- In this video I review the Aputure Amaran 200d daylight COB light, and compare it to the Godox SL200W II and Nanlite Forza 200.
We'll look at build quality, brightness & color accuracy, fan noise, and other pros and cons to determine whether the Aputure Amaran 200d (as well as the 100d, 100x, and 200x) are the best budget LED lights you can buy.
Some people went so far as to call these new lights the end of Godox, but we'll see about that...

You're welcome! I find lux confuses a lot of people because they see something like 4000 lux vs 6000 lux and think it's an insanely big difference when it's just half a stop, so I'm glad it's helpful :)

Godox killer or not, it's great to have more competition in the budget space!
UPDATE: I overlooked the fact that these lights DO support special effects, but only through the Sidus Link mobile app. So it's bad that you can't access them on the back panel, but good that you at least have the mobile option.

Incredible review! Was about to buy the ml60 because the 120dmk2 was out of my budget but seeing aputures budget lights that work with the Sidus link is such a value! Also close to the same price as the ml60. Thank you aputure, coming in clutch!

THANK YOU so much for adding the actual in-camera settings for use with these lights into the video, that's actually so incredibly helpful as somebody not intimately familiar with working with lighting equipment and it makes it all so much more understandable. @@muhameddelic1819 Thanks! I try to bring some kind of energy to my videos, but I am naturally a pretty "boring" and monotone person and don't try to be anything else.
I still use the Intellytech LC-160RGBW II as my key light in my office because I have the specific need to mount it to my desk and fold it flat against the wall. For COBs I am constantly using different ones because I like to get to know them well before doing videos, so it's different every month :)
Great job again! I am thinking of selling my VL150 and returning my VL300 for 2x 200D's. I don't need any of the fancy features but Caleb's review he mentions the fan noise on the 200d being a dealbreaker. And Gerald said that neither are good enough to take on/off set; mainly static setups for UA-camr's. Both opinions seem like a stretch, but obviously build quality and noise are some of the most important things.
Thanks! And yeah, fan noise is a bit of personal choice, which is why I try to give you some benchmarks by recording the audio and sharing it in my videos. Almost everything I talk to agrees that the Godox SL II and VL lights have the quietest fans, and in my testing, the 200d is right around the same level. Of course, fan noise varies across individual units, but in my testing, if you're happy with those Godox lights, the 200d is functionally the same, just puts out different frequencies.
Build quality is above average, nothing crazy though. The Godox lights are better built in my opinion, but if you're keeping them in a studio or something it wouldn't matter at all.

Great review! Love your channel... I’ve heard from other reviewers that their sample had pretty bad fan noise, I’m wondering if it’s on an individual basis. Still ordered one 😂
Thanks! And yes, I've seen some comments about that. I can only speak on my experience, and share the fan noise recordings I took. For mine, it's the same as the Godox SL II/VL series, which are widely considered some of the quietest lights out there. There is either a lot of variation between individual units, or we've become accustomed to fans so quiet than anything not close to silent is considered loud now.

@@NewLayer from what little I've seen so far, it seems that they do! Godox also released the tl60 tube lights with those Roscoe and Lee gel presets, dunno where they stand against competition though 😁
@@akshaykumar_r I have a few lights like the Falconeyes F7 Fold and the Luxli RGB lights that have gel presets too. They get you close, but I wouldn't trust any light to be perfectly matched to gelled lights either way.

There's a "je ne sais quoi" I've had with the Forza series. Always leaned towards it over the Godox lights. At 1/2 price of the Forza 200 it can be a real contender...
Nanlite does have a sexiness factor over many other brands! The Forza 200 is more of a premium light than the Amaran series, but if you look solely at brightness/color accuracy they are almost neck and neck.
Great video and huge thanks for showing f-stops and exposure values! Lux in my opinion for whom don't work with lights isn't helpful to understand what exposure you'll get with a light.
I really appreciated your video because of that.
Although I've noticed at 2:58 the 200x you said it's 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop dimmer than the 200d.
From f/8 on the 200d to f/5.6 on the 200x would be a full stop, not 2/3 of a stop.
Anyway, I'm getting a set of three lights for my personal projects, I'm considering the 200d and two 100d to have a nice set.
I was going for the X bicolour version although I'll use them in a controlled lighting condition.
I still wonder if as an investment having the flexibility of changing colour temperature would be a better choice.

