- I take old Ikea rast and make them look like they came from pottery barn! A fun and quick furniture flip anyone can do! This is an EASY to follow DIY, I show you step by step how to get this special finish.
*not mentioned in the video but I did 3 coats of primer to get my dresser white. It doesn’t matter what you use to get the piece white, paint works great and may be quicker bc primer is kind of thin. I just used primer bc I had tough stains I was dealing with
Products used:
Sanding sponge
Famowood filler
2 ikea rast small dressers
Kills primer (or white paint of your choice) I like ovation from lowes a lot
Ovation paint in satin finish in color Ball & Twine
Clear Matte topcoat by varathane
small broom
12-3/5 inches Gold handles from Amazon (link) amzn.to/3xeyIMu
I went back and rewatched but want to make sure that you painted the paint/top coat mixture directly over the primer. So no other base coat of paint needed?
You might need to do a coat of paint if your primer doesn’t cover well but I was lucky and primer did the trick for me. Primer is more sheer than paint so you might get away with fewer coats using paint though. I did about 3 coats of primer on the purple dresser and just one on the white
@@blacksheephouse That makes perfect sense!! Thank you!!
I love how you painted these
I must admit I doubted you on these tables. They looked cheap and not worth fooling with. Wow! What a transformation! They are beautiful! Good job girl!
I also love that you don't talk too much and , or, drag things out. To the point with your pics, and topic. Thank you!!
OMG, I've been looking for affordable nightstands for over a year now! these look PERFECT for my space!!! I'm definitely going to try this out... thank you so much for sharing this DIY!
I would keep them just like you did them. What an improvement, they turned out beautiful. Like your painting technique. Great job. Leta from Canada
Well done, and totally agree on your thinking for IKEA furniture it’s not meant to last forever
I think so many people are doing lifestyle in their channels. People really enjoy seeing other people's lives! I would put everything on here :) I would definitely watch
WOW!! These look BEAUTIFUL!! Love how your daughter “assists” and is encourage to use those mechanical and creative brain cells. Personally I don’t like brass because it was so overused in the 1970s (I am a baby boomer) so I would have used black handles but I must admit the brass looks good too. I would keep this channel a furniture channel. We can watch both channels
They look amazing--and the gold tone-on-tone with the finish looks very sophisticated.
They're beautiful! Keep the cold.
You have a great little helper there! So adorable!!
Such a cute little helper🥰
Awwww, cute little helper!
You have me so inspired! I gathered up all the necessities that you mentioned and I’m painting tables right now. Next I’m going to do my bedroom furniture. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
They look so good! I love the gold handles and wouldn’t change the finish! Perfection!
I have transformed an old (ugly) hutch I got for free. All of my ideas came from watching your videos. Only I used the hand broom technique along with your deck brush to soften the blend. . I also used some old paint I had laying around the house. I didn’t really care because the hutch was free but it turned out fabulous, thanks to you. ❤️
PS please…you are not lazy by not stenciling the outside drawers as most other furniture artists do. As a would be buyer, I could care less about that.
I’m glad this channel inspired you to create!!! I too favor using the deck staining brush to soften it ❤️ I’m exclusively using 1/2 paint 1/2 clear coat as my “glaze/gel stain” now bc it’s so much easier to get the colors I want and use oops paints I buy discount or have laying around.
I have been searching and searching for a way to update old rustic furniture and I think I’ve found it! Thank you so much for breaking down the beautiful pottery barn dupe!
Lovely!!! stay with this color with the gold hardware no need to white wash!
Wow this bedside tables looks beautiful 😓 💯 lux ⭐️🤍
Watching from Australia 🇦🇺
How fun my little channel has made it around the world!!
Super happy and proud of you Kyser woman!!! Love from Pawnee Oklahoma
If you start introducing a variety of content into this channel, the algorithm will have a fit. 😊 I would definitely suggest starting a separate vlog channel if you’re wanting to have more freedom with your content.
Thanks for the advice ❤️ means a lot
I was curious why you don’t take the drawers out.
