That's not really fair at all Jarrod. You should have compared both with 32gb of ram, and use the new x13 with 6th gen amd cpu with 8850 graphics, and the z13 with rtx 3080 32gb of ram. that would be fair, couse amd advantage, and they sell 6850 gpu to x13 directly next to as an offer too. :)

Hi, just checked it for you on my legion 7 with 6850m xt, amd advantage. So it seems like it really does make a difference, on full hd external monitor on high settings I'm getting ~125fps average instead of 106fps that's stated here in God of War

It is kinda weird for the 6850M to do worse in most games despite scoring slightly higher in synthetics benchmarks like 3DMark. Might be driver and optimisation issues from AMD’s side
These results are "weird". Maybe it's the way these GPUs are being used from an external closure or the 6850M simply isn't as tweaked for that closure as the year old 3080 is. The 6850M should be able to do better than this. Let's wait for the Alienware AA laptop and see how it works in there or a ROG AA down the lane.
Yeah there's definitely something weird going on, I just couldn't work out what! I tried everything I could control for like different drivers, removing possible conflicting drivers, fresh windows reset etc but no luck!
@@JarrodsTech did u check the boost clocks both the cards. If they are similar to the clocks got on other laptops with the same gpu, then noting will change.
I think it will be interesting to do the same test with flow x13 which has an AMD CPU. Having AMD CPU and GPU enables smart shift and other integrated features which may influence the results atleast at 1080P resolution.
So since I also thought these results were weird I decided to get both xg mobile GPU's and pair them with an Flow X13 to see if I'd get any different results. Heres the average fps values I got in cyberpunk. Like Jarrod's results the 3080 also had consistently higher 1% lows. I used dlss and the fsr 2.0 mod for the game since I personally don't play any games without some sort of scaling tool to get more performance. - 3080 - Cyberpunk: 4k/dlss performance - 45 fps; 1440p/dlss balanced - 70 fps; 1080p/dlss quality - 80 fps - 6850m xt - Cyberpunk: 4k/FSR 2.0 performance - 52 fps; 1440p/FSR 2.0 balanced - 63 fps; 1080p/FSR 2.0 quality- 78 fps
To follow up on this, since the latest driver updates from AMD and Nvidia I get almost the exact same performance with both of the xg mobile gpus, on both a Flow x13 and Flow z13
Just for reference, I own an X13 and a Z13 and I get 71 FPS average on Cyberpunk With ray tracing ultra at 1080p with the XG Mobile 6850M on the x13 with the Ryzen 9 6900H but I get only 39 FPS average with the same setup on the Z13 with the i9 12900k. I have the pictures to prove it as well. Using the in-game benchmark and FSR set to auto.
I'd love to see a comparison of four combinations. 12th gen i9 flow z13 (2022) and ryzen 9 6000 flow x13 (2022) each tested both with NVidia and AMD dock. Doesn't have to be so thorough, maybe just the outliers of this vid and a little more so we can get rough idea on how each combination works
These comparisons sure seem odd; the 6800M was considerably more competitive against the 3070 and 3080 last year. But this is a 165W 3080, correct? There's huge gap in performance between a (what used to be called) Max-Q 90W 3080 and a 165W 3080

Honestly, I feel like its a driver issue. Its a very new product so driver support seems to be a bit scarce at the moment plus driver conflict also seems to be happening . The stability issues in some games also seem to be pointing towards the same. Will be a bit better to revisit this comparison when 6850M Xt is available in seprate laptops

Great comparison video Jarrod! Would be interesting how these high end laptop external GPUs (Asus XG Mobile) compare with desktop GPUs (e.g. RTX 3080 Laptop vs RTX 3070 Desktop and RX 6850M vs RX 6700 XT Desktop). It would show how close the XG Mobile is compared to their desktop counterparts (on a die basis).
Its not hard to predict the results. The rtx 3080 and 3080ti are both within 10% of the desktop rtx 3070 when tweaked. The rx6800m is within 10% of a desktop rx6700xt. The rtx 3070 when tweaked would be within 10% of a desktop 3060ti. The rx6600m is within 10% of a desktop rx6600. The rtx 3060 mobile is basically within 10% of a desktop 3060, etc. The high end on laptops this time is a scam. They do not reflect high end performance at all, unlike the mobile gtx 1080 and 2080/2080 super.
Please do a comparison with the flow x13 that has an AMD CPU. I feel like laptop AMD GPUs were not tweaked properly to be running with Intel CPUs. That's of course on AMD and ASUS to fix if they are offering a product like this and I hope they do just that in hopefully a few weeks. If this performs better with an AMD CPU then, we know that platform features give cards a lot of advantages.
Depends if I get an X13, and the XG Mobile units in future haha, I had them for way too long doing this testing and ASUS needed them back to send to other people.

