Was a custom builder for 37 years. You do meticulous work, bro. 🙂 Great job and video. Thank you and God Bless. #drywall
My issue is I am more of a handyman so my work varies. Don't get enough practice with drywall. Usually, the result of a water leak when I do. But your vids are great and I have learned a lot. Thank you my friend...
Thanks for the video share. I have been struggling with this condition. I have mudded, sanded and re-mudded several times. Now I have the knowledge to fix this error once and for all. Thank you
I’m a DIY, this is a great video. Really like the explanation of where the mud is going on the knife and why.
I'm a DIY'er in Oakland, CA. Thank you for teaching me how to patch the various stress cracks and holes. Next week I plan to apply knockdown texture to the final coats I did this weekend. What I learned from you: 1) Use paper tape over fiberglass mesh, unless it's a very small patch. 2) Use quickset (I use 90 minute because I'm super slow) to embed the tape and prefill big gaps 3) Use all purpose to coat because it sands easier and my local Oakland HD store doesn't carry topping 4) Use a 12-inch knife for final coats and extend the patch outward at least a foot, probably even more. I do each step per weekend, so one patch tapes me 3 or 4 weekends to complete -- unpainted!, but that's fine by me.
DIYer here. Butt joints give ne fits, mostly due to not getting mud at right consistency. Like this video; videos of the actual job are very helpful
I'm a painter, I under all the concepts for taping but the biggest learning curve for me is in the technique for loading a large knife, portioning the mud on it and applying it evenly with the first pass. This is a crucial step that's often overlooked. It's like trying to make nice cuts with a brush but you're dipping it up until the metal.
I have some water damage need to do some drywall rip out and repair! I will be thinking of you and applying your tips!
I'm in the middle of a nightmare. I'm taping the drywall in my shop and when I bought the pre-mixed mud I made the mistake of buying Topping mud instead of General Purpose. I taped everything and was putting on the second coat when I happened to notice on the back of the bucket of premix it says not to use it for embedding tape or covering fasteners.
I called USG and they said there is no glue in the Toppiing mix to hold the tape on and that I should probably take it off. I was surprised how easily the tape pulled off once I got the end started so it's probably a good thing to do it now instead of having it fall off two years from now. I'm using a light spray of water and then scraping it with a putty knife, being careful to go easy on the paper.
I'm taking off most of the mud that was on either side of the tape because I couldn't get a straight answer from them on whether the General Purpose mud would hold if I just went over the Topping mud with it.
I told them it was MY mistake but that it would be nice if there was a stronger warning on the front of the bucket so that an average guy could be warned a little easier. Usually I'm the OCD type that is careful about the products I buy but I just saw "joint compound" on the front of the bucket and grabbed it.
I hope this helps someone else.
You should be using ProForm... USG is just not what everyone thinks it is. I use proform for taping, covering nails/screws and finishing work. One product that exceeds anything USG makes.
Most people skip this step, but durabond goes on first. It’s the powder in a brown bag. Then use your green lid to embed tape. Then blue lid for subsequent top coats. This covers your warranty from USG in case they have a bad batch of mud goes out. They pay you to fix the job. But don’t skip a step.
Hey Paul, tore down real bad wall paper on plaster and covered the wall with 1/4 gypsum panels. Ended the hassle of skim coating as well as the time. Its takes getting used to and the flexiblilty of 1/4 is beneficial. Thanks for the vids..
I knew this could be done! Wish me luck, I am a DIYer and going to attempt to smooth the ceiling as best I can. All the joints show now, which to me looks awful. Thanks for your advice. I've watched twice, hope I've got it.
Diyer here. Great tutorial. Seems easy butt joint finishing is all based on the initial taping coat. If I lay it down bumpy I'm screwed? Lol
I like the way you making your video.
I will making one vidio like you soon .
Thanks
#Paulpeck this is me just catching up with your finish video respect my friend from Scotland
Ok just watching butt joint video now thanks
I do property restoration, and I'm put with a partner. My partner uses curved trowels. Recently, I bought a new set of Husky knives, and I have an old Richard 12" that I use for skimming. So my partners method is to do one curved trowel on wither side of the butt joint then one down the centre on the next coat, then skim with a flat (I think) trowel on the 4th coat 🙄. My method though is usually a pass down either side applying mud (10 inch knife) then a pass down either side to feather, then a pass along either side again, and then down the centre. The husky knives are nice in that, on the concave side of my 10 inch knife, the outer edges have curved the other way from feathering edges, so the knife doesn't leave gouges. I actually use the concave side on every 2nd/3rd coat, then skim with the convex side.
