    I've never installed one of these interior sliding doors or as some people call them "barn doors". There originally was a pocket door on the left side of the entrance to the bathroom that the homeowners wanted to get rid of. So this seemed like a good solution. I didn't think there was much to the installation. The rollers bolt to the door. You mount the rail to a header board that gets screwed to the wall. Make sure the rail is level. Then hang your door on the rail. Not very complicated so what could possibly be difficult about this.
    There are a few things to deal with that are a little out of the ordinary. To begin with, the door has to be oversized. The reason for this is that the door has two kind of blanket the opening. As a result, the door probably needs to be a minimum of 4 inches larger than the opening for the door. We had a 32 inch opening and so a 36 inch wide door was perfect. However, when you mount the header and rail above the existing trim on the door it requires that several inches of material be added to the length of the standard door in order to make it work. Or you have to have a custom door built which obviously adds more money to the project.
    Another question I had that wasn't addressed very well by the instructions or the template was how high does the rail need to be from the floor which means you have to figure out how high above the door do the wheels need to be mounted. So I sort of eased my way through this process by mounting the header where I knew I needed to mount it and then securing the wheels to the door where I figured they needed to go and used the template as a reference. Then I could put the door in place and make a pretty good guess at where the rail needed to be mounted. I first mounted the header board to the wall. Next mounted the left side of the rail to the header board then swung it up to it's position on the right side and drilled a hole for that bolt, being careful to make sure that I mounted the rail level. The hole in the rail on the right side was a little more of a slot than a hole, so it can be moved up or down a little bit to fine tune the placement of the rail.
    With the rail in place and secured, the door with the rollers attached can be set on the rail and you're ready for final steps on installation. That involves putting some hardware in place that mounts to the end of each side of the rail and locks in place to keep the door on the rail. There are also a couple of small cushions that are screwed into the top of the door and keep the door from bouncing off the rail if it is slammed into the stop hardware on either end of the rail.
    Now, why does our door drift about a foot from left to right when it is in the closed position. The rail is level. The wheels are secured to the door. Some of you may have a better explanation than me about this but my first thought was, "oh great, this thing is going to be a pain to keep adjusted." The fact that the door only opened about a foot led me to conclude there must be a slight dip in the rail through this area. It's possible that if the door were heavier, that might help with some of this. But in the end, after talking to the homeowners, this is what we came up with. First, this is the bathroom door that primarily needs to be either open or closed. Since the bathroom is completely remodeled, it's most likely that the door will be left open except for when is in use. So the fact that the door tends to want to slide to the right or in the open position is not necessarily a bad thing. We just need for to stay closed when it needs to be closed. After some thought we came up with this solution which works great. I took a couple of magnets and embed them in blocks that were then mounted on the backside of the door and up against the trim on the right side of the doorjamb. So when the door gets near to the closed position the magnets take over and draw together and in so doing, keep the door closed. Plus the magnets are really never seen. With the door guides mounted to the floor, the magnets have no chance to do anything except be drawn to each other when the door is closed. We need to come up with a sliding bolt type lock for inside the bathroom since this is a bathroom door. But that's an easy fix.

    The rail may be set up like that on purpose. If you flip it upside down it would always remain open or closed as opposed to drifting to the middle. The middle would be high rather than low. Would recommend checking the rail to see if it’s straight

    We had the same problem. Take a grinding wheel to put a groove at the top of the rail for the wheel to sit in. My carpenter did it on both ends of the rail so it would stay in the full open or full closed position. No more phantom rolling.

      That was one of those 'necessity mother of invention' things! The ultimate problem was that the door was too lightweight for the hardware when the air drafted through the doorway so that's what caused it to drift open. It’s funny you bring that up because I honestly don’t remember having a good reason for hanging the rail from one end and swinging it up! That was my first barn door install. I think now, since I use a laser, I mark the center point of the headerboard and rail and drill my first hole in that area which creates sort of an airplane propeller effect! Not sure it matters as long as it works! Good luck and thanks for watching, Just Looking!

    Nice fit. My tuppence worth on the sliding door is a slight dip in the track. Solution flip the track over then the door will slide open or closed depending if it is over the rise in the middle. I plan on fitting two sliding doors soon and was thinking of getting the track bent slightly in the middle (only about 1/8th to 1/4 over 6ft6) so door self closes or self opens

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  4 роки тому +1

      That's possible, 1988dgs. One thing we figured out was that we had a pretty good draft from the air conditioner vent in the bathroom coming through the opening. The wheel hardware was very smooth and it ultimately was the air that was moving the door, since it only opened about a foot. Anyway, the magnets worked great! Good luck with your project!

    so with this type of door you can leave all the wood trim around the original door? I got the idea yesterday to use this type of door from my kitchen to my small laundry room that will eliminate the space an open door takes up inside the small laundry room. Glad you showed it can be done with a colonial door, which is what we have around the rest of the house.

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  7 років тому

      Yes, the new door cleared the door trim by about 3/4" after installation. I used a standard hollow core colonial door from Lowes... very inexpensive. I needed to add about 3" overall height to the door so I split the difference and added 1 1/2" to top and bottom of door. Cut pieces from a 2x4. Other dimensions that might be helpful. I used a 36" door to cover the 32" opening which worked out just right for a bathroom door. Most expensive part was the hardware which was about $140 I think, also from Lowes. Good luck, sound like a good idea!

    That dip in the rail was at the center where it is weakest and thus bends slightly down. I would drill a hole at the center and attached it to the wall with a screw.
    But the solution of having positive stops is better. Just put something slim on the rail that the rolls can roll over but takes a bit of conscious effort to do. One for the closed position and one for the open position.