You should disable intel igpu in order to get Red Dead Redemption 2 running, when amd dgpu is powered. That bug exists since the game released and still did not get fixed.
Do you think that Legion 7 gen 6 with RTX 3080 and R9 is comparable with Legion 7 gen 7 RX6850M XT? Which one in your opinion is wotth getting for the same price? Is DLSS and 4GB more VRAM making much difference where gen 7 has better design, more features and still very well performing Radeon?
Couple of things for 6850M XT 1. It's performing worse than a 6800M. For sure it's the drivers. 2. It's cheaper than 3080. About 20%. 3. It can be more Asus' fault than AMD. There's no other same Laptop/EGPU which we can compare it to.
Could also be due to the RTX3050 eating up part of the laptop's power budget? Uninstalling Nvidia driver might not be the solution to this, as notoriosuly this way dGPU might go untamed at an unspecified frequency (e.g. it happens if you disable Nvidia from the device manager: it ramps up Mhz out of nowhere). Probably the Asus was able to automagically disable 3050 and turn on the 3080 (both from same vendors) while that's totally a different beast with 3050 vs Radeon eGPU. My guess.
Jarrod, will it be possible for you to test some of these games performing lower in Radeon graphics, in X13, just to make sure it is not the 12th gen platform?
Probably not, even if they send the new X13 I had to return the XG Mobile units. It could be possible to get them all in future, but it would need a lot of stuff to line up.

I would love to get the 6850m if I could get one new at MSRP but instead just bought the 3080 XG brand new for my Z13/Ally at $999 from Best Buy. Just in case something happens within the next 2 months for a full refund return period which is great since I returned a pewp 4070 FE full refund no questions asked because the coil whine was ridiculously loud. Amazon has the 6850m new but you have to buy it bundled with like the X13 3050 and I guess people that just want the X13 laptop from Amazon are selling their used 6850m on Ebay for $900+. I might as well get the 3080 XG new at BB.

With the newest laptops, what panel would you recommend? I'm seeing 240hz 1080p, 240hz 1440p, 360hz 1080p, 144hz 4K... so many options! I can see how 1440p would be a benefit for more desktop screen real estate, but it seems more realistic that these laptops, while powerful, are still better suited to 1080p gaming, right?
Either is a great choice. Stay away from Intel Alchemist GPU! South Korean UA-camrs have reviewed laptops with the A350M. 30% of the games didn’t even boot up. 30% of the remaining games would glitch during active playing. Intel GPUs have devastating driver problems!
Holy crap!! This was exactly I was looking for!!!! I have a Flow Z13 on order and I'm kind of on the fence on which one to get. Interstingly though, the R6850M XT is around $250 cheaper here in my country - we also have an XG Mobile with a 3070 and 8GB of VRAM at the same price as the 6850M XT.
Maybe test this with the Flow X13 with the AMD processors, that would be a good test to test these theories. I honestly think Asus should decrease the price on the XG Mobile and atleast make it more available. 1500 for a laptop 3080 and a few ports is too much for most people, but i honestly think that this formfactor/setup will be more popular in the future, as long as we can get the pcie lanes, maybe Asus can also release an XG external GPU enclosure like the old XG station for connecting desktop GPUs just like alienware had a few years back, 8xgen 4 ports should be enough for most card to reach their full potential. i hope they do this stuff in the next gen Flows

