- The ocean has been friend and foe for as The Netherlands exist. The Dutch have long used their ingenuity to manage the water, but a perfect storm in 1916 prompted them to embark on the most ambitious project to date: to reclaim the Zuider Sea.

The flood in 1953 hit England too, Canvey Island was swamped that is reclaimed land too. The Dutch engineers came over and got it done very quickly.
During the floods the RAF flew over to The Netherlands to rescue people trapped in the flooded areas.

Makes me think of the Dutch Pontonniers of France Empire under General Éblé, they thrown themselves in the frozen water in Russia to build a bridge for the Grande Armée in a few hours, only 6 of them made it, both courageous and ingenious they were.
The 1953 floods in England washed away some of the Norfolk coastline. I recall a village called Sea Palling being affected. Also there was a ship off Cornwall called the Flying Enterprise that went down in rough seas.

I used to live in the Netherlands and now I live in Lowestoft. We built the biggest sea defence systems of the world in the Netherlands and here in Lowestoft they replaced the park benches. Was scared shitless the first time we had a proper storm here 9 years ago, water was halve way up the highstreet and not far away from my house.
My father led the construction of the first houses of Lelystad. I still remember his stories about the difficulty building in the muddy conditions. During the week, he needed to stay in a hotel just to the south of Flevoland, and then drive the length of the dike to the construction site every day.

Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them).
Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.
Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).
Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning!
Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.
It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them.

I seem to remember from my trip to a visitor centre on Flevo polder somewhere (this was 40 years ago so please forgive any in accuracies 😁) that they actually got workers over from the UK who had been involved in reclaiming land in East Anglia. So the Dutch created the Netherlands, with a little help from us Brits 👍
EDIT: It is of course entirely possible that I've got this the wrong way round, and that the Dutch came over here and helped to create Easy Anglia. In which case, thanks for that, but you needn't have bothered 🤣
Nice saying but you need to look at the history of the Netherlands before the Dutch arrived.
My father traveled through flevoland in his youth when the land was still very young.
He remembered it feeling "off" and very eerie. Days later it struck him why: there were no trees yet. Just grass and a perfect horizon.
When I drive through Flevoland I can still see that the land is young. I miss the oak trees that surround my home and were saplings when the flood hit.
I remember that too! The eerie feeling, everything was swampy, driving on a lonely road surrounded by water and these plugs of reeds/grass and no trees! I've always had dreams of drowning maybe it stems from that time 😅

Really interesting. I'm English and heard the word "polder" in some geography lesson when I was about 9 but the teacher was boring, and The Netherlands could have been on the moon. I had no idea the land reclamation was this impressive. Genuine admiration for the Dutch engineering and people.
This short documentary is excellent. • I've spent much time in the Netherlands since the mid-'60s. I wish I'd known what was covered in this video back then. Our Dutch family friends there are virtually like blood family to us. A large percentage of the Netherlands speak English. However, the Dutch narrator of this video speaks English better than most people I know whose native language is English. All-in-all, very impressive!!
I live in a city where tourists come by the thousands. I've met young Dutch backpackers who told me they had English and several European languages. Yeah, I know the joke that it's bc no one can speak Dutch, but it's impressive.

I am concerned how sea-level rise will effect them. I dearly hope they have plans for that as well.
@@occamsrazor5376 No one but me seems to believe the Sea Level Rise will take place soon, but there are marine sediments studies indicating this happened in the past, rise was quite sudden, and took place in European Winter, meaning water came from Antarctica.
Simply, their land will drown, no escape, mininal rise would be 6 metres, also Belgium, Danemark, Florida, NYC, the pentagon, London, Paris,... they would have barely the time to save their lives, even this is not guaranteed, moving away over 6 million people is not easy.
During the Kathrina and the Waves hurricane events, some people died by thirst and hunger, it took too long for US administration having the Army there.
The East Germany has lots of land, lots of cheap vacant homes, lots of unemployement, German is the language Dutch is closer to, Hollanders better start right now going uphill there.

