This video is ticking all the boxes - Arturia, a drum machine and the TB3. Also, Jam 2 was immense. I have been looking at the Impact as they often pop up second hand at decent prices. Also, simpler is often better when you just want to make a beat and enjoy yourself. As you said, "Of course I do", I fully concur.
@@AudioPilz Honestly the solo + pedals jam is one of my favorite things I've heard on the channel. Reminds me of something you'd hear from Anthony Rother.
Nicely done. You did the Impact justice. The sequencers on both the orignal and Impact are quite powerful. If you don't love the sounds of either keeping them around to drive other gear may be worthwhile.
Speaking of drum machines, have I already mentioned I'd like to see DSI Tempest on the show? It used to cost a lot, had an awesome feature set on paper, very flexible sequencer for the time, but those features didn't quite add up due to quirky interface and hardware limitations.
@@AudioPilz Oh, that would be so cool. Its biggest hardware limitation is an almost complete lack of effects, so it'd be particularly cool to hear your "now let's hear how it sounds with external effects" test.
@ghost mall I own one and it's not that it sounds bad, it's just that for most of it's advertised functions you can find something that does it easier, cheaper and possibly better. It can be an analog drum machine, but it's voice structure is that of a general purpose synthesizer with a few nods towards the drum sounds - so the sounds are harder to dial in compared to a dedicated drum machine, especially if you don't remember all the recipes for drum sounds. It can play back samples, but it's basically a rompler - can't load your own samples, can't sample from an audio input, it doesn't do multisamples etc, so basically an MPC or an SP-404 is more powerful. It kind of works like a groovebox, but it almost doesn't have effects and automation is limited to the sliders, so when it comes to quickly creating complex, evolving phrases, a lowly Electribe ESX-1 blows it out of the water. It does make for a nice synth module, I'll give it that. So all in all it isn't necessarily very bad, but it does have a reputation of being an underwhelming piece of gear, especially if you think about the price. I'm not sure if there will be enough hate on the forums to qualify it as one of the most hated audio tools, but if Blofeld or Micron qualified, then I hope this one will as well :)
@@tomaszmazurek64I found the dry sound quite underwhelming and not very sophisticated... the distortion sounds amazing, shame that it is either on or off... no real in between. This thing could have been so great! with just some FX, a few UI tweaks, and 8 or 10 voices... My main gripe was actually that it's so annoying that when you play and tweak it live (what is it meant to do) once you change a parameter, say filter cutoff, it imediately changes that value instead of waiting for it to come to the current value... which is a no go, when playing with different sounds at the same time.. The workflow is very fast and intuitive though (unlike what I expected). Like you said it's a hard purchase to justify these days... still mad expensive, and if you really want to use it as a standalone groovebox, you basically need two.
Ah we got some phonk in that last jam. I’m impressed to see you drawing from the youth’s musical reinterpretation and reappropriation of past musical forms. Truly a nice exercise and test drive of the Impact! EDIT: Also I would love to see you test the Alesis MMT-8!
@@AudioPilz what an utterly useless piece of crap mmt 8 is! If you play with midi fader you'll eat up your event capacity in like 16 bars. Wtf? Older sequencers were.... Pretty idiosyncratic
Great video Florian! This was very timely as I was considering bidding on the Impact on an auction. Would be curious on your view on the Volca Nubass too :)
Hello, I'm not into modules or groove boxes. I recommended your channel to my old DJ friend. We had a band in the 80's and he played a symphonic ensemble with a drummer and me on guitar. He loved all that music from the early days, while I was more Pop and Rock influenced. Now, still on guitar I am into VST's and have always been horny for MIDI and its capabilities, since the 90's. I love looping. playing keys and triggering stuff w my feet and use an FCB 1010. I got a Behringer engineer help me get it working as I wanted to use it like a Roland PK-6 without the price tag. I find your videos entertaining and funny, and really enjoy the throwbacks sound wise. Thank you...
I own an ER-1 (like many, was my first drum machine) and your right, It really is reminiscent of it! sounds very similar. I love this show. Called "Bad Gear" but you show that with a lil perseverance and the right application there is no bad gear. Except the OG Drumbrute...
the 80s supercar track is sick is there a longer standalone version? We need an album playlist of your best track to groove to they are getting really groovy 🙂
Damn you killed it last sections of your video. I almost started to think this is first arturia I don't like. But then you tweaked gell out of it. Nice
How about a bad gear on the Alesis SR-18? It’s the same as the XR-20, with a sample set that’s erratically organized. But there are some nice techno stabs!
