  • Manufacturers are moving away from watches as trackers. Is it time for Garmin to catch up with the rest of the industry? Would you want to shed the bulk or look of a watch for 24/7 wear?
    I take a look at two possible avenues for Garmin to move forward into this latest fitness tracking trend.
    Garmin Gear I use:
    Epix Gen 2: amzn.to/3QNhos6
    HR Pro Plus: amzn.to/3yiJyVB
    Index S2 Smart Scale - amzn.to/4aL1NkO
    Starter Home Gym Equipment:
    Forearm Guard (for KB beginners) - amzn.to/48Q77l1
    Kettlebell - amzn.to/3TcrHq8
    Jump Rope - amzn.to/48txU6D
    Gymnastics Rings - amzn.to/3UNWADu
    Dumbbells - amzn.to/3I8hSUP
    Workout Mat - amzn.to/42P12Uu
    Resistance Bands - amzn.to/3SGTb6I

    I need either ring or strap, so I can wear my mechanical watches without losing data that I like, but I do agree they need to work on syncing between multiple devices first. I had brief experience when changing from 945 to fenix 7 few months ago, and it wasnt pretty

    100% agreed. I got a Fenix for every day use, for sport, but I often don't wear it at night. With a ring, I could track some data while sleeping. A GARMIN RING IS WHAT I WANT!

    I would have a garmin Strap - i want the apple watch for the smart function of it, but i love my garmin too much and the data side of things so I can’t use an Apple Watch, so if there was a strap i could wear it while having my Apple Watch as my daily watch, that way i still get the data as well as a good smart watch - then switch it up when i go on a hike or bike ride where i need the map function in the garmin.

    I say, let the market dictate what they want. I do prefer to wear the least amount of devices a possible. Hopefully they keep making improvements on sensor tech so you only need to wear one device. But if there is a practical reason why I need to wear a strap or a ring for now to give me a more accurate or consistant reading that is fine with me. Maybe they could try a flat device with multiple sensors that attaches to our clothing maybe with a magnet like some lapel microphones do for daily use or activities.

    Which would be more consistent, sensitive or reliable for tracking data, the watch, the ring or the band? Such that if one wore one of each would one get the same data readout? I know even though everything goes through Garmin Connect, there are multiple instances where my watch says take a rest day but my Garmin 1030+ says to go do an interval session.

    Since I prefer wearing a mechanical watch on working days, I ended up buying the Vivosmart 5 shown in the video. BUT I ordered a nylon watchstrap and wear it around my ankle. That way I works fine in monitoring my heartrate, stress level etc without me having to go double wristed. Unfortunately there aren’t many options for straps that can go around your ankle and the Vivosmart 5 is unnecessary thick due to the screen.
    So I would jump on anything Garmin would sell that allows me to measure stats (preferably also HRV sleep) around my upper arm, ankle or finger.

    I have the whoop and about 6 different garmin products . I still prefer my automatic watches. So the only option I have is vivosmart 4 which I have 2 colors that I use on the other wrist to access my Garmin connect. The small auto scrolling display is perfect for notifications. Hope Garmin can update the vivosmart 6 to a sleeker design with elevate sensor and GPS that is more accurate

    Hey cheers Dave. I have a nice mechanical watch, so I double up, using the Vivosmart 5, as per your video. I looked at Whoop, but the monthly subscription put me off, plus my allegiance to Garmin Connect pushed me to Vivosmart 5. Please, not a ring.
    The only reason the watch can be annoying is during sports where it could get damaged. Not gonna use kettlebells while wearing it.
    A ring would free my wrist but take out even more exercises, all barbell , dumbbell, tracking bar ,... exercises.
    A secondary sensor for example on the biceps would be perfect, free up the wrist and also keep the hands/fingers free
    ✌️

    • @DaveDoesFitness
      @DaveDoesFitness  Місяць тому

      That's an interesting take about a secondary sensor to wear elsewhere. The whoop strap sells exactly that, an armband as well as apparel where it can slot into the waistband. I was definitely envisioning the ring usage as a casual tracker that wouldn't take the place of a watch for an activity. You make some great points though. Thanks for watching!

    personally I would appreciate if garmin would come ot with a whoop competitor product. I like the idea, that the techniqie is easy to take out and put it on hidden places like underwear for example.
    A ring I wouldn’t buy….i think for cycling it’s bad when you wear them and you crash. In addition it’s very annoying with charging…i mean an other ring size leads normally to a different charger for the ring. So if you forget your charging the device it is less likely that someone can help you out

  • @ricardomorales1039
    @ricardomorales1039 24 дні тому

    1st a screenless band or a clip on for underwear, if not, well a ring is better than anything. i usually wear my Epix in my ankle when i use any watch on my collection, so, mostly i wear it on my wrist only to go to the gym or to go to sleep. I bought a vivosmart, but the sad compatibility of most metrics makes it a bit useless so i hardly wear it anymore, only when using shorts.