      Thanks Mark. I think what we ultimately determined was that we had a very lightweight door and hyperactive wheels on our hardware along with a pretty good draft from the air conditioner vent in the bathroom that moved the door open about a foot. But the magnets turned out to be a solution that everyone was happy with. Thanks for your comment.

    For anybody not doing a 1990s style bathroom like this and wanting a barn door, it is far better to simply build a door than to buy one and scab on to it especially if the door is textured because in person you will see it. Also hanging the rail absolutely level is incredibly important and cheaper manufactured rails can sag and have insufficient hardware so avoid those. If you like the door to stop in a particular place the way to do that is to simply take a rounded file and put a small detent at the location of the rollers where you would like the door to stop.

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  3 роки тому +1

      Good suggestions, Daniel. The door we used was an exact match to the original door package for the house so the owners preferred this approach. I recently did another video where we built the door out of solid alder hardwood with stain and finish. No doubt that is also a great way to go.

    I had the same “dip” on a project and I just flipped the track over so the dip was UP. Door full open or full closed, and no drift. I thought it was a manufacturing defect or just a bent track and adjusted accordingly.

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  4 роки тому

      I never really thought about trying that, Sam! The wheels were so smooth for this brand of hardware, it seemed like they came off roller blades or something. The lightweight door and a little A/C draft through this door opening were enough to cause it to drift about a foot but the magnets actually worked out well. I'll keep your suggestion in mind for the future! The last barn door hardware I installed had wheels that seemed to have a little more friction built into them so the drift issue never was a problem. Have one more to do in a few weeks so we'll see how it goes. Thanks for your comment and for watching!

      Yes, Kmemu, the barn doors can be a good option for bathrooms. You just need to realize that you do give up some privacy because they do not seal the bathroom completely closed like a regular door does. So, they work better in areas like a master bedroom bathroom where they are not near main living space.

    Usually barn doors are heavy. Using the hollow door probably didn’t have the weight to keep closed. Did you do anything for sound? The gaps on the side would let noise through. Could be annoying if one is sleeping while their significant other is showering, getting ready in the morning.

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  5 років тому +1

      Yes, we determined that it was probably air flow from an A/C vent that was causing the door to drift. It only moved about a foot. A heavier door would have eliminated that. The funny thing about your other comments is that this was a master bedroom and the original construction included a double sided fireplace in the wall to the right of this barn door. We took that out as a part of the bathroom remodel. So the homeowners had to be aware that if they were using the tub they could be seen from the hall outside the bedroom door. They had put a curtain on the fireplace glass inside the bathroom. So, to them, this change and the barn door gave them great privacy compared to before when the fireplace was still there. I guess privacy depends on what we are comparing it to! Thanks for the comment!

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  5 років тому +1

      Yeah, I think if you use a solid core door and try to minimize the gap between the barn door and the door jamb trim, that's probably the best you can do to help eliminate noise. Will not work as well as a hinged door, but may be enough for you once you are used to it. The barn door is certainly an updated look. Good luck with it!

    All of these type doors, whether pocket door, barn door, or shower door (barn/serenity style) have the same concept to keep the door from moving on its own. The wheels, or brackets in older styles, can be adjusted because level, isn't always level. On the barn styles, you'll either need an allenhead or T25 bit to loosen the center screw on the wheel itself, then turn the wheel (like in this case, left wheel needs to be lowered) then tighten back. You may also need a smaller allenhead for the pin-hole, to keep fittings in place as you turn wheel, otherwise when you tighten down, the plastic adjuster will move and you'll lose your adjustment when you tighten down). If this isn't an option, adjust the header. Magnets don't hold up well over time, esp a door that's used often. I can't tell you how many times I've had to replace or alternatively fix a magnet issue.

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  Рік тому +1

      I never considered trying to adjust the tension on the wheels, Sussy, so thanks for that suggestion. These wheels were definitely free wheeling! We had a draft from an evaporative cooler inside the bathroom that was moving the door open by about a foot. The magnets have worked well and been in use for about five years now. The homeowners are friends that I would have heard from if there were issues with the magnets. Appreciate your comments and thanks for watching!

      @RustyDobbs  5 років тому

      Thanks, Justin! You pretty much nailed it. There was an A/C vent in the bathroom that was creating a draft through the opening. Was looking for something else... looks like you sort out problems pretty good on the go. Installed the barn door, came out great. But did not anticipate the huge gap on both sides... and it is for a bathroom. Ever come across trying to close the gap and make it more private?

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  6 років тому

      Yeah, Fred, the dimensions of the the barn door hardware drive a lot of what you encounter with gaps after installation. You can go to a thinner header board to move the door closer to the door trim and even use a thicker door trim. In this case, we had a 36" door covering a 32" door opening. The funny thing about this job was that before the remodel, there was a double sided fireplace to the right of the door opening and the tub was directly on the other side of the fireplace. So that added a whole other meaning to lack of privacy! The owners were delighted with the amount of privacy they felt they had after remodel! I guess it's all a matter of perspective. This was also a master bath so the bathroom itself was very separate from the rest of the house. Thanks for the comment!

    When you first hung the door on the rail you were missing the middle bolts. Did you take the door off again before putting those middle bolts in? If not you may have bolted the rail down while it was sagging ever so slightly in the middle from the weight.

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  6 років тому

      I hear your reasoning, Scary Fast. I'm not sure it would apply here because the door was actually a hollow core door that was very lightweight. In fact, we ultimately decided that reason the door moved was because the air flow from the air conditioning was actually pushing the door because it was so light. I think a solid core door would have put enough downward force on the barn door wheels, that the door may have stayed put. Thanks for the comment!

  • @Seaton007
