      I live in Israel, and in the summer I like to leave my back door open to get the breeze. I get occasional visitors like house geckoes, whiptail lizards, jumping spiders, and the occasional field mouse. None of this bothers me. Then one night, I see something out of the corner of my eye, and it's a GIANT CENTIPEDE! I quickly grabbed a large deli container and trapped it, sliding a piece of cardboard under it, and then I studied it for awhile. Then I took it outside and yeeted it into the far end of my yard. Fortunately it got the hint and hasn't come back.

    THANK YOU OMG
    I've been waiting for someone to point this out.
    I see WAY too many nature documentaries using scary music to portray arthropods (or predatory animals in general) that don't want anything to do with us 99% of the time. and it usually just paints a bad picture of these magnificent creatures.

      Nah, he exaggerates a lot of shit like the pain of the bite and sting episodes, those are clear as day over reactions, but I actually do believe he's genuinely afraid of centipedes. He did a video on Scolopendra heros long before he took a bite from one, and even then I could see legitimate fear in his face. He was vocal about his fear of them from the start and it's always remained consistent. The video being talked about here is an episode that came out after he had taken a bite from one, it isn't completely farfetched to assume that he'd be a little bit more comfortable with being around them after that. He did the same thing with the Bullet Ant, he took the sting from it and then put an episode out with him handling one.
      Plus, he wouldn't really gain anything from faking this fear anyway. With the bites and stings he knows that more dramatic reactions means more views, so he over reacts to them. That formula only works with the bite and sting episodes though.

    Having been bitten by a rattlesnake and pinched by a centipede( Scolopendra Spinosissma to be exact) I can certainly say that a rattlesnake bite is way worse and makes sense because rattlesnakes hunt larger prey and there fangs are capable of delivering a much higher dose of venom.

    • @BugsandBiology

    I think we all know Coyotes reactions to bites and stings are certainly exaggerated and hes quite aware that the centipede as well as other creatures hes has gone into the strike zone with are completely incapable of causing death, unless of course someone actually has an allergic reaction to them. A few creatures I can promise you he will never allow a bite from would be Funnel Webs, Wandering spiders, or Rattlesnakes.

    Despite Coyote Peterson claims to be wildlife educator, I think that he emphasizes the bite before everything due to the large amount of views that those sting/bite videos has given to him, as those were more entertaining for his viewers. Maybe he should have seen more as an entertainer rather than an educator, and well, at the same time there wouldn't be anything wrong with being an entertainer anyway.
    Apart from that, as this correction was quite informative, some people could've got misinformation from some things that Coyote Peterson mentioned. That is why it is important to get information from multiple different sources rather than just one, targeting the most trustworthy ones.
    It calls my attention that your video and your channel overall doesn't have as many viewers as I expected. I believe it deserves much more. I hope it grows much bigger in the future.

    Centipede bites do hurt (a lot!) and the discomfort can last for a few days. They do tend to bite when you accidentally step on them or corner them. In Hawaii they come into houses at night searching for beetles, scorpions and cockroaches. These beasts are also called Vietnamese centipedes and are often between 4 and 6 inches long. Take care to keep your bedding off the floor and make sure you don’t put your feet down without looking if you have to get up in the night! We spray Home Defense around all doors and windows every couple of months and even if they still get into the house they are already dying. BUT they can still bite!

    • @BugsandBiology

    I took a full envenomation by a huge rubripes which had my entire hand up to my wrist swell up to the size of blown up glove. the pain was horrendous. it burns and stings, but you definitely can cope with it if you aren't afraid of the animal. despite that my reaction was no where near as dramatic as the dude on the show. I think the way he over reacts to the bite is not helping people getting a real understanding of the animal at all and perpetuates the fear people have towards the animals.

    I think that Coyote's videos are a little dramatic. Mind you, I've never been bitten or stung by anything that Coyote has, except for a bee. So I'm not saying I can feel what he feels. But you and several other bug bite videos that I've seen all seem to show that while these bites can be bad, they are no where near as excruciating as Coyote makes them out to be. I would never want to purposely provoke one of these creatures to bite or sting me, and I certainly would not any as a pet. However, your videos and some others' videos have made me feel comfortable enough to know that if I ever saw any of these creatures in the wild, I would not be as afraif of them as I would have been before seeing them. So thank you for that.

    9:05 I think the reason he emphasizes the danger of the creatures he interacts with is because his target audience (and main audience) are children. Likely young children. If they see this guy making entertainment videos (which I agree are poorly-informed, frequently inaccurate, and less than educational overall) and handling these life forms with confidence, they could end up copying him and getting hurt.
    He's running a business, through and through...either they have to improve the integrity of the content and the format, or they have to make the entire thing a big fat disclaimer.
    That being said. I live in the Chihuahuan Desert, and on the off chance that one of these ends up in my house, all I care about is how bad it'll hurt if it gets me, how fast it can disappear, strike, coil itself around my hand if I try to capture it...They are indeed marvelous and terrific. I cannot afford the missed sleep and work or potential health threat (hey hey usa) that comes with that pinch.

    i actually suspect at least some his bite and sting reactions may be more reasonable than they seem for the simple reason he INTENTIONALLY gets stung, and in the process i think he almost always gets a significantly worse bite or sting than you would normally get. he often holds the animal tightly against his skin long after any normal person would have already reacted from the pain and stopped the bite or sting. i remember watching him literally rub a gympie gympie leaf into his skin when obviously in reality when you get stung by gympie gympie its just brushing against it. i think a couple of the problems with the video can probably be excused simply because these videos are very obviously for little kids but yeah many of these problems are very annoying and i wish he would do more of the things you say.

    I’m pretty sure that his reaction isn’t over hyped. I get that you also got bit by a centipede. I saw that video and that centipede didn’t even want to bite you.
    There’s a big difference between your domesticated centipede and a wild , aggressive, HUGE centipede that Coyote caught in the desert.
    That centipede was pissed by the time it finally bit him (twice)

    • @BugsandBiology
      @BugsandBiology  2 роки тому +1

      Domesticated centipedes don't exist. Domestication requires human intervention over many generations. My centipede was wild caught, and had never been touched by me before. I've also taken worse bites off camera that still didn't cause me to act like Peterson. Furthermore, there's bite reports from many species of centipedes on sites like Arachnoboards, including some much more venomous species, and none describe reactions like what Peterson appeared to be going through. Also there's no way to tell both bites he received were full envenomations, especially since it only held on properly for the second one; pedes commonly give one or more dry bites as "warnings", and I have taken several dry bites from wild centipedes too.

    • @skylorhamilton5936
      @skylorhamilton5936 2 роки тому

      @@BugsandBiology Point taken, I hesitated to use the word ‘domesticated.’
      Even so, that was one pissed of centipede and there was no hesitation from the centipede to deliver the bite after being caught, handled multiple times, and then kept in a glass enclosure over night.
      Maybe he was exaggerating but based on how calm your centipede was compared to the one Coyote caught, I am certain that it hurt pretty badly.

    • @BugsandBiology
      @BugsandBiology  2 роки тому +2

      I'm not denying it hurt (the swelling made it pretty clear it was a heavy envenomation) and if it were just the centipede bite that Peterson reacted in such a dramatic way to, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
      Thing is, it's not just the centipede. He has super dramatic reactions to pretty much everything, none of which line up with the reactions displayed by others who have been bitten/stung by the same animals.
