I’ve been watching this series with a friend of mine each week. He’s an anime only and while he really loved season 1 while we were watching in 2019, it didn’t make any of his favourite lists at the time. However just a few episodes ago (2x20) he had a real emotional breakdown that I’ve never seen from him before and he said “I wish I had Thorfinn when I was a teenager”.
He told me about the anger problems he had growing up, got into wrong crowds and got into a lot of trouble, and that it took him a looong time to break out of the downward spiral. After this episode he said that he has so rarely come across a story that handles self improvement and healthy masculinity soo effortlessly and Thorfinn almost certainly will become “my favourite character in anime”.
Thorfinn is without question one of the best examples of healthy masculinity out there. And yet as you said in your discussion, he is still a work in progress. He has soo much to learn, think about, and put into practice. 4 years is certainly a long time but it can happen in a blink of eye too and yet here he is. We finally see Thorfinn as himself. His true self. I can never fully articulate how much he means to me. Soo proud of this man ♥️

@@PyjamaKing This story really is precious. I have a lot of internet friends who have told me their stories of how VS has effected them. I’ve read soo many comments of people who write about how much this story means to them. However, the experience of having someone (whose very dear to me) right in front of me share their pain and how they feel this story is healing them? It was such a special experience that I’ll treasure forever. That’s the power of Yukimura’s story.

    - The Vikings even Drott having respect for Thorfinn as a true warrior.
    - Thorfinn finally saying the words his father Thors wanted him to say and believe in all this time.
    - Olmar admiring Thorfinn's determination and strength to fight for Ketil's farm without any violence. Plus Thorfinn showed him what a real man really is.
    - Einar showing us the pain of an average person getting caught in the violence caused by ideals of people like Canute.
    - Canute revealing his true ideals on how he will make his version of "Paradise" on earth.

Thors tried to teach Thorfinn a lesson about him having no enemies. But it's not a lesson that is easily understood by a child. Thorfinn had to grow up, experience a lifetime/46 episodes of hardship, to understand those words. I would even say that Thorfinn had a harsher story than Thors. We don't know exactly what happened, but it seems that Thors became a father, suddenly started fearing death, and then adopted the true warrior lifestyle. Meanwhile this all came naturally to Throfinn. Sure he had his father's guiding words to point him in the right direction. But he developed his distaste of killing, through years of senseless murder and ptsd taking their toll on him. But yeah, Thorfinn reached the point where his father started.

In concept Thorfinn and Canute had the same idea. They both know that the vikings are the problem. Thorfinn decided that the best course of action was to run away far from them and build a better place from zero. Canute decided to become their king, show them that he's a strong warrior worthy of being called King of Vikings, raiding and destroying his enemies to earn their respect. That way, little by little, he would change their traditions from the inside. The interesting thing is, that they're both right, and a middle point in their stances could be the real secret to achieve peace.

Great Vinland Saga reaction, as usual. I can't wait to watch your next reactions.
By the way, taking into account that you are getting closer and closer to the end of this second season, which means that there will be a gap to fill in your reactions schedule, I highly recommend that you both fill it out by choosing to react to the psychological thriller *Monster*
It's a masterpiece that I think you'll both love for its great themes and characters, and I personally think it would be perfect for your amazing reactions.

@@somestuff7876 In reality too. People aren't born and don't become someone's enemies, they make enemies of themselves. The "I have no enemies" ideology is not about pretending that people don't fight each other and that wars exist, but rather about trying to make people who do that realize that it's unnecessary from the start. I know it's not that simple though, but it's still a teaching that can enlighten the thoughts of many people out there.

@@MoonS4444 I disagree. There is no difference between this message and "love thy neighbour".
And how many people were sacrificed under Christian banner alone? ..Exactly.
Sadly, theme of the manga did not jam well with me in the end, even through Thorfinn journey was well crafted in s2.
The story makes favorable assumption about Rationality and Empathy of people who literally start wars. If we move the message to current day and age... Nothing can be gained in the war anymore (except for asserting dominance). Especially in that particular one and yet, we are freaking here. At best 10 man (better yet, first generation born after WWII. Generation that lived with one mantra: "Anything for a life without war"... can you be surrounded by more pacifism? idk) succumbed to greed or fear and now millions suffer. You could even argue that smaller war could have saved us all from a bigger one ffs
Honestly, if manga/anime stayed in the lane of betterment of oneself and didn't brought up political angle at all (I'm assuming you know, but just in case SPOILERS for the next episode) or let Thorfinn "lose" and actually just let him wash his hands away with "well, I tried, guys". It would had bulletproof message with some weight of realism that would allow it to separate itself from being a rehash of the Bible.

    • @MoonS4444
      @MoonS4444 Рік тому +1

@@somestuff7876 I somewhat agree on the conclusion at the end. the catharsis of Thorfinn's ideology could wait longer to happen, and in general you are free to think that way as I know not everyone will welcome it with such open arms. But "I have no enemies" is not the same as "everyone is my friend", so it is not completely similar to "love thy neighbor". In my view Thorfinn's ideology says about you not seeking to have enemies. Do your best not to harbor a hostile feeling towards someone, as it takes up too much of your life (as well as Thorfinn seeking revenge against Askelladd and I can even relate on that feeling). People will want to make enemies of others eventually, that's for sure. But there's no side that won't lose after that. Again, I know that applying such an ideology in real life is more like a utopia than anything else. It's not a solution to every problem, but an attempt at it. I'm sure many were influenced by this second season at least.

@@MoonS4444 True, to each their own. I'm not 100% sure it isn't just semantics at this point, but to me combo of the main message with the action that literally goes into "turning the other cheek" and That conclusion is very hard not to take it this way. Just saying how I read it, feels like this is "agree to disagree" type of a situation.
Look, if Vinland Saga somehow was able to reach the target audience, and not just people who already agreed with the message, and did what other moral principles (and maybe Beatles heh) couldn't - than more power to the creator.
I just wish that emphasis on mature themes that fans talked so much about would have hold true for the main theme. There were way more nuance to Thorfinn getting out of the hole storyline; Criminally underused Canute's balancing act and even Ketil's ability to be great "employer", entitled man, pitiable coward and despicable human being at the same time.
p.s. "Run" or remove oneself out of the situation (if possible) is the best part of that advice. Especially for men.

I don’t think anyone is wrong in this situation thorfinn and canute want the same thing but thorfinns way does not fix the problem it only halts it canute is directly addressing the problem which are Vikings and by saving changing the Vikings it fixes the problem he saves the many with the cost of the few. From einar perspective he is apart of the few and is the sacrifice for paradise most people would sympathize with einar because we are part of the few. Canute being a king in this world would be hated regardless by a group no matter what choices he makes if he decided to do nothing the Vikings still are problematic and the few like einar would still blame the king for doing nothing. Whatever you do there is a cost imo canutes way is the only way and the right way if you want change if you don’t want change then your still doomed to Vikings anyway canute would be the cause of death either directly or indirectly by doing what he’s doing now or doing nothing I don’t read the manga but I honestly think thorfinn may help canute in his journey to achieve this as I think a true king and true warriors are what is needed to achieve paradise in this world.
