I like that it can be used to capture the nostalgic feeling from the past, while also giving the user the option to create some complexed layers during drum design between the brute and other systems. This includes layering any number of the drums sounds within the drumbrute to make one drum sound. I also found that the brute drums punch through the mix nicely since I have had mine. And you just can not put a price on the fun factor that happens everytime you start a new session with it. One of the best investments I have made in a while.
Brilliant video, as usual. UA-cam videos never seem to do justice for drum machines. Its easy for people to forget and hate when watching on a mobile device you're gonna lose the low end and probably some of the mids, but when you fire up an analog drum machine in the studio with some monitors and effects etc, the sound difference is astoundingly apparent.
Thanks mate! Yeah I agree. The DrumBrute for example has a very analog, living, sound. Its so dynamic that I often distort the signal because small adjustments can impact the overall dynamics a lot. Its quite RAW.
I finally got to play with one a bit at Superbooth last month and was quite impressed. Good job covering it. Agree it's not the schiznitz of drum machines, but for the creative balance of capability and cost, it's pretty sweet. And it's just FUN to play with.

Great review and spot on! Most of the reviews and comments bash the sound, but they do forget the value that is offered for the price tag.
Needless to say, people will always find something to argue about, doesn't make any given gear piece a bad one.
Thank you for demoing this! I agree that many video demos cover a small and "popular" range of a piece of gear's capabilities, But that's why we have to have subscriptions to a few people like you who cover proper ground. I initially thought the Minilogue was disappointing after seeing the first videos that made it seem cold and harsh, but once I saw Adam Borseti's video's I knew what it was really capable of, and I got off the fence and bought one (and I love it). I've seen a lot of demos of the DrumBrute that similarly made it seem not so great, plus I've heard a lot of complaints from people about it's sounds. But I've learned to take a grain of salt with peoples opinions, because most people all want specifically modern drum machines or 808 and 909 sounds. I like the DrumBrute for all the reasons other people dislike it -- because it covers the kind of pre-808 sounds like the CR-78, which is ideal for more Berlin School, Vangelis, Jarre type music rather than electronic dance stuff. :)
Thank you mate! I try my best to give all pieces of gear a fair chance. And demo them the best I can. I think I disliked that so many demos were like techno-ish grooves only, or overly distorted stuff.
Exactly. This isn't really a techno or industrial machine, and that's good for my taste, :)
I got one of these. Looking forward to using the individual outs to really shape and punch up the sound, as best I can with an audio interface and my DAW.

Thanks mate! This is often overlooked. What I notice is that small adjustment to the sound can easily make it peak (distort) because the sound is really dynamic. This is something very positive I think.

I 100% agree with yor review. I recommend a second review showcasing the DrumBrute's sounds using the individual outs. I like sounds through the main mix, but the DrumBrute's sounds truly begin to shine with the individual outs.

I own the Drute. I can really get lost in jamming with it. I find it to have a weak output signal or rather, would be helped by a amp or drive circuit. And as mentioned external fx makes it shine. An accompanying minitele Arturia fx box would be awesome. Tried it the other day with an Analog Drive. Could be an option in the future. Did you mention the micro timing possibilities in the review?

It interests me as after buying and using the Arturia Minilab 2 and being impressed. I wasn’t hesitant about the Microfreak . As expected I love the freak and imagine the brute to be just as good. Hoping to find one used for a low price. Love your channel and advice.

Yeah, for sure. I have a deep, way-back fondness for drum machines (I'm old?) and it seems like the DB could inspire some similar ideas.
You definitely did it justice sonically compared to *some of the other videos. The Sonic State and Source Distribution ones are good... especially because Alex is so excited. Having played it in the store several times, on different systems, I can say it does sound way less "pillowy" than some folks have proposed. It's fun as hell. I think that's the most important thing besides the sonics and the super straightforward polyrhythmic capable sequencer. Cheers!

Great video Bo, thanks. At my music store Friday they had a Doepher/Eurorack set up with Drumbrute. I was trying to get some noise generation to influence the high hats a bit but I was running out of time. I think the clerk there said the Drumbrute was sending clock to the Eurorack but I can't remember. Fun stuff though.

