The part where Thorfinn drops the blade his father gave him hurts so bad. I felt so bad for Thorfinn. He loved his father so much that he didn't even realize he had no goals or any meaning to his life except avenging his father. The blade was the only thing that made him feel closer to his father other than his father's ship after he lost him. The blade symbolizing his past as he lets it go while seeing his journey throughout the years he spent down a path of hatred and despair shows you that after that day when Thors died, his emotions hadn't changed since he was 6 and the torment he had to deal with, the time he had passed with Askeladd for so long as he grew feelings for Askeladd all crushed him in realization that everything he did up until now wasn't worth the hatred or anger and that he should've moved on. And then the last three reflections on his blade are his father's face, his child self, and then his own which hurt even more. I shed so many tears during this scene and it's hard for me to cry. It's a bittersweet moment because the memories are so lovely and sad, but he finally moved on and the future awaits him and makes me feel so happy for him. He died for others, for something greater than himself and no because of violence is fun or smth of the sort. Or at the very least he died a hero.
What makes Askeladd the greatest anime character since Itachi is this finale. He could have told Thorfinn the man who is responsible for his father being killed is in this very room knowing he would go berserk and kill him for sure at any cost, but he instead set him free from the path of revenge. When it came down to it though it was never said both of them respected one another and you can tell Thors was the only other viking Askeladd respected aside from Bjorn that's why he never forgot him and kept his son along. He hated himself more than anyone knew so he never had a kid, Thorfinn is the closest thing to a son he ever had and he genuinely cared about him and taught him how to survive a hellish world with each duel.
To add on your comment: Askeladd did not kill Thorfinn initially where Thorfinn had no practical benefit, and the word “practical” is his middle name. But because he ended up killing the man he most respected, “raising” his son was the least he could do. However, after Bjorn’s death, it was time for Askeladd to let go of his surrogate son too. His line “I should thank Thors, too” in episode 22 was not intended to humiliate him or his father, but to give Thorfinn an epiphany - that he wasted almost 2/3rd of his life chasing something Thors never would’ve wanted. It was meant to free Thorfinn’s soul from his grasp, in order to finally give the boy a real life. There is a distinctive parallel between the death of Askeladd and Thors. They both gave their life for the greater good, and their death caused a drastic shift in Thorfinn’s worldview. Askeladd could’ve told the cold truth to Thorfinn much earlier and some of the situation that he put Thorfinn through was far too much for a child, and that goes to show that he was not a man of same caliber as Thors. But despite this, he was still an endearing and respectful individual. Thorfinn, partially to cope with the loss of his father, ironically viewed Askeladd as a second father-figure and cared for his well-being. That is why upon Askeladd’s death, what we saw on Thorfinn’s face did not indicate rage, but a familiar despair.

