I bought 2 of these based on reviews, one in the kitchen, one in the shop. Thanks for the very helpful "how to" video. And wow, I've never been very good at sharpening. I was able to get my orange buck 284 shaving sharp following your instructions. Now, with patience, I have lots of knives to sharpen. I'm hard on edges, so 20° is just fine.
I have had one of these for years. It is my favorite sharpener by far!
Something that i learned when using this is that i like to put erasers on my ceramic rods to get the metal off of it, i also like to put the plates through water to get the metal off as well from the plates. the goal here is to increase the lifespan of the plates by also maintaining it's ability to maximize the efficacy of sharpening. For those that havent cleaned their plates in a long while, use gentle dishsoap and a dollar toothbrush to brush along the plates to get all the metal shavings out of the diamond ridges. There is also an arrowhead holder behind the plates too, so you can lift the plates, put the arrowheads inside the slot, and then carefully sharpen. I need to get more compound to put on the strop but this is a nice video. thank you much!
That is a great tip! Thank you for sharing
Hi there, just a silly question, what temperature of the water?
@@ryankanters4385 warm is nice, not hot
I’ve been using rem oil wipes to clean my plates
Glad to see there's a bigger one, I'm a butcher and that sharpener looks nice and it's a great price. Thanks for the video and info
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very happy with most Work Sharp products.
Still wish they'd just offer this Field Sharpener with a 17° angle guide as well. One for the field with 20°, one for the kitchen with 17°. Would be all that most people need.
Theres a bigger version with different angles!
Name?@@The_Dude_420
@@The_Dude_420 can you link it?
I have a lot of different sharpening systems, most of them are from Worksharp, including Precision Adjust. But this one is one of the most versatile, it gives the easiest and fastest sharpening result for me.
Love it! 👍
I just bought one .I love it !!
Thx young man, I hope that I can do that as well. You make it look so easy, wish me luck.
Ok dud, just got mine and YES it works. Love it. One knife it took some time but RAZOR sharp. Buckaroos get this one. THANKS
Glad you found the video useful!
Good stuff. I have this one, but you still showed me something new... thanks for that.
Glad to help!
Thanks for this review. this is exactly what i've been looking for.
Glad it helped you my friend.
Great demo, thanks I got it at Blade Show so this really shows me how to use it
Glad I could help!
Just as you I have trie many sharpeners, but have finally settle on the tool you show here!
I have one and it works outstanding if you follow Matt’s instructions.
But for best results get a better leather strop for a better final edge. Great product.👍👍
Thank you for the kind words sir!
Was doing some research on sharpeners (top 10 lists) and the Work Sharp was on many of the lists. Came across this video and liked what I saw, especially the ease of use. Picked one up yesterday at Lowes $29 and just now sharpened two knives. Worked fantastic on both my Boker Drop Point Kalashnikov Auto and my CRKT Tanto LCK Linerlock!!! This video was clear and informative, thank you!!!
So glad you enjoyed it! Enjoy the new sharpener!
Dont forget the small ceramic portion for serrations. Also has 2 broadhead wrenches under the metal plates for tightening or removing broadhead arrowheads.
I do photography and am very very impressed with your camera work. The multiple angles to help show it from many views. I’ve only seen something this well with a videographer I follow. Good work. I came across this video because I have there kitchen version and wanted something to keep in my hunting bag.
Hey Jake! I appreciate the kind words. I am actually a videographer myself 😄. I think this would be amazing to keep in your hunting bag. I need to buy another to keep in my vehicle!
This is a great video. Thanks for the demo and showing how to properly sharpen a knife with this sharpener I am planning to buy one
I am glad you found it helpful!
I suck at sharpening knives, but i bought this sharpener a couple months ago and have had really good results. It really is worth every penny
i bought this recently and i can attest...works very well and produces a razor sharp edge. much better results than i was able to achieve with my lansky ceramic rod sharpener.
Work Sharp should have a link for this video on a QR code on the packaging. I’ve had mine for years and this video is better than anything they’ve put out themselves.
Wow, what a huge compliment. Thank you bro!
I use this as I am disabled and it is perfect for me and so easy to get to use.🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Dude, someone finally shows how it needs to be done in easy steps. So simple but if you've never done it, it's somewhat of a mystery ;) ... thanks.
Glad I could help!
Man i just used one of these. Going to buy one now especially since you reviewed it. 👍🏻👍🏻
It is an amazing little tool!
I have one….. works great!!!
Just bought one and used it on a small Victorinox kitchen knife that could barely cut a tomato. Even at 20 degrees, its cutting paper better than a Spyderco PM2 I just bought. This product is very well designed.
