This link doesn't work. Please post updated link. Thank you for your videos! They've helped me a lot, as this is the first time I'm doing this kind of work.
I was taught about the concave side on almost all mud knives 25 years ago. What I didn’t know was that I could use the non-concave side for feathering. I’ve been using the concave side only all this time for my DIY jobs. Sure appreciate your video as I’m starting to tape/mud my new 1,800sq/ft shop. 😃👍🏼💪🏼
Can I ask you why you and others use such a wide blade when joints and tape are no where near that size? I noticed that father has a 8" Marshalltown, but after reading I've heard 10" is a popular size due to it being easier to handle than a 12" blade.
Right on Scully's House! Man I hope your doing well, am I missing your streams? I don;t think I have got a notification in a while. Your a solid dude brother! 👊🔥💨💨💨
I did notice the concave side, Did my first mud job last week. I did not do the tape though, it was a new constuction house and they taped it. But not a second coat, and did not go over the tape. I jist wanted it covered. The butts were a PITA so left them. Tape job sucked as they likely figured it was a garage and would never be painted. I jist diddnt want my paint to mess with the exposed tape... Just a nitpick, if there is a concave side to the knife (there is) then there is no flat side. That would be a convex side ;) Thanks for the tips
Haha Charles...😂 You’re absolutely right. It was just a way of explaining the concave side to the other (flat) side.😇 it really isn’t flat. Although when pressure is applied there is more of a flat surface then not.👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend! -Paul
@@PaulPeck I used the same side for applying and pulling it tight though. I will use both sides like you did from now on. Do you prefer the pan over a hawk?
I asked my husband if he knew about the concave side, and he didn't. I don't mind helping with painting projects around here, so I watch your channel all the time for your tips. (PS Are you so used to the work that you aren't aching at night ?? We sure are !!). Thanks, Paul
Honestly the only video I've found for this exactly. sparky by trade, decided to take the time and get into carpentry which just like electrical has many aspects, ive taped before but starting tommorow its going to be more serious (for me) than juts patching holes i make to run pipe lol thank you!
I saw in the ither video you mentioned people sealing the drywall before mudding. I have never done that except for once when I applied popcorn. That being said and with possible problems being moisture from the pool, would have been a good idea to seal this ceiling? If not, what is to prevent the same thing happening again?
Man,I can always tell a real pro cuz you guys make that look so so so damn easy. Thanks for your channel boss. I need all three help I can get when it comes to mudding so I don't have to sand much... Or none at all preferably... Maybe someday...
I am just trying to do a few joints in my house. I bought a 12” knife. When I stand the knife up on its edge on a flat surface the middle is not touching. Is it supposed to be like that? It’s not exactly what you are talking about here. I just feel like this would cause the edges to dig in really bad.
I love your videos which have been very helpful. Thank you. Do the same rules apply if you are doing a skim coat over sheetrock on a ceiling repair? Thanks again.
Depends on the patch. If the whole patch needs mud your gunna use the non concave side applying pressure on one side and working all the way out so you don't have a line
Just watched your video, i’m in Scotland, i just think its a bit quicker with two trowelled on coats with 11 & 14 inch trowels no edges n a light sand to finish, each to their own, but your blades are good, what make are they?
Wow! That's great info! I always use the flat side but this makes so much more sense! I've used A curved trowel occasionally and this looks like the same concept.. smh that i didn't get it till now! Definitely gonna use it that way next time!! thanks Paul!!😊
It's a feeling and nothing else. Not to take away from ANY of this. I'm a baby in this world of contractordom. You feel the concave and it does flow but your hands will flow as well. The blade; even against corners and corner beads will flow as long as this process you're showing us is followed and your keep your hands with the curve
I think I might apply too much pressure in the concave side, if my knives have one. Seems like the knives being do flexible, it is easy to apply too much pressure.
So you don't sand before texturing? I have been but I'd love to skip that. Most of my jobs are knock down. Thank you so much for posting these. It makes me a better asset.
Hey Chad!💥👊🏻 I don’t sand because all my edges are pulled super tight. I will go around with my 6” taping knife and scrape any ridges or hi spots. I also carry a pencil around and mark any areas I see that needs mud. The I’ll go around one more time and hit those areas super tight again.👍🏻 Thank you so much for watching and commenting!😎 -Paul
I heard about concave/convex blades and looked at mine, but they look the same, completely flat. Maybe it’s my eyes, or the brand I use (Quinn, from Harbor Freight.)
I didn’t know that ‘awesome to know “please keep me posted I do some drywall and always want to get better. Are all knives con caved? Or what is the best brand to buy?
I’m a finisher and I’m ngl, I’ve never seen anyone use green lid all purpose for coating. That’s normally just a taping mud. It’s also a lot harder to sand because of the glue that’s in that mud. I tape with the all the all purpose and coat with the plus 3. IMO the plus 3 is a lot smoother and twice as easy to sand
The funny thing is that I have the same exact knife but the sticker is on the other side or the conclave side. So if your watching this video and asking yourself why it’s not working the same then check what side your sticker is on.
well darn. I never noticed, and I've gone through about 8 or 9 gallons of premix joint compound. thankfully pretty much all the work I was doing was repair work, so not knowing about the concave isn't such a stinker.
I’ve been a taper for 8 years now and everyone that I know around here already knew about it and we use both side. And not sure if you were doubling (2nd coat) or what but looks way different then what we’re used to lmao and get a hawk and trowel like a real taper
the concave side does not the sticker side! it can be bent either way. I prefer a flat knife because then I can use either side and get the same results. I don't want to think about which way the knife is bent because this is distracting and would slow me down. I have 15 years experience is the finishing business
If you look at the handle of the knife one side should be smooth and the other side should have a logo on it thus eliminating the need to mark it to distinguish one side from the other