Land reclamation has been a major activity here in Japan since the 1960s, although for reasons other than imminent flooding. Mostly for population concerns, but the threats of tsunami also play a factor. Land reclamation projects are mostly centered around the more populated cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. Thank you for an insightful video.
Yeah, Japan is too exposed to the pacific ocean. That's a problem the Netherlands doesn't have as we're blocked from the Atlantic by Britain.
@@gert-janvanderlee5307 Yeah, but sometimes that actually is a bad thing, cause of how the islands and Scandinavia can channel in a surge straight at the Dutch coast because of geography, but on average the British Isles to take the brunt of the ocean forces.

There have been Dutch engineers in the past who went to Japan and helped the Japanese with their knowledge and skills. There are articles on that on Wikipedia.
Apparently 15% of Tokyo bay has been filled in. Unlike the Netherlands Japan has a lot of mountains to use for material.
very informative! I married an individual who had Dutch roots, and have always enjoyed touring the Netherlands. Amsterdam is a breath-taking City, and the trains are a joy to ride. The flatness of the landscape is interesting, and the tulip fields in spring are beyond belief. Interesting to learn how challenging it has been to create some of this beauty.

the Netherlands are awesome as a whole but the flat landscape gets boring after like 2 days 🤣 I don't need alpine terrain but some nice wooden hills with elevation changes of like 100m are the least what I need to enjoy my MOUNTAIN bike trips 😜 I love the Netherlands and the Dutch people for their whole attitude and approach of things though.

My one day in Amsterdam in 1961 as a 9 year old on the way to Canada did little to educate me on the nation. I learned to pronounce Zuider Zee but did not know until today that it no longer exists. What brilliance to put the unemployed to work. What tenacity to continue using shovels and men during the 2nd world war. And that explains the tulips, too. Perhaps one day I may yet see them in bloom. Excellent video.
Paar correcties;
1. De Markerwaard was niet zo klein. Het was zo groot als eigenlijk het hele Markermeer, en de Houtribdijk was de noordoostelijke dijk voor die polder. In het begin was Marken een deel ervan, later werden de randmeren zo groot dat Marken weer een eigen eiland was.
2. Emmeloord ligt niet op dezelfde locatie als het oude Emmeloord. Oud Emmeloord lag op Schokland, wat vandaag de dag nog steeds te zien is in de Noordoospolder, meer in het zuiden, tussen Ens en Nagele.
Het dorpje in het zuiden van Schokland was Ens, wat ook een nieuw dorp vernoemd kreeg. Noordoostpolder heeft wel een interessante structuur - Emmeloord is het centrum, en het plan was om kleine dorpjes eromheen te maken en er voor te zorgen dat het max ongeveer een halfuur fietsen was naar Emmeloord voor dingen zoals ziekenhuizen en scholen etc.
Grappig genoeg was Almere eigenlijk nooit echt gepland, het kwam er gewoon ineens omdat Amsterdam uit zijn voegen barstte. Lelystad moest eigenlijk een stuk groter zijn dan het nu is (zie station Lelystad Zuid, gebouwd met plan dat de stad zou uitbreiden, nooit gebeurd), maar de betere locatie van Almere bij Amsterdam heeft veel mensen daarheen getrokken en niet naar Lelystad
Verder goede video en wel een mooie video voor Engelstaligen om meer over de Zuiderzeepolders te leren!
Inderdaad een mooie documentaire. Jammer dat op de oude kaarten niet de oude eilanden (Orck, wat alle oude dorpen van de NOP bevatte, en later Urk en Schokland). Leuk funfact is dat de plannen om een schone Noordoostpolder te beginnen mislukt zijn. Ze wilden de inwoners van Urk verhuizen naar Noord Holland zodat ze daar verder konden gaan met vissen. Uiteindelijk ging dat niet door en is Urk alsnog de Noordzee gaan bevissen met als resultaat de grootste visafslag van Europa te starten op Urk.

Wat ik zo mooi vind is da ze nu ook het natuurgebied de Marker Wadden hebben gebouwd. Dat bewijst blijkbaar echt een succes te zijn, steeds meer soorten duiken er op en het is een klein paradijs in wat anders een zeer natuurarm land is.

