    Great video full of good advice and it's great to see someone who uses their hands in a video. In the real world, working with gloves and goggles makes it impossible to see or feel whats going on around you. I've cut myself a million times but the closes I ever came to loosing my life was with a chain saw, when I cut through a cable I didn't see with goggles on, as they restricted my view south of the lens line where it fixes around the nose.

    I think the barn doors are great if you have pets....because many pets cannot open a standard door or turn a door knob if they need to get in or out in an emergency...with barn doors they can take their paw pads and push...pull...or slide the door open. I also like them because they take up less space when open...also folding doors are really good too.

    I think you are my new hero. I'm scared to death of power tools, but I fancy myself handy. I'd like to remove a hinged bedroom door because the room is small and the swing into the room obtrusive; I'm considering a barn door but it'd have to track in the hallway, not in the bedroom, and I wonder about that view from the bedroom looking out when closed. Is it weird? People use these generally for closets and pantries or rooms that don't often get used; this bedroom is used daily. What of the view from inside your bathroom? Is it weird? I'd need a handle on the inside to get out too.

    I've scanned and briefly watched alot of "professional" videos on this subject and it's been quite frustrating because they're long and complicated. Yours is the first that is UNprofessional (lol) and gets right to the point. I'm going to put the track up now! Thanks :). P.S. The ONLY thing that I would have loved to see is how your door matched up with the trim at the bottom to see if it rolled without obstruction. I noticed that the door in the video had to stop at the light switch so I'm curious to see if trim was the same at the bottom and had to be removed. I have trim and I'm not sure if it has to be removed OR if the door has to be raised to clear it.

    • @TheUnprofessional

      Thanks! It'll be close, but it's totally possible if you lower your frame. My ceiling is 90 inches and I have 5 inches left over between the very top of the hardware and the ceiling (so in total, my setup requires 85 inches of space). You could also look for hardware that takes up even less space. Let me know how it turns out!

      We don’t actually because it’s my son’s bathroom and he is young. But you can put a hook and eye lock on. They also make sliding door locks. I think Amazon sells them. We’ll put one on in a few years I’m sure. Thanks for watching!

      Not yet. My kids are still young so we don’t want one. I’m a few years we’ll figure something out.

      I got the hardware on Amazon. Despite being on the cheap side, it has held up extremely well. There is a link to it on my blog post here theunprofessional.com/make-any-door-a-barn-door/

    Can you lock the door since it does not fit into the door frame?

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  5 років тому +5

      We didn’t put a lock on ours, but you can add a hook and eye lock, which is what I’d do if privacy was a concern. Amazon also has more sophisticated locks specifically for barn doors.

    Does the door still hit the light switch? That is what I wondered about while you were getting ready to do it.
    I wonder about what kind of latch you would put on the inside to keep people from walking in.It is still an improvement and solved your problem.

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  4 роки тому

      Great question! The door comes right to the edge of the light switch. Originally I thought I would need to move it, but it worked out so the door just barely misses it.

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  4 роки тому

      I would use a hook and eye latch. There are nicer locks made specifically for barn doors available on Amazon if you want something nicer.

    Where did you get the door you use and where did you purchase it? I am needing a similar door, as I have the same type of louvered doors in my bedroom. Love the look! Thanks!

      I believe I ordered it from Overstock.com. I looked everywhere for my delivery email but can’t find it. If you search louvered door on overstock or Joss and Main, you’ll find something very similar. Thanks for watching!

    Love the outcome but a little lost since you said you were going to use the door you had. So the reason in removing the original gram and bringing the header down was to fit the actual door size or a new door in another size. Can I use my 24X80 door following this video. Sorry a newbie to all this. Thank you

      Oops meant frame

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  Рік тому

      Yes you can definitely use your original door as long as you bring all sides of the frame in a little so that it fully covers the opening. The only situation that I might not recommend it is if it’s a really small door to begin with. Good luck!

    Awesome tutorial! Thank you. Confused why other installations videos on YT show the requirement to remove the trim (but then don't show like you did how to take it all off - so thank you). I want THAT track if you don't -need- to remove the trim. haha
    Anyway, thanks for a brilliant video!!!!

    Would be nice to add a latch on the inside to prevent the door from sliding while in use, ie a lock.

    How close to the corner does the track go? I would like to put a barn door on the entryway of our hallway, but it is a corner.

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  2 роки тому +1

      It’s about 4 inches from the corner, which is actually a perpendicular doorframe. I think you’ll be fine as long as the door stops just before the corner. Even a half inch would be enough in my opinion. Good luck!

    Your installation is amazing, i have encountered the problem is the balance when i install, is there any simple tactics that the barn door can be vertical stand without leaning inwards.

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  5 років тому

      Thanks! The door is larger than the opening and the rail is at 90 degrees, so in my case, it really can't lean inwards.

    When open does it clear the entire door opening?

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  2 роки тому

      I have the stopper set so that the door goes exactly to the edge of the jam, so yes, it clears the opening but not the casing. I could set it to open further but there is a light switch on the other side.

    First time to your channel, I was looking for something like this to change a closet door which is very uncomfortable to open. Thank you so much Lara for sharing this. My question is , I don't want to change the whole frame, do you think I can put an extension on the bottom of the door since it's going to be an open gap, an anyway I'm going to be painting the door as well? Or this doesn't work? Also, Which exactly was the barn door kit you used for the project?

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  3 роки тому +1

      I think it could work if you incorporated trim pieces or something to mask the added portion.

      What did you do about the door knob
      I didn't see it there when you hung the door up.
      Did you fill it in or what???

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  3 роки тому

      The door I used didn’t have a door knob. I probably would figure out a way to add trim if I wanted to cover a hole. Or I’d attach a recessed handle. That would be the most functional solution I think. Great question!

    So I have almost the exact same set up… but the left side has barely any space and would only allow the door to slide open 18 inches. So I had a bifold barn door custom made from a shop who specializes in sliding barn doors. My contractors are nervous it’s going to have a weight balance issue when the bi fold is open and angled out, causing it to tip down.The hardware is for a bifold barn door and weight is within range - the track is made to hold 2 separate bi folds that come together. I’m doing 1. Any suggestions to reinforce? Along the bottom? There is one pivot plate in the corner.

    • @TheUnprofessional
      @TheUnprofessional  2 роки тому

      Interesting solution! I’m so curious to hear how it turns out. My thoughts are to put up a really sturdy header and make sure the tracks are attached really well. I understand the contractor concern because even though the weight works with the hardware, the stress on the tracks will be much higher when the door is folded. You could try a small castor on the pivot point. Good luck and send me a photo when it’s done.