For a controlled scenario, I like having bi-color functionality, at least for the light I use for back or rim/hair light.
Do the 100/200 series lights turn on when plugged in? "Studio mode" on the 60d/x I believe they call it. Would love to be able to switch a smart power outlet via home automation to control the light.
Nice video bro but I think I am going to buy the Godox VL150 forvtge build quality which I feel will help is last over the year. The concern I had with tbe Amaran I'd that one YuuTuber managed to to crack the light stand fitted which made me think how long a plastic body light would last. Always appreciate you reviews 🙂
The VL150 build quality and mounting yoke is definitely stronger. Plus it supports regular v-mounts and comes with a carrying case, so it does have some advantages over the Amaran lights like you mentioned. A lot of it just depends on current prices, and what your priorities are. Hope that helps :)

As always, great video! I litteraly confused now, i have to choose between Godox SL150W II, Aputure Amaran 100D, Godox SL200W II, and Aputure Amaran 200D. I need "one" light as my main light, replacing my Godox SL60W that doesn't bright enough for my workneeds. I need a light that can accomodate to outdoor and indoor needs. I'll attach it with Godox SB-UE 120CM which i have probably had.
In your point of view, which light do i have to choose?

If you're looking to shoot outdoors, I would get one of the 200 watt lights for sure. They will be ~2 full stops brighter than the SL60W.
The SL200W II is quieter and has a better build quality, but the Amaran 200d is slightly more color accurate and has Sidus Link control, so it just depends on what your priorities are and their current pricing.
Keep in mind that during day time, even a 200 watt light isn't going to be bright enough to use as a key light if you have a softbox on it. A sunny day proper exposure is ISO 100, 1/125 second, and ~f/16, which is extremely bright, and only strobes can overpower the sun.
If you're working in the shade, then a 200 watt continuous light in a softbox can get the job done if it's pretty close to the subject. If you're using the stock reflector, then you're good to go. Hope that helps :)
Great comparison! In your opinion what do you think would be the best light for the purpose of corporate interviews with some light traveling, also battery and portability is important, I try to keep my set up as light and simple as possible.
Glad you liked it. If you already have v-mounts, the Godox VL150/200/300 is hard to beat because it includes a case and has v-mount support, whereas the Amaran COB lights do not. The VL series sounds like what would be best for your needs.
I think Godox could really step up and stay relevant with a mobile app. I do think these lights are a great option. I was looking into getting some new lights and I'm pretty sure these are the ones I'm gonna pick up. I will either pick up two 100d or one 100d and one 200d. I shoot a lot of one-man-band videos for clients so not having a solid case is disappointing but I'll just have to build one myself. The one thing that bugs me about new tech and equipment coming out is it's never in stock or preorder.
Godox does actually have a mobile app, and it has worked well for me using the VL and UL series of lights. Aputure's is much better because it's a unified system across all their products though.
These lights were planned to be available yesterday, but COVID has crushed manufacturing, so there's just a slight delay. I believe you can preorder on B&H and Adorama though, at least when I clicked through on my links it appeared so.

