    Bought and returned Impact. Kept OG Drumbrute. Why? First off, Kick 2 on the DB is just like the kick on Impact. Just like it. If there's a difference, it's so minute it doesn't warrant discussion. Second, I'll take a synth filter any day over distortion. Distortion pedals are cheap and plentiful, but good external filters are expensive. I agree that the DB filter isn't that powerful--but when I double it up with a great distortion/fuzz pedal...well... Third, having the additional voices and individual outs means everything in the studio. Getting diverse sounds and being able to manipulate the individual tracks in the DAW is a necessity. To me the original is the way to go. That said, the Impact is a nice compact drum buddy for jamming, writing beats, etc.

    I really love the sound of the impact, I'm surprised that it sounds so much better than the original honestly! I was scared because I bought the impact before I really looked at the differences... but dang. I'm so glad I got the newer one, plus I like that it's smaller footprint so it doesn't take up so much space to do the same job!

    Awesome comparison! I think it boils down to what drum machine fits better in the style of music you produce, not which is better compared to the other. It's like being in the early 80's and having to choose between a TR 808 and a Linndrum. Both are quite capable machines and sound great, but each will alter the overall tone and feeling of a song. Imagine if Billy Idol used an 808 on "Eyes without a face" instead of the Linndrum, or Marvin Gaye said "Na, I think I'll go for the DMX instead of the 808" on "Sexual Healing". Apple's and oranges I say :)

    I had the DBI for a few months. I bought it for $140 and sold it for $220. The $80 chump change I made wasn't worth getting rid of it as I regret it after having the Volca Beats and the Behringer TD-3. It's heads and shoulders above these other two. It's a total quality device and a keeper, just like the Korg Monologue. Just keep them as they're both timeless.

    Drumbrute seems warmer (so I bought one), the Impact seems to have a harder edge to it, but both sound good, so I think which is best very much depends on the music you make. For me it was the warmth that won the debate as it suits my music more.

    Great video Bo, although I think you didn't do justice with the original.
    Mainly the kicks, which aren't that different if you use kick 2 but to my taste the og is much more versitile soundwise with congas for african grooves, clicks and rims and more sound sculpting options (although the fm drum is pretty cool as well). The ability to have two different high hats which doesn't necesserly choke one another is veryy handy. And the most important thing people forget is that these two like any analog synth are just crying for fx. Put the og Drumbrute with a beatcrusher and tell me you don't like the sound. Totally different beast! Sounds great though, would considered buying if I had'nt own the original

    Yesterday I bought the Drumbrute on marketplace. Both machines are good offcourse, but impact is clearer on the bass. I think for a midi setup like, with a keyboard or synth the Drumbrute is better for combining other drums with your keyboard or synth. The impact I think is more standalone with only an analoge synthesizer. But both is a matter of taste and the things you gonna do with it or create with it. But to have fun with it is the most important. I use the Drumbrute in combination with an E-80, SE-02 and MX-1 so Roland gear. The E-80 for the sound and background drums, SE-02 for the bass, MX-1 for the efx, drumbrute for variation of drums. I am a music hobbyist and thnx for the video.

      I ve just bought the impact after having re-sold my Roland TR8.I consider having done a very good operation,for a analog drum machine.
      I am surprised by the strong to enormous attack,particully whith the drumbass that really sounds enormous.
      I also saw that some persons dislike the fact that there are only 4 outputs , but after having had one whith only a left and a right output , for me it is heaven to have 4 outputs , that are finelly 5 , if you include the main output.If you use one for the kick,one for the snaes,one for the hhats , there are still 2 ones for the others instruments,that is not so bad,and enough.
      Imagine that Roland actually proposes only 2 outputs,right and left for its digital toys.
      I also have the rd8 from Behringer ,and the association of these 2 brummachines gives something really cool.
      The drumbrute impact is very precise , and not difficult to use , and sincerely , for near 300€ , it is a gift that I couldn't miss.
      No regret at all.

      Matt Greer Music Yeah I was interested in the OG Drumbrute because it’s so so fun to play. The performance controls are really cool. I could just never quite gel with the sound. I think it sounds fine but that it. It’s just fine. The impact on the other hand sounds much better, maintains the performance controls and adds distortion and an FM drum. For the $299 price tag, I may end up getting it.

      @@HotStrange TBH if you aren't using the individual outs on the OG then the basic sound is very hard to get with. You definitely need to use the outs and then process each sound individually. When you do that the OG stomps on the Impact big time if you know what you are doing. That said if you are short of studio space and mixer channels the Impact is an excellent drum machine with it's own character.