I used to take out the drawers and paint the outside of the drawers on the side with a cute peekaboo color maybe just a coffee color would be good for this piece. I did a gray nightstand ones for my bedroom and my accent color is yellow so I painted the sides of the drawers… Yellow obviously. Most people don’t see it but when they do (if I sold it) they think it’s extra and very charming.
I would love to hire your assistant! She seems very experienced! Such a cute mini me you have!
This your most impressive makeover!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤩
Great video! I like how you talk about salvaging cheap furniture because I have a lot of that in our house! I was a little nervous watching you paint the top of the dresser in your fuzzy sweater and with the neck strings hanging down☺️!
Love the gold hardware.
You have very quickly become one of my favorite furniture flipping channels. ❤️
Wowwwwww. Gold handles.
You should put a puck light in the top of your lamp! And use remote to turn it on and off 🙂 I really am liking the lamp!
Thanks for doing these videos, the solid colors are cool but I like the wood look and was not sure how to do it.
I love this idea!!
I have a set of end tables that I will be trying this on!
You are STILL my faaaaavorite!!! 😃🤗
You crack me up! ❤️
Great job and I like your little helper 🙋🏾♀️💕
Wow. Beautiful! I love the gold
What a good helper!🥰
I was literally thinking about making a glaze with clear coat and paint last night! I might try it today
Looks beautiful and expensive! Good job 👏🏼
Great job and totally elevated those nightstands. I would leave the brass--I prefer that to the higher contrast of black with the colors you used. Please keep doing furniture and perhaps add in small bits of staging if you wish, much as you did in this video.
subscribed off of this video alone!
amazing job i’ll start watching your other videos once i finish typing this comment lol
Fantastic!
That's AWESOME love that look and I love a quick flip thank you.
Stay with the gold handles it’s beautiful
Soft scrub. And if not soft scrub Ajax cleanser would definitely take off the pen marks.
I think thrifting would be relevant to this channel.
They look SO good!!
They look amazing
Beautiful! Love your style!
Absolutely stunning!!
this is such a fabulous upcycle. amazing technique. I am planning on doing something similar to an ikea malm dresser from FB marketplace. thank you so much for sharing!
also, the gold hardware looks fab, very tonally harmonious. I think you should keep the gold, but don't know what the rest of your bedroom will look like.
I love this
These are super cute!
Wow, love them. You better bet I'll be doin this.
I found your channel a few months ago, and it's been a game changer! I used this technique on a terrible looking 1970s veneer round side table that I bought on marketplace, and it looks amazing!
I’ve been trying to find something to work for my nightstands that are budget friendly and oh my god…. I’m doing this exact look! Thank you so much for sharing this 😊
For the side of the drawer, I’d just put some painters tape 1 inch away from the front and paint that part only. Just to make a clean line.
Love this will try i have
Love this i have a linen brush i think i can use this i will see thanks i have these chest i will change the handles just by looking at this video
I love it! A true “trash to treasure “ transformation!
I love your technique ❤ do you add any chalk paint powder for adhesion ? How do you make your paint not to peel off ?
Saw this and I subscribed! 👍👍 Love your work.. so creative
Wow! Great job.
Amazing work 👏
I’m trying to incorporate an Older Thomasville tower (real wood) and new Murphy bed which looks like it has an IKEA finish. Once I sand and primed the wood cabinet. Could I use the same technique on both? Thanks in advance 😊
I love what you did with these Rast dressers.
For the paint and varnish, so you mix it half and half?
Thank you! ❤
i wish i had seen this sooner. i just finished painting a nightstand and my paint was drying way to quickly and im not super happy with the finish. maybe i will take a sander to it and do a couple more thin coats like this.
thank you
wow. gorgeous.
…love!❤️ love!❤️love!❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 xx🏴
Awesome as usual ☺️
They look amazing! Love love the gold handles. Please link. Definitely gonna try this technique!!! 😍

I’d love to see your mood boards and plans for the new house! Don’t overthink creating a whole other channel. You can always just create a furniture refinishing, grocery shopping etc, play list on your existing. Keep it simple. 🤗 Wow, love the lamp hack at the end! You’re so creative!
