Thank you for another great reaction to Voice Play. Please do a reaction video to Voice Plays cover of Hell Fire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Also Voice Plays mash up of Queen songs titled Queen In 5 Minutes. It is a very theatrical mash up & their story telling is awesome. Also Geoff's solo cover to Shenandoah. He loves to clone himself 3 or 4 times to harmonize with himself. Please put these on your to do list.

I would recommend Hoist the colours from Voiceplay. You can see more theatrical side. We don't talk about Bruno (from movie Encanto) is more one the humorous side but very complex in structure.

I look forward to more of the "Big 3" (Pentatonix, Home Free & Voiceplay) but, if you want a one-off vocally awesome, emotionally-charged song, please react to Voctave's version of "Mary, did you know?" To try their theatrical and funny side, you may try either their version of "We don't talk about Bruno", from Disney animated movie "Encanto", or "In the hall of the Mountain King", which I believe you know well (it's from Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt", just in case...), which I'm very curious to hear your thoughts about, or maybe "The Dragonborn comes - Skyrim" for the theatre, or the Viking "pair" made of "My Mother told me" and "Valhalla calling". But to have together BOTH the theatrics and the fun, I'd say "Drunken Sailor". Hilarious. 😅
    See you next time| 🙂

I love how you chose this one because I definitely wasn’t expecting this to be your next reaction. I hadn’t seen anyone recommend it. I appreciate you pointing out the rhythmic changes and tension because it’s hard for me sometimes to pinpoint exactly what it is about VoicePlay that… keeps you on your toes which you also mentioned. I love your reaction to this one -- your facial expressions throughout, but especially in the end section where the one line repeats over and over, were just wonderful. Aside from the musical beauty of this arrangement, I love the facial expressions of the men -- I imagine their significant others are standing just off-camera and they're singing directly to them. Either that, or they've all fallen in love with the wall behind the camera, and while I think they're all pretty good actors, I prefer to think there were sweet people smiling back at them.

It's hard to pick songs to suggest, because there are so many options. Maybe Drunken Sailor for a more theatrical look at how unexpectedly complex they can make something traditionally simple? Also, I would encourage you to dip into Geoff Castellucci's solo channel (the bass) when you get the chance. A fantastic educational experience. You have an almost magical way of explaining things to people who don’t have the knowledge you do.
I tend to gravitate to certain groups and certain songs/arrangements. I believe the term that you use “scrunchie” refers to what has been described as dissonance. I think that’s what I really gravitate to. I love the unexpected tones. And now I will be listening more carefully to the tempos that they use. I’ll probably not catch a lot of it but I’ll be listening.😊
I don’t know if this is accurate because I have no musical training but I have heard that Geoff’s arrangements are more harmonically complex and Layne’s tend to be more rhythmically complex. I think that would sort of go along with Layne being a beat boxer.
But I have to guess by whether or not Geoff has been pushed to do something he’s not necessarily comfortable doing. If that’s the case or if he’s featured more then it’s a Layne arrangement. Layne and Geoff have known each other since middle school when they started singing together and he likes to push Geoff.
Eli has co arranged a number of pieces with Layne , and done two of his own. His most recent arrangement of Radiohead’s Creep is the first version that I’ve truly liked. I know it’s popular, but I always got angry stalker vibes from it. As an introvert, I prefer the reflective element in their cover.

Great analysis. If you want to hear a really fun VP song The Lion Sleeps Tonight is really different to the more serious ones so far. It has everything including whistle notes from Cessr. In the Hall of the Mountain King for fun and theatrics. Drunken Sailor for a really different take on a traditional song and a great arrangement- listen to the end after the screen goes black for that one especially.

    So...
A huge Disney catalog. Pick your favorite Disney musical and enjoy.
Broadway -- Their version of wicked is just that. Also If I were a Rich Man/Girl.
Sh-Boom -- Plain ol' 60s doo wop fun.
    Tennessee Whiskey is so smooth.
Video Games - Skyrim The Dragonborn Comes
You could do just Voiceplay and have more material than one YT channel could cover.

