which new lens to get, I'm sold. Impressed with how in depth you got, and explained why. Instant subscribe and I will be watching more videos tonight!
At the end of the video when he recommended tokina 100mm f2.8 macro it made me smile. I just bought this lens for the exact same reason and i can concur, it is DEFINITELY sharp and is a really great focal length both for macro and for perfect portraits! Great video, thanks
I bought a Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro for macro photos but I've found that it takes amazing portraits & sports photos also. I love gear that can pull double duty if needed. Thanks for another great video Joe.
Not seen any of your videos before and know what you explained, but I have never seen it all explained so concisely and without anything missed out. You are also one hell of a photographer, and love your style, a very professional video all round and I wish I'd had you as a teacher many years ago.
I've been watching your videos for a while now, especially when I'm about to go out for shoots, and I don't know why I didn't subscribe earlier. You make your content is fun and informative, which is a win for photographers eager to learn new skills and whatnot.
Hi Joe , I am almost a daily learner on youtube to enhance my knowldege about photography. I want to appreciate your work. I like the organization of information and the way you present it. It sticks ! Keep it up !
Oh! You have answered so many questions! Thank you! I am going into my first big shoot tomorrow, and I think I can do it with the lens I have, the imagination, with the team, and to make sure the folk I am photographing are relaxed and having fun. B x
I just got this lens and along with few macro shots, I also used it for a portrait shoot recently for both face and full body shots and loved every bit of it. I am already in love with this lens. Oh yeah, subscribed too :)
I shoot portraits with a canon 85 1.8 but recently started shooting them with my canon 100 2.8 macro lens. I've even shot some indoor sporting events with the 100. I can say enough good things about that lens and focal length not to mention that it pulls double duty as a macro. Not sure why I don't hear more wedding photographers praise this lens. Great content again Joe.:-)
hello im terrol and i must say that you've given me more great and correct dead on the dime info than I've ever received on a you tube channel about photography and i love the depth of all your videos and thanks so deeply for taking time to make theses HQ VIDEOS..THANKS AGAIN
I have this lens but had only been using it for product photography until a month ago when I first saw this video. Hadn't even occurred to me for portraits but I'm very happy to say it's now my go to lens. Much less of a workout than the 80-200 f2.8 than's for sure! Ironically I was out buying a used 85mm f1.8 from someone for portraits and they threw in the Tokina for another $200. Thanks again for all of your words of wisdom. You've had a big impact on my studio work.
I also use the Tokina 100mm for portraits. My other favorites are 105 f/2.8 ai-s and 135 f/3.5 Nikkors. Thanks for tip on shooting at higher apeture. I have a tendancy to go low all the time. Thanks for all your information you give out. Great channel
Since my D5300 can't autofocus with the Tokina 100mm Macro... I got myself a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro VC. it is now the best lens I have in my collection and the go to lens, when it comes to portraiture. Thanks for the tip.
Informative video with lots of humor! It was useful and I'm glad I just purchased a Canon 100mm 2.8 macro! It is an amazing macro lens but I have yet to discover the possibilities for portraiture. Thanks!
Just after watching this video, I absolutely wanted to subscribe. I am fascinated by your style of explaining everything! You inspire me to be confident and to experiment. I'll keep watching your videos. Thanks for sharing and for transmitting such a positive attitude. 👍 ¡Adiós! 😉
I already have the Nikon 85mm 1.8 but I just bought the 100 mm Tokina and I have no regret. However, I found both to be very sharp by comparison. Thanks.
Thanks for commenting Jason Accime! I also own the 85mm f/1.8 and you are correct it is a great lens. For me the Tokina edges the Nikon just enough to be noticeable in sharpness and also a little bit in contrast which I believe adds to the perceived sharpness of the lens.
In the old 35mm film days, the best lens for portraits was my 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor prime. It was an amazingly sharp, perfect focal length portraiture lens. So now I own an Olympus DSLR system and once again, the best portrait lens I have is their Zuiko 50 mm f/2.0 Macro. Since its a Four-Thirds system, that equates to a 100mm f/2.0 lens. I've tried tele's up to 135mm for portraiture, but I feel right around 100mm just gives the most pleasing results virtually every time. Both of these lenses are completely usable at wide open aperture (or one stop down) so poor bokeh is never an issue. Bottom line, stick with a fast, high quality 100 mm lens for portraits and never worry about facial distortion or an out-of-focus opposite eye. Just make sure to get the lighting right.
"Bottom line" - thats what works for YOU Linda Dee! Be careful about how you present information as if you were an "expert". You will notice that I don't tell people what the BEST is and that is because there is no best - the best is subjective. I tell people what I use and WHY.