BoBeats Hey, I "only" have a basic modular monosynth setup including an 8 step seq module but no drums yet. I'd like to jam/perform an instrumental beat and a drum machine seems logical but maschine/push are also tempting. Layering at least 2 sequences and playing live on top would be great too - can you suggest where to go next?

dang ! - already got a tr8 w/ 7x7 exp ( never sell ! ) one thing I learned - can't have too many drum machines ( mix and match ) think of the possibilities
I was going to buy this, but I have a beatstep pro and came across an old Roland 626 which has individual outs, midi in and out and also sync in and outs also does rolls etc etc so I bought that instead as I mostly use Roland hardware, but the Drumbrute is a seriously nice piece of gear, I also have the korg er1 and esx1 if I want to play around with motion control with my drums, but that being said if you are thinking of buying this it would be a fine investment for your studio, Arturia are a great company..
Great video as usual. Still not sold on the sound, I think it's just not there for me, but the design of the UI and fun factor is superb. I wonder what it would sound like through a desk on separate outs though, bit of EQ and compression on each could transform it.

Had one for about a week and sent it back as I found some of the sounds quite weak / useless. However now I have an RD8 to satisfy my need for an analog 808 alternative, I might revisit the Drumbrute as it does fill a sonic space that the RD8 / 808 can’t. It looks incredible too.

For the money, it is not bad. I want the new Analog Rytm MKII but cannot stomach almost 2k for a drum beat machine. I am thinking of the Drumbrute and new Octatrack MKII for my mobile rig to complement my Microkorg synth for a laptop free setup.
I think you did justice to the DrumBrute, I totally agree about the Hihat and snare, but to be honest I haven't found many analog generators that have a good phat snare and a nice cutting hihat for my ears, so I usually turn to samples for those aspects anyway :)

nice video and good videos in general! I was thinking about buying this, something more powerful than my actual (and first) machine, the Volca Beats, but then I watched the video with the Elektron digitakt and looks much more powerful and with infinite possibilities, just much more expensive... Do you think i should buy the digitakt? or conform with the drumbrute?
Digitakt is very different - but oh so fun! :-)
I wish there was more on how you customise the stock sounds. As an analoge instrument the implication is that you can shape the sound. Sure it has excellent sequencing possiblities and pattern effects, but what the sounds.
This demo showed some shaping of the snare sound, but there was no discussion on the options available. I also want to know if the output fliters can be applied to the individual sounds. Does the drumbrute support automation of its sound shaping parameters?
One downside for me is the inability to load new samples (drumkits) man, that would be awesome. My previous drummachine was an Electribe ES-1 (which I am aware is the sampler) but works very similar to a drummachine. With a range of effects it makes the Drumbrute's filter seem like a child's play. Have someone used the Arturia as a controller?

You mentioned that you apply effects to your Sub 37.... how do you do this? Is it done in a mixer or do you have pedals for the effects?

this thing can be huge, with the multi out and a good compressor effect set !!! plus some distortion effect and filter like sherman box.

Very good review! Exactly my thoughts - Awesome sequencer, some sounds not so great (for my taste), like the (weak) snare and (weird) zap, just like you've mentioned. As a TR 8 user I am a bit jealous of the polyrhythm features. That could be an interesting aspect for your next demo maybe...?

Drumbrute with several drum parts playing different numbered steps (from 3 to 57 because i was using a 4 bar sequence) midi syncd to a tt 303 bass bot playing an odd numbered sequence. The high pitched synth is a volca keys being trigger syncd to an unused drum sound, also playing a silly numbered pattern.
All live, recorded with a soundcraft mtk12 and strymon reverb and delay.
I figured out I'd have had to let thing running for about 17 hours just to start the second cycle.
So in summary - yeah man, bags of fun.
Yeah I have been thinking of doing a polyrhythm/polymeter video at some point. Thanks for the feedback mate! =)

I do agree with what a lot of other people are saying about it not sounding too tight on yt vids but i reckon that's largely due to everyone demoing from the main output.
The individual outs + a mixer with a couple of aux sends really puts the Drumbrute in another sonic field. Simple eq'ing and a few understated delays/verbs can give it real dynanism on par with any of the revered classic Roland/Oberheim drum machines going thru the same signal path, imo.
Limitations are what make an instrument like this. People like Mantronix/Egyptian Lover/Cybotron didn't sit around moaning about limited soundsets and lack of features; they worked within those limitations and found new ways of pushing the mixer to put their own identity on those classic, still champion sounds.

