    Those favorite meals from the past were actually survival techniques- that's a great point. And the frog analogy. We dont know that we are adapting every minute that we stay overweight. I love his approach and humility. And his voice and patois is soothing. So glad I ran into this. I'm an Esselstyn fan.

    You can make a good argument that the value that Josh adds is more powerful than the science that well educated and bright doctors have because knowing does not translate into doing. Doctors can impart knowledge (and a surprisingly high number of doctors are quite ignorant about good nutrition) and health warnings until the cows come home, but without a cultural buy-in to even consider change, followed by impetus to keep going, change does not happen and that in my mind is where Josh has so much to offer. It is so great that your paths crossed all those years ago. I look forward to the memoir and I'll definitely pick up the kindle book in the meantime. Please add the title in your notes when it comes out.

    Bad back? Please try the Mckenzie Protocol. Or see a physical therapist who is an MDT. And I’m so glad Rich that you mentioned the advances they’ve made and back surgery. They’re doing things now that are literal miracles. I worked in a physical therapist office for five years working through University and there’s no need to suffer the way he is. They’re performing surgeries now where you are literally walking out of the hospital the same day. He really needs to research it if he is suffering.

    Sending you guys and all affected by the fires good healing vibes. At 33:48 The Eric Goodman foundation training (I think that's what is being talked about) is pretty good. I did it daily for weeks, now a lot less. The videos I did are on UA-cam. A few years back while on vacation in the area I went to see the chiro, Dr Shay Shani, after hearing him on the podcast. Garrett and the trigger point injections were my favorite thing- he's the best! Dr Shani said I had spondylosisthesis, too. Not bad. Anyway I did that decompression table a few times, went home and couldn't really find anyone else to do it where I live. I did, but I didn't care for the guy and it was expensive. He talked to me about all his hunting trips while I was on the thing trying to heal....ha. How was I supposed to heal while he's talking to me about killing innocent animals for fun all the time. I ended up finding an inversion belt online (company is in Georgia) that you use while on an inversion table. If you Google "inversion belt" you'll see it. It makes it so it's just like being on the decompression table as far as the traction being at the hips, *not the ankles* like with regular inversion table. For whatever reason, with my particular bulging disc issue, hanging from the ankles made my back spasm and it would be even worse. The foundation training and inversion with an inversion belt really helped. Two other things I think really helped: using a rigid piece of plastic called Back Magic (on Amazon for about $10) to place under the lumbar curve, then lay on it for 10-20 minutes a day in supine position to help regain that curve (something else could be used though). Also lifting heavier weights at least once a week (in addition to any lighter weights and other exercise). Including walking lunges holding weight, single legged deadlifts, pushups with weight on back, and rows. 5 sets of 5-8 reps. My chiro said to do those and I have been. I've found those things all to be the most helpful and maybe that will help someone with chronic back issues. Infrared sauna, too, especially if it's more emotional holding patterns/ stress induced. Thanks for the podcast.

    You gave a mini speech in the beginning of the audio podcast about the current wildfires, yet you failed to mention the mass shooting that occurred in Thousand Oaks, just a few hours prior, that took the lives of young people. I was disappointed Rich. They deserve to be also be acknowledged.

    • @richroll
      @richroll  5 років тому +10

      Eva you’re absolutely right. It was a terrible oversight on my part. I can’t excuse it but to explain I had already recorded that intro a week ago and knew I needed to redo it. I was able to get back into my house in the middle of the fire to check on it and took the few minutes I had to re-record the intro. I was admittedly traumatized at that moment and just riffed off the top of my head in the moment without having the time to really think through what I was going to say. Last night I realized the error but did not have access to my equipment to re record it as it’s all at my house and we couldn’t get back in. By no means am I insensitive to the tragic shooting. It’s my community. I just erred as all humans do. My apologies. I did address it in my Instagram live from the house. I hope this at least clarifies things. But again no excuses.

    just how isolated is this topic of conversation being plant based doesnt save the world this is the american world view😂 99% of crops are grow with artificial fertilizer and all sorts of chemicals sprayed to protect them..the chemicals become part of the plant ecosystem, its as bad as eating farm grown animals..there is only certain amount of land that can grow plants.. dont know when rich will come out of his mindset and propose moderation in consumption of any product than overuse

    I definitely CANNOT be a vegan, im more on the paleo keto side of things. That said, I think people need to find what works for them, and do it. And quite telling each other what is right for others. Several people in my family have reversed diabetes on keto and paleo and it works for us. Hopefully we can move on from the dogma. He made one comment about you can't get enough nutrients from meat, that unfortunately just isn't true.