For taper joints I do one pass down the centre for the 2nd coat, then basically do the same as a 2nd coat butt for the 3rd, then a tight skim.
For corners: tape coat, second, and third coat are done with a 6 inch knife (side knife to get mud on the wall to install tape). The skim coat is done with an 8 inch knife.
Nails depend. I usually do them last, and they usually get a coat per trip when I do it. I think my partner gives them 3 coats. I'd do 4. 3 with a 6 inch (tiny bit the fist time, float the second time, join the screws the third time in a line) then skim with an 8 inch. Before I worked with this partner, skimming wasn't part of my usual operation. I was a tape-and-two plasterer (3 coats) but the company gives time the time to do it, and I like the results, so I've adopted it. Skimming leaves plaster smooth as glass and fills in imperfections from drying.
Great job. I dont get why finishers use those mud boxes when you can get a great finish with a knife.
I have decent taping skills but like many other diyers I end up with mud all over me and the floor. I know you stress neatness and I suspect much of that comes from the technique used to get the mud from the pan to the drywall but your pan is usually too low in the frame to see how you're loading the blade. Are there any videos you could point us to that would give us a closer look.
I 100% agree
I’d love to see the pan, I always get way too much mud
#drywall ....enjoy d video....bery informative 🥳
man that garage is coming along now mate , you put some work in there buddy ,
I chucked my mud and hawk to the ground the other day in frustration 😮💨
I had to clean up and call it a day….
Some days go perfectly then randomly I lose the plot.
Hi, did you use a bigger knife on the 2nd coat? I'd like to watch you from start to finish with taping, inside, outside corners, & all your coats. Thanks for the video. 👍🇺🇸😊
is there always going to be a hump in the middle. I have a problem with the middle being hump
This is great! I just started scraping the popcorn from my '79 fixer upper. How do you feel is the best way to repair gouges in drywall/sheetrock that goes down to the brown layer?
The hump is always still visible if the lighting is a certain way.
How do you float out new drywall to old drywall. At least 1/8 lower on newer side. On 3rd coat floating maybe 2 more coats?
Good video/Painter.
Did you thin your mud with water before doing butt joints? I'm I'm trying to learn
Ok how u get it right with a tape coat and a bed coat what happen to skim coat. Really
I live in a rental house and the ceiling that mets the wall has a 1 or less inch gap.in some areas. How fo I fix it and muddy the corner? Please help me.. Thank you
Are any boards that meet that are not factory edges considered a butt joint?
Yes, that’s it Kyle.👍🏻
@@PaulPeck gotcha this is one thing as a painter I could never understand without being taught hands On, hopefully I got it now lol
are you using the concave or convex side of trowel?
Not flat. Could never hang cabinets on that joint
I’m a DY’er. I have a question about the mesh tape u use. Can that particular tape and brand b substituted instead of using paper? Is the strength any greater, the same or lower in comparison to paper? Thanks
Use paper when possible. I learned my lesson 20 years ago. To save time I used mesh and hot mud (powder in bags). Did the entire room in one day. Over time the joints got hairline cracks. I use paper all the time now. Never get an issue. Fiba fuse has just come out. Similar to paper. But Paul says he doesn’t do the corners in it. So I’m not changing my banjo to do seams in fibafuse. Paper works fine.
Renaissance Man awesome insight, thank u for the reply back. I know paper has more resilience than mesh but i figured maybe there was new technology with this fiber fuse that gives the strength of paper in mesh.
Nicholas Huss St Gobain ADFORS will claim their fiber mesh tape is. They sell their stuff at Cheapo. It’s called Fiba Tape. I use their 3’ wide sheets to do plaster repair. Stuff is amazing. Self sticks right to the wall. Maybe with the new technology the mesh has gotten better. Paul and some of the other guys I refer to haven’t said it to be. So I can’t risk it on a remodel in a expensive home. Don’t do this to lose money.
very nice mate !
looks ok...
Just get the trim tex buttboard... will eliminate all the butt joints
When using butt boards, you’ll still have a butt joint. It just doesn’t have to land on a stud.✅👍🏻
What happens when the customer wants satin or simi gloss on the ceiling 🤔 😕
Depends on the natural lighting coming in. Might need a skim or two.👍🏻

your butt joints aren't flat unless you have recessed them
You should state that you're a diy finisher and not a professional.
Yet,, you're a professional watching this video😂.. Get the f--- out here