Hi, great vid as always! I've been considering buying a drumbox for some time now, im pending between the rytm and the drumbrute. I want something easy and fun with great sound. I guess the rytm has a more expensive sound but is it worth the extra dollars?
+Thomas Ljunggren thanks mate! The Rytm is great but the Drumbrute is more hands on. If you dig the demos I think the drumbrute can get you far. Rytm has a lot more options for sound shaping on the device and it has sample playback as well
I'm guessing they'll release a rev2 with better sounds so it might be a good idea to sell before they announce it.
Any chance of a comparison video of the DrumBrute vs the Keystep Pro? I am considering both. But, I can't find a shootout video between them both.
The DrumBrut is a great idea, but just short of being a drum machine with large pallet of various sound. For the person who only wants analog, this is a good choice, but for those of us who want a much wider choice is sound, it should have been digital. The individual outputs are something all other drum machines should take note, this is its best feature, and all beat boxes should have these. But I am going back to plan "A", buying a Micro / Minibrut and sampling my own synth drum designs into a digital sampler...like the Electribe or Akai MPX16.

What do you think about using the drumbrute for lofi hip hop?
Some people have negative comments about certain sounds on this device (snare,HH) but to me , it does not seem like an issue if you just tweak the sounds fine tuning knobs a bit. Like Bo put it "its quite analog and you need to treat it as such" . For an analog piece like this for the price that it is at, especially since the price has started to drop due to the DrumBrute Impact. You get a lot in this package and I personally have loads of fun with it.
wes gutierrez Yeah I love it. And I don’t think the snare sounds bad at all. The hats could be better but are still totally usable. I think a lot of people were wanting/expecting an 808/909 type device for some reason. But it does it’s own thing and it’s very good at it.
If the Arturia mini lab Mk2 I bought anything to go buy. It will be a quality product. I intend to buy one as I’m attempting to go all hardware.
So does that grouping aspect of the mute and solo mean that there is no actual mute or solo on the machine? Is that a good thing?
hi Bo, how would you compare the drumbrute to the Roland TR8? I've been trying to figure out which machine I'd like. very keen on drumbrute as it looks very playable live.
+Adam Robson I have limited experience with the TR-8. It is more versatile since you have different possible drumkits, and it has more FX if I am not mistaken. But they seem quite similar so for me it would get down to 1) if there is any function you cant live without. 2) which sound you prefer.
The individual outs is also a big plus for the DB!
The biggest problem I have with the drumbrute is that it has no proper built in mixer with sends for processing. You need to hog up all your A/D inputs to add effects to separate sounds. I currently use my Analog Four for great sounding analog drums. The A4 has a built in mixer with sends and built in effects. The other best part of the A4 is that I can program any type of analog drum sounds and also save them with the sequencer. The A4 makes a incredible analog drum machine.
A4 - 2k$ and DB - 0,4K$. Different prices. Different products. No comparation.
@@JL-bu8bz and it showed that it is a much better product, hence the cost.
This question is hard for me to explain, hopefully it makes sense. Does the random function and beat repeat function output MIDI CC, or does it only effect the synth? If I used it to sequence some other hardware, can I use the randomness function to add randomness to my other synth?
+tziirkq I dont know! I have not tested that... but... hmmm, considering it can send midi I would assume that random = creates a note = sent as midi... that is how it works on Beatstep Pro I belive... but need to test this
I'd be really interested in finding out. It's a petty solid piece of kit for the price, and that would push it over the edge.

Tried: yes! Extensively: no. My conclusion: AWESOME :D
I hear it has too many weak points and that many folks complained and ended up returning the Drumbrute for a better machine. I love the DSI Tempest and Analog Rytm so that will be my drum machine of choice. Costs more but worth it. Sometimes you have to pay more for quality. Roger Linn is a genius and love his design of the DSI Tempest and Linnstrument.

Not that I have noticed but I am also quite gentle with my gear so I cant really say how good the build quality is here

the MFB tabnzbar and new tanzmaus drum machines are soundwise at least from what I heard and to my ear pretty fat sounding machines with maybe more character than this but this one is a pretty good buy as well for the money. thanks for the review !

BoBeats allot of people forget to add accents. If you don't do that it sounds kind of quiet and wimpy.

