  • People often pass dozens of churches on their regular drives around town, yet struggle for months (even years) to find a Bible-teaching church.
In this video, Dr. Steven J. Lawson addresses with Costi Hinn why preachers today don't preach the Word of God.

We moved to a small town and I remember asking God "why are we here?", and then we found our church. Our Pastor teaches and preaches the Bible and I'm beyond thankful that God led us to this Bible believing church, especially when they are so few and far between. There are churches everywhere and on every corner, but to have a Pastor that does expository preaching is truly a blessing.

Am I correct in saying that there are different theology schools teaching different doctrines? I heard a charasmatic pastor say they opted to do their train in a private college that didnt teach the traditional theology degree. Isnt that where the divide begins and where strange interpretations come from. How are these learning institutions recognised?

At one of the churches at which I was on staff, the popular pastor who drew large crowds would only spend about one hour preparing his messages. Thanks for sharing this story.
Expository preaching is the way. We need to glorify God by teaching his whole counsel. And we do that by actually going through the entire Bible.
Must people don't get that; both laymen and pastors. They would rather tell a story and sprinkle "proof texts" (verses) over it to validate their sermon. The modern day sermon is wrong; wrong teaching. Pastors say this: "The Lord laid on my heart... " And they proceed to tell us a personal story, which is their sermon.
When is the Lord going to lay on your heart a book of the Bible, rather than your personal story?

So encouraging to hear this. I think the definition of 'Biblical preaching' has been watered down. A preacher can have a topic they want to talk about and because they included a couple proof texts in their sermon people will marvel and say 'What a Biblical preacher'.
Instead, a true Biblical preacher will actually preach the entire book, and let God's word teach and address various topics as it will.
I like to call it the difference between teaching 'from' the Bible and actually just teaching 'the' Bible.

Living in the Bible Belt and being a member of a "country church" my whole life and now having pastored 2 I can tell you that the problem down here is more about churches wanting guys that brag about their own ignorance in the guise of "humility". Most of my life I've heard people criticize guys that are well read within our circles. I literally had a woman tell me that she would get up and leave if she knew I was going to preach because she knew I was going to get into things she "didn't understand". It's unreal. The irony is the things I was going to explain were things that her pastor had personally ASKED ME TO EXPLAIN to his congregation because he felt it was a little above his paygrade. LOL! The reason smaller churches have guys that are just not that Biblically deep is the fact that most of those churches are "ran" by families with a historical connection to the church and men with deeper knowledge are a huge threat to those who think they're "in charge". I can promise you this happens very frequently where I'm at. Sadly. I'd love to hear the experiences of others in smaller Baptist churches in the south but I guarantee you it's very similar to all I've just said.

I’m young, wear a suit, have a pretty wife with obedient children, went to a SBC seminary, and absolutely hate church growth schemes. I believe the Word is sufficient. The majority of the church liked me a lot, but the three families who literally run the church did not like the fact that I had a MacArthur commentary and am reformed. Just sad, but the church was dying. Mostly older people who wanted Billy Graham style ministry. But, thanks to God’s Grace alone, I am at a church that is growing and our doctrine/theology class I teach on Tuesday packs the gym for three hours on Tuesday nights! I am very blessed to be where I am at, and I do not ever want to forget that if weren’t for the grace of God I’d be in a dead church playing traditional church service for the spiritually dead who said the sinners prayer at 10yrs old.

Such wisdom just off the cuff on the spur of the moment! This is so true. "The fear of man will prove to be a snare." Richard Baxter's "The Fear of Man Pleasing" really put me in my place as a pastor. It's a short fiery read helps to insulate the pastor of fearing man and instead "fearing him who can throw both your body and soul into Hell" (Matthew 10). Who cares what the world, or even your flock think if you are truly submitting to Christ the King? Wesley was thrown out of churches for telling the truth. Thomas Boston's flock hated him for 8 years before God brought revival!
The lack of fear of God is the number one determining factor in why pastors are weak and timid, and why churches hide from truth. I believe the lack of fear of God is the reason the church in the West is so ineffective. How can the fire of God come down if his ambassadors are afraid of the people more than him?

How can you be a pastor? You couldn't get Mathew 10:28 right. It's as if hell is a place where the unforgiven live in torment for eternity, instead of the truth. Hell, is the GRAVE, the pit, the abode of the DEAD. 10:28... DESTROY, not remain living. Never mind. Your Sunday keeping convicts you as it is. Sue your seminary for malpractice, you will win.

I'm not trying to be a jerk about this. I'm a pastor and have been preaching and teaching for over 15 years. I agree we need the Spirit's anointing to preach and teach effectively. But the statement to me sounds like religious jargon that doesn't have an objective meaning. We do have a Scriptural reference for studying the Word to show ourselves approved. That can be taught and explained to all believers and is Scriptural. The above statement sounds pious and most of the church would just "Amen" without even thinking about what it means because it sounds spiritual. But can you teach us how to become fully saturated and fully immersed in the Spirit? If so, I would like to learn to make sure I am before the next time I preach...

