- Who loves a Pottery Barn dupe??🙋🏻♀️ In this DIY dresser makeover, I show you step by step how to get a wood look on ANYTHING using paint!
It is such a simple DIY and with a little practice, you'll be DIY-ing your way through 2021.
I can't wait to see your results!
I used tinted primer by Zinser, I had tinted to an almond color called open Canyon by Behr
I used varathane GEL stain in the color Briarsmoke
I used Behr paint sample in the color French Silver
Topcoats I recommend are: Soft Touch Poly by Rustoleum or any Matte Polycrylic
DIY dresser makeover 2021
I just completed this project I can’t thank you enough! Never did this before and it was easier than expected. Your tutorial was so awesome and I so appreciate your paint colors that’s half the battle
So I tried this technique out for the first time on a kitchen table & it came out beautifully! This method is very forgiving & looks so good. It sold on marketplace the same day. Thank you so much for sharing this technique it’s a game changer.
I’ve looked at tons of tutorials trying to psych myself up for doing a wood look on my laminate coffee and end tables. This is, by far, the best look I’ve seen. Now I can’t wait to try it!
Absolutely amazing.
Agreed, best tutorial
I agree.
Go for it ! I had the same kitchen cupboards for 13 years. Started on the inside and never stopped- love my kitchen now
I’ve wanted to redo some furniture I have in the spare bedroom to move to mine, and today I sold everything but my mattress and when I got started sanding my project pieces down I realized the nightstands were particle board with a coating instead of real wood. This is the first video I’ve actually seen that I can probably recreate without messing everything up and spending a fortune!
I think I’ve watched this 20 times. Stunning look and beautifully artistic. Everything is perfect.
That is so nice of you to say! I’m so glad it was helpful!
I agree! I'm just watching it again after watching another Black Sheep video and my son said., "You watched this one yesterday..." lol! He's watching them now too it seems :)
I did this technique on my laminate kitchen table top (left legs and chairs black) and it came out amazing! I sealed with polycrilic, about four coats. I let the table sit for about five days before I used it (a little over protective at first, lol). We have been using it heavily for 7 months now and it’s holding up beautifully! We throw keys on it, book bags, books, etc and no chipping or scratching has happened. I did get placemats, but hot dishes or spills hasn’t been and issue either. If you’re hesitant, don’t. If you are watching this you already hate your furniture piece… give it a go! I didn’t need a new kitchen set because of this tutorial. Thank you for doing this tutorial!!! 🙃
YAY!!! ❤️❤️ I’m so glad to hear that!!!
BTW...I follow your tutorials and have completed with 100% satisfaction 4 pieces and they sold over night! You are the best TEACHER on UA-cam!
Wow, that makes me so glad to hear, thank you 🫶
Wow. I love it! The piece turned out beautiful. You’re truly gifted and thank you for sharing.
The broom technique is worth a subscribe. I am heading out tomorrow to get one. Best kept secret I've seen. Thank you.
I did this on my dining table…gorgeous. I got carried away while “brushing” flinging stain on my walls in my dining room….newbie error I’m sure. Still, I love it!
Absolutely loved this video! I started painting furniture a year ago this is a great technique for beginners like me. The dresser I painted was a success. Thank you for sharing😊
Your videos are always so informative. I love how you look like you're dancing with the whisk broom. Best DIY videos on UA-cam!
OMG, that is fantastic! Thank you for sharing your secret. That broom makes all the difference!
Gran cambio, maravillosa técnica gracias por compartir este video, felicidades es mágico ver lo que se puede lograr con dedicación, saludos desde Costa Rica,Centroamérica 💯👌👍👍👏👏👏🇨🇷
Gorgeous finish! You’re so talented! Thank you for having videos that are concise!
Love this! I’ve done all those tones with chalk paint, I will definitely try the stains 😊
I did it on a coffee table, but couldn’t find gel stain so I used decking stain and it also worked! Thanks so much for sharing!!
This is a great video. Good tutorial and I love the results. One recommendation.... Your “music only” parts of the video are way, way ,way, too loud. I had to constantly be adjusting the volume because I was waking up everybody in the house during the “music only” parts. You need to tone that portion of this video down in bed and this becomes “perfection”. Love the song though dispute the volume issues!