Again another brilliant reaction and analysis!! Indeed VoicePlay's arrangement tend to have a lot crunchy harmonies and interesting rhythm changes, and I really enjoy finding those intricacies in their songs. I'm glad that you can immediately pick up and appreciate those details. I also love your humor in this (Ah! the tension! 😂) Wonderful job!!

@@thisismetoday7423 I love Queen in 5 minutes! 🤩 There's so much going on, ya gotta watch it at least 5 times to catch it all.
And I love all the shenanigans in Boy Bands in 5 minutes. 😁 Another one I can watch over and over again. (Oh, who am I kidding, I can say that about most VoicePlay songs.)
But I got about half through the comments and saw no one mentioned Daddy Sang Bass. Not many people request that one for some reason. 🤷

@@maskedmallard537 Queen in 5 minutes is really cool in so many ways. Boy Bands in 5 minutes is just extra entertaining to me though. It’s the dancing I think. I was surprised both Geoff and Eli have some moves! 😅
I love Daddy Sang Bass because I love everything they do but it’s not one of my top favorites. Probably not in the top 25 for me if I were to rate them all lol I actually thought about that recently, would be so hard to rank or rate them because they don’t have a bad cover! 😀

Thank you for another great analysis of a great VoicePlay cover!
Interesting that the VoicePlay songs you've analyzed so far are both arranged by Geoff Castellucci. Geoff and Layne Stein split the majority of the arrangements between the two of them, and I used to try to figure out from the sounds who did the arrangements, but they fooled me so many times that I've just given up and take a look at the description box anymore!
Another song arranged by Geoff that I think is similar to this one (and again done without going "musical theater") is I Can't Make You Love Me, the melancholy hit by Bonnie Raitt. It has yet another lineup, with Cesar back in (he's the one who wanted to do the song), and a guest artist E. J. Cardona, who sings tenor for the a cappella group Voctave.
The member you didn't know is Earl Elkins, Jr. as you found out. He was one of the founding members, but left the group in 2020 for undisclosed personal reasons. His high tenor is something I've always compared to a laser beam - if he focuses it on you, you're going to know you've been hit!

Your analysis was really informative. I was so glad to see it pop up. This song tends to get overlooked because reactors do assume it will just be a simple arrangement. Even when VoicePlay do simple, it's never boring. It's right there in the name. They like to play, in many different ways. And don't worry, you will get plenty of Layne's inventive percussion if you keep delving into their catalog. (Though we also enjoy his lovely singing voice, so don't let a potential lack of beatboxing be a deterrent if you want to check out more ballads.)

Great reaction, I always learn so much. Thank you! Both of these were arranged by Geoff. I'd love to hear you react to one of Layne's arrangements, and a fun one is Hall of the Mountain King. (yes, by Grieg.) Historically, they split arrangements roughly 50/50. Moving forward, Eli will be picking up a share. (But he does have a brand new baby at home, so I don't know when this new plan will kick in.)

I've been listening to Voice Play and Home Free both for 10 years, since they each performed on The Sing-Off. I'll let you know when I find a bad arrangement by either group.
As for Earl, we'll, we miss him. He was a founding member who stepped away shortly after this video due to personal reasons. Cesar took that opening, and then J None left just after that because the US Navy wanted him in their Choir. He does still stop by to sing with the guys whenever he has a chance.

For me VoicePlay's arrangements are just stunning. Earl had/has a very high tenor voice though his lower voice is, for me, more enjoyable. Less piercing. Geoff refers to Earl's high voice as "Earl's World", a world he never enters. Of course, he can go quite high, but not that high. :) Another one in this vein is True Colours, but for a different feel, ELO's Mr Blue Sky is one I really like. But there are so many it's hard to choose.