Edit: For general use on a budget, which light should one get, the Nanlite FS-150 or this Amaran 200D?
Aputure Amaran, Nanlite FS, and Godox SL II are my favorite 150-300 watt lights, each one having its advantages.
1. Amaran main selling point is having Sidus Link app control, which is great if you have any other Aputure lights.
2. Nanlite FS series is cheapest for the output and has the AC adapter integrated into the head, unlike the Amaran lights, so it's just the head unit and 1 power cord. The new Nanlite app will control the FS lights, and should be released in the next 2-3 months I've heard.
3. Godox SL II has a "fan off" mode that runs the light silently at 35% or less power. Also has an integrated AC adapter. Unless you REALLY need the fan off mode, I'd go the FS series over this one.
So it comes down to prioritizing Sidus link Vs. total budget in my opinion, plus whatever is currently available and on sale.

Could you tell a few words about how power of COB light correlates with Softbox size? I am planning to shoot "talking head/torso" behind a table and against a wall, and been thinking of aputure light dome mini II or SE, but what power COB light would be adequate (which may be used with a larger softbox in future) 60/100/120/150/200 and wont have to blast at 100% power all the time? 🤔🤷🏻♂️ Thank you for your help!

A 60 watt light with a 32-36" softbox works well for talking head videos if it's a few feet away, and there's no ambient light. I use a Nanlite Forza 60 for a long time at 35% power (although in a 24" softbox) for my setup. I shot at 1/50, ISO 800, f/2.8.
If you are fighting against any ambient light, then I would recommend 100-200 watts. Having too much power at your disposal is never a bad thing, so I typically recommend getting the brightest light you can afford.

They've released a firmware update to help with fan noise. Mine was never noisy to begin with so I honestly can't comment much on it but...

Amazing video! How much runtime do you get with the p50 power station and the 200D?
Thanks! You would get roughly 2.25 hours at 100% power using a 200d and a Tacklife P50. The main issue is that the P50 supports 300 watts continuous power, so you couldn't use both outlets to power 2 x 200d, but you could use it to power 2 x 100d, or maybe a single 100d and single 200d together, especially at less than 100% brightness. Hope that helps :)
Out of interest with the amaran 100/200 when you adjust the power output via the app does it adjust in steps or is it a smooth anolog change?

The biggest benefit to the Amaran lights is the Sidus Link mobile app control. If you ever think you'll need it, that's a huge plus. It is also negligibly more color accurate, although probably not enough to make a difference. Or if you ever plan to buy an Aputure MC, or B7c, or ANY other light that supports Sidus Link, get the Amaran.
I do like how the SL series has the AC adapter built into the head, so it's just the light + 1 cord, but that is a non-issue to many people, especially if your light is in a studio and never moves.
The Godox prices also fluctuate a bit, so if they are on a super sale, that makes them more enticing. Hope that helps :)

Been using SL60W and I love the compactness and simplcity, while the SL150 II U-shaped stand is superior vs the Amaran 200D
I agree that the U-shaped yoke is better, and for studio lights, I prefer a slightly larger/heavier head that integrates the AC adapter, that way it uses just 1 simple cord to plug in.

The SL II series has the AC adapter built into the head, which I like because it's very simple with just the light and 1 standard cable. The 200d requires the external power brick. The SL150W II also has a better build quality, and is quieter. It even has a "fan off" mode to be completely silent at 35% brightness or less. It comes with a remote as well.
On the other hand, the 200d has Sidus Link mobile app control and is marginally more color accurate.
Both are great, so just choose whichever one has the more important differences to you and you'll be happy :)
Would you say the 200d or the sl150ii? In home studio with a soft box. Heard the amaran reflectors cause a hot spot
The stock reflector that comes with the Amaran lights does have more of a hot spot than some lights, but in a home studio 99% of people will be using a softbox of some sort, so it doesn't matter.
The 200d is slightly brighter, while the SL II series is quieter (and fan off mode), has the AC adapter built into the head unit so it's just the light + 1 cord, and has special FX, so it just depends on the price at any given moment I think.