I had this machine once... it wasn't bad as such, but I never found a use for it in my studio. My main gripe is that you can't pitch the cowbell! I bought the Impact rather than the OG because you can 'colour' the sound and because there's an overdrive/distortion circuit. But these days I actually much prefer the OG version. Gotta have those zaps!
Top 5 Bad Gear for sure, absolutely in love with its cheap '80s sounds (especially the snare and weird 606 hats), the FM drum, and the fill strip. Mad Analord vibes
Pretty happy with mine. Just wish the distortion worked when you use the separate outs. Used it on most of my tracks, and I sometimes get compliments on the sound of my drums. I would like a black one, even if the orange stuff fits well with the rest of my setup.
Better than the OG drumbrute for sure, but all the sounds still need considerable processing to actually be good. Let’s keep the arturia hate flowing, please do the Beatstep Pro next!!!
@ghost mall The value knob to sequencer button layout is a wonky mess. Dialing in slide and velocity is more painful than its worth. 2 cv sequences are not enough. 64 steps are not enough. The CV outputs are only positive voltage so an offset module is needed to reach lower notes. Patch cables touching other knobs will prevent the intended knob value from showing. The firmware feature updates shouldn't have been afterthoughts. Muting drum hits feels inconvenient. You have to own other Arturia gear to remember where the polyrhythm button is. The octave worth of pads is practically unplayable and really just an oversized transpose button. The shift options and sequencer options are easy to mix up. We all deserve better than this. 😤
I love the darn thing. It's quick to scratch a beat, then cheat the manual automations as samples through maschine. I mean, it's a brute for a reason until you unlock it with a more powerful brain.
The key I find with the snares it’s to combine the two. Individually they sound like trash but if you program them together you can get some useable sounds
Love the DBI, yeah the Tom’s are weak but if you always use the impact setting on them and distortion all the way I think they sound pretty nice. I’ve used the kick + Tom’s to string together a sort of “bass line” and can be quite nice sounding because the Tom’s are a perfect 5th apart in tuning. This drum machine is so useful for my studio, I even use it as an (all anal log) metronome when practicing 😂
Hi, I really need your help, my drumbrute doesn't make any sound, I already check all the outputs, updated firmware, I did factory reset.... AND MAKES NO SOUND!
Hell yeah, I love my DrumBrute Impact! Sequencer is amazing and the sounds work for the electro-influenced stuff I make, plus there’s enough individual outs for sound replacing if needed.
I was going to make music but when I saw your video, I routed my monitors to my browser and clicked on it. I usually don't love arturia sound but the impact is the exception. You made incredible jam with it ! I hope you will keep it :D very cool video, even the memes were awesome xD Thank you so much for your always awesome content ! 🖤🖤🖤 And yes, the toms are disapointing, especially the weird tunning choice that lock the 2 of them together, 1 ton apart if I recall correctly
I have both, the drumbrute was my first "classic" sounding full form factor drum machine, but the industrial fan in my loves the impact. I appreciate them both for different reasons. They are fun to sync together as well

polyrhythm, also called Cross-rhythm, the simultaneous combination of contrasting rhythms in a musical composition. Rhythmic conflicts, or cross-rhythms, may occur within a single metre (e.g., two eighth notes against triplet eighths) or may be reinforced by simultaneous combinations of conflicting metres. The latter effect is characteristic of numerous non-Western musical forms (e.g., Indonesian gamelan) and of certain Western, especially American, compositions. Polyrhythmic and polymetric textures are in fact among the stylistic earmarks of such American composers as Charles Ives and his disciple Elliott Carter. Polyrhythm is also prevalent in American jazz and related Afro-American phenomena, including rock music. A polymeter is two or more meters happening at the same time. These meters share a common subdivision, so in essence, a polymeter is different groupings of the same note values being played alongside one another. For example, 3 sixteenth notes being played over and over at the same time as 4 sixteenth notes are being played over and over. They begin together, then grow further apart in their starting note until finally (3 beats later in this case) they re-align and begin their rhythmic cycle again. You probably hear the term polyrhythm much more than polymeter. They are related in a "mirror image", "upside down", or "inversely proportionate" sort of way. A polyrhythm is two or more evenly spaced note values with different subdivisions resolving within the same amount of time. For example, four quarter notes being played in the same amount of time as 3 half note triplets. Because a quarter note is typically counted in duple subdivisions it is different than a triple subdivision thus creating a polyrhythm rather than a polymeter (which has the same subdivision).
