I reused the door and used a retro fit pocket door handle. I used a kit for the pocket door frame and slides. For the price, you may as well use the kit. They have everything you need and work pretty well. Some kits come in adjustable sizes, mine was made for the size of my door.Since I reused the door, I had to install a retrofit pocket door handle. This door has a lock on it that was installed backwards. I have a young child that we want to keep out of there, so this worked out well.

“My name’s Brent and we’re gonna install a pocket door” Immediately starts installing pocket door. This is exactly how a how-to video should be!
But, we need to hear about his earliest fondest childhood memories of opening a pocket door at his grandmother's home and all his Hopes and dreams of one day owning a pocket door because it reminds him of his dead grandmother.
@@jmad318 I’m also pretty disappointed he didn’t scream REMeMBEr TO HIT THAT SUBSCRIBE BUtTON AND SMASh THe LIKE!!!!¡!! before he even started. I usually like my simple how-to videos to start with a headache

Wow. Love this. To the point video.
This was about as "how to" as watching my neighbor do it while wearing head phones and ignoring me, but on fast forward, so even less useful.
Installed a pocket door a few years back - they’re great! After a few weeks, my spouse complained it wasn’t working...right after they hung art on the wall next to the doorway. Turns out they nailed through the drywall and into the opened door locking it into place. 😂
It happens. I've put some baseboard on not knowing there is a pocket door and pinned the door open.
I mean the door disappears into the wall... Who could've guessed that?
Neither of us had a lot of experience with pocket doors so it never occurred to them. I was so focused on trying to get a good grip that little flip handle, I hadn’t even noticed the newly hung artwork and it never occurred to me “decor” could disable a door like that! We had a good laugh about it.
Always wanted to do a pocket door but was intimidated. You are making this possible by sharing your great knowledge.
I’m still intimidated 🤷🏻♂️
Did you wind up destroying your wall yet? You have no clue what you are doing.
@@Bwal4813 Did ya do it yet? C’mon don’t over think it..just do it!
I did it Love how it turned out, no more annoying door getting caught on my shower rug. It really isn’t that difficult once you start-You can do it 💪🏼
Pocket doors so useful as bathroom doors, Pantry doors, laundry/washing machine closet doors. In any residence where space is limited and storage space is needed.
October 2023, this is exactly what I'm looking for...
Thank youuuuuuu
A craftsman at work with those latches
I need a pocket door for my craft room... great video ... learned some new skills!
Easy and not too much drama as other videos thanks man you rock ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼
Thanks!
Your vid helped alot. I changed two things. I made a guide and cut a notch in the bottom of the door to keep it from seating side to side. I also removed the hard rubber bumper and put 3/4inch foam from top to bottom as a stopper. The door does not slam into the frame and the guide kees my paint looking good. Even the kids can't mess it up.
great tips
i had a pocket door in my old house. i dont have one now. i wish i did. i liked it.
thanks for the heart
“This is not an electrical how to video” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 “call an electrician” I went back to read it like 4 times just to laugh. Awesome video. Thanks 😊
Love this to the point video.
I pulled out the bumper and put in several squares of medium density foam used for ac insulation. Top to bottom. Softens the hit when opening the door. Useful if you have kids. Also made a t shaped guide for the bottom of the door as a center guide. Routed a notch into the bottom center of the door for the t glide notch into. No waver back and forth when opening and closing and illuminates the need for external guides that will mess up your paint.
Great tip!
What material did you use for the t? Aluminum?
@@krehbein you can buy plastic Ts. Used for barn doors, sliding closet doors
@@krehbein a small block of pine.. no knots. Cut a groove down the center. Epoxied a piece of aluminum. And glued to the floor
@@krehbein FYI... It has to fit perfect between the framing boards. Absolutely no wiggle between i glued to the framing boards and epoxied to the floor so it say just inside the pocket. Took me most of a day to assemble paint and fix it in. Was a pain but worth it
Good clean work . 💯👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video and instructions. You seem like a very knowledgeable down to earth guy. U know how to make people feel capable of the task. First video of yours I have watched and I am impressed. Maybe my wife gets her pocket door now

I hope not lol

How did UA-cam know I was wanting this? I didn't even know it was called a pocket door.
Creepy!