Great videos! If you had to get one light would you choose the VL150 or the 200D? It will be used to light yoga online videos/live Stream w the light about 2m from the subject, facing away from her and bouncing off a wall which is a further meter away, the wall being about 3m from the yoga teacher. Should be very soft and daylight like. Plus the room isn't so big, w the mic quite close to the light. Filmed mostly on the phone only. Thank you in advance!
For your scenario I'd probably go VL150 because it's quieter and has v-mount battery support, which may be useful if you film in different locations. It also comes with a travel case. The 200d is about 1/3 stop brighter, which is not much, but something to consider I guess.

As a stills photographer I'm looking for a set of 3-4 continuous lights for indoor use (I'll use my Elinchrom strobes for outdoor as they are more powerful for overcoming ambient). My requirements are - portability (battery and mains), preferably bi-colour but don't mind using gels as long as there is a holder for them (hate having to use clips and tape to attach gels to lights) and a system that has a good set of modifiers - barn doors, snoots soft boxes etc . I would prefer to use with my existing Elinchrom modifiers but don't mind using an adapter or buying into a system that has its own good set of modifiers and attachments .... would appreciate your recommendations. As great as the Amaran lights are, I wouldn't normally recommend them for portable use becauase you have to buy the 2-bay battery station in order to use them with v-mount batteries, which is another piece to carry, and another cost. I think they are better suited to a studio space.
The Aputure 300d II and 300x (bi-color) are kind of the "standard" that all lights try to reach. I have the 300x and love everything about it.

The Light Dome II parabolic softbox (geni.us/aputure2lightdome) has a built in gel holder, but if you want bi-color without a softbox, definitely get the X. You lose slightly more brightness with gels than with a bi-color light, and I hate having to deal with gels.
Obvioulsy those cost a good amount. The other quality, 300 watt, v-mount capable LED would be the Godox VL300: geni.us/godoxvl300
They don't come in a bi-color version, so you'd need to use gels.
Almost all continuous LED lights are Bowens mount, so you'd need new softboxes or Elinchrom to Bowens adapters. I have one, and it's honestly a hassle, so I have separate modifiers for video lights.
There are a bajillion Bowens mount modifiers out there. Godox makes good ones, Neewer has some good budget options, and Glow and Laofas make my favorite collapsible beauty dishes. If you use diffusion, I recommend these over parabolics because you get the same light quality, but in a smaller package.

The ML60 is 2 stops dimmer, has negligibly lower color accuracy, and is not a native Bowens mount.
But, the ML60 is smaller, quieter, comes with a case, can be powered with cheap batteries (NP-F), and has the carrying handle. I'd say the ML60 has a better build quality too, but not by a lot.
All said, it just depends on which of those things is most important to you. Hope that helps!
@@NewLayer thanks! I own two of the Godox lights, recently got them after selling my SL60. But they do lack a little brightness sometimes, which is mainly what I was wondering. I heard other channels talk about the fan noise of the Amaran as well. I have a tiny studio so that might be a problem.
@@PatrickRambles If you got one like mine I think you'd be fine. I've used louder lights and didn't have issues. My office studio is about 10 x 10, but wood floors with a sub floor, so it's about as loud as it can get.
Which light is better and is brighter? Which would you get for video creation (interviews, maybe replicating sunlight through a window etc), The Nanlite FS 150 or the Amaran 100d? They both are about the same price on Amazon.
The FS-150 is slightly brighter, quieter, and better buiilt. The 100d is smaller and has the option of battery power IF you buy the Aputure 2-bay battery station. That adds a lot to the cost, but is there if you need it.
I personally like the FS-150 because it's nothing but the head and a standard power cord. The Amaran light requires an external AC adapter + cable.

I highly recommend collapsible beauty dishes because they are lightweight and have a smaller footprint. The 34" is a safe size, but the 25" will gift nice soft light too. The softbox I use in my talking head videos is 24" x 24".

@@gianmarcomartini4703 I haven’t tried the Nanlite at all, but it appears to be a slightly higher end light. It’s basically the Forza 200 without some of the portability features since it’s meant for studio use. The Forza 200 is 1/3 stop brighter than the 200d if that helps at all 🤷♂️

Just came from Caleb Pike's review and he said fan was an issue on 200D. Would it be too loud if using as a key? Maybe he got a defective unit? Thoughts?