Like yourself I have bought many. So I am trying this one and just placed my order in. Will let ya know.
I guarantee you are going to love it!
thank you sir great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
What about the round rolling tumbler sharpeners with stones on either end that are advertised now. It seems useful in that they hold the knife at a constant angle with magnets.
What is your opinion of these sharpener systems?
Good video matt
Thank you, Austin!
@@CorneliusCreations your welcome !sorry for taking so long to get back to you I been frustrated with some of my new viewers so I took a brake from my comments and am now trying to plan a response video.
@@Hissatsu5 You are good my brother, It can happen to anybody!
Sharing now!
🤜🏻👍🏻 thank you brother!
Where do you get the replacement stones
Tip. The diamond surfaces, being magnetic, can be flipped over, thus protecting from dirt, etc. when transporting on camping/hunting trips, etc. I also find it's easier to hold the knife firmly by the handle and run the worksharp along the blade, rather than try to hold the worksharp by the end and run the blade along the abrasive surface. There just isn't enough to hold onto on the worksharp to keep it steady, and there are no tables out in the field to set it on anyway.
Where do u buy all the replacement sharpeners for this sharperner? please send me the link, thank you.
Does this work for ceramic knife as well?
i have 2 of theses they are one of the best mini sharpeners I have tried!
Would this work well with Swiss Army Knives? What about the Swiss Army Scissors?
Good field tool. Wish it had the reversable (20 degree to 17 degree) guides that the bench sharpener does.
Does it work on a chisel grind Karambit?
Can we us it on a rotary shaver or a razor?
Good video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is awesome. I've been looking for a way to get that kind of edge on knives. Definitely checking this out. Thanks brother
Glad you enjoyed it!
It is a good sharpener but it is not tenstrokes it's thirty strokes
@@keviningles5580Could be 50 strokes or 5. Depends on how dull knife is, how worn diamonds are, how much pressure you use. I keep all my knives very sharp so a few strokes would get mine back.
I love this sharpener, I use it all the time.. Best bucks I ever spent on a sharpener !
Very good video Matt! I have a Lansky kit but the one bad thing about it is that it isn't descriptive on what angles are at each hole nor what angles I should be using. Thanks!
I've used the lansky for a long time and It is decent, but I get way better results with this!
I have the same sharpener on the opening. 2 diamond surfaces, ceramic rod and leather strop. An all in one that works great.
And I am in Costa Rica.where much as this is hard to impossible to find.
I've had one for years. It's awesome!
Right on!
I agree 100%. Do not waste your money on small slide through knife sharpeners. For the price, this is the one to get, and it will be useful for all kitchen knives as well, including serrated bread knives that you can sharpen using the rotating white ceramic rod or the small rod on one side.
What about Serrated blades?
I love mine
👊🏻👍🏻
I love those! So much so, I bought two of them. I keep one in my backpack, and one in the jeep. I also got one of the WorkSharp Precision Sharpeners, and for $50 it can't be beat. It's definitely not the nicest sharpener in the world, but it is pretty amazing. I double-dog dare anyone to find a better value for the price. I REALLY want to try the upgrade kit for the precision sharpener. I hear it really completes the set for people addicted to blades.
Right on! You can never have too many sharpeners on hand!
Are these fine for kitchen knives? Or more for outdoor ones?
It will sharpen kitchen knives just fine. Knife is knife. :-)
Perfect for hunting / fishing trips.
Yes it is!
the secret to sharpening, hold the blade at the same angle on every stroke
Love mine. Best $30 I’ve ever spent!
Yes sir!
( I don't sharpen a knife, I just put a point on it, and it cuts real good ! And easy to do, but someone has show you !)
You should explain raising a burr.
Do you have to put a compound on the strop?
Yes, usually green rouge/stropping compound.
Havent had much luck with this sharpener or the Work Sharp Ken Onion!
Put a sharpie mark along the bevel and as you sharpen you will be able to see where you are removing metal. Keep going on coarse till you grind off all black marks. Then repeat on fine.
@@imgadgetmanjim Are you the kid in the video?
@@bobskaftfeld5611No.
Where can I buy that green rouge paste for my strop?
Amazon is probably the best place. Also, local jewlery stores will probably give you some if you ask.
What if you have a longer blade say five inches?
I know many people need help with sharpening...not everybody has the time to learn to freehand. But, it IS A SKILL that can be had with no fancy helpers. Or $$$
How do you clean and maintain this sharpener?
Sharpening stone can detach from the sharpener, you can wipe ceramic rod with cloth, with rotating. You will most likely not going to clean leather.