Just picked up the 3080 for my Rog Ally and looking forward to seeing the difference i get from the built in gpu. But that said ive been inpressed with the allys performance. But with my new 4K tv and playing docked alittle more thought ide get this GPU.
I'm also curious as to how the 3080 XG Mobile compares to Thunderbolt eGPU enclosures. The Thunderbolt route definitely adds additional variables making it hard to compare apples-to-apples (different graphics card options, and different enclosure options), but I'm curious how the 4 PCIe lanes + higher wattage of a desktop GPU compare vs the 8 PCIe lanes and 150ish watt mobile GPU on the XG Mobile side.
I've seen a few videos, they're rare & don't do direct comparisons like this video, but generally the XG mobile kicks the ish out of Tbolt external gpu. The tb4 egpu did seem to do 4k better in most metrics due to the increased power limit, but generally response time & frame times were better on the asus proprietary connection egpu
12:00 Idk if you were running RDR2 in DX11 or Vulkan, but I’ve had laptops where Vulkan games refuse to launch until I reinstalled the AMD software and drivers.
That's quite expected actually, seeing on the spec sheet as 6850mxt has same tech spec with 6800m except frequency clock, it is just a AMD officially OCed 6800m
Nice comparison and I appreciate the work you've been doing over the years, can you potentially do a comparison on performance vs power usage? I was looking into getting a new fully "team red" laptop, but seeing the results I do not think that Radeons are energy efficient (Watt/FPS), what's the best combo for performance and energy efficiency standpoint? I was thinking that maybe a power-limited 3080Ti or 3080 or even 3070ti + a Ryzen 6800/6900?
Definitely and thermals too. Perhaps a fundamental change in architecture, technology and software is what is needed. I mean if the rumors are true next gen desktop gpus are drawing ridiculous amounts of power. Also mobile pc gaming may become the main way to game in the future so AMD, Nvidia have too seriously consider that as well.
I kept looking throughout the video, but I can't seem to find if mentioned the ACTUAL TDP settings the eGPUs use (better info that whatever the max official specs say) and if you measured their actual draw during a few games. Hmmm...

Were the 3080 numbers the same as last time? NVIDIA drivers have boosted performance in 2022 so far, not without issues/bugs, but certain titles have had big boosts such as Far Cry 6 and AC Odyssey.

e-gpu´s are a waste of money, the bandwidth of Thunderbolt is just not quick enough to give you enough of a performance uplift to make it worth while....
You should always compare them also on games like you compared on content creation, like the bars are red and green as are the cards, that is so much easier to read. but good coparison, i was thinking about buying with 6850xt but now i dont see any reasons if my laptop already has 3070ti in it.
Would an external GPU be better? Yes, it wouldn't have the full bandwidth the proprietary connection provides, but it is still a mobile video card rather than the full version in an EGPU
It is shown to be worse, it’s been tested with a 3080 mobile vs 3080 desktop, the thunderbolt port was a massive bottle neck the 3080 mobile handheldly thrashed the desktop variant in I think all categories. Probably need one or two more generations of thunderbolt/USB to offer the same kind of bandwidth as PCIE and other things.
yep.the result is strange..driver issue or some problems..also the power consumption in AMD side is just so high while doesn't improve performance to it's rival with lower TGP

I'm kinda disapointed in the XG Mobile. At first I thought it's an external enclosure with a proprietory PCIe connection for some ROG ntoebooks to rid the eGPU bandwidth issues. But now I understand that you choose the XG Mobile already with a certain graphics card installed and you can't change it or upgrade in the future. That really sucks, why would they do that?
Recently I decided to buy a new laptop - after watching LOTS of videos (your videos were an invaluable help) I chose the ASUS ROG Flow 16. In my area, both the laptop itself and the bundle "Flow X16 R9 32G RTX3070Ti + RX6850M" (external) are easily available in. Does such a bundle even make sense? The RTX3070Ti itself is pretty decent, does adding the extra RX6850M to it have any logical advantages?