I saw that too, which is why I always include the audio so you can compare yourself. Almost everyone agrees that the SL II and VL series of Godox lights are among the quietest, and my 200d is at that same level. Like others mention, individual units vary, so I can only speak about mine, but if some say one thing and others say another, then that might also point to a quality control issue. I think what's more likely though is that the bar has been raised when it comes to fan noise, so anything that's not super quiet just seems loud now, LOL.
Interesting that your fan noise thoughts differ substantially from Caleb and Gerald. Might be the pre-production models...?
Perhaps, mine is definitely retail, so not sure, but the audio samples speak for themselves. A lot of people have mentioned this though 🤷♂️
I had one of these on the loan from aputure since Christmas… No issues with the fan on that one either. I hope the two that I pre-ordered don’t have issues.

I’m very curious about how it compared the 300d mk ii in out put. Another reviewer earlier said that a 200d was brighter than a 300d Mark ii 🤓
I would trust that statement, but I don't have a 300d II to test it against. The 300d II isn't as bright as other 300 watt lights like the Godox VL300, so they are probably very, very close in brightness, maybe 1/3-2/3 stop.
The 300d II uses more power but is less bright for a variety of reasons (LED longevity, more stable color accuracy, etc) so it still has benefits, but it all depends on your needs.

Would you recommend the Amaran 100d, Godox VL150 or Weeylite Ninja 400?
They are all good lights, so it depends on what's most important to you.
The Ninja 400 and 100d are about the same brightness, but the Ninja 400 is bi-color while the 100d is daylight only. The VL150 is about 2/3 stops brighter than the other lights.
The VL150 and Ninja 400 have v-mount support while the 100d does not. The build of the VL150 and Ninja 400 is higher, and they both have quieter fans.
The 100d is significantly less expensive, and has the best color accuracy. The VL150 is close behind in color accuracy, and the Ninja 400 is slightly worse, but still plenty usable.

If you are working in a controlled environment and don't have to deal with ambient light, then yes, as long as you're able to get within 3-6 feet of the subject. If you have to battle with any ambient light, I'd get the 100d/200x at least. Hope that helps :)

@@hellolau Maybe, but I used an original Godox SL150W with a Deity V-Mic D3 Pro for a long time and no one every mentioned the fan noise. If it bugs you and you have Adobe Audition, you can record some silence, use it as a noise print, and remove 99% of the fan noise in less than 1 minute as well!
Brilliant video man. I am trying to decide on what light to get to start with and i have like 3 options sl60 for a 100€ or sl150wii for 235 € or one one godox new lights which would be around 300€ but i find the last one bit much tbh. what would you recommend ?

is the amaran 200d tint green or magenta? You have tint 0.2g here and on your site you have 0.2m, which is correct pls?
It has a slight magenta tint. I show here it has a “color correction number” of 0.2G, which means it needs a slight green gel to bring it back to neutral.
On the site I have the actual tint listed. I know it might be confusing but most people don’t know that CC# shows the opposite of what the tint actually is, so I listed it in my site as the actual tint.

It just depends how important silence is for you! I sold my UL150s because the Godox SL II and VL are plenty quiet for me, and my 200d is right at that same level. If you do delicate work and just don't want to worry about fan noise at all, nothing beats the UL150. I think the biggest downside to the UL150 is that it's fatter and heavier compared to other 150/200 watt lights.

