Why Shoot ProRes on the iPhone 13 Pro? (Real-world differences)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 лис 2021
- The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max can now shoot ProRes video internally. Many might dismiss this as giving visually-similar results albeit at hugely inflated file sizes; but if the use case is appropriate, filming in ProRes on an iPhone can certainly yield some worthwhile benefits.

#iPhone13Pro #ProRes
I've watched so many videos on ProRes and I've never heard anyone explain the difference between non-ProRes quite as clearly as you do. Thank you!
Nobody could have explained it better! Loved how your sum it up nicely, if it was me, talking about ProRes I might go on talking and making an hour video! 😂
Thanks brother! Hey an hour-long video on ProRes doesn't sound all that unreasonable 😂
Best explanation that I’ve seen so far on Pro Res, was going to go for a lower tier but as I do a little film making from time to time, this definitely changed my mind.
Truly EXCELLENT video. I've been looking for good, practical examples of the differences. Great Job!
Great explanation - straight to the point, no wasted repetition. Many thanks!
It's sad, that with these much bigger file sizes, the iPhone still does come with an extreme slow USB 2.0 lightning port.
I really think, it's time for an iPhone with a Thunderbolt port.
Exactly
And this will be a must reason to upgrade for users when the 14 launches
That's how Apple does it
@@prithvim7 yeah that’s so lame. It’s stunting growth for profit. Quite a pathetic model. Apple makes great products but their model is absolute bs.
Apple already got the solutions. they can’t just release them bc they will run out of “innovations” on their events 🤡🤦🏻♂️. If only Jobs were here
It will be revolutionary apple reveal :D
Haha still lightning on my 14 pr max 😥
Excellent video with a very easy to follow and clear explanation. Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Excellent video !! 👍👍👍 Thanks for sharing such good info.
Best video I have seen on explaining the difference. Thank you for the clarity and for being straight to the point! Well done!
Really enjoy your additional intel … it’s thorough & precise.
truly excellent video and explanation. thank you for saying a bit more about the type of compression being used in both cases.
The best and clearest explanation about ProRest. Thank you so much!
Hey dude. Your videos are fantastic. Thanks for this breakdown.
Amazing well written video, thank you
Great job bro. Love this video.
Very nice video as always.
Mate, this is an incredible explanation video. Thank you very much. Subscribed!
now that’s a perfect explainer. thanks!
Finally, somebody explaining it clearly and simply. Thank you.
Super clear explanation in really easy to understand fashion. Well done, Cheng
Thank you young man greatly appreciate your insights you're very thoughtful in the way you present these things with a balanced viewpoint I appreciate the information
Have a pleasant remainder of the week and weekend
Blessings Drew
Great video, well spoken and useful information :)
so, thanks for sharing, Really loved your efford and video.
Thanks for a very useful and well produced video.
Very interesting and detailed everything explanation, bravo 👏🏾
such a great review
Wow this is the hands down the best iPhone 13 Pro ProRes explainer video there is out there. Thank you :)
Great video ::) I think it´s quite amazing to have to option to record in ProRes on a phone
Mr Cheng has done an excellent explanation again ! Many thanks for your extremely high quality videos !!! You are a fantastic teacher !!!😊
Why is "Mr"? It should be a normal name, right?
Thanks for that elaborate explanation in such a sweet and short time frame. your video answer all I need to know. haha.
amazing vid!
Absolut brilliant Video and explanation !!! Top nudge
Your content quality and not asking to subscribe, made me to subscribe. Thanks .
great explanation
Fantastic video thanks just getting my new iPhone 15 promax in a couple weeks
thank you great video
I’m a video pro and ZY does a fantastic job of explaining this.
Subscribed!!! I make fishing videos and wasn’t sure if this would be worth it for me, since I have houurrssss of footage every trip. Thank you so much for the in depth explanation!
Awesome Video - clearly Someone who Knows What he‘s Talking About - thank you for the Video
thank u!
I already feel bad for the newbie who will disregard the info about file size and end up filling up their new phone without knowing why lol
Amazing video!!! I have a quick question for ya, is this still all the same for the iphone 15 promax?