Anyone have any recent experience with the 6850 xg mobile? Debating it at its new $800 us price tag but I don't like the sound of it here. Kind of hoping 7 months of driver updates would have fixed some issues but not sure I'm ready to take the risk.
I think it might be possible that at higher power states GA 104 might just be more efficient then Navi 22, the Desktop cards with those dies certainly reflect that I think. But we'll probably need to see another 6850M XT to be sure of course.
Is there something strange going on with the use of the onboard Nvidia GPU and the external AMD GPU, us there something strange going on with sharing the workloads, would the new upcoming all AMD version with the on board Vega gfx make a difference perhaps? Look forward to your benchmarks if you manage to do that.
I really like AMD as a company, at least since the Zen Architecture was released but in terms of GPU's a specially mobile ones, it's just bad, availability of Laptops running AMD GPUs is extremely low, there is just a handful of models running any type of AMD GPU, which is just a shame, I was super hyped about RX6600m and RX6800m just to realise there is only like 2 or 3 laptops in total with these, not much to choose from, prices are often too high for what it is offering, disappointment. In this Benchmarks I believe AMD would perform slightly better when paired with AMD CPU, but that's just my opinion.
I'm very curious as to why not just get a AMD Advantage laptop like the Lenovo Legion 7 with 6850M XT/6900HX and any number of Alienware, MSI Raider or Razer Blade 18 with i7's/i9's and 3080ti and 3080 gpus'? By the way which the Lenovo Legion 7 AMD Advantage laptop outperforms 80% of those configurations and either matching or within 90% of the other variants..

The reason I'm asking it is that I think there r a lot of engineering students like me who cannot afford workstation laptops so then they'll lean towards gaming laptops. I think a fairer test would have been if you had the Flow with an Iris XE GPU instead of one with the 3050.
Also on pricing, in my country the 3080 XG Mobile is $400 USD more expensive than the 6850 version.

I think the consideration for smart access and smart shift need to be made. The 6800m is paired withe the Ryzen CPU utilizing those features.

Indeed I have 6800M advantage Edition and my laptop performance is better than 6850M XT and it's similar to 3080 fps something is wrong with 6850M.
It's 6800m with higher power limit and slightly over clocked .same chip used in 6700XT.

Would be interesting how these high end laptop external GPUs (Asus XG Mobile) compare with desktop GPUs (e.g. RTX 3080 Laptop vs RTX 3070 Desktop and RX 6850M vs RX 6700 XT Desktop). It would show how close the XG Mobile is compared to their desktop counterparts (on a die basis).
Its not hard to predict the results. The rtx 3080 and 3080ti are both within 10% of the desktop rtx 3070 when tweaked. The rx6800m is within 10% of a desktop rx6700xt. The rtx 3070 when tweaked would be within 10% of a desktop 3060ti. The rx6600m is within 10% of a desktop rx6600. The rtx 3060 mobile is basically within 10% of a desktop 3060, etc.
The high end on laptops this time is a scam. They do not reflect high end performance at all, unlike the mobile gtx 1080 and 2080/2080 super.
We need an update to this video using the ROG Ally as more options over the 4090.
Please do a comparison with the flow x13 that has an AMD CPU. I feel like laptop AMD GPUs were not tweaked properly to be running with Intel CPUs. That's of course on AMD and ASUS to fix if they are offering a product like this and I hope they do just that in hopefully a few weeks. If this performs better with an AMD CPU then, we know that platform features give cards a lot of advantages.
Can you carry out a couple of these tests using the Flow X13 with both graphics enclosures? Would be... interesting to see if there was a difference.
Depends if I get an X13, and the XG Mobile units in future haha, I had them for way too long doing this testing and ASUS needed them back to send to other people.
Any way you could revisit this given the improvements to firmware and drivers for the 6850M? Could throw in the 4090 version as well :D
If there are nvidia 4000 series mobile GPUs in the future, did asus mention they'll manufacture xg mobiles with those GPUs with the same cable as well?

You should disable intel igpu in order to get Red Dead Redemption 2 running, when amd dgpu is powered. That bug exists since the game released and still did not get fixed.
Indeed the game starts but the performances are atrocious strangely with the RX6850M on RDR2...

