Ive painted a few thousand points this year to a reasonable standard. A few tips: 1. Not every miniature needs to be to the same standard. Of course, you can do everything to the same standard if that makes you happy and youre more into hobby/display, but it makes sense for your horde/battleline to be simpler to let your characters stand out. Uncle Adam has at least one video on this topic. 2. Set goals and track them. I keep spreadsheets of my unpainted models with points and factions. While eliminating your Pile of Shame is probably too big a goal, you can start with getting below X thousand points. Or you can set a goal like "paint X points in the faction for a list." By having SMART goals and tracking youll make more progress. 3. Set rules around buying more. My rules are basically: (a) you get $X per month to spend which rolls over, (b) I can't buy more if my Pile of Shame (POS) is over Y points (2k for me) and (c) I cant buy more of any faction if the POS for that specific faction is over Z points (1k for me). Hope these can help someone out there.
Painters block is my weakness as well. Everytime I paint I want to paint very well but if I make a mistake I feel less willing to continue for a while.
Yes, I own a LOT of models! I also paint a ton of them. Your last point is definitely the most important one on the list. You PAINt to a high quality, and I think that's important to remember.
My custom sm chapter has a different paint scheme for each company, so that’s 10 different schemes to choose from if I’m feeling inspired. I’ve painted 6 companies so far, so I’ve got 4 more left to play with. Really helps with burn out, and makes my army look more unique
Just getting started is my weakness. Like I get my brushes out and paint set up and then...do something else. I don't know why but...I just struggle to start and then stay focused.
4:20 it's a mixture between all three on the screen I find issues with time creativity, and which models to paint first not only that when I make a list, I paint minis that I want to play with first, I haven't been able to play in months because every time they make a points change. I have to get rid of a model that I've already painted in full detail and I have to paint another one that I haven't even started on because they change the points. I haven't played much of 10th edition because of this
I get painters block a lot more now. I do a unique paint job on each of my Tyranids models, and I call it a chameleon fleet because I didn't want to decide on a color scheme. Now it feels like I'm just spinning the color wheel and effects wheels because I've run out of good ideas and combinations
I feel this hard. At the moment I'm painting an Eldar army in Saim Hann scheme (because I have some older models from like 20 years ago painted like that) but I see other paint schemes where I think "damn this so so damn cool, I want that too!" and then I'm frustrated and don't paint further. Same goes for my Battletech minis, I have like ~100 mechs (because fomo, u don't want to miss boxes) to paint. How many are finished? 10... yes exactly ten, so still 90+ to paint and I hate myself for that.
My problem is how much there is to PAINt. First starting out, I got the introductory box. Then I thought it would be a good idea to buy larger numbers of space marines (anyone new to warhammer do not do this just build your army over time and it'll be a lot less overwhelming) so I bought what I could afford. With these prices I got a platoon of Space Marines which I decided to PAINt as Blood Angels. The introductory box only has paint for Ultramarines and Leviathan Tyranids so I need to rePAINt those Ultramarines. Then I gave into FOMO and now there's a Blood Angels FOMO box that will sit in my room until I actually get off my ass to do something "eventually"
My biggest issue used to be procrastination, gamkng instead of painting but I overcame that by putting my painting station next to my Xbox and now I'd say my biggest issue is consistency
i just started painting warhammer mini's. i did cars before and had paint left. so i painted my minis with some other paints than citadel. the molotow paints are decent but when you pour some paint let it sit for a minute or 3 because the paint is wet (for paper or cardboard graffiti) but cover decent. but black i would use citadel paint because the molotow has a marker glow wich does look cool from upclose but makes it difficult to paint the highlights becuase it shines a bit too much in bright light. and i like the gold and metal paints from tamiyo more than example the balthasar gold but those paints are really thick and needs to be thinned down a notch for delicate detailing
I overthink way too much...I am trying to let go of perfection, I want my minis for playing games, and now my son is a teen I don't want him or hubby to not use my models because they are worried about dropping them. I need to just get paint on them and go and have fun.
My favourite gold is Retributor Armour with Seraphim Sepia was. My favourite Bronze is Pro Arcyl Bronze. I need to try their gold and I’m sure I will stop using Retributor Armour
Got Tyranids Combat Patrol last Christmas. I’ve painted two minis this whole year. And I picked Kronos which is a total pain to paint. I think I’ve made a mistake with Tyranids and their color scheme.
Points 1) Oh Yep 2) Yep 3) Yep 4) ok on this 5) Oh yep One thing I have to say on this please don't let this all stop you painting, just paint it and enjoy. As stuff happens in life enjoy your hobby (for me this realisation came when i was diagnosed with really aggressive Cancer) PS love your grey marine what gold was that on that mini please
Honest answer: I have a very large pile of shame. What I really want from it, is assembled grey piles of plastic that fit the theme(s) of whatever manufacturer created it. What I’ve found out: I’m a really good painter, not great, but someone who pays decently good attention to detail, but only after those Basecoats are done. Looking back at what I accomplished in the last year: Sigvald, Vashtorr, and Lady of the Vines: I’m really good at painting medium base models (big things, but not the army’s centerpiece).
