    I was thrilled to have my Salvia argentea bloom this year for the first time in the five or so years I've been growing it. I've waited so long to see those flowers. I'm trying to leave one plant behind to collect seed from.

      I wish I had thought to save that last plant for seed! Oh well, there’s always next year.

      The only thing that would make it better is if it was perennial!

    Nice video, thanks. I was away visiting family, just came back and it's really something to see when you haven't seen your gardens in a week. Big time Growth! Had to do some good soaking on some, lost a few to rabbits chomping and noticed some naughty squirrel play, but alls back together again and Ah-mazing!!

    Try Dried Molasses on your yard. The ants will leave. Just throw it around. Maybe 2 treatments.
    I was watching your video for information on taking cutting of the salvia argentea. I have 2 already in my garden. They are lovely. I remember reading that you can take cutting off a mature plantthe second year. I bought another large plant. Today I tried to take a cutting off a large leaf structure that was coming out. I am not happy with the looks of what I tried. I dipped the cutting in root hormone and place or pushed it into dirt. Seems like I always can take cuttings from every plant, but this particular plant is unusual. The article said you would be able to take cuttings the second year. I would sure like to hear if you attempt cuttings next year. Blessings with your plantings,

      Hi Carol, I’ve not taken any cuttings. Instead I start a few more from seed each year just to fill in where they don’t return.

    Lovely to have found your video as I bought 2 salvia argentea from the garden centre today without really knowing what I was getting. I liked the soft furry leaves. They felt like I was stroking my cat's ears! Unfortunately, I have clay soil and as I'm living in the "emerald isle" (Ireland) known for its wet climate, I'm now wondering if I should plant them in a pot seeing as you mention they favour drier conditions! I also noted you pulled yours out after they had flowered. I think you mentioned they are a biennial? Does this mean they have to be replanted every 2 year and are they easy to grow from seed? Great video. Thanks for sharing!

    • @heatherhereshegrows
      @heatherhereshegrows  3 роки тому

      Hello Marlen, thank you for watching. The leaves are wonderful and they can get quite large which I like too. I have clay soil too but it gets very dry on the south side of my home and really seems to thrive there. If you don’t have a spot like that, a pot may be best. It is a biennial here in my zone 5 climate. Last year I had big beautiful leaves and this year the flowers came. Honestly, I was surprised it returned to flower. As soon as it does, it becomes very tattered looking. I started several from seed indoors in late winter because I knew they’d need to be replanted whether they flowered or not.

      @@heatherhereshegrows Thanks for your reply. Glad to hear you succeeded in growing this plant in clay soil. While this gives me hope, I'm still left with the challenge of keeping the soil dry! You say the leaves are large. Would they be as large as say that of a rhubarb plant and how long do the flowers last? This will help me in finding the right size spot for it. All the best.

    • @heatherhereshegrows
      @heatherhereshegrows  3 роки тому

      @@MC-pg2ko sorry for the delay, Marlen. The leaves are definitely not as big as those of a rhubarb, maybe half the size or a little less and the flowers the following year get about 2.5 feet tall and can be rather floppy. Staking is a good idea.

      @@heatherhereshegrows Appreciate your reply. It's very windy where I am, so I have decided to give the plants away to a friend who will provide a more sheltered location and I can still admire them :) !

    Found this
    Another way to propagate your silver sage is with what are called “off-shoots”. In the second year, you will notice little plants that have sprouted around the outside of the main rosette of leaves. Once they have developed their own independent root systems, you can gently remove them and plant them for next year.
    Also found this and wondering if you saw this on your plant.
    I planted it in a sunny, fairly dry spot last year. I was happy to see it come back this spring. I let it go to seed. I was about to harvest the seed, when I noticed little fuzzy plantlets growing at the end of the seed stalks! I could find no mention of this possibility anywhere. I will let them grow for a while and then try to plant them.
    I am really confused now about where to find these cuttings. Thanks

    • @heatherhereshegrows
      @heatherhereshegrows  2 роки тому

      I’ve not noticed any little plantlets but am surprised that many of the plants that flowered last year have returned and leafed out beautifully. I’ll keep a closer eye on them now.

    What zone are you in? I live in Ohio and I just bought some of this because I’m trying to grow as many sages as possible, and I don’t think it can survive the winter, but I am wondering if I made cuttings if it would or if I should just start over. Also wondered if it could be brought in doors for the winter and if so, what it would need.