I was born in the great flood of 1953 in Amsterdam. My parents moved the family to Australia in 1956. I am Australian through and through, however I have a very soft spot for Holland. I don't speak Dutch, yet I instantly know when it is spoken. It is close to the time I revisited Holland and took in all the Dutch culture again (I was last there in 2008). This time the Van Gogh museum and all the museums nearby as well as The Hague and the Kroller Muller Museum. I am an art lover and there is no better than Dutch artists, IMHO.
I also connect closely to the Netherlands. My father, though keeping his voice low, told me he was an MP in the military during the 1953 flood and they had to shoot looters who stole from the abandoned houses and farms. Soon after he emigrated to Norway where I was born and raised, however it happened that I many yrs later moved to the Netherlands for studies, and had a very good time. Seems like the Dutch blood is a strong blood for both of us.

Honestly, also hats off to the politicians who took the risk. Not many politicians are willing to take a risk, especially ones that cost billions. I respect the politicians who saw what needed to be done, and did their part. Same story for the Delta works, built following that destructive 1953 flood. It takes guts to put billions of guilders into a budget, and trust the engineers to use that money wisely. Safe to say, it paid off. Incredible feats of engineering, incredible technical skills, and a lot of blood sweat and tears from all the workers, especially considering how little was mechanised at the time. Truly incredible.

We learned about the Dutch " poulders" in Geography when I was in school back in 1980. I was about 12 years old.Amazing how you remember certain things!

They had a lot of problems with this new farmland. For example, the normal traktors were not strong enough to work the heavy sea clay. What you see at 10:51 is not digging a ditch but plowing of the field with 2 bulldozers at once.
Great video essay on the reclamation projects. It’s kind of strange to me that in grade school in the 70s we learned about the Netherlands and the Zuyder Zee, but by that time it was mainly gone. and the polders were really the main story about the region.

Thank you very much, it was very interesting to see all history and contexts, how long and hard it had been to build this big part of your nice country and with such nicely documented footages it appear way more clear ... I remember here in France my history teachers was talking a lot about netherlands polders but at times it was a bit confusing: it seemed rather abstract to us what all this implied from the point of view of our country, which has never needed to do such terraforming.
The Dutch are very resourceful hard working people. And they love their land, their farming and agriculture. This love brought out the engineering genius in them. Heartfelt respects and admiration.

As someone who just came back from visiting Amsterdam, I found this entire video fascinating. Amazing to know how new some of the land regions to the west of Amsterdam are.
The Dutch engineers I got to know, at the international engineering company at which I spent my career, all spoke perfect English. As do most Norwegians and many Swedes, it’s impressive. The majority of Americans only speak US English, or here in California, Spanish instead of, or in addition to, English. English accidentally became the modern, global lingua franca and many countries, like Chile, focus on teaching it in schools to help their children’s future prospects. It does, tremendously. It is fairly easy to learn, not being heavily inflected (meaning few declensions), except for its goofy spelling and pronunciation, a product of it being mostly a dual-origin language, medieval Northern Germanic dialects and medieval French. A lot of Latin and Greek came into it in the Early Modern Period, too. Those who are native speakers of Germanic languages like Germans, obviously, the Dutch and Scandinavians find it quite easy, the grammar is similar, but simplified.
"English accidentally became the modern, global lingua franca...." Not accidental. The activities and wide-ranging colonization/trading of the UK peoples through the 19 century is a big part. And even more, the 2 world wars where the US played a key role not only fighting with, but supplying the allies. Finally, President Truman's decision to rebuild Europe via the Marshall Plan, hosting the United Nations in New York, and co-founding NATO were huge. Finally #2, the strength and vitality of the American economy and culture (yes, culture) including its education institutions and innovative research and development (R&D) linkages between higher education and government programs. Oh, and the US dollar and American generosity with willingness to sponsor foreign students, educators, researchers, and artists. Not accidental.
Actually America uses language/movies as soft power tools. Then again only good for science and we need an unifying language and since English is a Germanic language it puts us in the privileged class cause easy learning.
Also don't underestimate how movies and tv shows....and later internet....taught us English. I could already speak a bit before being schooled at it. And at 18 I was able to buy American comics, not the translated to Dutch but the American ones. While very good at English already this added a lot to my vocabulary. Only to find out later i mispronounced things because I had only read them and formed how to pronounce in my head Then later I heard certain things in a talkshow or something and I learned how to say it properly.

