I have been using my 20+ year old Spyderco Sharpmaker a lot in the last two years, as knife making is anew hobby for me. I get great results. I offered to sharpen my wife's best kitchen knife but she said it was sharp enough.mImtested it with the paper cut and all it did was push the paper out of the way! Fifteen minutes later it was shaving paper. I am not a pro by any means, but just making an attempt to sharpen a knife will improve its cutting edge. One of these days I may even try to get a new Spyderco, but mine has lasted all these years and works great. I am no good with a stone of any kind.

I agree completely. For me, the Spyderco Sharpmaker is absolutely adequate.

I enjoy getting a good edge and it's a bit relaxing.I've been looking at the Wicked Edge but have held off as it is expensive.
A sharp knife is a pleasure to use.

Well stated, a good edge is such a breeze to work with. It is a great feeling. I have to say that the Wicked Edge does a spectacular job getting your edge "right". However after that point I strongly prefer to touch up with a fine ceramic stone such as the ones on the Sharpmaker. take care my friend thank you for taking the time to watch

I just don't have the time or patience to get a knife or axe *shaving sharp*. As long as it passes the paper test its usually adequate for my needs. I have a variety of stones and strops, but I just cant sit for too long on a repetitive task.

Well don't forget its not all about the angle of the blade. A lot of it has to do with the angle grind. With something like a flat grind, you will get what is literally a razor edge ( flat grinds are used in old fashioned razors and current razors, etc). But if you have a saber, scandinavian, convex, etc., your knife might not become a razor, or at least not as fast. Personally, I either use legit Japanese water stones or I use rough-very fine grit files.I don't like pre-angled / choose an angle sharpening systems. Not as fun in my opinion

Well stated....I have most always used a moderately fine stone and a butchers steel and have been able to get shaving sharp with a little effort. I think steels are greatly underrated and don't get mentioned enough or maybe people haven't used them much. I am sure woodcarvers need a better edge but for most of the cutting tasks I do they work fine. Not always convenient to carry in the field though.

Great insight, I think that some people do much better with stones as opposed to guided sharpening systems. Through practice though, anyone can do it. take care and thanks for watching.