Painting is just difficult. That's the real reason. It's a chore. My paint scheme is 3 colors, only base layers and maybe metallics. No washes, no highlights, nothing. But trying to paint a battlesuit or a unit of infantry is a month long project. The smaller the detail the more time needs to be spent painfully trying to keep your brush steady and going over the same areas again and again. Or it's spending extra time painting in subassembly because painting the chest of someone holding a rifle is literally impossible but I can't have them with bare plastic chests.
So far in 2024 I've painted 1000 points of Iron Warriors The Death Company box set Two 1000 point Bolt Action Army's and a lot of random minis here and there. In all honestly I'm probably only happy with half of my Iron Warriors and my Death Company. The bolt action Armies I speed painted with over 60+ minis in each.
My main issue with the hobby is the space problem, like where else am I suppose to put my Space Marines, Adeptus Mechanicus, Word Bearers, Drukhari, Seraphon, Blades Of Khorne, Ossiarch Bonereapers, Orruk Warclans, Word Of Blake, Star Wars Legions Galactic Empire, Bolt Action Great Britain, and either Skaven, Dwarf or Bretonnia armys? Oh and all of my other models shit like Scale Models, Gunpla, and Transformers figures???
Ive been pretty good with panting my armys within past few years For example I've managed to repaint my dark angels army Which in total is roughly 6k of dark angels Ive also managed to paint a lot of my orks due to them not looking as good as i wanted them too But in past few months ive definitely felt and auffered from painters block
My friend runs a game store and GW paint sells like crazy. It is one of his top selling product and constantly ordering more paint every couple days. Within 6 months of bringing GW Paint into his store it had already paid for all paint he would order for the entire year and now has the entire GW paint line available. Im not saying that other brands don’t sell well, im sue they do but GW paint is a must have for game stores. It sell that well.
@@Handi_Crafts totally agree. I was not talking about quality just about it selling very well. It was not clear but I it was in reference to 2 Thin Coats being out of stock and GW being in stock. 2 Thin Coats also does not have the production capacity that GW has, so it is reasonable to assume that 2Thin Coats will be low on stock where GW won’t
I have the problem of my pile of shame growing faster than I can paint, like I've painted 9 tanks in 2 weeks and now branching to a 7.5K force ontop for a different army.
I am very proud u do not have a pile of shame, I came close to having one model that was gonna start it but I cannibalised it for kitbashing bits, I too am a very slow painter, took two weeks to paint a armoured sentinel. Last thing I wanted to say was I think GW paints get too much hate
my excise is that im a kitbasher and therfore i have NO PILE OF SHAME, also i have to high standsards because the worst thing you can do as a new painter is watch pros paint
I have always "cheated" a bit. My Line Troops are very sloppy upon closer Inspection (errors not corrected, some details not painted at all) but Character Models look exactly like the original. When I play somewhere I'm usually asked "May I touch the Character Model to take a closer look?" Nobody looks at the Standard Troops (luckily for me 😁)
My problem is to lear the rules. I have to drive 45 to 60 minutes to my next opoment. Soni don't play often and lear the rules solo is not so much fun. The good things is ( for now) I don't have a pile of shame. Al my models are ready or in the final stage that I'm in right now.
Buying too much stuff isn’t a problem for me. Games workshop has solved that problem long ago. “Let’s hype this product up, make 12 boxes worldwide, and charge a mortgage for them” lol
@@Handi_Crafts I still remember when I discovered warhammer and how awesome the lore and novels were. But when I got into the miniature side of the hobby I realized just how poor they were at handling it. They’re riding off the 40K IP universe, the only reason it works. Sigmar and old world is a good example of it backfiring, generally speaking.
Concerning cosistency... evne armies are inconsistent. They try hard to be, but they never will be 100% across the board. While fictional, Star Trek The Next Generation hows this with crew memebers in the backgroud still wearing older style uniforms from prior seasons/shows while on active duty. You paint scheme isn't inconsistant, it is just he MkIIC schem from X months/years ago from Division Y and blah blah blah.
Okay lets get to the point where I think you went the wrong direction in your painting journey. You mixed up army painting and display painting. While I can see the joy of painting a model to display standart, that is only worth for the few unique models. Applying it to an army is just a waste of time and leads to depression and burnout. To get stuff done, just cut back on detail painting for units. So my advice is: army painting for huge blobs of models that are all similar, display painting for special models only. That way I can crank out like 40 models a month.
To be honest the primaris marines look lame compared to the old hammer marines or even the ones 10 years ago. Also I call bullshit on the kill team pricing. Why the fuck is the core rulebook is still sold and not free?
Rule 1 is a first world/rich boy problem given how expensive this hobby is. I get it; the boxes at the store are alluring and I also get that urge to buy; but considering how many un assembled and painted models some of you guys seem to have it's getting ridiculous. You need to be taking the "shame" part of the joke a little more seriously. Someone of us can't even paint let alone play due to poverty and how bad the economy is. It's valid to complain about this in public because the poor state of the economy is everyone's fault so no one reading this comment is innocent of not contributing to the problem; ergo those of us have nots get irritated hearing about the rest of you complaining about having too many overpriced toys. I like over priced toys too, I'm not shaming you for that either; but keep that to yourself. It's a YOU problem