Also thx for the video
_I started watching this video with the intent of telling this guy what he does not know, but by the end of the video I ended up, emptying my cup of everything that I thought I knew about video just to watch the video over again only to bow and say “master”_
Fantastic explanation. I think your thumbnail is letting this great, well versed content down.
Great!
Came here just to see the performance tests on the eve of the iPhone 14 Pro release but stayed for the presentation skills (even though already versed on codecs).
I was wondering if pro res increased audio quality thanks for the answer.
hi! in my test, Airdrop was faster than Lighting/USB 2.0, maybe it depends on the Mac receiving and the WIFI card model?
i started to use mavic 3 cine with prores 422 hq, and it looks ok so far on my mac (before m1 version), but the color grading is a little troublesome when i shoot it in d-log.
Can you do a video explaining how to color grade prores footage? I would like to match some of my footage to the coloring of @aidin robbins videos and can't seem to match the look with my iphone 13 pro. There are not many videos showing the best way to color grade iphone footage that I can find. I also can't seem to find a reason to even record in prores for a travel cinematic video vs HEVC if all we're doing is color grading too.
Do we know the bitrate it records at in 10 bit 4:2:2? My Panasonic S5 did 10 bit 4:2:2 at 150mps and I LOVED the image quality.
Shooting ProRes is also beneficial in "action scenes" where a lot of things move, here the compression HEVC becomes obvious with huge loss in image quality.
So dolby vision hdr can be turned on when shooting in prores codec?
Is there any alternative Image Capture version for Windows10?
Very good, its impossoble to copy to windows 10 users, very sad for me after buy iphone 14, need "processing..." before sending to windows, destroy the file and takes a lot of time to processing and sometimes dont works, stuck the processing.
This was by and far THE BEST breakdown of ProRes I’ve seen here on UA-cam. That also explained why my ProRes setting doesn’t offer a 60fps option.
You can get 4K60 ProRes in Protake and Filmic Pro, you can also say goodbye to your storage as well :)
Hopefully next year's Apple iPhone 15 Pro will have ProRes 4K at 60 fps?
@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI I’d be willing to shell out for a 2TB SSD configuration haha
Hi
Can you make a video on Android about MotionCam which enables you to Shoot 10 Bit RAW CinemaDNG Sequence?
The Color Space is 4:4:4
Great Channel : Can you PLEASE do a quick video explaining ProRes 4;4:4:4 cant find anything that makes sense. I understand that 4:2:2 take 4 pixels wide and 2 rows and takes 2 pixels from top row, 2 from bottom row and that's enough to create an image. I also understand 4444 is used more for special effects and motion graphics and it has an alpha channel. But can't find a good layman's term anywhere
Thanks a lot!
What cables I need to transfer from iPhone to iPad
How about ProRes Proxy? It's a lot smaller than ProRes HQ and a lot more bitrate than HEVC.
I copied movies made with pro res in my PC with Windows 10 but it opens and don’t play! I have the Professional edition, all codecs installed yet doesn’t work. Doesn’t run with VLC either. Why? Any ideas ?
Does 14pro max have a lightning usb 3.0?
I just discovered this today 4/2024, lol. 2:36 video ate up 11 GB. The image does look great though!
Nice. The iPhone finally deserves its Pro name.
ProRes gets transcoded to HEVC when transferring iPhone 13 Pro ProRes files to a PC, and it's really choppy in Premiere Pro (especially 4K), even after rendering/exporting, but it's smooth as glass in my M1 MacBook Air, along with being actual ProRes files.... and Airdrop works faster for me
I dont really get why they included prores without fast usb.
HEVC requires more cpu power because it's efficient 50% reduction in file size in the same bitrate of AVC
I love your British accent
I can’t understand why transferring Video over Airdrop is so slow. I mean lightning is limited to 480Mbps (60MBps), WIFI 6 on the iPhone can do 1200Mbps (150MBps) on an 80MHz channel so… why? It’s not using Bluetooth because that only does 2 Mbps so It is using WIFI but why so slow 🤔.
Great video. Well worth the Like and Subscribe. Looking forward to watching your other content.