honestly, with my 24mm lens i've had an awesome time shooting portraits. It adds the bokeh (not as much as the 50mm) if needed as well. The distortion can be easily fixed in post, and the photo shot in raw gives amazing detail. Post is your friend though, mainly it all comes down to how you take it.
Sounds like you are shooting environmental portraits Ricky Franco ! Your not going to find anyone successfully shooting head and shoulder portraits with a 24mm - even on an APS-C - thats more distortion than I want to fix in post. But at the end pf the day - if you like the look - go for it. Be sure to subscribe so that you don't miss any videos!
super vid, keep them coming. I had same reservations about the Tokina which was on my radar years ago, after the glowing reviews the last few years I bought one, I have not looked back since, results are stunning, it is my go to lens for a lot of stuff, I also use the Nikon 135mm f2 DC
Very helpful, wish I had found you earlier. Like the simplicity and energy of your presentation. Looking for a video on light set-up for portrait and headshots.
I appreciate your kind words and comments Rick Mentore! I have quite a few videos that will help you out with portrait lighting... check out this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLF83AD3B77C7D0689.html
Nice video Joe. I have a Canon 85mm1.2LII lens. I shoot portraits with it at do larger than 2.0. It takes practice and considerable skill to shoot it at 1.2! .
Thank you. This is exactly the sort of comparison I have wanted to see. Just stumbled across your videos last week. Subscribed and have loved each one I have watched so far. Kudos!
More great advice, Joe. I'm ahead of it, so it's good to have my existing purchases confirmed. I have a crop-sensor body and I use a Canon 'nifty fifty' [EF 50mm f1.8] and a Sigma 105 macro lens. I have found that both lenses excel at portraiture when mounted to an APS-C body. For those on a budget, an entry-level crop sensor body and the nifty fifty will get you where you want to be for the least amount of dosh.
Great information. it was nice to hear you Mention the Tokina 100mm lens, I bought one and yes, it's sharp, and well built. will tune in to view your videos. Thanks again.
You just saved me a good few bob Joe. Even though I have the tokina 100mm macro which I strictly use for macro and detail shots I was still setting some pennies aside for the 135mm f2 dc which cost about a grand here. Great info from a real photographer. Thanks
More high praise for that brilliant Tokina, great video Joe I use 3 primes for my portrait photography 200mm f4, 135 3.5, and my favourite the 105 2.5 (I call it the afghan girl lens) all these are Nikon AI and AIS lenses and all are manual slows me down so I really think through the shot.
Thanks for this. I keep kicking myself at how much of my life I've wasted over Christmas break researching lenses. Was just trying to choose between the 35mm, 45mm and 85mm. (portraits). Gonna snag the 85mm and live with it and master it for several months before investing in the 70-200. Great advice...thank you.
Thank you for your videos!! I love the detail and the time taken to explain and simplify! I am a very novice photographer but I want to advance my skills and explore my abilities! Thanks again!!!
Great video again Joe. Love how you get to the point and keep it short and simple :) I go with the Nikon 85 f/1.8 D since a few years, bought it from eBay for $185. But the most important point is indeed, the quality of the image happens 2ft behind your camera. When I take pictures a a reunion with friends, they often say, it is easy for you to take great pictures, you have an expensive camera. My reaction is always here take my camera an try yourself :) Looking out for your next video and hope your macro-project was a success. The 100mm Tokina is also my goto lens for macros :)
Great video 😀 I have an tokina 24-70 and I use it for full length shoots and group shots, but I would never use it for headshoots because of the reasons you talked about. For that I have an nikon 85 1.8 and tokina 70-200
Thanks Joe, subbed straight away. Just waiting for my Tokina 100mm to arrive, wanted a macro lens, but getting the bonus of a portrait lens also, using a Nikon D500 & cant wait, cheers Trevor
Thanks for the video..it was a great and informative..I have the tokina and it is wonderful. What I have also found to be a wonderful lens is the Nikon 135 2.8 ais.
I have always loved my 70-200 @ 200mm, but think I might some time try the 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens. Doing some corporate headshots on Tuesday, so might even try it then.
Joe Edelman, I am into head shots / groups / landscapes and some nature photography. These are the 4 lenses I am interested in ... would like to buy at least 2, which would you recommend? Sigma Art 35mm 1.4, Canon 24-70mm 2.8, Canon 85mm 1.8 and the Canon 70-200 IS 2.8
Problem solving regarding the subject: you have camera and lights. If they’re not attractive? Turn off the lights 😂 Okay just kidding of course, this was a really helpful video thanks!
Excellent and instructive videos. You should hold classes on how to do UA-cam videos. Too many amateurs out there with boring, lame videos. A lot of the them lose focus on the subject and wind up rambling off the subject matter. Fantastic job, Mr. Edelman!