Good video, but I wonder if there are more authentic drum sounds in this unit. I know you can adjust tones to get different sounds, but I mean in terms of settings. I recently came across an opportunity to purchase one of these used for a couple of hundred dollars. It's practically new, but I don't want to spend the money if I'm not going to use it. Judging by this video, it would seem as if this machine is better suited for dance and hip hop, so this would not work for me. Still, I will probably take it for a test drive before discarding the idea.

does anybody know if this machine has a count in feature?? when ever i hit record it jumps right into playback which is cool for live stuff, but if im starting with the drums i like to get a single bar count in so i can time the first kick correctly. my work around has been to put the first drum on the step sequencer, but thats not very streamlined...
A T you can press play and record and the sequencer will start playing. You can wait for the sequencer to go back to step one and start playing then, so it's a bit like a count in feature.
This is obviously obsolete, but the one good thing is some people might take a break from the way overused TR-808 (and TR-8)...just too bad it sounds so similar.

Bo, I've heard that the Drumbrute is able to send MIDI from its sequencer to a DAW or other hardware. Are you able to use the Drumbrute as some sort of MIDI controller for sample based kits inside a DAW?
I am going to get the Drumbrute anyway, but if it is able to do some MIDI magic it's a bonus :)

BoBeats The pods are analogue, but the individual sound channels are controlled with MIDI. I was more thinking of being able to send MIDI data from the pads through the MIDI OUT into some sort of sampler where I control other sounds. Is there a possibility for that?
Yeah this should work. I mean you should be able to sequence external drums using the midi out. Best to check manual but I think its doable

I love the DB sequencer & UI but the sounds aren't great. They can be improved using the individual outs to run into a mixing desk & effects but it's a bit of a hassle. If I was back again I think I'd go for the DB Impact. Same great UI & sounds better out of the box
Another good option is to use the sequencer to run midi into a DAW and then use your choice of samples

Maybe I can help out when funds come around to buy all this cool gear that you buy and evaluate. So far, I have been digging deeper into my Moog Sub 37 and Ableton Push and barely scratch surface on these devices so that keeps me busy for now.

Yeah I love my Sub 37 so much analog goodness for the money. It is not cheap but definitely good long term value for the money considering the next Moog is 2x the price and the Virus TI Polar is 3x the price. I still want a Virus though as my next serious synth. That thing is super awesome!
Yes Bo definitely do something on the Sub37. I have had mine for almost two weeks and everyday I learn something new on how to use it by messing around or picking up the manual or watching a video of someone using it and getting Eureka moments. I would love to see your take on it

Ha ha! You finally got one, Vangelis? I agree with everything you said. I think it has some great features, but it takes some tweaking to get the most of the sounds. I think the high hats get into the Boss DR 110 territory, which has a bit of the sizzling Detroit Techno sound. I also hate that dang Zap! It is totally cheesy Simmons sound for my tastes! I would have much rather had a cowbell or at least an Oberheim Laser Zap. I do like some of the functions like the rolls, step repeats and randomness. I read somewhere that Arturia is planning to release several versions of the Drum Brute with different sound sets. They deliberately did not want to make it a 909 clone. It looks like Behringer is doing that.

I can't really say since I don't use any hardware compression. In Cubase I rely on the stock compressors as well as NI compressors
I was seriously considering getting a DrumBrute but in the end decided to pass. The reasons being the size is too big for my space, and I already have a BeatStep Pro. In terms of drum machines, I already have an SR-16, PO-12, Volca Sample, Volca Kick and even a General MIDI box that has 6 drum sets. What I needed, however, was a multi-voice analog drum machine with separate outs and for that I settled on a Cyclone TT-78. Cheers! :)

How tight can you get with the sounds? Like every demo, including yours, has very loose sounds. The feature set looks great, but if it can't get punchy and tight I'll have to get a TR-8 instead.
I think I will do a sound demo at some point. You can get pretty tight, but its not an 808-clone

am I the person who thinks a sample based system is so much more versatile? as far as the types of sounds...like mpc, spark, etc. for a similar, if not lower price?
+Birch Garcia yeah samples are definitely more versatile. But I cant really replicate this sound easily with samples on Maschine.
I am guessing you have made a few tunes using this and circuit? am I correct in thinking your studio is over flowing with kit?
Yeah I have used it with the Circuit. Not made anything too serious with it yet. My studio is crowded... Yes... =)
I think your like a foster parent that has a big house. your synths are your adopted children and your studio is your big house. If you have any children that are not getting on with the others send them to me. I will happily adopt them.