Really made it look easy
It's not too bad of a job
Great job! Thanks!
Going to pick up this same product. Replacing an original pocket door.
Super nice video! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great job 👍🇨🇦
Awesome I've been thinking too do this for our laundry room, awesome to get an idea how to do so.
They are great for rooms where the door is usually open. I try to avoid them on busy doorways like bathrooms.
@@BrentDarlington definitely, our laundry room door is always open in the summer & closed in the winter. I just did a bunch of renovations recently that were long overdue, and thought I should do this finally as well. Definitely a great guide, new subscriber as I enjoy watching this sort of stuff and doing my own home renovations.
@@dnapokemon123 OK, good luck, let me know if you have any questions!
Very nice 👍...... Ya hacia falta un video asi... Very good video.
I want to put a pocket door on each end of my master bathroom.
Sounds like fun. I only like to use them for doors that don't get used often and are usually open.
Fun fact: The bumper can be attached to the door (which is removable). No need to reach in because you forgot. Works for old workout stoppers as well.
Yup, Have a door I need to it to this week
@@BrentDarlington Me too. Stupid mistake of posting this while installing a door (which I closed up without it's stupid bumper). Duh!
If you need to slightly shim the door to make it come out flush with the finish trim, you can place that shim right underneath the bumper on the backside of the door, as well.
Excellent 😎
Awesome 👌
Excellent great job thank you.
Love this video!
Super efficient!
IMO, this type of door should be used more often. Space saver.
Thanks!
Thank you for this awesome video!
Glad you liked it!
Just subbed! Killer videos man. Congrats on hitting 1 mil views on this. I've got almost 40k subs and haven't hit 1 mil on a single vidya yet. hats off to ya!
Thanks! I hate pocket doors but figured it would make a good video
Finally getting ready to convert existing bathroom door and totally appreciate this as well as the product list. Every contractor in the past said: nope, cannot re-use old door + nope, cannot re-use old knob hole -- need to cover that with a metal plate, then make a new hole.
THANK YOU for proving them wrong and now I can get what I want!
Glad I could help, best of luck with the project. Let me know if you have any questions
The easiest video so far
Great video, enjoyed it!
Thanks!
Excellent bro 👍
Thanks!
Welp. Looks like I’m installing a barn door. Lol
Excellent work!👑👍🥇
Thank you! Cheers!
Every pocket door should be installed directly to the dumpster.
They have their place. I only like them if they are rarely used.
I put alot of them in you did a nice job
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for your video! You did it perfectly!🎉
Thanks
Thanks for the detailed video with zero fluff. Dumb question but how do you lock it? Did you need to get a pull handle to have something to grab onto when the door is inside the wall?
Thanks. There is about 1000 comments asking the same thing lol. I little hook pops up as you close the latch.
thanks for the video brother
Great job man. Fantastic idea
Thanks!
The way you just can rip out studs, it is a testament to how flimsy the houses in the US are made.
Thanks. Great video. Wish me luck. starting on the week end
Good luck!
Awesome work ive also made one but differently...i like your way because its better
Lol, Thanks!

