- WW2 was a massive proving ground for all sorts of armoured vehicles. In any theatre of operations, the sky was ablaze with fire of countless tanks and artillery units. During that time, SPGs like the Soviet Su-152 or the German StuG earned their way into the pantheon of military history - and today we’re going to talk about the best postwar SPGs available in War Thunder: the French Foch, the Soviet Su-122-54 and other interesting vehicles.

they are essentially the same vehicle, yet only the Russian vehicle gets scouting and the French one doesn't.

not quite, the asu 57 uses aphe and is a tank destroyer, but the elc bis is in real life a light tank, that uses heat, but yeah, the elc should receive spotting capabilities

As a french main player the foch the ca lorraine and the arl 44 are some of my favourite veichles, I think is better to spawn the foch middle to late game tought beacuse you can avoid many bmps, marders and other ATGM veichles that generally spawn first and are already destroyed by the time you get there it reduces greatly the treats and makes your armor usefull.
As an Elc Bis main I can tell you Elc Bis is definitely more fun than LOL 44 and Fock, with its menacing gun and insane armor you pretty much win every round.
ARL-44 with the long canon is a railgun and I loved it.
I actually live near a military air to ground shooting ground (originaly used by Krupp to test artillery) and they actually had a couple of Kanonenjagtpanzer 4-5 that were apparently once used as training targets.
There's one in the National Armor and Cavalry Collection at Fort Benning, GA. I haven't been inside of it, but it looks to be in pretty decent shape on the outside.
The foch can literally bounce heat shells, it's that crazy.

I really prefer SPG, you can be more conscious of your vicinity without parasite movement of turret. For me Su 122 54 is my favourite.
Ok I've seen a lot of weird comments down there so here is the truth even if you don't believe it.
The ELC is a light airborne tank with a 360° rotating turret made to perform reconnaissance tasks and fight armour if needed with the 90mm gun. It was never meant to be used as a TD or to counter the IS-3, this was the job of the ARL 44 and the AMX 50.
The ELC has a lot of different variants including one with 6 recoiless 105mm guns but none were accepted into service because the military chose to go with the AML 90 because it could spot better than the ELC.
The ELC and AML were concurrent designs created by different companies but with the same objectives; recon and fight only as a last resort and the AML won the right to be produced because it fitted the requirements better.
You might not know or like it but these are the facts. If anyone has questions, I'll be happy to answer and if anyone has an objection to make, go ahead but please quote your sources.
i'd like a source since i really don't remember where i got the stuff i said from. although other than recon wasn't it also made for rapid redeployment against Heavy Armour?
@@vektorianwolf5827 Hello, if you speak French, visit the French wiki page of the ELC (the english one is also quite good but lacking some info), otherwise check the forums of the Saumur tank museum, they actually have one of the last ELC on display, if not the last.
I am affraid that a lot of sources will only be available in French however ...

@@vektorianwolf5827 Yes it is often a problem, I sometimes had to go and check the russian versions for some russian tanks because both French and English were too empty ...
Also check the ELC EVEN family, those were the ones designed for tank combat although they were abandonned because it wouldn't be effective. Some would be interesting in game though.

The ELC is definitely not good. Give it scouting and 360 degree traverse when stopped, and maybe we might get there.
And decrease the BR or give it back the armour it had on the test server. This tank can be mediocre in RB but it is completely worthless in AB
The tank is good, you’re just not good at playing it. Skill issue
ARL 44 is not a SPG. It's an Heavy Tank dedicated to Tank Hunting Role.

@@Pgb633 It was a light reconnaissance vehicle, not a TD. It is the same formula as the ERC 90 and the AML; a light tank with a big gun execpt this one is airborne
The ELC is not a TD it's a light tank...
it's intended use was Tank Destroyer, it was meant to be a counter for the IS lines

Completely true, survivability is close to 0 and the ammo never hits anything. And when it does hit you bounce or you slightly injure the commander while the shot landed perfectly on the gunner.

I struggle of using the ELC bis, due to the fact that the turret don't rotate 360 degrees and having only 2 men in the vehicle.

Not to mention that whenever you wanna attack targets of opportunity while on the move, you have to stop and wait for your tank to finish rocking up and down like a boat. It can also get penetrated by anything above 7.62mm from all sides.

Skill issue
Pls give back scouting for the JPz 4-5. Variants of it were used as artillery oberservers and its more than capable of the role as it is.
every time I use it I always end up clicking v to scout TwT
I am surprised the Object 120 didn’t make the list. 400+mm of pen with APFSDS at 7.3 is really good and will serve you well even into 9.0-10.0 range thanks to its very powerful gun.