    Thanks for this! Great to have a side-by-side comparison. On the basis of this video I've decided the original Drumbrute is likely to be the right sound for the techno I'm into - solid, punchy, and clean sound coming through here (with the exception of that grainy open hat, maybe!) Love the sound of that filter - very smooth, and perfect for a drop. I would say the Impact really is not to my taste at all, although I can see how it might be preferable for some genres - bit more a synthetic feel? Very different instruments, likely intended for quite different styles of music.

    Out of curiosity, why did you program the kick to be so different on the two? The OG Drum Brute can do a kick that is very much like the Impact. There are videos showing that. The OG drumbrute has two different kick drums.
    So many folks in the comments focused on the kick difference because they may not be familiar with the original's sound. It's important.
    I do like the distortion on the new unit, and there are other things to like about it for sure. Core sound just isn't as different as this video makes it sound.
    For reference for others, here's your video on the original, with a more traditional kick.

      I think you are right here Pete. I am very new to doing side-by-sides and I think I could have done a better job on the kick. Thanks for bringing it up. Hopefully people still get a sense of the difference which I think is pretty evident. I did not use Kick 2 on the DB to fatten up the sound of the kick more because I stuck to the idea of just using the same sounds for both devices. For better or worse it was the approach I stuck to.

      Pete Brown I’m not disagreeing with you, that was definitely a valid point, but I think for a lot of people, myself included, the size is a big factor as well. I have a small studio space do the Impact is perfect for me.

      Oh sure. There are lots of things to like. The built-in distortion is one. Seems the accent/color is a bit more interesting, too. Just saw lots of folks in the comments making a decision based on the bass drum. The new bass does sound a bit different/better, but the gulf is *much* slimmer than the video might make you think.

    OG! More instruments. More individual instrument outputs for more options when externally processing and mixing. More pads. Individually tunable toms. A drum machine with so many outputs doesn't need to sound perfect "straight out the box". The 808 was almost always compressed externally. The Vermona also has the ability to route individual instruments out for processing.
    That is the point where you start making your sound. With the Drumbrute OG, any instrument that you don't send out from the individual outputs will still run through the Drumbrute OG filter. That is when the filter makes much more sense than a distortion/compressor. Because the Main Out will send those filtered sounds to you mixer for more options. E.g. Compressor distortion.

    Everytime I randomly end up on a DB vs DBI video all I can do is hope Arturia will come back and make a DB2 and it will be easy, just give the DBI the extra sounds (preferably some sample channels that we can load), individual outs, etc, but otherwise keep the DBI sounds and other changes.

    you can get that distortion also, when having an analog mixing desk, and overdrive the input gain a bit, so i personally don't see the added value of that distortion so much(unless per individual sound)...i remember that way back, the whole 'hardcore' kick drum sound, was made by overdrive the mixing console, on the kick drum, to get that typical sound, just as an example(not my kind of music)...but the fm drums are a nice touch though.

    That comparison is not very fair. You made the bass drum of the original Drumbrute sound worse because you didn't turn the pitch down but the sweep up. Also, with the original Drumbrute you can layer Kick1 + Kick2 which can sound extremely fat when done right.

      @@BoBeats Great idea for a video. OG vs Impact 6/7 months on!! Try having them play the same beats and use them both to their advantages. The OG has 12 outs so run the outputs through a board so you can enhance each sound either with a pedal or with a plugin plus you can layer the kicks, the snare/clap/rim. The Impact has 4 outs but it has better onboard processing. I would love to see you showcase these strengths in a head to head.
      Due to the creative sound shaping that can be done on the OG I never followed up any interest on the Impact as the only real advantage to me was it had a cowbell but even that can't be pitched unless I sample it so it lost it's appeal to me. If individual outs and sound design isn't your thing then for me the Impact rules the OG for sound straight out of the box and for size.

    the filter on the drumbrute sounds good ONLY if you distort the signal afterwards. So it makes the drumbrute mouch less of a standalone drum machine, you always need something to process it with cause it's just so soft in general. though if I'm in my studio, I do prefer a clean sound source, so used in a production environment, it's awesome, live it would suck balls.

      if you have an analog mixing console, you can overdrive the input gain on it, you can 'dial-in' how much you want your sound affected, it can be done per individual output also, then you can choose what channel of the drumbrute you want to be affected, and what not, it can be done with both drum brutes, or any drum machine for that matter.
      but i'm not sure it would work well with a digital mixing console, as digital distortion sounds bad.