First of all, a preacher must be born-again. A preacher must be called by God to be a preacher. A preacher that is God called must get alone with God daily and seek His Face and Praise Him and Worship Him and ask Jesus to come and give him the words to say. A man of God that is annointed by God will preach what the HolySpirit leads him to say. A man of God does not preach ichy ears. A true man of God will want the HolySpirit to have his way. A preacher should be led by the HolySpirit not by education, man's thinking, man's ways. A man must let the HolySpirit have His way! We all need Jesus! It is Jesus that breathes life and speaks life into our souls. It is only Jesus that can make His Word alive to us. There is scripture that says 11 Timothy 3:5 Having a form of godliness but denying the power there of: from such turn away. Jesus can do anything. We serve a Mighty God! A lot of preachers and people have a religion they do not have a personal relationship with Jesus. The answer for all us is to Get alone with God and seek His Face, Praise Him, Worship Him, give Him Glory due unto His Name! Keep asking Him to come and speak to us and keep Reading His Word. Keep calling upon Jesus to come and fill us up with His precious living water. We must keep talking to Jesus, keep calling upon Him until He comes. Jesus can come and restore our souls. Jesus can soften our hearts that can get hardened. Jesus can breathe hope back into our souls. He can heal the broken hearted. He can lift the heavy burdens. When we become thirsty, he can come and fill us up with His precious living water. When we get hungry, he can feed us with the bread of life, His Holy Word, until we are filled. JESUS IS WORTHY TO BE PRAISED! ALL GLORY GOES TO HIM! Let us be looking for Jesus to come and speak to us each day!

Where I live, I see two things:
    1. Pulpits wanting to relate with the congregation instead of God.
    2. Congregations bored with God.
Pulpits are so afraid of preaching meat and offending the babes in their churches. I even dislike the term "life groups". They spend more time discussing how they felt about the sermon than digging in the Word.
Worship bands perform more than worship, many come to church not expecting much and they leave the same way they came. The congregation acts like nothing changed because they have no reverence for God. Simply, they don't know God and all they want is assurance they are not going to hell.
    Tozer said it...
The gospel is so watered down that if it was poison, it would not kill anyone and if it were medicine, it would not cure anyone.
American churches, in general but not all, are Laodicean to the core. They have no idea Jesus is knocking on the door.

      Mt. 24:14
      Mk. 1:14-15
As long as Christianity preaches salvation as the gospel, Christ will NOT return. It's maddening. The gospel is in the 2nd verse of the frigging Lord's prayer, and Christianity can't get it right.
You either, in the face of scripture. Why can't Christianity read for itself what the gospel is? I HAS to be the influence of Satan, long before our generations, to declare a false gospel, which is ANOTHER gospel, being called the gospel.
Or maybe Christianity is not able to read?

If men appointed in position are nowhere near having the experience of Timothy, who was exhorted by Paul on how to orchestrate and govern the church of God, how can a church be set into place through discipleship without having to draw the pastor out of what he is truly intended to do, and without draining him- that he has no time to get into the word himself?

Much of what was said has some truth to it. The preaching of the Word is forced to compete with a Society raised on entertainment styled by television. And music caters not to worship but a culture raised on emotion and drum beats. But the Eldership must also share the blame because they have not engaged in their proper duties such as visitation and church business. There is also an emphasis on bigger is better so we need dynamic Pastors who image Tony Robbins and not Peter, Paul, or John the Baptist. And yes, we need fewer counselors in the pulpit and more men of God called to be Preachers! Yet let us be fair, it is difficult to be the master of all things when the Body of Christ isn’t helping to shoulder the load. How can one Preacher do two services on Sunday, a Bible teaching on Wednesday, and oversee all the other church business. Truly, you get the Pastor you have helped to create. What you eventually windup with is a burnt out Pastor preaching recycled sermons that do not meet the real needs of the Body or himself.

Dr. Lawson often repeats the statement that all things are determined by God, agreeing with the late RC Sproul, that every molecule moves by the decree of God and that there are no maverick molecules in the universe. God is sovereign and determines everything. The most consistent, accurate answer to the question, according to Dr. Lawson's theology, is quite straightforward: Men don't preach the Bible because God has determined that they don't. Meticulous sovereignty allows for no other conclusion.

People have lost a sense of what church IS! It's not a social club. It's a place for believers to gather to focus on Christ, and to be built-up in their faith, to mature in the things of God. A pastor is supposed to help them comprehend their faith, to know who they ARE in Christ, to learn what the word of God means and how to put it into practice in their lives. To love and to forgive each other. A pastor has to warn, as well! It can't be all "positive". (although to warn and admonish IS loving!). The pastor is not a CEO and few spend any time in prayer.

Sorry Steve but the analogy of the concert for 4 hours vs an hour of preaching doesn't gel with me.
A one hour church service with 20 minutes of quality teaching is better than a two hour service with 80 minutes of preaching as only a portion will be retained.

He elaborated very topically, and used scripture as a backbone to the topics and real world issues he spoke about. Preaching and Teaching are different gifts according to the Bible. We need more Bible teachers, but we also need existential preachers like Paul.

I don't know a single biblical preacher. The fact that the concept of church is lost to all of them is astounding