Shortened version: It is the natural consequence of the money that the US invested in alliances - NATO, SEATO, foreign aid including the Marshall Plan in Europe, technical innovations that influence/support cultural popularity, and higher education scholarships for foreigners. This was a very good video. Thanks I really enjoyed it. I visited the Netherlands for the first time a couple months ago and stayed in Lelystad. It was very interesting to learn about the origin of the names around. It is indeed a very special country and I'm planning to move there to work next year.

Vele molenaars hebben hier gevolg aan gegeven, en zo is er een grote hoeveelheid water op eco vriendelijke wijze uit de polders gepompt.

That was a very high density, concise and complete documentary. Even my geography lessons did not share all of it, never knew the ideas for the IJsselmeer were going back that many years.

The disaster in 1916: the flood reached all the way to Buiksloot, a former village just north of Amsterdam, now part of Amsterdam (North). This must have been a major inspiration for the gents living in the capital to push for execution of the plan.
Drove there in our Sprinter campervan in 2022 , and drove across the dam.

I’m a hydrogeologist and the Dutch are well known in the industry as the world’s best hydraulic scientists and engineers, especially for flood and saltwater intrusion prevention. My Dutch grandfather was born in a village called Kuinre right at the edge of the North Polder, the nearest market town is Steinvig, Steinwich, or something like that. My Mom, his daughter, was fortunate enough to travel there one year, and many villagers, descendants of their friends, remembered the family, which emigrated to San Francisco around 1904. Being carpenters and building contractors, they had plenty of work after the 1906 earthquake. My grandfather worked building ships in the US Naval Yards there during the two World Wars. Afterward, he was a building contractor on many homes, schools and churches throughout the Bay Area, including one school I attended in San Francisco.
I grew up in Emmeloord, in the Noordoostpolder. As a child we often went to the kuinderbos, a new forest bordering the former port town of Kuinre. It still is a lovely place. I think the market town you are referring to is Steenwijk. Also worth a visit!

An amazingly detailed explanation of how Flevoland got to the place it is right now. I was born in the "Zuiderlijke IJsselmeer Polders" in 1976. That's what it says on my passport. I was born in the city of Lelystad in one of the first houses built in that city. My father still lives in that same house. I still live and work there and when travelling abroad, many customs officers ask me about the lenghty name of my birthplace. For instance, when traveling to the US and applying for an ESTA, the form where I have to enter my birthplace only allows me to enter "Zuiderlijke IJsselmeer Pol" due to the restrictions of the length of the field I can enter my birthplace. In Dutch, my birthplace is known as "Bestuurlijk Orgaan Zuiderlijke IJsselmeer Polders". I had to explain this to the arriving airport in the USA that I was born there, 10 years before Lelystad became the capitol of the 12th province of The Netherlands called Flevoland.

I had no idea these polders were so recent. For some reason, I thought they had been completed back in the late 19th century. I think I saw a NatGeo article back in the 60s that made me think they were already done. Still it was a fascinating video. I have never visited Netherlands, but it is definitely on my list.
Quite a lot are, and much earlier too. The Haarlemmermeer is the most famous one of the 19th century. But the Middelzee inlet was already being 'ingepolderd' around 1100.
Many video's on historical subjects in Europe show maps which incorrectly display Flevoland.
Great video. I love the old pictures painting and films. My family is very Dutch. I was borne in California 1968.my Dad was borne beer Amsterdam in 1919. Mom in Delft about ten years after. They survived both Wars and floods. I'm 55 and still have a book about the big flood in the 1950's. That was the last straw for many and why our family and many others Imagrated elsewhere. I went to visit with Dad in 1991. He always wanted to move back. I would go tomorrow and stay if I could. 😁

I was nine years old in 1953, and I remember my home town, Ipswich, being flooded, and many more places along the east coast.
In some places, the water was so high that people who had taken refuge inside their roofs, drowned inside them.
The second hand furniture shops were full of water damaged furniture, so poor people could buy quality furniture items cheaply, if they were prepared to repair them.
My family is originally Dutch, so I feel a certain sympathy and affinity for Holland.