Favourite part of this entire video is the flash insert at the end of 'peeling off the protective film from the display to signify commitment to not be reselling any time soon'. 😂
@@AudioPilz It definitely is, but like certain other 'satisfying' experiences, can sometimes be followed directly by a deep sense of guilt and personal disappointment. 🤨
Best drum machine for the price, great reviews from SonicState, loopop, etc. It's hilarious how the sheeple synth crowd love this drum machine until a professional troll on Bad Gear tells them that it actually sucks.😂
Ahahaha, don’t like my comment, it was negative. Your channel, one that profits from trolling, that tries to convince people that good gear is actually bad, is one of the worst on UA-cam. It’s dishonest, it insults good, honest synth makers, it takes advantage of people who can’t think for themselves. Bad channel, shame on you.
@@AudioPilz Yeah I adore the TRs but man, we really need more non-sampler drum machines with their own personalities on the market. Speaking of Which, maybe you could do the Cyclone Analogic TT-78. Is it more than a gimmick ? PS : You should start doing effects too ! Rack or pedal.

I’d love to just jam with you one day 😂 Real talk though it’s wild what effect pedals do. I have like 5 pedals from Strymon big sky to eventide’s time factor and Space and it’s nuts what pedals do to any machine. Really happy this has individual outs. Think this is a selling point for me on drum machines. Would you recommend any others? You mentioned the Electribe was your favorite. Does that one have individual outs?!
I didn't get much use out of my impact I honestly wanted to be able to record the tweaking of knobs and automation but I used for a while glad to see it on your channel
I'd love to hear a little more behind the regular "song mode is not my thing" comment. I get the sentiment just not how to form an expectation about my own preferences. Great work as usual of course, big fan'!
Thanks! IMHO song modes on grooveboxes and drum machines don't make sense anymore. In a live perfomance you should be playing it anyway and if stuff is supposed to be released you gotta get the tracks into a DAW (which is usually better for arranging) for mixing and mastering
Been using my Arturia SparkLE for several years. Hybrid drum controller and software. Works great for me. I find it does everything I need for most situations. Also have nearly all the original components (MX-1, System-1, System-8, TB-3, VT-3, TR-8) of the Roland AIRA system, and still use the TR-8. The TR-8 was the most limiting of all the components IMO, took the most time to find ways to get what I needed to make it usable; most notable was the limited number of patches/pattern storage. I use the AIRA as my Psytrance/Trance/Acid rig, it's been awhile...may need to dust it off again soon.
I really liked my drum brute impact, the sequencer is pretty awesome and almost worth it alone. I really enjoyed the FM synth section, the roller strip and the really easily accessible, big controls for the mute tracks. It is excellent for sequencing the delicious sounds within the Alesis SR-16 and I found myself combining the two quite regularly. It’s the kind of drum machine that’s eminently playable and tweak-able almost begging you to make some music. I chalk that up as a win. However, with all that said I don’t miss it and haven’t looked back since getting a Roland TR-6S instead.
@@AudioPilz Arturia Software Centre > set the midi channels on the Drum Brute to the same as the SR-16 > use an analogue mixer with all the audio channels from both machines separated = insane tweak-able drum sounds with an arturia sequencer. Much fun, but very inefficient use of space ^_^

Like you said it's a hard purchase to justify these days... still mad expensive, and if you really want to use it as a standalone groovebox, you basically need two.
this is my favorite outro song you’ve ever made
Thank you!!!
Ah we got some phonk in that last jam. I’m impressed to see you drawing from the youth’s musical reinterpretation and reappropriation of past musical forms. Truly a nice exercise and test drive of the Impact!
EDIT: Also I would love to see you test the Alesis MMT-8!
Thanks! MMT-8 gets mentioned a lot recently!
@@AudioPilz what an utterly useless piece of crap mmt 8 is! If you play with midi fader you'll eat up your event capacity in like 16 bars. Wtf? Older sequencers were.... Pretty idiosyncratic
Great video as always. I have a DBI and can confirm your findings. I still like it, especially the sequencer.
Thanks!
Do you do the editing yourself? The cut-ins are especially on point this week! Love your stuff
Thanks! Yes, I do!
@@AudioPilz Mad skills! You must spend all week working on an episode?