    From what I can see with the Drumbrute ORG and the IMP they can work well side by side if they are used with the ORG on individual outs and the IMP on channel 11 (I don't use zap on my channels). That way all the effects from the IMP can be utilized without having to use the limited individual outs that bypass the effects. On the ORG that's an advantage with the filter but a disadvantage with the step repeat function.
    I did say that I would wait for the Tanzbar2 and the 808 clone but the IMP would be useful for the new features alongside my ORG. I'll be getting one or the other with the 808 clone or the Tanzbar2 anyhow so if the IMP is cheap then it's a no brainer really.
    I will see when it comes out and how it goes when I try it at the shop

      Luke Kage I’m gonna be getting the Impact. Not only does it sound better to my ears, but the size is a huge plus. My studio real estate is at a premium so the smaller Impact is perfect for me. And I’m loving that distortion and FM drum.

    The additional parameters on the Original Drumbute don't change the sound dramatically making it less of a selling point. Also, has anyone had issues adding the original in a mix? It sounds very soft to me while getting clipping on the kick drums (I am no recording engineer).

    Albeit it is a great comparison I still sit on the fence between these two because... it just struck me... I really don't know what I want. I don't do music but I enjoy playing around with synths. I recently got the Minibrute and love it. I think I might just choose the Impact in the end because it's more compact and as a beginner (is there a level lower than beginner? rookie? noob?) synthist I should just try it out and not overinvest.

    Sitting here, in the future (late ‘21), I’m really torn about these two instruments. The OG prices (even new) are coming down but I struggle to decide if I should get either one.
    I’m a drummer and historically, I haven’t been a fan of x0x drum sounds…but I suspect that they can become more musical with individual effects applied.
    The workflow looks superb, and is part of my obsession with these; I imagine I could get an interesting (and non-“cliche”) accompaniment going quickly.
    Or do I just get an MC-707 at 3 times the price and “X” times the capability?!
    Sigh……..,,

    I dont necessarily think that one is better than the other. I think its more of a preference thing. the sounds on the impact are a little tighter but the OG has more options as far as performance value. The OG has more drum sounds and analog controls to work with, which is nice but the FM drum and color feature on the impact are pretty cool. It just depends which features cater more to your style.

The impact seems to have a better snare sound with that overdrive. I’d like to hear the combo of impact as master with the og db as slave.

    I am totally new to synths, keyboards, and all these other music gadgets. I thought I was starting to understand a bit of the lingo, but now I am confused again. The reason is: I thought these drum machines would come pre-loaded with a bunch of different "virtual" drum-kits. So if you would like to make a comparison, like this, you would start by loading the same (or very similar) drum-kit samples on both synths. This doesn't seem to be the case, as you are pointing out the difference in sound between them (and indeed I can hear they sound very different indeed).
    So are you just comparing the #1 preset sounds on both machines (the most "out of the box" of the sounds), or is it kind of problematic to load the same samples/drum-kit on both of them?
    (Sorry if this is a very stupid question, but one has to start somewhere..)

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  6 років тому +5

      This is a analog drum machine. It only has ”one kit” which can be tweaked to sound differently. But unlike a sample based or digital drum machine it can’t really change its sound all that much.

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  6 років тому +4

      And it was not a stupid question. I understand that these things can be complicated.

    • @hallvardpaulsen
      @hallvardpaulsen 6 років тому

      Thank you for the reply. I guess analog is the keyword here. But in a world where everything is becoming "digitized", how come analog synths are the preferred alternative? (Wouldn't it be possible to make a digital synth that can do everything an analog one can, with or without the hardware nobs and buttons?)

    • @tonymirosevic9126
      @tonymirosevic9126 6 років тому +3

      Hallvard Paulsen Digital is emulation of analog. And sound difference is huge in my opinion. Try to compare for example original tr-909 and "new version" tr-09 or other roland digital clones of their classic analog brothers and you will get the piont :) also have in mind that if you try to compare it on cheap small spakers or headphones you won't probablly hear diffrence

  • @brianwredfern

    The original still has more depth to my ear. I like the impact but you can hear that the original benefits from a greater depth of circuitry that a larger box offers. The impact sounds a bit more like the akai tomcat. There's a greater range of depth in a bigger box. The volca beats sounds more like a toy because you can only squeeze souch range into such a tiny box. Bigger is definitely better when it comes to analog drum machines.

    • @brianwredfern
      @brianwredfern 5 років тому +2

      @NoiseFeedMusic well with analog a bigger box allows you to have larger components which enable a wider range of values for the analog device, a larger capacitor would enable a larger range than a small capacitor.