@@TimandLauren Happy to help, the benefits of the VL are 1. it comes with a case and 2. it can be powered by v-mount batteries. With that said, it just depends if that's important to you or not, because from a brightness/color accuracy standpoint, they are only 1/3 stop apart.
Have you compared it to Degibee by PaulcBuff. It will run as LED only. 400 watt output
It's actually not 400W, but a "400W equivalent", meaning it's as bright as a 400 watt incandescent light. The LED modeling lamp itself is 75 watts, so it could be anywhere from half as bright as a Godox SL60W, to slightly brighter, just depending on how efficient it is. Since it's meant as a modeling lamp, I would question the color accuracy as well since no color accuracy measurements are listed.
I'd test one if I had it, but doubt I'll be able to pick one up any time soon. Hope that helps!
Any thoughts on the 100d compared to the Sokani x60?
The 100d will be more color accurate and will have mobile app control while the x60 uses a barrel connector so can be used with a dual NP-F plate or v-mount batteries with a d-tap to barrel cable. The 100d will also be about 1/3 stop brighter.
The X60 V2 (also sold as the Sutefoto P80) has a rosette style locking knob while the Amaran lights use a "handbrake" style, but both work well.
The Sokani/Sutefoto also includes a carrying case, so it just depends on how important that is to you!
I wonder how well the 200D will work with the fresnel attachment?
The COB may not be completely optimally placed compared to other lights, meaning that it might sit farther forward or background in the attachment, but it definitely should still work just fine. I don't have one to test, but apart from a slight difference, I wouldn't expect anything else.

I just got a Godox VL200 for $399. Do you think it worth the money over this new aputure 200d?
The main benefits of the VL200 are that it comes with a case, can use regular v-mount batteries, and is quieter. They are functionally very similar in brightness/color accuracy, so it just depends if the other things are worth the price difference for you. If you plan to use batteries, I'm assuming that the Aputure power station is going to be expensive, and I prefer v-mounts.
How well will these lights work with the Aputure fresnel lens attachment?
I haven't personally tested them, because I don't have the Aputure Fresnel, and although I'm not certain the COB on these lights sticks out the "ideal" distance into the Fresnel lens, they'll definitely work.
@@NewLayer Thanks. The reason I asked is that I have read online that even though the attachment will mount, it doesn't work well with some bowens mount lights from other brands. Apparently this has something to due with design differences.
@@KMLR2012 Yeah, it's really just about how far the COB sticks out into the Fresnel. There's a sweet spot, and anything further back or forward won't be as efficient, even though it'll still work.

The color accuracy of the Amaran lights is a bit higher than the Godox lights, yes. More accurate and with a more neutral green/magenta tint. I hope that helps :)

Yeah I saw that. The f you listen to the audio samples in my video you’ll hear mine is nearly identical to the Godox SL II and VL lights, which are widely considered very quiet. Could be their individual units I guess, but they each got 2 so I couldn’t tell you LOL

If you’re just shooting talking head videos indoors, the 100d should be enough. If you need the extra brightness, the you’ll have to decide if the 200d is worth the extra cost.
The SL II series has a better build quality, quieter fan, and has the AC brick integrated into the head, so it’s very simple.
The SL150/200W II are similar in brightness to the 200d, so it just depends on how good a deal you find.
No matter what, you can create great content with any of those 👍

@@fjsjdm3132 The SL200W II is about 1/2 stop brighter, so you just have to decide whether 1/2 stop is worth the extra ~$90 for you. Everything else is the same as the SL150W II.
If you plan to shoot outdoors a lot, the extra brightness will probably come in handy.

In my experience, Aputure and Nanlite are top notch! Godox business model puts all customer service on the retailer, so they have no customer facing direct support. Granted, their products are so simple you shouldn’t need help, and usually return/warranty issues are handled through a retailed anyways, but...

I'd skip the FS-200 specifically because I don't think it's worth the price over the FS-150 because it's only 1/3 stop brighter. The FS-300 is 1 stop brighter than the FS-150, so I'd consider those two instead.

