I am picking this MOS after serving with the US Army 16 years and 3 Tours of the middles east. Two of them in Iraq as a rifleman. I am planning to have fun in this MOS and do my last 6 years to reach my twenty two years of Service and retire.
I'm 19 and I just enlisted for 15 tango national guard of maine. Took a tour of the Bangor base and hangers of the black hawks and I loved it. My dad and grandfather are pilots and emp mechanics so it gave me a good chance to look into this for the national guard.
While I may not being going in as a 15T, 15R is what i had my heart set on. But anything helicopters is enough for me! I can’t wait. I get shipped June 14th 2021 to Jackson. Never have I been this excited for something in my life!
Hey man just wondering if your still enjoying the mos and if your active duty or reserves. Thinking about re classing to this and was wondering if you could help me out with some info. Thanks
15T here i come! Ship out to basic in 2 days. Really hoping i get flight status and get to be a crew chief. Enlisting as an E3 and married. Hoping to get stationed in Alaska, but we will see where this journey takes me and my wife. Wish me luck!
Hey Daniel , im signing up for 15T active duty , do you know if theres a way to join a flight company later if i start on a non flight one? id love to be a crew chief eventually...
Holy crap, I rarely sat. I wore a body harness attached to a hard spot in the aircraft. Only flew with the doors closed in the coldest of times. A crew chief is supposed to learn land nav and how to read an aviation map. So while the pilots are flying I could tell them we got a tower and guidelines holding it up or power lines coming up and help ID them. Night flight was even more intense. I was constantly moving from side to side looking for anything. Fast movers, popped smoke, checking for main and tail rotor space while dropping into a hole in the trees or anything that would cause trouble of any kind. Meanwhile manning a door gun (M60-D's in my day) and glad to have someone on the other gun. Medevac must be a different mindset than moving beans, bullets and personnel around.
I’m a certified A&P and I think this is the coolest job in the world. Thinking about joining the air national guard near me for this MOS. How often do you deploy though ?
This is way late but i just got my 15T mos and ship out soon to basic, i plan on going to green platoon selection for SOAR (Special operations aviation regiment) im soooo excited!! Anyone have any advice for 15T or any experience in SOAR? I have a mentor in SOAR who absolutely loves it! Hes in intelligence in SOAR. Hes done alot and seen alot!
Ooh a Nightstalker I too want to go 15 after I do my first infantry contract. At least that’s my plan I test for 11B this coming Thursday. Beyond excited I’m ready to get screamed and chewed for that badge. I haven’t wanted anything so bad in my life
Have you been deployed yet being a crew chief in the reserves? Im stuck between doing the 15T route or the 15N route. Want to get into electricity but would love to fly. With this election, Ukraine, Israel, etc situations happening, it does make me weary to turn into Kobe
If I were to reclass to 15t or 15u as an e6 would I get a chance to do maintenance and crew chief or would I be stuck in an office or platoon sgt position?
@@keandremcmillan5964 Well, I guess you found out by now. Avionics guys are completely different from 15T. They usually work in a shop in the hangar. My good friend was in avionics, I'd keep in good spirits with the aviation related guys. Sheet metal, rotor repair, hydraulics repair. Make good friends with these guys if you are a Crew Chief. You will need them often. I always managed to get them some flight time to get them out of the hangar and in the air. Although, being in the 82nd Airborne Division at a time when you had to be Airborne qualified to be in the 82nd, they were no strangers to flying. They just exited the aircraft before it landed. Yuk, Yuk...
How do you get flight status and/or become a crew chief? Prior enlisted Marine, would be going in as E3/4 (pending my college graduation), Aviation Logistics background/MOS. Would be extremely interested in being crew chief. Are there certain requirements like PFT scores, testing scores, luck?? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated
Elizabeth Fundis Flight status really just depends on if your unit has vacancies in their flight companies. So when you get to your unit just express interest in flying and most of the time if you have a good PT score and show initiative they can get you into a flight company pretty quick. I’m a UH-60M Crew Chief at Fort Hood right now and I love everything about my job and like my NCO’s always tell me, this is the most fun you can have with your pants on lol.
@@gb60446 thanks for the information man! Definitely have a good PT score, I make sure I can meet male standards and I'll definitely make it known I want to fly!
Don't try to stop the tail rotor with your tongue. The torque will make the helicopter spin out of control. Just saying. But you can go back there and talk into it and sound like a robot.😅😂
Hey man I’m enlisting most likely as this mos but I’m not sure if I wanna do constant deployments is this something I should look into or do you deploy a lot as a 15T I can either work on the black hawks or the chinooks
i couldnt tell you how long it would take on the active duty side, on the reserve side as soon as i got back from ait i started my RL progression to be a crewchief.
That's very dependent on what type of company and where you get assigned. As a 15T, you can be sent to a line company, a Medivac (medical evacuation) company, or an AVIM maintenance company. A line company has your best chance to fly after proving yourself as a mechanic, I'd say, after a minimum of 18 months. Most Tango crewchiefs I've come across are E-4s, but that's not to say they didn't start crewing as E-3s. A medivac company is a lot smaller, so it might take longer to start crewing because the slots don't open up as quick. If you get assigned to an AVIM company, you wont fly at all since you are there to turn wrenches. AVIM flight crews are experienced mechanics and crewchiefs before they were assigned to an AVIM company, and pretty much all they do is maintenance test flights. The other consideration is the number of aviation units a base has overall. The bigger bases of the more well known divisions (82nd, 101st) have a buttload of aviation companies, and it decreases from there. As a 15T, you can go a lot of places because UH-60s are spread out all over the world.
@Daniel M I just enlisted in July, waiting to go back to meps to sign my permanent contract and pick my mos and unit, and I keep telling my recruiters I really wanna be a 15T or 15U crewchief. I’m over in PA so McGuire would be the closest base for me, not sure if they have any tho. So once I pick a unit what should I be careful of to make sure I’ll be a crewchief or will be able to fly on them? Thanks bro ! It means a lot because if there is a chance Id be a Crewchief than average repairer in the reserves!
I went straight to being a crewchief right out of AIT since im in the reserves. If you're in the guard and reserves, you're essentially guaranteed to fly unless you pick a slot in a Delta Company which is your maintenance co.