Get a Scandi knive and a cc4 fällkniven stone. Thats all you folks need
Get a blue paper steel Higonokami and a super fine ceramic rod. That's all you folks need 😉😊
@@jimmy66603 Sure. Try batoning with that little thing. Good luck
I have a simpler version of that sharpener.
It’s my favorite too.
That and the top of a car side window.
I’ve done that before as well!
Will the Knife Sharpener work on M4 Steel? Like at least bring a factory edge to scary sharp?
Yep.
My best friend dang near cut his finger off after sharpening his knives on this sharpener. After that I was sold. I bought two of them. One for my work bench, and one for my pack.
Is it ok to hone at 25° after sharpening at 20° i have ome of these but cannot seem to get a knife hair shaving sharp no doubt its my technique but eager to learn
Scrap my last comment I just tried it exactly as you showed and it does indeed shave thanks for the video
I find that if you hold the knife with your index finger on the side of the blade and your thumb on the top or bottom of the handle it will lock your wrist for more accurate repetitive strokes.
Can you use this on large kitchen knives?
Yes, absolutely. They make a bigger tabletop unit which would be better, but this still can work.
Does this also work for Karambit style blades?
I recommend a system like the Spyderco Sharpmaker for something like that to be honest. BUT, you might be able!
So if you’re using it on a blade for the second time instead of step 1 where do we start? Step 2? Just the strop?
The thing I like about this is I've been sharpening my knives on the bottom of a ceramic coffee cup going by to the sixties when my Mama taught me how.
Chef's Choice Model 130 for most work around shop. This looks good for field work.
Did he change knives?
Wait....was stage 3 course ceramic?
Not sure if his knife could have cut the paper at the beginning and he was pretending it doesn't cut 😂
Hahaha, I promise you it didn’t!
Can i get the link yo get new plates
Where to buy one?
They are posted in links above 👍🏻
so how do I know I have a burr. for that matter if I am new to this what is a burr? everyone talks about it,
😮
🙂
Sure wish these weren't unavailable now.
Just use the belts from that same brand.
Most efficientl way
Got one last week for $33.00. My one big complaint is that my knife was too sharp. I kid you not, a slight touch of the blade resulted in a deep cut.
Be careful kid, you shouldn't be playing with knives until you understand the damage they can do
It is a good product, mine just was made poorly, the coarse plat didn't last sharpening one small knife, the diamond dust literally peeled off wirh every pass of the blade. Hopefully work sharp only had a bad batch with mine.
Would be neat if you could swap in other angle guides
That’s a great idea
It's $30. They've got basic sharpening for most people down to a fairly easy operation. You can buy the guided systems and get the perfect angle you desire....
Hey you forgot the broadhead wrench under the diamond plates. This can really save your fingers, believe me.
I never sharpen fishhooks cause I lose them too fast.
Come to think of it, I *use* to be that way with pocket knives!
Maybe I *SHOULD* get a "Work Sharp..."
*smirk😏
I got one for about 2 years now. It's good. But I prefer my dmt diamond card stones. The corse side is really really very corse. And the ceramic rot and strop are little to small.
Good to know!
I thought the same w the super low grit on the course side... way to rough
What knife is that
That is the Cold Steel kitchen pairing knife
I need a 25° angle. This does not help me unless the angle can be changed.
چرادربازارموجودنیست این محصولات🤔؟
Doing it free hand like this, you can't get exact angles on the edge.
*knaffff*
I’m going to give you a dull m390 to sharpen. I’ll wait.
Haha, is it a Microtech?
Dremel not good for sharpening , too ?
Not for sharpening knives
it doesn't work on bowie knives. its really weird. it cuts through boxes, but it leaves tiny tears on the cardboard boxes when i slice into paper or anything like that.
I can promise you that I will be unable to sharpen my knifes on this device. I fought the battle for years of trying to “hold the same angle,” to no avail. Just because somebody in a video can do it is irrelevant. There are plenty of videos of people getting shaving quality edges with plain flat stones- doesn’t matter with me. My problems went away when I spent $25 on a Lansky set.
This is what I’m struggling with currently. I may have to give the Lansky a try.
@@damethepirate There are a number of brands out there now that do the same, i.e., control the edge angle of the blade. When I got my Lansky set, it was pretty much the only one out there- so shop around. I have the regular stones, and the set is priced pretty reasonably. Lansky also makes diamond stones now, but of course they’re pricier.
The problem we have is that you have to click on the video before you can comment on it, which is all they're after really.
my question is why do i found out about this now? after i bought a vulcanus sharpener for $100? gets the job done almost but cant slice paper like that
There are plenty of razor sharp convex edges
Actually magazine paper is easier to cut verses other types.
The main issue is the human hand keeping the same angle on the blade on the surface.
How to Sharpen neck
Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.