Now just to try and justify the purchase of a 13 Pro Max over the 13 Mini I had set my heart on.
great choice!!! i got the iPhone 13 pro max in silver 128gb and uploaded an unboxing video on my channel! love this phone!!!!
No ProRes on 128gb model
@@alexanderslee yes there is.... It's just limited to 1080p
One of the biggest reasons is to mask your subject out of a green screen with much better accuracy around fine detail like hairs

Me: can’t see the difference
I was so stupid that I bought the iphone 13 128gb, and that means I cannot record 4k prores😅Would you still recommend recording prores 1080p, instead of 4k 10bit or dolby hdr vision?
4k 10 Bit Standard is better than 1080p prores
I made this mistake too and I just went back to the store and exchanged my iPhone 13 pro max for a 256 GB one . I feel much better now being able to record 4K on my iPhone 😊
COULD YOU BE ANY CLEARER? ....... AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING WORK MY MAN! WOW!
👍👍
If anyone is wondering why his explanation was so clear, it's because he used ProRes
😉
Phah! I can shoot 14 bit raw from my 10 year old camera that I bought for 100 bucks off eBay
I'll be interested when phones allow us to shoot in raw.
Eos m ?
@@paulatreides0777 hell yea 😄
The phones already do let shoot in raw. Check my latest two uploads. Recorded footage in raw dng sequence, shot on android smartphone. Wish good luck for iphones to match that..
How can I shoot in log with prores? Filmicpro doesn’t have this option for prores but it does for other settings.
not possible atm to my knowledge
@@elsollasombra actually it is possible right now with filmic pro on iPhone 13 pro.
@@adnan_velic oh really? I didn't find it out how to pull it off!
@@elsollasombra it is a option in filmic pro now
I know that most video recordings on Android phones (if not all) look like crap with all kinds of video compression artifacts and color banding. The video quality (or lack-there-of) looks very muddy and blurry. Hopefully Apple's ProRes technology on the iPhone solves all of those problems.
Somebody needs to invent a phone case that can accept a nvme drive!
Anyone know if there is a way or a point of shooting a wider gamma curve on iPhone footage?
Going to be using the 14 pro as a backup coverage camera for a shoot in a small recording studio with limited time, matching to some a7iii and fs7 footage.
The dynamic range and overall video quality has really impressed me. Of course it’s still not going to be able to shoot lowlight or pull focus but for locked down coverage… it’s actually feasible now to use it.
There's an app that does ProRes 60fps and I believe the MB/s is 1900 😐😬
Is it for Android, too, or only just for the Apple iPhone?
@@bobby1970 No, just apple. Samsung probably couldn't handle ProRes or a similar mode very well.
@@superdutyzack Cool, thanks.
0:47 My mom calling me
It's understandable that everyone wants best image quality possible but if you know what is 10 bit or prores you won't be shooting with iphone, I think you'll not only will see the huge difference not only with colors but also depth
Feel the pain 15 sec video is about 2 gb😢😢
1sr hopefully
Once iPhones record 12 bit ProRes RAW.
I just did 1 minute of Pro Res and it was 12.95GB! - I mean jesus christ!
I think prores in iphone is overrated on par with other "amazing" and "incredible" features of everyyears iphones
No matter using prores format, iPhone video dynamic range isn't good as a cinema camera 😂
I hope iphone 14 to film in 8k 😕because I’m tired of this 4k 60fps 🤦♂️
He is asian so I trust him 100%
Transfer times and atrocious USB connection of iphones kill all of the value
You’re supposed to wear your watch high but not THAT high
ProRes on iPhone does not make sense at all. As long as Apple refuses to disable DTM (Dynamic tone mapping) - you have no controll over exposure at all, hence - you won’t be abble to correct it in postprocess as it is all over the place… Even if the iPhone could shot 12bit RAW, it doesn’t matter as long as DTM is there… Shame on you Apple
It's take 4 hours to transfer 90 mins video. Useless. You just don't have the ability to check the footage on the spot to reshoot it if necessary.
I think the stupid thing apple's ever made are prores + lightning port