Great video!
That is easy an $2,750-3,500 job (cost of the door excluded) at labor and materials-demo, framing reconfiguration, install, drywall, and finish work. Keep up the great work 👍🏻
Great video! Thanks for sharing! Subscribed!
Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions
I can’t do this without my wife watching every step just to point out “DID YOU DO THAT LIKE THE VIDEO”.
Lol, I'm sorry!
When you frame a header i recommend nailing your header blocks first, then nail the header to your king stud/cripple so you face nail, then stand it up as 1. Face nailing beats toe nailing. Great job on your install...looks good from my house lol🤣
@Chris Jamieson im a 20 year journeyman jackass
@Chris Jamieson you can make 2x4 headers non load bearing where are you from?
@Chris Jamieson a nailer is simple backing, i was union so i got an education son
@Chris Jamieson im going to have fun with you, i am the guy who told guys like you what to do and how to do it. Thats why union carpenters are always better.
@Chris Jamieson 5 years of trade school with 20 plus years in the field would prove your statement wrong.
Sweet
Buen vídeo 👌 gracias.
Gracias
You cut really close to those wires your really lucky
Great video only 1 question????? How dose it work with a deadbolt lock and sliding door going same direction? How is it gonna lock? is it something that I didn't know... anybody ?
It's not a dead bolt. It's made for pocket doors.
Awesome. Just for a visiting family member to try and open it like a normal door and rip it out.
what kind of family members do you have?
I would love to do this for my downstairs living room! My boyfriend and I are trying to make a gamer hang out room but make it futuristic like, so sliding pocket door is a great idea! I have a question though, I am new to all these remodels etc and was curious if anyone knows if you need to first obtain a permit to do this type of project or if you could just do it without obtaining one? I know usually you need permits for stuff that involves doing remodeling or renovations that might involve moving electrical or plumbing sorts but was just curious any help is appreciated! great video and thank you!
It will depend on the building department in your city. Where I love, as long as it's not a load bearing wall, you can do it without a permit. If you don't know if it's a load bearing wall, you may need to speak to a structural engineer or call the city building department and ask them what they would recommend.
Very cool 😎😎😎
Thanks
That's what I'm talking aboot!
How does that lock actually secure the door? I must have missed something.
Hook pops out when it's turned into the hole
Me encantó esa idea genial gracias x compartir tanto conocimiento ❤
Gracias por ver mi vídeo
holy shit what a pro
I've been trying to find a "two door to single door conversion" all over but all I can find is single to french door conversions.. this is as close as I can get.
Very nice job. The job it's self is very well done. Unfortunately also daft. There is a cat litter box in there, yes it makes more space in the utility room. But if the door slides shut the cat will be trapped inside ( not that bad) or outside ( messy )
The door usually stays open, so it clears up space in the room
He's quick
get r done
That’s awesome! Only problem is that lock won’t work, because the door goes straight back. You’ll need a lock that throws up with a thumb turn. Overall great video though 💯👍🏼
It's a pocket door lock. It works. Hooks in.
Why didn't you make the door split into 2 so you didn't have to move the frame to one side? Could have added actuators so it opened by a button also and been futuristic haha
Thy great video good skills
Appreciate it
Great job telling people to call an electrician! Wish more people would put that kind of intermission in their work! Too many electrical mistakes being shown here on UA-cam.
I see fire hazards all the time when I do remodels. Best to leave electrical to the pros
Basic electrical is idiot proof. Hell, I wired a sub panel in my garage so I could run my 60 gallon air compressor and welder in the garage. The electrical inspector was surprised how neat, tidy, and correct my work was. Electrical is easy if you pay attention and follow the NEC!
@@cm1133 sometimes CYA is the best policy
@@cm1133 In MD it's illegal to do your own electrical work. I still do lights, fans, and outlets though. I don't mess with breaker boxes or new lines though. I'm sure I can do it, but an electrician will be better at it since they do it more than I do.
@@T1Oracle electricity is pretty much idiot proof these days. Just get a electrical permit. Do the work yourself and save a fortune. Then, have the electrical inspector sign off on it.
Awesome video! Did you use the old door jamb or was this a diy kit you can buy with everything you’ll need? What if the doorway and the jamb are load bearing?
I used a kit for the jambs. If it's load bearing, call a structural engineer or do a barn door style sliding door.
Great video, where did you buy the pocket door kit?
This one is from Lowes in Canada but all the reno stores have similar ones available
Thanks
Welcome
tahnsk really helped
Thanks
On the end why didn’t you use a latch lock like those used on patio sliding doors?
Great music
Awesome video. What size door and pocket door frame you used?
I want to do the same to my pantry door. One question I have is, my door opening is 24”, should I go with a 24” pocket door frame or can I go a bit longer like a 28” pocket door frame. It’s hard to find a 24” anywhere in stock. Plus with the 28” pocket door frame I can slide the entire door into the frame, making it easier for reaching in and out the pantry.
*Will Subscribe soon as I get a response
Thx 🙏🏻
That one is a 32". That's building code here for laundry rooms. If you have enough room in the wall to fit a 28" then bigger is usually better. Yes, 24" would be tough to find since they aren't common but should be able to order one or get a pocket door kit that is adjustable to the size you need. You can also just get the hardware and frame the walls in with some 1x3" or steel stud.
That's fucking awesome!!!! This is exactly what I visioned for my new laundry room... don't think I can't build it though. I'm doing a lot of work but this may be to much.
They aren't too bad if you use the kits. Make sure everything is working well before you close it in with drywall and you should be good.
Nice job Brent, ... I have to quote the exact project, (no electrical) curious, how many days do you think you spent on this project from demo to finish trim & paint? Thanks'
Probably 3 or 4 days with dry times for drywall coats and paint. First day is busy but after that a lot of waiting. Hopefully I have another job close by. Hit it in the morning for a few day. I usually do bigger jobs and this would just be part of it.
Will this style door also muffle room sound like a traditional door.
I would like a sliding type door or barn door but my biggest gripe is you can still hear all the sound because there’s no seal on the door, for both sides.
It’s for my laundry space which is why it’s so important
It's better than a barn door but not as good as a regular door. The have interior doors that are filled with insulation for sound. Sometimes call "safe n sound" doors which would help
Great video! Always wondered how those locks actually latched?
The latch has a built in hook. I have a FAQ video that shows how it works
@@BrentDarlington cool I will check it out thanks!!
what guides did you use for the pocket door at 3:51 ??
I can't find the ones I want (prefering black)
I've never seen them in any other colour than white. Maybe spray paint them with some paint made for plastic. It will probably wear off but only on the inside where you won't see it.
I need some help on ideas on a slim door knob. I have a place, that goes to my downstairs, that needs a very low profile door knob. It's not a pocket door but I was thinking I could use that hardware on my regular door. I need the same turning mechanism on both sides so if someone closes the door I wont get stuck in the basement. I have never used pocket door hardware before, so can i put two of the handle sides on both sides of the door. Thanks so much. I know it's a strang question to be asking. I would appreciate your help
Maybe? You'd have 2 buy 2 set and try to put them together or just use a flat head screwdriver to open the one side. Maybe a deadbolt and leave the key in your side? Hmm tough one haha
I absolutely Abhor pocket doors and would LOVE to get rid of all of mine!
Thanks for sharing!
Looking to do a hideaway door about how much approx did this cost? Ballpark. I will also need electrical switches moved as well. Thank you.
It's going to depend where you live. Best to call a couple contractors and get some estimates
Id love abstep by step real time narration version.
Also any ideas/tips /advice on how to do this w my indoor/outdoor front door?!
Of course i fould buy a whole new sliding door and all but w brokeness a thing for now i thot if i just knew how to add in the slidey parts?! And put this big heavy metal door on it instead & have it running inside the wall of the house?! Basically?
You will need a door system made for exterior and I'm not sure one exists that isn't just a patio door made of glass
Grate job
1 think where you get the door knob??
They are available at most hardware stores or online, not too hard to find usually
Does the drywall have to line up with the pocket door trim?
I don't understand your question. The trim or the jamb?
