    Dang, those oil ring gaps were definitely not staggered correctly, not to mention the one piston had the oil ring bunged up in the groove. As for upside-down rings, have seen it before, took an engine apart years ago for smoking and found the exact same problem. Turned rings around and reinstalled them, as they were otherwise undamaged......no more smoke.
    Good catch on that issue, a fresh set of pistons will be a big plus, along with attention to valve seats & seals too. I'd hit the bores with some 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper to ensure a perfect crosshatch with nikasil bores.
    Thanks for another cool installment in this video series, Joe!

    Usually smoke on startup and goes away as it warms or when decelerating is seals. Smoke like yours, smokes more as it gets warmer, is a sign the rings are not right. Can't wait to see what you find.

    This video series is a great lesson on how knowing and paying attention to details matters. Every part of the engine rebuild you have looked at so far has had issued, some minor, some major. At this point I would feel the need to go through the bottom end also, because you say the same guy also rebuilt it. Skipping this when you're already this far into things could come back to bit you down the road.

    There must have been a ton of blow by in the case!

    • @mwilliamshs
      @mwilliamshs Рік тому

      Uhm...it'd smoke out a breather or through the pcv if compression gasses were pressurizing the crankcase. Instead, the rings were upside down, so vacuum was pulling oil up the cylinders, and oil was being expelled through the exhaust. You're thinking of worn rings and/or cylinders allowing blowby. That's not the case here.

    • @njb7209
      @njb7209 Рік тому +1

      @mwilliamshs the rings were both upside down ( taper wrong ) and the gaps were also lined up. The Compression will blow into the case. 😎

    • @mwilliamshs
      @mwilliamshs Рік тому

      @njb7209 some compression always gets to the case. Inevitable. In this case, it wasn't any more prevalent than in any other. Research rings gaps. They move. You don't *want* them aligned but it happens periodically in every engine. They move.

  • @clivewilliams3661
    @clivewilliams3661 Рік тому +2

    The old skool rule of thumb for ring gaps is 3thou per inch of bore or for a race engine 5thou per inch of bore that makes the ring gap 10-15thou and the top ring can be wider than the second ring as it see more heat but having them the same makes life easy. The ring gaps shown here are IMO too slack. BTW you cannot hope to measure pistons and bores with the accuracy that is needed when using calipers.
    What is shown here is what was suspected i.e. an oil control ring problem on the last video.. The seller and the state of the machine gave clear signs to expect an amateurish, incompetent build, which has been shown to be correct..

    After spending all that money, now the Joe is gonna put new pistons so this was all for naught. Except the cylinders are good. Joe won't even use the pistons as he says the wear is wrong. When taking it apart he said the oil rings were stuck on one of the pistons which could have also produced all the smoke. Three of the rings were upside down and he says this pushed the oil up into the burning chamber. He did say it ran very well, but used a quart of oil in the hour he rode it. It really looked fast but the constant rattle from the clutch was distracting. He will have to take care of that also.

  • @darrynruzicka2883

    Don't put too much emphasis on the the ring orientation in terms of how the gaps are spaced rotationally because when a cylinder is right the rings will spin around on the piston once it's running. As for rings being installed right side up, or not, you are right. Get you self an appropriate hone for nikasil and just lick it for a new cross hatch or your rings won't seal properly. After all the work it's worth the few bucks.

    If I we're you if that really is supposed to be A 700 sportsman now. I'd be reprinting the Plastic decals in it to. Cause if the DNR runs it and the engine doesn't match up to the information on the side of it. Along with the information about the head swap on it that changed over to A 700 from A 600 sportsman engine now . That can cause some unnecessary.,or unneeded problems due not being properly relabeled& updated paperwork to state that the head was swapped out on it to.