Do you think that Legion 7 gen 6 with RTX 3080 and R9 is comparable with Legion 7 gen 7 RX6850M XT? Which one in your opinion is wotth getting for the same price? Is DLSS and 4GB more VRAM making much difference where gen 7 has better design, more features and still very well performing Radeon?
Couple of things for 6850M XT
1. It's performing worse than a 6800M. For sure it's the drivers.
2. It's cheaper than 3080. About 20%.
3. It can be more Asus' fault than AMD. There's no other same Laptop/EGPU which we can compare it to.
Could also be due to the RTX3050 eating up part of the laptop's power budget? Uninstalling Nvidia driver might not be the solution to this, as notoriosuly this way dGPU might go untamed at an unspecified frequency (e.g. it happens if you disable Nvidia from the device manager: it ramps up Mhz out of nowhere). Probably the Asus was able to automagically disable 3050 and turn on the 3080 (both from same vendors) while that's totally a different beast with 3050 vs Radeon eGPU. My guess.
How it's drivers when using same architecture? Drivers will make a difference if 1 or 2 games not all games that show (consistent) results

Probably not, even if they send the new X13 I had to return the XG Mobile units. It could be possible to get them all in future, but it would need a lot of stuff to line up.

I would love to get the 6850m if I could get one new at MSRP but instead just bought the 3080 XG brand new for my Z13/Ally at $999 from Best Buy. Just in case something happens within the next 2 months for a full refund return period which is great since I returned a pewp 4070 FE full refund no questions asked because the coil whine was ridiculously loud. Amazon has the 6850m new but you have to buy it bundled with like the X13 3050 and I guess people that just want the X13 laptop from Amazon are selling their used 6850m on Ebay for $900+. I might as well get the 3080 XG new at BB.

With the newest laptops, what panel would you recommend? I'm seeing 240hz 1080p, 240hz 1440p, 360hz 1080p, 144hz 4K... so many options! I can see how 1440p would be a benefit for more desktop screen real estate, but it seems more realistic that these laptops, while powerful, are still better suited to 1080p gaming, right?
1440p and 165hz is the sweet spot

I'm not sure why it would matter though, the Intel machine still allowed it to use Resizeable BAR, at least according to GPU-Z.
Either is a great choice. Stay away from Intel Alchemist GPU! South Korean UA-camrs have reviewed laptops with the A350M. 30% of the games didn’t even boot up. 30% of the remaining games would glitch during active playing. Intel GPUs have devastating driver problems!
Holy crap!! This was exactly I was looking for!!!! I have a Flow Z13 on order and I'm kind of on the fence on which one to get. Interstingly though, the R6850M XT is around $250 cheaper here in my country - we also have an XG Mobile with a 3070 and 8GB of VRAM at the same price as the 6850M XT.
Get the Radeon then. No brainer.

Maybe test this with the Flow X13 with the AMD processors, that would be a good test to test these theories. I honestly think Asus should decrease the price on the XG Mobile and atleast make it more available. 1500 for a laptop 3080 and a few ports is too much for most people, but i honestly think that this formfactor/setup will be more popular in the future, as long as we can get the pcie lanes, maybe Asus can also release an XG external GPU enclosure like the old XG station for connecting desktop GPUs just like alienware had a few years back, 8xgen 4 ports should be enough for most card to reach their full potential. i hope they do this stuff in the next gen Flows

Just picked up the 3080 for my Rog Ally and looking forward to seeing the difference i get from the built in gpu. But that said ive been inpressed with the allys performance. But with my new 4K tv and playing docked alittle more thought ide get this GPU.
I'm also curious as to how the 3080 XG Mobile compares to Thunderbolt eGPU enclosures. The Thunderbolt route definitely adds additional variables making it hard to compare apples-to-apples (different graphics card options, and different enclosure options), but I'm curious how the 4 PCIe lanes + higher wattage of a desktop GPU compare vs the 8 PCIe lanes and 150ish watt mobile GPU on the XG Mobile side.
I've seen a few videos, they're rare & don't do direct comparisons like this video, but generally the XG mobile kicks the ish out of Tbolt external gpu. The tb4 egpu did seem to do 4k better in most metrics due to the increased power limit, but generally response time & frame times were better on the asus proprietary connection egpu
12:00 Idk if you were running RDR2 in DX11 or Vulkan, but I’ve had laptops where Vulkan games refuse to launch until I reinstalled the AMD software and drivers.
That's quite expected actually, seeing on the spec sheet as 6850mxt has same tech spec with 6800m except frequency clock, it is just a AMD officially OCed 6800m

I was looking into getting a new fully "team red" laptop, but seeing the results I do not think that Radeons are energy efficient (Watt/FPS), what's the best combo for performance and energy efficiency standpoint? I was thinking that maybe a power-limited 3080Ti or 3080 or even 3070ti + a Ryzen 6800/6900?

