Flevopolder - The Biggest Artificial Island -

- It's by far the biggest man made island in the world: The Flevopolder in the Netherlands. You may have heard of how the Dutch have basically "built" their own country; the Flevopolder is only one piece of evidence of that.
Some things were simplified in this video to keep it nice and succinct. The closing of the Zuiderzee brought along with it many protests, especially form fishing villages along the coast of the inland sea. However, to this day, you'll be able to find traces of this history in those villages - it's being kept alive.
Another thing I chose not to dive too deep into was the building of the Amsteldiepdam, which came even before the Wieringermeerpolder. It just wasn't such a good story to open with, really. That's why I relegated it to a mention on the maps, instead.
There were many - many - maps made for the Markerwaard. Eventually the economic benefits didn't outweigh the costs of building. However, a dam between Lelystad and Enkhuizen was constructed, effectively cutting the IJsselmeer in two, making one half the Markermeer. That lake has seen some more development recently, with the construction of the Marker Wadden.
And finally: Sorry for the somewhat wonky audio quality, I had the mic a bit too close to my big mouth. Still learning.

Just a small nitpick: the Noordoostpolder is part of the province of Flevoland too, of course, so it's not JUST the island. My grandad helped create it (the Noordoostpolder) so I may be overly sensitive #huplelylijn
Ha yes I know, slight oversimplification in the script, but your'e right of course. Lots of interesting stories about the NO-polder, not just the one about the drying land. But for this video I mainly focused on the Flevopolder.
Wow! This is a great video! I love how maps are integrated into the video, it makes visuals really impressive and easy to understand.
Thank you Anna! I'm very glad you're saying that. 😊
I have a huge admiration for The Netherlands and this is one of the most outstanding achievements of Dutch people
It's one of the greatest _human_ achievements.
Came over from the r/imaginarymaps post and had to stop in and say this is great content! Looking forward to seeing more
Thank you Will! Welcome aboard! New videos are being worked on 😊

Awesome, thank you for the sub! :D
Really nice video again especially the map animations! Do you use Google Earth Studio?
Thank you very much. Yes I do! It's a great tool, much better than the old Google Earth app.
awesome work man. I actually learned something!
I'm glas you did mate ☺️ that's what it's for! 😉
Great Video!
Note that the dike which we know as 'Oostervaardersdijk' is in fact the outer dike of the proposed Markerwaard. You can clearly see how it should be near Lelystad-haven, the Zuidersluis near Almere and the Pampushaven. So the canal that should be between the Flevopolder and the Markerwaard is now part of the Flevopolder.
Oh that's an interesting story - I had to look that up. That's really odd, why did they build it that way? I can't think of why they would construct it in such a way.

Imagine time travelled on Flevopolder and spawned in the middle of the sea
So Underrated! Nice Work, I Love the Animation, I am Subscribed Now
Thank you very much! And thank you for the sub.
Great video. You deserve more subscribers.
Thank you very much! New videos are in the works
I grew up in the city of Lelystad! Fun to see my own little island mentioned.
I just visited the previous Island of Urk (now a town in Flevoland). The story of Flevoland is so interesting!
We should have kept it an island
So basically even if the ice caps melt and world is consumed by water we’ll be fine. Noted
it is the largest polder but it is also where there are the most wind turbines in the country
My house is on the fake Island I love it
Hopefully the house is real! 😉
What an awesome Video
Hello everyone, How much did it cost to build the Flavopolder? Adjusting inflation?
good question, I wanna know as well.
I found one online reply with an expired link for reference. the answer said "1.9 billion Dutch Guilders".
"adjust for inflation" XD diy
Id use the GDP of 1950-1968 as a measure, 'coz when they started building, Holland wasn't as rich as we are now. in fact, post war food rationing was still a thing when they started building the Flevopolder.
The North Sea was once a natural habitat too. But because of climate change below sea level now, When all the ice melting on the poles sea level will rise another 7 meters. Hello Florida and New York.
One Island was finished in the 42? During WWII?
yes, life did mostly continue quite normally in '40, '41 etc. only at the end of the war thinks became more grim. they also had several of the famous Elfstedentochten (200 km ice skating race) during the war. the people had no idea about atrocities like the holocaust for most of the war time . and the Germans had no reason to stop civil engineering projects unless they intervened with military ones
The Germans were actually quite interested in what was going on and watched the project closely to learn about the process
Polders are not islands.
Also, that airport was made by the Dutch..
1:30 not so fast! :p Im replaying on 1/4 speed.
edit ~ oh I see the wiki page shows all the same projections