These turned out beautifully! I wouldn’t have thought you could get such a good looking finish on these tables. I would keep the gold, but that’s just me. I can’t wait to see all the content on the new house!
Brilliant! I love it.
Such a great tip about drilling the new holes before filling the old ones!
The gold hardware is perfect. You are so clever and definitely talented Shannon, you can look past the faults furniture & create budget friendly yet stylish furniture.
Wow, love that technique definitely going to do that one! I love mixing paint & making it my own, when someone asks, " wow, what color is that?" It's nice to say, mine!
Looks incredible leave as is
They turned out really good, love the handles. Add design videos to this channel, you will have automatic viewers.
You can also place one of those lithium battery powered lights inside the lamp. You just need to press and voila! Let there be light!!! :-)
These turned out great. I would like to do this with a 1960 built in bookcase. Did you do any sanding between primer coats? I have some triple thick clear gloss polyurethane by Varathane. Would that work to mix with the Ovation paint?
Amazing🎉🎉🎉
It's amazing !!!!
We just followed your tutorial for some rast dressers for our bedroom and they look amazing! Thank you for the tutorial! I also tagged you on my Insta story so you should be able to see it there :)
Nice. 👌
I for one will be happy when the flip trend dies down. Over saturated with painted furniture and the prices are crazy. Making it hard for us who actually do this for a living.
I saw a half painted hunter green mid century mod Broyhill highboy that made my heart stop beating. It was done so badly. You can paint that beautiful piece if you know what you’re doing but 9/10 real mcm furniture looks better when it’s restored to its original.
These look great, how fun and creative. How has the supplement been working for you? Any difference?
Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial! It's great, and it makes me want to try it on my laminate mirror frame that's attached to a bathroom wall. It's dark brown, and I'd like to see if I can make it looks like this. A quick question that did you sand the whole IKEA dressers except the hole areas?
I love your furniture channel. Create a separate space for the home ideas. We can subscribe to both.
I think as always you created an amazing set of nightstands for what will be your new home! I'm so happy for you with the new home and congratulations! I do watch your furniture obviously, but I would be more than happy to see you do room makeovers, decor shop with me home stuff on this channel. A second channel might be something other people would like, but I would like to see it all in one place just so I don't miss the other stuff 🤔 If that makes any sense at all 🙄❣️ I truly love the large gold hardware on those two pieces, but really the overall look is going to come when you put it into the room with the other pieces you have so I can't wait to see what you're going to do with these once they're in the room with your other pieces 💯👍❣️💯😍❣️❣️❣️
Shannon, I have a question for you. This has to be one of my favorite techniques that you do. I have achieved this look on smaller pieces but I just recently(month or 2ago) did this on a coffee table top. I m not liking the uneven stripes. Do I need to sand off the polycyclic in order to start all over? Meaning paint the base then the glaze or just get away doing the glaze over. Hope this makes sense. Thank you for your time.
Looks great! I would suggest changing the handles to brass something like that candle stick holder lamp
I like that idea!
I LOVE THIS!! CAN YOU PLEASE make a video on how you clean your brushes and supplies! I struggle SO HARD with cleaning paint/stain etc out of my brushes and would love to see your way of doing it!! Love your videos!
I don’t know why you didn’t put down newspaper to protect the flooring from the paint.
Wow 😲
If the dresser I have is already white do I need to paint over it with the primer?
Another awesome transformation, looking forward to any content you want to contribute, I always learn something from you. Good luck with your move!!
For this technique can Ouse enamel paint? I have a gallon I bought to use with the dark glaze from your other tutorial. This process looks a lot easier. Also going over chalk paint so should I prime the chalk paint First?
OMG!!! These turned out amazing!!! I’m on IKEA website right now to see if they have these available. Definitely getting them! Thanks for the inspiration.
This is pretty amazing. I don’t usually care for Gold but it looks so good here.
Awesome makeover! I haven’t seen a technique like this before, will definitely have to try it out!
Wow
OMGosh I Love your little helper...she is Adorable!!!
Did I miss it…did you mention what that pink brush is and where you got it?
And………answered 🤦🏼♂️
These are awesome. I prefer black with that neutral tones. You are so talented.