@@AudioPilz you are a god
true, but it's hard to press Pause all the time for the memes ;-)
Das Editing ist echt krass. Hau den letzen Track mal ganz raus mit dem Video dazu!
Congratulations, I use the 0.25x playback feature on your videos more than any other youtuber. You've maxed out the memes/second attribute nicely.
Thanks! As Hainbach says - everything sounds better at half speed;)
Great video Florian! This was very timely as I was considering bidding on the Impact on an auction. Would be curious on your view on the Volca Nubass too :)
Thanks! NuBass is moving up my list!
Thanks! Happy to hear that!
I had the OG drumbrute and sold it. Last week I tried the impact and I have to say it sounded great!
Agreed!
I own an ER-1 (like many, was my first drum machine) and your right, It really is reminiscent of it! sounds very similar. I love this show. Called "Bad Gear" but you show that with a lil perseverance and the right application there is no bad gear. Except the OG Drumbrute...
True, the OG DB is the only piece of Bad Gear ever featured on this channel;)
I love the kick and FM drum on this unit! I’d still have one if I could find one free of hum.
Agreed! These two voices are the best!
Mine was getting hum until I realized it was coming from my usb hub. Unplugged from usb and it’s silent
Model:Cycles my friend. The kicks are absolutely brutal on it and well basically everything is FM.
@@BeastlyAnteater There's a good reason why 5-pin MIDI uses opto-isolators but I guess they're too slow for USB.
With all these stomp boxes you are really spoiling us!
Thanks! ❤️❤️❤️
Love to have mine processed by a Sherman Filterbank 2 or the MS-20 Mini's ESP and filter. It gets gnarly.
Nice setup!
Excellent. I put it through a Mutator and it mutated into something slightly better.
One drumbrute impact, add 5 stompboxs and Jam - watch the place go BOOM!
You rinsed that - nice work! 👍🏼
Way to go! Thanks!
the 80s supercar track is sick is there a longer standalone version? We need an album playlist of your best track to groove to they are getting really groovy 🙂
Thanks! Shameless plug: full tracks of the finale and extended jams as usual on my Patreon;)
Damn you killed it last sections of your video. I almost started to think this is first arturia I don't like. But then you tweaked gell out of it. Nice
Thank you so much!!!
How about a bad gear on the Alesis SR-18? It’s the same as the XR-20, with a sample set that’s erratically organized. But there are some nice techno stabs!
Great idea! Already had the SR-16 on the show. Thanks!
@@AudioPilz The SR-18 is so much better between it’s unique, large sample set and it’s master eq/compression and reverb.
At 1:45 is that Aaron Funk? Lol.. Another fine episode. Cheers.
Thanks! Yeah, the one and only VSnares!
A pitched cowbell would indeed be highly appreciated!
Top 5 Bad Gear for sure, absolutely in love with its cheap '80s sounds (especially the snare and weird 606 hats), the FM drum, and the fill strip. Mad Analord vibes
I get that 90s IDM feeling too! Thanks
"Do I need another drum machine? Of course I do!!!"
Story of our lives;)
Pretty happy with mine. Just wish the distortion worked when you use the separate outs. Used it on most of my tracks, and I sometimes get compliments on the sound of my drums. I would like a black one, even if the orange stuff fits well with the rest of my setup.
I want a black one too!
Better than the OG drumbrute for sure, but all the sounds still need considerable processing to actually be good. Let’s keep the arturia hate flowing, please do the Beatstep Pro next!!!
But, but, but,...my Beatstep Pro...😂😂😂
@ghost mall no because it's great
@ghost mall The value knob to sequencer button layout is a wonky mess. 😤
That last house piece in the video was a legit banger 🔥
Thank you!!!
I love the darn thing. It's quick to scratch a beat, then cheat the manual automations as samples through maschine. I mean, it's a brute for a reason until you unlock it with a more powerful brain.
Brutish AF. True!
7.37 tune - amazing!
Thank you!!!
Well, had to happen, he finally did something I own.
Nothing personal;)
Man i just got it, like 3 dayes ago. Love your show.
Looking forward too see it in action. And yes the cowbell is not the best.
Thanks! Every cowbell is sacred!!!
Cowbell is ok with reverb
The key I find with the snares it’s to combine the two. Individually they sound like trash but if you program them together you can get some useable sounds
Nice technique!
El nivel de este canal es demencial. ❤
The interval on the toms does make a lot of sense indeed!