On the honorable mentions list, you guys could have added the Jagdpanzer IV and the Hetzer (two of my favorite TD's in the game so i'm a bit biased). Those things can bounce a crazy amount of shots

are you planning to add the br of x.5?
from 1.5 up to 10.5, you could decompress the br system a lot. the vehicles could be better br'd and the matches would be fairer, because you wouldn't have to face vehicles +/-1.0 higher/lower br than yours. +/-0.5 or +/-0.7 would be enough.
btw, were the guys developing napalm bombs totally drunk? no damage, no spot marking, nothing... the most useless weapon in game... even more useless than the sneb rockets, the german 8.3 alouette II had, back then, with 3mm pen.

The conway APDS would have been way better than any other TD of the time at proper tank engagement distances. One shot would absolutely destroy any of the russian tanks it was designed to counter.
The best way to play the Conway is to load up HESH and play it like the FV4005. While it is a bit less... well, delete-y, it's reload is twice as fast, and in a good position you can get several kills
Where m56 though. It deserves a place in this video.

May I also point out that whilst the Hull Armour on the Conway is good, it is far from invulnerable. Avoid being shot in this (or the 4005 for that matter) as the armour will not stop a lot of rounds
Speaking of the FV4005, that thing is monstrous. A decent shot will knock out almost any tank. I've killed T-80Us in that thing

No, it is a spg, that's why it Doesnt have a fully traversable turret
The thing is it HAS a fully rotating turret. The only problem is that the driver is in it so you have to aim forward when you drive but otherwise it can totally rotate

Why was the ASU-85 not on the list. It is just a bigger ASU-57 and cannot get machine gunned and has a amazing APHECBC round with 240 mm of flat pen at 100m. It has amazing angled performance to.
The ww2 StuH 42 still manages to kill everything at its rank better than some of these vehicles tho😃
I did gave the top French TDs a chance , both got classified as "awful" do their solid-shot combined with poor rate of fire. Also I'd pick the SU-122-54 4/5 times over the 286; cuz simply its overall performance.

Playing the ELC boils down to 3 things : getting killed by machineguns, getting killed by sky cancers and hitting nothing because your HEAT round explodes in a bush/bamboo/tree …

I would say 6,3 and below anything with a 30mm cannon. If you have 140 ping or below and a good aim, you will be set. Your only worry is getting a good team. Remember the BR brackets and choose the best planes within them or you will face better bombers. Try a solid 5,0 lineup if you have it. Any two engine fighters are guaranteed to be your best planes to shoot down bombers unless you play Japan.

I play War Thunder on Xbox and am fairly new. I play on key board and mouse not on controller though. I hate the Xbox button interface in the main menu. So for example there is “x” under the the “To Battle” button which annoys me since I don’t play on controller. Just wanted to see if anyone knows how to fix this?

What makes an SPG with a fulling rotating turret an SPG and not a tank?
It's intended use, caliber of weapon, and what it does in the field. this is what i remember though. since in the end tanks would be divided to breakthrough tanks and infantry tanks, although these two classifications were made by the British to divide the class of tanks like Churchills(Infantry Tanks, as in tanks used for covering infantry) and Crusaders(Breakthrough Tanks as in they're made to breakthrough defensive lines with great speed and cause havoc in the rear)
Note: do not take this as a factual comment since i dont fully remember all the facts. this is more of a overview from memory. please do your own research and i apologize
@@vektorianwolf5827 No you right, it's first and foremost the intended use which is important. There isn't an objective line between tanks and SPGs and the SPG of someone could be the tank of an other, or something completely different because they don't want to call it tank, SPG...
It's like that with MANY military equipment, and especially with ships (Japan have destroyers which are aircraft carriers...)

I've destroyed an object 268 with puma from the from. Yes that puma from 2.7. you can easly trap shot this vechicle.

Fun fact. *smoothebore barrels, of which are required to fire HEAT-FS, CANNOT FIRE HESH WITHOUT BLOWING ITS BARREL OFF* You should fix that rather than just adding things for absolutely no reason.
After a short google search it turns out that smoothbore cannons can shoot HESH albeit with less accuracy while HEATFS can be shot from rifled cannons like the L7 used on Centurions Leopard 1's and M60's.

@@turklander69 But that's not really how it works, what class a vehicle categorizes as depends on how it's ment to be used in combat. And at least according to my previous teacher who was a captain at Swedens biggest tank regiment it's a tank destroyer, which is an SPG