I like the Flevoland story, but prefer the Deltaworks. Also love how this is a really good example of agile working. Design, test, test succesful ->implement larger scale, test /test unsuccessful -> redesign, test.

Interesting video, but allow me a comment. At 0:13 you mention a rise in sea level of 70 cm, which would not be enough to break any dike. The days before the flood this was indeed the rise of the water level, but on the day of the disaster the level was more then 3 m (10 ft) above mean sea level.

Born in 66 i went with my dad buldozering around in eastern and southern flevo land where he did the groundwork for roads,motorways and urban areas, also deep plowing the former seabottom 3 feet deep. Times of my life catching eals in the new dug channels there.

We visited Holland a very long time ago & saw your beautiful tulip gardens. I still have a picture of my mother & myself as a little girl by a small lake in the gardens; she is pointing something out to me there. It is one of my most cherished photographs.I also have Dutch boy & girl dolls in traditional dress with me to this day.

Emmeloord isnt on the exact location as it used to be. Emmeloort was the northern half of the island of Schokland. Schokland was divided between Overijssel and Noord Holland. However the island grew smaller and smaller due to floods. And eventually King William the first decided to evacuate the remaining Schokkers (inhabitants of Schokland). The Schokland that they abandoned is still there and when you drive over it it feels like a little hill, while in reality you go from below to above sea level and back. Most of both Emmeloort and Ens is lost, as the towns were build of wooden houses, in the style commonly seen on former islands. Nowadays both Emmeloord and Ens are located in the Noordoostpolder, but on different locations. Schokland is a museum and you can visit it. Urk is still a municipality.
You did sneak in a lot of the Zeeland flooding disaster, something that isn’t part of the video. I was born in the Wieringermeer polder on my parents farm and lived there for 30+ years. Before moving to Amsterdam.
BTW the Germans flooded the Wieringermeer polder at the end of the war in an attempt to catch all the people, like jews, that were hiding in the farms and houses. The resistance tried defusing the bombs, but failed. Most of the farm buildings had to be rebuilt.

The flood of 1916 ravaged my hometown of Spakenburg. I was raised with stories by older generations how their homes were submerged by the water. But the big difference is that this was the last time it happened. In the 19th century this happened like four times or so. In the 20th century, this happened one time. The last time.
Nowadays, our village no longer lies at a tumultuous saltwater sea, but at a calm sweet water borderlake. In summers we spend our time on the Eemmeer with a small sailboat, and sail to Flevoland and have a good time.
Absolutely fantastic video! It shows what the ingenuity and will of mankind (or should I say the Dutch!) can do. A pity that we now live in an age when excessive environmentalims has made realising such projects impossible.
Yes totally agree. There are several good civil engineering projects the UK needs but ... environmentalists .. nature reverts and enhances given half a chance. We could certainly do with several coastal defence schemes , some stunning schemes around London and the estuary. No doubt some marshes will get drained ... better than half of Essex being a marsh in 30 years time.
We can still do these projects even with environmentalist requirements, it just means you need to spend a little more time thinking about how you are going to compensate by creating richer nature somewhere else instead. It does increase cost, but I am sure that if there was political will, the Dutch could polder in significant parts of the North Sea. It's technically feasible, it just requires political will.

Mijn opa was een van de mannen die de Noordoost polder hebben drooggelegd. Ik fietste naar de middelbare school in Emmeloord, langs eindeloze bollenvelden. In de zomervakantie was dat mijn standaard baantje: bollen pellen. Destijds vond ik het allemaal heel gewoon en saai, maar eigenlijk was/is het best bijzonder. Bedankt!