    Hello, and thanks for your thoughts. From my perspective I don't see Garmin in this direction going. The company has been positioned to address the needs of ambitioned amateurs athletes and professional athletes. I would assume that they are going further in this direction. New products I could imagineare: blood sugar meter, additional bike sensors, sensors to measure swimming form.

    • @DaveDoesFitness
      @DaveDoesFitness  Місяць тому +1

      I could definitely see further development in health monitoring equipment similar to their blood pressure cuff or existing cycling accessories. I'd absolutely love it if they did a lactate testing monitor. Thanks for watching! 💪🏃

    In love with my MK3i. I feel naked when I need to take it off to charge every 2 or 3 weeks, but there are some moments where I wish I could continue to monitor Garmin Connect data while wearing a mechanical watch instead, especially at formal work meetings. A Garmin smart ring with physio trueup could potentially solve this.

    • @DaveDoesFitness
      @DaveDoesFitness  Місяць тому +1

      I've semi hacked the mechanical watch conundrum with a Vivosmart 5. It's a band, that's just discrete enough, that it doesn't seem weird to have a mechanical watch on one hand and athe garmin band on the other.

    • @amradelamin
      @amradelamin Місяць тому +3

      @@rxl77 I think one of the other things Garmin has to address is real syncing across multiple Garmin devices. Physio TrueUp doesn’t sync body battery, and if my memory isn’t failing me, I think HRV status requires consistent per-device wearing?

      The vivosmart 5 does HRV but is limited in the data it displays. It won't show overnight or real-time HRV stats. It only shows a 7 day average. But fully agree, the killer unlock is to have fully functional multiple device syncing. FWIW, I do have an Instinct 2 which I wear most of the time and will wear the VS5 when I want to wear a mechanical watch out - and the Garmin sync connect works pretty well between the two. I don't really see any double counting and the data tends to sync up nicely when they pair to the app.

    You are missing something very important when comparing Garmin to the other brands, and that is the moment others came up with solution for longer battery life, more and more of Garmin customers will switch to their respective alternatives, because Garmin lacks of many current features (available in other watches, for example), stable and more or less precise software (see their forum to see whats going on with their buggy software and tons of bugs which never being fixed), customer support (again, see the tons of complaints in their forums) and so on and so forth. Even if they produce a ring, who can guarantee that ring will be direct competitor to Galaxy ring, Aura or something else?

    • @DaveDoesFitness
      @DaveDoesFitness  Місяць тому +1

      That could definitely be true, but I'd say the "fitness band" form factor popularized by Fitbit (similar to vivo active) was the fad form factor of the last decade and it had some staying power and made a lot of money. Who knows? 🤷
      Where can I learn more about their R&D or these patches?

    • @nathancragg6202
      @nathancragg6202 Місяць тому +1

      @@DaveDoesFitness I think back to sales 101, are we really selling the form factor or the data? And in my mind watches are both, Fitbit/Whoop/Aura are exclusively the data. If data is the true selling point then we have to think outside of current form factors into least intrusive and least visible; hence patches.
      I’m not sure that Garmin is going that route just yet, but with recent technology of CGM’s, sweat patches combined with decades le ‘smart clothing’, we’re probably not far from semi-disposable patches, eventually leading to clothing doing most the tracking

    These are good ideas/ alternatives however it depends on accuracy, battery life and costs! I've always worn a watch. I feel like I'm missing something when it's not on my wrist. I own many an I change them up daily and their bands. With the younger generations it more a fade the function as they like in the smartphone era. Garmin need to step up their game and get with the program! Smart rings are not it! They must make all their watches with OLED displays with more face options today. The days of a $1400 smartwatch are coming to a quick END! Just like sunglasses market when they could charge $800, now the same or better sunglasses are costing $40 a decade later! With so many new manufactures in the smartwatch market the competition has already become fierce. As these other smartwatch companies in the next year, start to make watches that are accurate with as long charge- times for under $400, Garmin could get lost in time.

      the thing is that a "companion" sensor, should be one more product, not the only one. so i guess there are people who love to wear a smart watch for everything, and those who like to have a healt monitor always, but not necesarilly a screen all the times like me.