DANG!!! I checked my 12'' knife, and it does have a concave side (on the lable side too). Thank you for the tip... I subscribed to your channel.
Not aware of that feature, Paul. Thanks for pointing that out. Just got some fibafuse. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the tip.

Is it pretty standard when you buy a knife at Lowe’s and Home Depot for the sticker to be on the concave side?
I saw in the ither video you mentioned people sealing the drywall before mudding. I have never done that except for once when I applied popcorn.

Another clean and precise work
Hey there Annie!✌🏻 Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend!😎 -Paul
How do you reuse and clean your drop cloths for drywall work? Mine always have clumps of mud from drops and get super dusty
Concave side pushed flat on the flats, bow of the concave side to the wall on the butts, always came out best that way
I love your videos which have been very helpful. Thank you. Do the same rules apply if you are doing a skim coat over sheetrock on a ceiling repair? Thanks again.
Depends on the patch. If the whole patch needs mud your gunna use the non concave side applying pressure on one side and working all the way out so you don't have a line
So use the non-sticker side to apply mud and the sticker side to take the mud off/ smooth out
Just watched your video, i’m in Scotland, i just think its a bit quicker with two trowelled on coats with 11 & 14 inch trowels no edges n a light sand to finish, each to their own, but your blades are good, what make are they?
How are you getting mud on only part of the knife and how are you sliding the knife to prevent the mud from dripping off the side and falling on you
A lot of people don't explain both side. Thanks
Wow! That's great info!
I always use the flat side but this makes so much more sense! I've used A curved trowel occasionally and this looks like the same concept.. smh that i didn't get it till now! Definitely gonna use it that way next time!! thanks Paul!!😊

Saw another video yesterday that mentioned 4 inch taping knives have this too and wanted more info on that. This video was helpful, thanks!
They all have some degree of concavity….. Even a 2” knife
It's a feeling and nothing else. Not to take away from ANY of this. I'm a baby in this world of contractordom. You feel the concave and it does flow but your hands will flow as well. So many new knives seem to be flat. How would you/can you add a bend to it yourself? Thanks!
break it in if you flip the knife hes using arround and tape for a few hours the concave is gonna be on the other side
Your experience is showing, didn't have UA-cam when I started this trade
Nice work buddy