The fan on the FS-300 is loud, while the FS-150 is on par with the Godox SL II and Amaran lights. Some people seemed to have louder versions of the Amaran lights, but mine were fine, and they've since updated the firmware to help make them even quieter when possible.
Here's what I like about each light...
FS Series - Better build quality, better yoke, integrated AC adapter into the head unit (so no separate AC brick), special effects don't require app to use, cheaper for how bright they are
Amaran - Smaller, Sidus Link mobile app control

If you're someone that never leaves your home/studio environment (which I guess is most of us these days... thanks Covid!) then these are a decent option. For me, the lack of a battery option together with a carry case is a dealbreaker. I like my investments to have flexibility and these are too limiting. Definitely not a Godox killer. I think Aputure made a mistake cutting corners like the carry case and some of the build quality issues Gerald referred to.
I think we share a lot of the same feelings. I wish it had a case, but they purposefully designed it to mostly be sitting in 1 place. At the same time, it's kind of odd to use a 48V power supply if it's not really geared for portable use since that will drastically increase the cost if you want to use battery power. Still a great light for the money, but it does have limitations some people won't like.

The Nanlite Forza 200 is a great value and can be powered by a single v-mount battery. The Godox VL300 is another option, and requires 2 v-mount batteries for power.
I have the Aputure 300x, which is bi-color and an amazing light, but since it's bi-color, might not be quite bright enough for what you want. The Aputure 300d II is fantastic too, but more expensive than the other 2 I mentioned.

While searching for lights and talking to you, I noticed if I need a light with 2 V-mount batteries, the good ones with 190WH (which can also provide enough power for lights) are here in Germany €160 each.
160 x 2 = €310
It means if I buy a light FV150 =€360
+ 2 v-mount batteries (€320),
that equals almost €700. which is like wtf, for a 150 W light only.
Then I may better buy a light without battery supply and power it with a power-station like Tacklife P50, as you also recommended in your other video. Because that may be a bit to carry with you (which I don't mind), and even other devices could be powered/recharged with an external power station.
@@syedarmaghanhassan4652 Yep, v-mount batteries are very expensive. Although, a 150 watt light should only require 1 battery. It is only when you get to 200-300 watts or greater that you would need 2.
A power station is a good option because you can also use it to charge your phone and other stuff. Plus, if you're doing that, look into the Nanlite FS-150 also. It is very simple with just the light + 1 cord, but if you have a power station, it would work great and save a lot of money.
Godox Killer is a funny idea but I already noticed that Godox goes into the direction of becoming the new Aputure i.e. creating more premium lights (better yoke, built quality, new very expensive ML60 light etc.) so maybe this will backfire now.
They do both seem to be expanding into each other's territory, but I don't think anything will backfire, I just think it'll bring us better lights at better prices! :)

The Amaran lights will be more color accurate, and although the Ninja has good mobile app control, the Amaran lights have Sidus Link, which is a bit nicer for complex lighting setups.

Would I be wrong if I said Nanlite Forza 200 is better than this?
In many ways it is, but it's also $559, so significantly more expensive. Although, when you take into account that it comes with a really nice case, and supports v-mount batteries, the extra cost of a bag + power station evens them out quite a bit. I love my Forza 200 for sure. It's a professional light you can travel with, whereas the Amaran COBs are more meant to stay in a home studio and never really leave.

It will be 1/3 stop brighter than the FV150 (or SL150W II, VL150, or UL150).

@@shevyjohn9308 Yes, 1/3 stop is the smallest possible step you can make on your camera. So you would only have to change your camera settings by 1 "click", either shutter speed, aputure, or ISO to get proper exposure between the two lights.