Also, going to buy that lens! Looks AMAZING and my camera bag has a void that will be filled very well by this lens :)
Moto_rider I've had the same problem; even though I shoot cars rather than people it brings me back down to reality when only the front or back half of a car is in focus due to the shallow depth of field wide open.
Such a helpful video. No useless stuff, just a straightforward video. Thank you Joe.

I already have the Nikon 85mm 1.8 but I just bought the 100 mm Tokina and I have no regret. However, I found both to be very sharp by comparison. Thanks.

Can you imagine - for the first time I've watched a person telling so much essential things in so short time. Amazing. Bravo! ;-)
Thank you for your videos!! I love the detail and the time taken to explain and simplify! I am a very novice photographer but I want to advance my skills and explore my abilities! Thanks again!!!
You're very welcome Emmanuel Rodriguez! Thank you so much for the kind words!
Great video again Joe. Love how you get to the point and keep it short and simple :)
I go with the Nikon 85 f/1.8 D since a few years, bought it from eBay for $185.
But the most important point is indeed, the quality of the image happens 2ft behind your camera.
When I take pictures a a reunion with friends, they often say, it is easy for you to take great pictures, you have an expensive camera. My reaction is always here take my camera an try yourself :)
Looking out for your next video and hope your macro-project was a success. The 100mm Tokina is also my goto lens for macros :)
Great video, content, presentation, and very informative.
Thank you for the kind words +KaJuan Lyonsphotography!
It's well deserved my friend! Keep making the videos and I'll keep watching and executing what you're teaching!
Loved it, many thanks
You're very welcome Karan Dhawan! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Great video 😀 I have an tokina 24-70 and I use it for full length shoots and group shots, but I would never use it for headshoots because of the reasons you talked about.
For that I have an nikon 85 1.8 and tokina 70-200
Thanks Zack and THANKS for subscribing - great to have you along for the ride! That is a nice lens kit that you have!
Thanks Joe, subbed straight away. Just waiting for my Tokina 100mm to arrive, wanted a macro lens, but getting the bonus of a portrait lens also, using a Nikon D500 & cant wait, cheers Trevor

I have always loved my 70-200 @ 200mm, but think I might some time try the 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens. Doing some corporate headshots on Tuesday, so might even try it then.
Wow, this was a great video. Thank you!
You're very welcome Evelyn M! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Joe Edelman, I am into head shots / groups / landscapes and some nature photography. These are the 4 lenses I am interested in ... would like to buy at least 2, which would you recommend?
Sigma Art 35mm 1.4, Canon 24-70mm 2.8, Canon 85mm 1.8 and the Canon 70-200 IS 2.8
Depending on your budget and what you want to carry you have several options Evelyn M - but I would recommend the zooms.
Thank you! I learned so much from this video. The information here is very well explained.
Thanks for that video.
You're welcome John Cook! I appreciate the comment!
Problem solving regarding the subject: you have camera and lights. If they’re not attractive? Turn off the lights 😂
Okay just kidding of course, this was a really helpful video thanks!
Good stuff...Thank you

Thanks Kevin Colts and THANKS for subscribing - great to have you along for the ride!
Excellent and instructive videos. You should hold classes on how to do UA-cam videos. Too many amateurs out there with boring, lame videos. A lot of the them lose focus on the subject and wind up rambling off the subject matter. Fantastic job, Mr. Edelman!
LOL - thank you for the kind words John Wojciechowski! I don't disagree with you.