Agree
New subscriber here and am BINGE watching all your other videos now! Thank you for sharing this technique, I can't wait to try it. I'm very new at refinishing furniture so I'm cramming as much learning as possible before testing it out on a piece and I have to say, your videos are fantastic, not just because they are a great tool, but you're also SO humble and you explain things! There are a few out there doing videos that obviously love the camera more than the furniture, but not you. Keep up the GREAT work!
Thank you, I’m glad you’re here ❤️
I love it I want to do it on my front dresser maybe it’ll come out like yours you did a great job on it love it
This is beautiful!!! Exactly how I want my bathroom vanity to look! Thank you!
yay! Glad it was helpful!
After having done a chalk paint piece of furniture, I too decided there is an easier way. I like the staining and texture style versus chalk paint and one can attain similar results.
Great job!!!! Thank you for posting this video 😁 I only do this as a hobby. I restored my son's dresser/ changing table that came back to me after 13 years. He is 15 now and it turned out beautiful! Love your techniques and will apply them as I have two other pieces of furniture, 1 laminate 1 veneer to work on. Definitely need to watch a few more so I can learn! Thanks again Liked and Subscribed 😊❤
I’m so glad! ♥️
I’ve been looking everywhere for a technique just like this for my dining table! Thank you! Liked, subscribed, commented for you 💙🥰💙
Set up in my garage. Sure comes in handy. Works great
You are so detailed with your work.I appreciate your beautiful work love this look and so trying it,thank you be blessed
Not just a great job but great jams too!! Thank you for sharing and letting us enjoy the process
OK... So let me start by saying I am absolutely in LOVE with your technique. The results are flawless. I am about to attempt my piece using this technique, but I was curious whether you are letting the gel stain dry completely before dry brushing French silver? So excited to try this on a ladder shelf I recently built! Thank you for these incredibly informative tutorials!
I love this, going to do on my kitchen table!
This finish is so beautiful and thank you for the tips!!
You are so welcome!!!
Great video and thank you for that tip with large brush. I'm a follower of yours.
Subscribed (cuz you gave us your money maker tip!)
Would love to see a Colefax Avenue Gray dupe!
Great technique. Just FYI, I missed a lot of what you were saying in your voiceover because the music was louder than your voice and I had to turn it down. I’m glad you had everything in the description. I’m going to check out other videos of yours but I wanted to let you know about the sound issue. Thanks!
Thank you so much, I tried to fix it and it didn’t work, I need to get on that! ❤️
Thanks you for the techniques! I’m gonna do this on my garage door and think it’ll look awesome!
I went to the orange big box store and they wouldn’t tint the primer. I was bummed! So I just bought a can of exterior paint and had them tint that.
Boo to them not tinting it for ya! How cool! This would look awesome on a garage door
Great broom tip! Thanks! I use the paint/stain combo but feel like the added step with the broom is gonna be a game changer! Thanks for sharing 😊
Oh it is for sure a game changer!
I love watching your videos
I watch a lot of painting videos and I appreciate you giving you top secrets away I am like you I just do something till it looks good and easy lots of times I mess it up too but I enjoy the way you describe the things you’re doing. Keep up the good work. I’ll be watching for more from you. ❤️🙂
Haha we are alike then! Thanks for watching and sticking around, DJ!!
Wow! Great video! I’ve painted furniture for years but got away from it. Now we’re moving into a new home and I need to cut some cost with some DIY furniture pieces to fill it! Super excited to try your technique!
I liked and subscribed😜
I LOVED THIS ! I've gotta say that I was holding my breath when you were dry brushing because it looked so good before that - but it looked even better after. I hope I don't mess up my piece at that step... haha
Haha! Thanks, you’ll be glad you tried it!
This was a great video, i have done lots of different paintings techniques, love the little broom trick! Definitely trying, thank! Beautiful end result 💕
Thanks! Yes, the broom is my secret weapon, especially for furniture that has dents abs dings!
Yes! I love how all your wood finishes don’t look so FAKE!
Gorgeous finish!
Love this video! Excellent work! I have some furniture that I want to try and stain and this is exactly the look I want! Definitely subscribed and I will be watching all your videos! Thanks so much!
Wow!!!!!!! Now I just need to find all natural dupes. No harsh chemicals, wish me luck! I want to transform all my ikea dressers in my room plus I have real wood end tables to do and that’s a whole other story!!!? No idea!!!! Newbie! 🙈👀🤷🏻♀️
Funny you say that, bc I’ve bought some natural paints snd planning to do a tutorial in the next few weeks! I really like fusion mineral paint line and earth safe finishes ❤️❤️❤️ I’ve done a water based version of this but in brown but still not like super natural products, but yeah, stay tuned!!!