Apart from that, the Jinbei uses cheap NP-F batteries, has worse build quality, and a slightly louder fan, but not by a lot. It also can only be controlled by the optional proprietary remote, which is hard to come by as well.
The Jinbei feels like a "super budget" light, while the Amaran COB lights feel somewhere between budget/midrange.
If they can fix the fan noise I’d buy the X version in a heartbeat.
Some people have mentioned how other reviewers talked about the fan being too loud, but my findings were a bit different. The Godox SL II and VL series are some of the quietest lights you can buy, and the Amaran 200d I have is essentially on that same level, albeit producing slightly different frequencies. So if you're just doing normal talking head shots, interviews, etc, I don't think it'll be a problem at all. If you need total silence or close to it, then the Godox UL150 is still the best choice since it's completely fanless.
@@NewLayer Okay, thanks. I have the 300X and that’s not a problem-it doesn’t need to be absolutely silent. I’m most concerned about the fan starting and ramping up/down and having no control. I keep the 300x permanently on as it inevitably kicks in. I think I need to try one out.

Depends on pricing in your area and what you prioritize. The Sidus Link mobile app is still better, although the new Nanlink app is good now. Before, Nanlite had no mobile app for a long time.
The Amaran lights have optional v-mount power with their battery box, and it's a little smaller and lighter. The Nanlite FS series uses a bunch of little individual LEDs instead of a traditional circular COB, so there's up and downsides to both, but luckily, both are awesome for the most part.
Only Aputure Fanboys said it was the "end of Godox" ;)

Every video I’ve watched has said the same things - really bright but plastic. Also annoying fan. It really makes me wonder if the plastic build quality is just bad or just not up to par for what we are used to with aputure. Maybe I’ll pick up a 100d to play with sooner or later.
They are definitely aimed more towards solo creators who just need a light in their studio that doesn't do much moving around. For that they are great.
They are plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap, still budget, but not flimsy. The fan on mine is basically on the same level as the Godox SL II/VL series, which are widely considered to be very quiet, so either there is variation between individual units, or our expectations keep getting higher for quiet fans! :)

If it's a year or so it's probably worth it due to their low cost and just rebuy them overtime they break.

your data is wrong. godox sl1200dii gives 74000 lux in 1 meter brightness.
That is manufacturer provided data, and includes the stock reflector. Those numbers can't be trusted and is why I have a complete database of lights to compare. Only bare bulb measurements can be fairly compared.
The miw range VL300 are GREAT! but there is NO REASON TO BUY godox 160, 60 etc
There's still benefits to the Godox lights over these.
The SL II has no AC brick, so is more streamlined with a better build quality and slightly quieter fan.
The VL series in general has the huge benefit of being able to use v-mount batteries, and come with carrying cases.
Overall, they all have their pros and cons, but it's great to have more choices now!
There is no 200x in your comparison website.
I only input lights I have tested first hand so it's a fair comparison. Unfortunately, I've never been able to test the 200x. If I ever get a hold of one I'll add it.

I guess that this extra brick kills the portability of this light for run&gun on batteries.
That's probably my biggest gripe with it, because although it has battery power, it requires a 48V input so you can't just slap a v-mount or even 2 on.
@@NewLayer I wonder by the way, what kind of key light would be best to be carried even already mounted on a light stand strapped to a backpack to save time, set up in few seconds with everything, photos or video for a minute or two, packed likewise instantly - and still not too costly as well: COB or panel? Of what size?

I have checked both lights and apart from being slightly dizzy after all the details, I think that ML60 would be better suited out of these two due to a better set of accessories for carrying around in the kit. One thing made me confused though - brightness was tested to be around 3000 lux; from what I remember, it's weirdly close to Yongnuo 360 II. This "light sword", as I have heard it called, doesn't allow using accessories - but in run&gun mode that doesn't matter that much as long as the light is smooth enough. How my confusion could be resolved?

Four times difference comes more in line of what I might have expected from overall description.
Edit2: lights with color options are unclear in the table - is their brightness measured in white or any color? What about the other option? Also weight with grip or mount included would be great, as it would allow MC or F7 to stand more despite their dimness.

You've made mistake in this material. Amaran 100d and 200d both have bulid in effects, 8 of them.
I updated the info in the pinned comment, although I would say they they are semi-built in since you can’t enable or control them without an external method. It’s definitely good to have the option though.
