He then talks to canute and canute agrees to leave the farm alone (its also shown he carried the kings seal but didnt show it to the guard to prove to himself his worldview shift wasnt for nothing). Thats the end of season 2 season 3 has more action so i didnt read it.

Thorfinn is as complex as Askeladd, if not more. He knew he wanted to kill Askeladd, but you can tell that he had slowly lost that conviction. Whenever we see him raging about this fantasy of vengeance, he's actually angry at himself, specially when his facade begins to fall apart and he comes to the realization, that maybe he doesn't want Askeladd to die, not because he cares for him, but because he's a mentor, and in the end, as fellow warriors, he trusted him. He tells others he wants revenge, when in fact, he's trying to keep himself from faltering. The moment that was defining to me, is when Askeladd tells his story to Thorfinn and Canute. We finally know that he had already seen through Thorfinn's facade, by telling him how to kill someone you hate, how it took 2 years, compared to the 10 years it's taken Thorfinn. He was indirectly telling him that he didn't truly hate Askeladd. He was comfortable in that place and with those people. Facing himself in the reflection of his dagger, alone in the snow, feeling his only sense of purpose fading away, it was truly frightening.

Whenever he's lost looking at the horizon, at the sky, at the birds, he wonders about what possibilities lie beyond what he sees in front of him. Whenever he's staring at his blades, cleaning them, he's questioning his purpose. His real desires are shown in his dreams, he wants his family, a normal life, but then the dream always falls apart, he's reminded of why he can't have what he wants. Thus, he comes to the same conclusion over and over. I mean, he even feels guilty about murdering others, because his dad reprimands him in his dreams.
I disagree. In this season Thorfinn is supposed to be a one-dimensional character. That's why the last episode is titled "The End of Prologue. The next season is the time when Thorfinn finally becomes a complex character after his character arc.
Normally the king (villain) somehow survives and the dude attacking gets caught or something, this was so new and refreshing, seeing the king die without any plot armour stuff
The split-second decision that Askellad makes - killing the king to protect his mother's homeland, saving King Canute and knowing that all of that is going to be possible only if he dies this moment by the hands of King Canute. Damn, dude. I got chills writing this. The writing is so damn good.

He wants to protect Wales, his mother's country from invasion from these so called savages, but the hypocrisy is he's lived all his life as a viking, and only at the end we find out he has that self hatred within him. He also subjugates himself to a Dane (canute) who he considers civil. In the end, he sacrifices himself for Canute to rule, and Wales to not be invaded
This is the best story so far of an anime I’ve ever watch, I started hating Askeladd, but at the end, I started liking him. It shows how life can turn out in a long way, even Askeladd was a true hero in a different way.

It's easy to hate Askeladd for killing Thors but Askeladd is such a genius and unpredictable character. He's got so much depth to him and he winded up becoming one of my favorites in season one.
Revenge is all Thorfinn had for so long. And when he lost his purpose, he immediatly thought of venging Askeladd: he attacked Canute as almost a reflex. So well written, so well done! And it just keeps getting better in the next arc! A lot of themes are thoroughly explored and it gives a whole new meaning to peace and being a true warrior. The tears man, I wish I could forget it and reread it all over again!
Thorfin has moved on out of his hatred at the end and truly felt despair of askeladd's passing. That was shown by how he drops his knife to reach out to askeladd's dead body. That's the only noticeable development in thorfin in this season and it's big.
I love how the dagger drop and the introduction to the other characters made everyone quiet, and take in the animation and music, and just be confused about who these random three characters are.

I don't know but this Anime is so great .they had a well written evolving characters,from Thors sacrificing himself to Askeladd , who was the glue and catalyst to the whole season 1 ..he was pulling all characters together, he developed 2 people, king Canute and Thorfinn, both wanted to create a peaceful world with opposite means..
The scene where Thorfinn drops his father's dagger and the ensuing flashbacks in the reflection of the blade speaks volumes. With Askeladd's death, Thorfinn's quest for seeking revenge is over. Thorfinn now has to move on, as Askeladd mentioned. Even though Thorfinn grew more hesitant to kill Askeladd (as seen in the third duel where he stood frozen until Askeladd tossed his sword and angered him) his sole purpose in life was still to murder Askeladd with his father's dagger. Askeladd speaks to him in his dying words about moving on and going further than his father has been. As Thorfinn is being dragged away, he slowly releases his grip on his father's dagger and drops it on his own, it is not someone else taking it from him. This is him finally realizing his self-imposed life's journey is over by dropping the instrument he was to use to exact revenge for his father. The reflection in his dropping blade then shows the reflection of his journey up until that point where seeking revenge was all he wanted in life. The final two images were a younger Thorfinn (the start of the journey) and then the current Thorfinn being carried away (the end of the journey). At least that's my take.