Really love this paint effect. Def going to try this on a free piece I picked up tonight. It has no legs so going to try DIY Wife’s base for it.
Gorgeous!!!!!!!
I love your techniques. You are the best!
So far my favorite way to stain finally someone made it easier. Thank you very much
Mine too! I’m glad it was helpful!
It looks amazing! Thanks for sharing your technique, I love it!
I love this technique! I wish I could like it twice!☺️
You’re sweet, thanks ❤️
Final result is the look of mildly tempered wood similar to raising the grain. Fir has a greyish brown tint similar to this technique. Very Nice and relaxing.
This is so beautiful! I plan on trying this asap! Thank you!
The dresser finish is beautiful. I was wondering about the end result when seeing the streaked stain. Your "broom" technique is awesome. Do you have any recommendations on how to get a good result on cabinet doors that have half circle type trim pieces inset creating several small sections?
I recently built a built in drawer about 12 drawers and it came out great! But it’s painted in a solid color almost light beige and it’s just missing something, I’m going to try this technique and hope i do it right 🤞🏼
Wow what a transformation on laminate. I’m going to try ASAP. Thanks for the secret tip.
You are so welcome!
I want to try this on an old laminate table I have, but have questions. 1) I'm guessing any water based primer would work? I have a gripper primer left over. If not I have water based Kilz too 2) I noticed you opened 1 of the drawers when you were putting the gel stain on and then closed it back. I'm unsure when i should apply the stain there and run the broom around the edges? 3) Do you ever wipe the excess stain off the broom on a rag? 4) It looks like you reapply the gel stain again in spots, maybe to refine your broom look? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance. Love your technique and work!🥰
I saw this on youtube and your are without a doubt really talented. I am gonna try this on a walk-in closet that I am making for my wifey. It is a much larger scale than what is shown here and my question is do you think I should do this technique before or after I install the different shelves, cabinets and wardrobes in the walk-in? Any guidance will be appreciated. Thanks again for your fantastic video.
I did this on two corner cabinets I have. Turned out so great!!! Subscribed. Thanks!!!
I'm so glad to hear that!!!
Your finishes are so professional! Thank you for sharing
Thank you! Glad you like them!
So lovely , thank you . I’ve now subscribed so can see all your other great work 👍 Well done, I love it !!!
Thanks so much 😊

Looks amazing!
This is a beautiful look. I really like the texture of the "stripes", that looks so good. They're out right now, but I'm waiting for the Hemnes collection to come back in stock at Ikea.
I worry about you not wearing a respirator… you are so creative!
Could you do this with grey paint and put the silver threw it I’d appreciate maybe if you could do a wee side table are something showing this way cause I want to paint mind grey but just don’t want in pure grey are maybe you already have something like this in you videos but this turned out absolutely beautiful
I liked and subbed for having learned your moneymaker broom technique. Hopefully I've contribute to your livelihood!!
You are such a talented gal
This is absolutely amazing!!! I can't thank you enough for this video. I have been watching a ton of videos and trying to piece parts of them together to get this result. Oh how I wish I would have found this sooner. Thanks again! Liked and subscribed!:)
I was in the same boat a few years back! Ppl like you are exactly why I made my channel and share everything I’ve learned ❤️
Nice as usually. not my favorite one, but nice.
It does look lovely, please include how much time it took you to do the project, what the project cost you and what you sold it for. Thank you!
Amazing!!! Absolutely stunning job. Will try on our malm bedside cabinets... Fingers crossed
It’ll look great!
At the end when you're wiping off the grey/silver paint... are you using a dry paper towel? My volume for some reason is going in and out so I don't know if you've said 😕 I love this sooo much! 😍😍😍😍
Absolutely beautiful! Love the broom technique! Do you use a different broom for each project? Awesome work❤❤❤
I use the same brush about 10 times and then chuck it. You can clean it too with mineral spirits if you’d like. I usually clean it up a bit with mineral spirits after each use. Nothing perfect just get most the globs off
First of all let me say I’m a huge fan of your tutorials. I’ve just retired and I’m going to update our old pine bedroom set with a ‘weathered look’. When I paint walls I like to use a pad for the edges and I wondered if this might be a useful tool for applying the poly at the end?