Perhaps a fundamental change in architecture, technology and software is what is needed.
I mean if the rumors are true next gen desktop gpus are drawing ridiculous amounts of power. Also mobile pc gaming may become the main way to game in the future so AMD, Nvidia have too seriously consider that as well.

Were the 3080 numbers the same as last time? NVIDIA drivers have boosted performance in 2022 so far, not without issues/bugs, but certain titles have had big boosts such as Far Cry 6 and AC Odyssey.

e-gpu´s are a waste of money, the bandwidth of Thunderbolt is just not quick enough to give you enough of a performance uplift to make it worth while....
So is there anything else this gpu can work on aside from the flow or the ally? Itd be solid if it had a TB 4 adapter.
AMD Drivers on windows really suck! I have to install hackintosh, in order to drive my RX 6800 to play 8k video on UA-cam.
You should always compare them also on games like you compared on content creation, like the bars are red and green as are the cards, that is so much easier to read. but good coparison, i was thinking about buying with 6850xt but now i dont see any reasons if my laptop already has 3070ti in it.

Yes, it wouldn't have the full bandwidth the proprietary connection provides, but it is still a mobile video card rather than the full version in an EGPU
It is shown to be worse, it’s been tested with a 3080 mobile vs 3080 desktop, the thunderbolt port was a massive bottle neck the 3080 mobile handheldly thrashed the desktop variant in I think all categories.
Probably need one or two more generations of thunderbolt/USB to offer the same kind of bandwidth as PCIE and other things.

I'm kinda disapointed in the XG Mobile. At first I thought it's an external enclosure with a proprietory PCIe connection for some ROG ntoebooks to rid the eGPU bandwidth issues. But now I understand that you choose the XG Mobile already with a certain graphics card installed and you can't change it or upgrade in the future.

Recently I decided to buy a new laptop - after watching LOTS of videos (your videos were an invaluable help) I chose the ASUS ROG Flow 16. In my area, both the laptop itself and the bundle "Flow X16 R9 32G RTX3070Ti + RX6850M" (external) are easily available in. Does such a bundle even make sense? The RTX3070Ti itself is pretty decent, does adding the extra RX6850M to it have any logical advantages?

I think it might be possible that at higher power states GA 104 might just be more efficient then Navi 22, the Desktop cards with those dies certainly reflect that I think. But we'll probably need to see another 6850M XT to be sure of course.

Is there something strange going on with the use of the onboard Nvidia GPU and the external AMD GPU, us there something strange going on with sharing the workloads, would the new upcoming all AMD version with the on board Vega gfx make a difference perhaps? Look forward to your benchmarks if you manage to do that.
I really like AMD as a company, at least since the Zen Architecture was released but in terms of GPU's a specially mobile ones, it's just bad, availability of Laptops running AMD GPUs is extremely low, there is just a handful of models running any type of AMD GPU, which is just a shame, I was super hyped about RX6600m and RX6800m just to realise there is only like 2 or 3 laptops in total with these, not much to choose from, prices are often too high for what it is offering, disappointment.
In this Benchmarks I believe AMD would perform slightly better when paired with AMD CPU, but that's just my opinion.
Could it be that the G15 AE had Ryzen-Radeon resizeable bar ? Does the Z14 have rebar enabled (I've heard full AMD rebar/SAM worked better) ?

I'm very curious as to why not just get a AMD Advantage laptop like the Lenovo Legion 7 with 6850M XT/6900HX and any number of Alienware, MSI Raider or Razer Blade 18 with i7's/i9's and 3080ti and 3080 gpus'? By the way which the Lenovo Legion 7 AMD Advantage laptop outperforms 80% of those configurations and either matching or within 90% of the other variants..

Hello again. The same person who asked for a 3d modeling benchmarks list in your videos. Some of the common apps r Auto CAD, solid works, Auto desk 3d max and MATLAB. The reason I'm asking it is that I think there r a lot of engineering students like me who cannot afford workstation laptops so then they'll lean towards gaming laptops.
