    Perry Como and Dean Martin were two of the greatest entertainers that ever lived. Both so relaxed, they played off each other perfectly. It is truly a shame that we don't see entertainment of this caliber anymore. And what we saw of Lena Horne in this clip shows another top caliber singer/entertainer. What I like about them is how they respected their audiences and themselves in the way they dressed. No ripped-at-the-knees dungarees here or tee-shirts. I, personally, can't see how anyone who watches MR> Martin and Mr. Como could not possibly be entertained. Maybe if one doesn't remember this type of entertainment, maybe if one was never exposed to it, but now there's youtube and one came become edified. We'll never see the likes of these people again, as someone wrote, and that is truly a shame. But then, they were out there to entertain and not make fashion, or any other type, statements. As far as being advertised by cigarette companies, well, what show then wasn't? Let's not put 21st Century morality in the way of viewing great entertainment. The problem today is there is no "show" in show business. No one knows true entertainment any more. I remember watching Perry Como on Wednesday evenings as a boy in the 50s and Dean Martin on Thursdays in the 60s. They were the type of acts I patterned myself after, along with their other contemporaries. To me, they'll always be the best the entertainment business had to offer and I'm glad I remember them in their prime and love seeing them in the clips youtube has to offer.

      John Primerano Can you even imagine Dean in ripped jeans and a scruffy t-shirt? I have seen pictures of him in casual clothes, either dressed for golf or in slacks and a polo shirt relaxing with Jeannie and the kids, and he always looked the epitome of cool and classy. What today would be called ‘smart casual’

    These great clips should all be "dated"' for historical accuracy. Priceless clips and the greatest entertainers we will ever know in this century.

    • @lindashelley3635
      @lindashelley3635 6 років тому +2

      bewiseasowls It would be interesting for us fans as well, to know which year a particular show was recorded. Sometimes you can pick up clues from the conversation, like here, with the references to the Beatles, it was obviously in the mid-60s. But that's not always possible to identify the particular time, and a 'date stamp' would be useful.

    • @toniwilson1579
      @toniwilson1579 6 років тому +5

      I think I figured out a date for this by googling Dean Martin on Perry Como by looking through the video posted there was one with Horn, Martin and Como. It was 17 min long, Lena was dress in the same clothes she had on here. It was the beginning of the show, they mentioned was the day before Valentine Day. The year on this was 1964.... So according to the one I found date filmed at least would be February 13, 1964
      They did the beginning of the show, then jumped to the very end of the show, caught Dean coming on at the end and talking about Perry next show which gave me proof it probably was the same show .

    Wonderful! No need for flashing lights, rockets or scantilly clad dancers surrounding the performers. Just pure class, its only a pity that there are not more clips available of them working together. Only found 3 on youtube. Great to see them and hear them, Perry taking off Deans drunk act is hilarious.

    • @LaPenserosa1
      @LaPenserosa1 7 років тому

      I cant figure if you're throwing shade at Miley Cyrus and the like for their pyrotechnics and lack of clothing OR if you're a Perry fan sore that Dino got his own show with lights, rockets, and lots of dancers wearing very little. So is it Gaga and her light show or Dean and his Dingalings that's got you down? LOL! Either way your comment is very amusing.

    • @lindashelley3635
      @lindashelley3635 5 років тому +1

      La Penserosa Though Dean DID have the Ding-a-Lings, I don’t recall any fancy flashing lights or fireworks on his show, nor on Perry’s, Andy Williams or any of the other variety shows of the time. These REAL entertainers didn’t need any such fancy distractions because they could actually sing, with proper live orchestras, instead of miming to computerised backing tracks. What they also had was Class, from the way they dressed and presented themselves to the stylish studio sets. And the female singers were just as talented, and also always dressed elegantly and stylishly instead of looking like cheap tramps just dragged in from the gutter. And for those who disagree, I suggest you compare any performance from the likes of, say, Peggy Lee or Ella Fitzgerald with any of today’s so-called ‘superstars’ - it’s like the difference between the Hope diamond and cubic zirconia.

    I loved how at the end of the show Perry took Lena's hand and wouldn't let go. This was 1964, so the end of the show would have been cut in the South. It has a 50s feel to it, except for the Beatles reference.

    • @josephcalderon906
      @josephcalderon906 6 років тому +1

      +Lynn Lobliner Dean had an affinity for this woman,when he got his very own show,the following year.he brought her on frequently as his guest.but,can you blame the man?.he and perry had pretty damn well taste in female singers particularly of color.

    • @toniwilson1579

      Loved how Dean show his friendship with Perry. He kept his hand on Perry shoulder throughout there song together. He did that when Harry Mills was his show, cause he meant so much to him. It was explained that Dean imitate Harry Mills from when he saw the Mills brothers in steubenville,Ohio when he was young. So Dean having his hand on Perry shoulder was a way of showing his feeling for a other entertainer he thought the world of.

      Ray Opezzo I think the way they may have looked at it was a way of gaining new fans. I mean, you may not be familiar with the work of, say, Tony Bennet but would tune in to watch Andy Williams and in the process also become a fan of Tony (and vice-versa of course). I know this can happen because since finding all the old Dean Martin shows on You tube, I have also discovered such wonderful American comedians as Jonathan Winters and Foster Brooks etc who, as a Brit, I had never even heard of before.

    On a different clip someone asked why other Italian-American singers with beautiful voices such as Vic Damone and Jerry Vale (and there were others) didn't become huge stars like Perry and Dean. Part of the reason can be gleaned from this clip. Disarming stage presence and personality have a lot to do with it.