Thanks! I bet you’re right!! Let me know!
Loved this and the way it turned. Gorgeous work.....phenomenal job and thanks for some great tips to achieve the results we are all after!!😊🙂👍🏾👍🏾🏡🏡
Thanks, Gigi!
Thanks for your videos, they are the best!
I just finished an outdoor table with your method and the results are great.
What kind of exterior top coat with sun and UV protection should I use?
Thank you for your generous information. 😊
Wow! fantastic work.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks, glad to help, Dave!
Question: I attempted this process on a wood table top and it didn’t turn out as I’d hoped. I really want to start fresh and redo the process. If I sand
The piece first, do you think it would then be best to prime the piece again before adding paint? Then redo the base coat, etc? Thanks for your advice. :)
Whenever I mess up I try to wipe away as much glaze as I can from the entire section, wait for it to dry and then paint it again where it needs abs then redo the glaze, it’s a pain but the only way I’ve found really fixes the mistake entirely rather than looking like I patched it up ❤️
Excellent look.
This looks beautiful
I love all your projects 😍❤ and I would love to understand everything you say but my English is not good, do you have any video with translation for Spanish?
I'm going to have to try this with my Expedit cases!
Thank you for all your ideas
Are you able to disclose how long this took you overall? :) Love the look!
I usually give myself an hour for each step, and that’s how I charge clients also, keep in mind that some steps take a while to dry like the gel stain or glaze can take days to dry but the actual work time is an hour.
Here’s a breakdown for a normal piece
Clean & sand/prep - 1 hour
Prime - 1 hour
Paint - 1 hour
Glaze or gel stain w/broom technique- 1 hour
Clear coat or wax finish - 1 hour
So 5 hours total,
In my business for a client I would charge for transport, shopping for hardware and picking up paint plus cost of supplies too. Usually tacks on another 2.5 hours
Hi, first; just want to let you know how much you inspired me! Second; Thank You! Third how long should I wait after putting on the Primer before using Varathane? Lastly; how long overall it takes from start to finish for it to dry after Application to place Accessories on top? Hope to hear from you. Thanks again
You are welcome and thanks! Just make sure the primer is dry, probably 2 hours or so at least. After I apply the Varathane, I wait till it’s dry to the touch to apply the French silver dry brushing. Now, that is the downside to using oil based is that it takes longer to dry, it usually takes 2-3 days to fully dry and be ready to be moved and styled etc.
Finally found the look we've been searching for. I gathered all the supplies(except the magic broom 🤦♀️). How long did you let the stain set prior to wiping down with the paper towel? Thanks for posting this, it's beautiful work!
YAY! this look is so great and timeless imo. Haha the magic broom! I will call it that from now on! I get to work pretty quickly after I apply it. I usually will work on one or two drawers at a time. So the time it takes to get it on the whole front and then immediately start wiping the excess away till I get the look I want. Usually just one or two wipes over each spot is good for me then I will do the broom part. The sections I like to work in are: 1. Front 2. Side 3. Other side 4. Top . So I do entire process before moving on to next section. You can do it any way that you find works for you though 💜
Thank you for this great video 😃
Lovely!! Good job!👍
Hi there, I loved this so much and would like to do on my kitchen table, did you state in the video that after you put on the tinted primer, you put a coat of the canyon paint too? Would it be necessary to put a primer when I am putting on just sanded wood on my table? I appreciate your help. Thank you!
Omg This looks amazing
Hi is the color canyon your using a Behr paint? Thanks, love your tutorials!
Sick technique... So good.
I love Declan McKenna! The song you’re playing
Looks amazing
I have a dark colored piece of furniture, and I’m wanting to do this same look. Is it going going to make a difference since you already started with a light piece of furniture??
Nope, just prime and you’re ready to go
Great job ! You go girl .
Thank you ♥️
Love it.. can you do this on curved furniture, like a headboard or do you have a video on something like that
I have done this finish on all types of furniture, you could buy a small natural brush for smaller parts or I usually just use the side of the broom if I need. I have another video on a curvy french dresser called "Faux Bois Finish" you might like that one too!
Beautiful!!!
Thanks for the great video. I’m going to try my luck doing this type of thing. Question, what is the main difference between the Gel Stain and what I bought Antiquing Glaze? Thanks