The funny thing is that both anime/manga have very similar tone, themes, conflicts and character motivations and so on, the part where they differ the most is story pogression and ofc setting though the cliff hanger was really similar for both shows, I guess it's no wonder given that Wit studio made both of these master pieces, you gotta really give it to them. Which reminds me, as far as Anime awards are concerned, they have really a good chance of sweeping nearly every category. They have either or both of them in almost all categories, I think Wit has definitely struck the most waves even in such an excellent year for anime. I really hope Demon slayer will just get it's damn animation award and leave it at that, bc beyond that it doesn't deserve all the hype it gets. As for which one between Aot and Vinland saga was the better season overall, well it's matter of taste really, but Aot season 3 prt 2 was better paced, more action packed and much more significant for the series with the basement reveal and all. Quite honestly I don't even think the One piece will end up being as significant and special considering , how many therories under the sun already exist, there isn't really any way I'll be as blown away or taken aback by it as I was by Aot and it's very particulary and tight packed setting, plot and dialogue, it really is the best example of less is more.
@@knowcomment4525 Not going to lie my opinion might be biased considering I was spoiled about a lot of things in Attack on Titan, the anime definitely holds up so damn well (WiT Studio know what they're doing for sure) considering the animation and music and key moments still gave me major goosebumps. They're both anime which know how to make you feel invested & immersed in the world as well as the character development being great.
@@knowcomment4525 My man ✊🏽 I couldn't have said it better myself. Demon Slayer deserves the animation reward but definitely not anything beyond that. High quality animation does not mean high quality story telling. I think I pick Vinland Saga because everything was new to me, as I've been caught up to the AOT manga for years now, but honestly any choice between those two is a respectable one.
Askeladd protecting both Canute and Thorfinn at his moment of death. He knew Thorfinn would try to save him, so shouted at him to stay back so as to not implicate himself.
Even 3 years later this was awesome to see yall reaction to S1 of Vinland Saga. Perfect time for me to watch this with S2 coming in just a couple of months in January 2023. It's still wild that all of this was a prologue to a bigger story and journey.
When Askeladd asks Thorfinn what he was going to do with his life, the shot where it's them two and it's white all around them is the exact same as when Thorfinn was hugging Thors while he was dying, I just realized this. Basically as he held his father he now holds his father figure, both in moments of dying, both moments also crucial life lessons to be taken from.
Yes its tragic, he has spent his life purely on revenge which end in nothing...but because of that he will realized his fathers last words "A true warrior doesnt need a sword"
gerdan bombales and the person who did not seek it after having all the right reasons (canute) obtained it. Yet another episode that shows us two sides of the same coin.
When Thors died, Thorfinn didn't understand why. Thors was the most powerful warrior in the world, but he let himself be killed by a villain, for reasons Thorfinn couldn't comprehend. - - The same thing has happened with Askeladd. Thorfinn doesn't know why Askeladd decided to die. He knows Askeladd wouldn't have just gone insane, like they're claiming, so he can't understand how Askeladd was cornered into making the decisions that led to this outcome.
Yo what's crazy to think about, is that Thorfinn spent more time with Askeladd than his own dad... He was 6 when his dad died, he's 16 now... Askeladd deadass was a father to Thorfinn for longer than Thors.
*Ep 15 shows a bit of Askeladd's past* Roshi, Sheera, Lupa: Oh this is where they make us feel bad about him. Nope not gonna work this time. Ep 24: Hold my onions
I couldn't stop crying after Askeladd's death scene. I remember reading the manga and just tearing up a bit and I cried more later on during Farmland Saga. Askeladd was the true MC of this first season. We also got to see a sneak peak of some major characters that will appear later on in the second season, if we're lucky to get a second season. This series is a MASTERPIECE!
@Tony Soprano you're missing the point, the next season is far more psychological and introspective. It is what is needed to advance Thorfin as a character. If you want action action action, go watch some generic Shounen mediocrity. This show is about real shit.
I think it's beautiful how Thorfinn wants to kill Askeladd with all his heart and he thinks that one day he will, simply because he can't believe that Askeladd would die before then. In the end he came to care about the man he wants to kill. The line that shocked me the most was him saying "Are you going to die? You...?" As if he said, I don't believe you're really going to die, there's no way you're dying right now.
man..........I'm really not trynna be this guy. But I have to be this guy. This is the most pure and perfect reaction ya'll have ever done. It shows how amazing and well adapted Vinland Saga is. I guess I need to stop my shonen v seinen battle in my head. In my mind no generic shonen fight will ever top a seinen story......but seeing the views on this vid vs the mha hype episodes is something....it's something man. Idk. When askelladd died (and I have a great relationship with my father) his question of "what will you do when I die?" that hits so hard. I'm a little older now. I'm 27. Maybe that's all it is. But this finale hit me harder than anything I've ever watched in recent memory. I feel like it's not gonna be recognized as much as it should due to being on prime.
To add on your comment:
Askeladd did not kill Thorfinn initially where Thorfinn had no practical benefit, and the word “practical” is his middle name.

Damnn it's so hard for me to choose between Attack on Titan or Vinland Saga for anime of the year...but I think I gotta give it to Vinland Saga
Vinland slaps 2019 for being this good with just one season in my opinion
@@JustLunarr Yup that's facts I definitely agree with you on that
The funny thing is that both anime/manga have very similar tone, themes, conflicts and character motivations and so on, the part where they differ the most is story pogression and ofc setting though the cliff hanger was really similar for both shows, I guess it's no wonder given that Wit studio made both of these master pieces, you gotta really give it to them.

Their faces at the end when seeing the upcoming characters
“Who tf is that” lmao had me dying
I feel like Thorfinn rn with the season ending no purpose

gerdan bombales and the person who did not seek it after having all the right reasons (canute) obtained it. Yet another episode that shows us two sides of the same coin.
When Thors died, Thorfinn didn't understand why. Thors was the most powerful warrior in the world, but he let himself be killed by a villain, for reasons Thorfinn couldn't comprehend.

The same thing has happened with Askeladd.
Thorfinn is actually about 18 by the time Askeladd dies. So he has basically been with Askeladd for most of his life.

I agree
I'm just glad ya'll had the same reaction I did.
We crowned it the show of the decade
"What will you do after?" the single most important question of this entire series. Rage has no end. Revenge has no end. War has no end.
It's all fun and games until Lupasan-senpai starts tearing up