Hi, I really need your help, my drumbrute doesn't make any sound, I already check all the outputs, updated firmware, I did factory reset.... AND MAKES NO SOUND!
Weird. Do you still have warranty?
Hell yeah, I love my DrumBrute Impact! Sequencer is amazing and the sounds work for the electro-influenced stuff I make, plus there’s enough individual outs for sound replacing if needed.
The individual outs indeed rock!
I was going to make music but when I saw your video, I routed my monitors to my browser and clicked on it. I usually don't love arturia sound but the impact is the exception. You made incredible jam with it ! I hope you will keep it :D very cool video, even the memes were awesome xD
Thank you so much for your always awesome content !
🖤🖤🖤
And yes, the toms are disapointing, especially the weird tunning choice that lock the 2 of them together, 1 ton apart if I recall correctly
Thank you so much!
I’m convinced that Arturia knew how shitty the OG drumbrute was. I believe they really did make up for it by making the impact.
Agreed!
I prefer the OG drumbrute... you've got to use FX on it though
I have both, the drumbrute was my first "classic" sounding full form factor drum machine, but the industrial fan in my loves the impact. I appreciate them both for different reasons. They are fun to sync together as well
Jams 2 and 3 hit the redline on the groove tachometer! Fantastic!
Thanks!

@@AudioPilz Thanks We have in France Les Sondiers network and Knarf explains he will stop ua-cam.com/video/oEGiL6tZLIM/v-deo.html because he is not ableto live from UA-cam, also mainly because the time to mount videos ... Are able to live from YT yourself ?
polyrhythm, also called Cross-rhythm, the simultaneous combination of contrasting rhythms in a musical composition.
That sums it up pretty nicely;)
Thanks for the Cowbell episode,
Always a pleasure!
Favourite part of this entire video is the flash insert at the end of 'peeling off the protective film from the display to signify commitment to not be reselling any time soon'. 😂
Sooooooo satisfying!!!
@@AudioPilz It definitely is, but like certain other 'satisfying' experiences, can sometimes be followed directly by a deep sense of guilt and personal disappointment. 🤨
Awesome. Always. You birng me so much joy. Thank you!

hello and welcome back to good gear
❤️❤️❤️
I can't believe it's Saturday before I got to watch it. Hell of a week, lol
Yeah, some weeks are tougher than others...
@@AudioPilz first world problems, I think they're called!
got this drum machine for christmas last year. love it. used it for some of my songs on soundcloud
Nice!
@@marike1100 every comment is welcome ;)
The sound is so refreshing. I love it.
Yeah, not another TR
@@AudioPilz Yeah I adore the TRs but man, we really need more non-sampler drum machines with their own personalities on the market. Speaking of Which, maybe you could do the Cyclone Analogic TT-78. Is it more than a gimmick ?
PS : You should start doing effects too ! Rack or pedal.
Great tune at the end!👍
Thanks!!!
You're too much dude - love your show!
Awwwwwwww YES Friday ritual of watching Bad Gear can be completed
❤️❤️❤️
Hallo.
I'm always amazed (in the good sense of the word of course ) by mastering the instruments you present.
As usual, a great video.
Looking forward to the next !!! :)
Thank you so much!!!
Nice Finale,
Sound like a weird orbit between 6 moons.
Thanks!
I thought I could learn to speed read to catch everything in your videos. But alas I had to rewind towards the end because I missed something, then I noticed something else I missed and rewinded again and again discovering new things until I ended up at the start of the video.
Yeah, Bad Gear is not a linear medium;)
I’d love to just jam with you one day 😂
Real talk though it’s wild what effect pedals do.
Thank you!!! In that price range the DB Impact is quite unique
I didn't get much use out of my impact I honestly wanted to be able to record the tweaking of knobs and automation but I used for a while glad to see it on your channel
Yeah, that's quite a limitation
Really liked the TR-8 a lot tbh. Airas are great but the looks;)
@@AudioPilz I always did like the green of the AIRA system. Just me? ;)
Big fan of the SR16 here too!
The irony here is that your video of the OG Drumbrute convinced me to buy it!
And? Will you get an impact? ;)
@@AudioPilz I'll pass, I'm still happy with the original even though it's bigger than I'd prefer.

Thank you so much!!!
Very eloquent summation of the Impact- couldn’t have said it better myself! Yes, I’m a confirmed Arturia fan but I also vastly prefer the Impact over the original. It just seems to suit my tastes and needs better.
Thank you!!!
