Nah, not being a pro sports shooter (or a pro shooter of any kind). The 200-600 is appealing though. But I don't have a Sony camera...so, there's that.
i still dont know why people would get a fixed 600m . is the F4 really all that thse photographers want compared to the zoom version?

If the money was not an issue yes I would. But would get the 400 2.8 first as it would be a work lens. I shoot now with both the Sony and Nikon setup. I still use Nikon as I have a 300 2.8 and Sony doesn’t have their own 300 2.8 gmaster. So basically I pull out the Sony for red carpet, event portraits etc and Nikon for the sport and concerts from sound board area as I have the Nikon glsss.
Nikon only had a 200-500mm lens Jared. Check your facts. Sony is the first of the big three (Sony, Canon,Nikon) to have a native 200mm-600mm lens and the first one that is made for mirrorless also.
I would also go for the 200-600 lens. You don't always beed to be at 600mm,sometimes 400mm is tight enough.

When you review the 200-600, I would love to know how the sharpness compares to the Sony 100-400 GM. I am a bit concerned about the 200-600 just being a G. Thanks!
I have been debating for over a year to get a similar lens for my Sony A-mount (160-600). I rented it, loved it, and wish listed it. $1299.00 hasn't finished growing on my money tree for it yet. BUT, any day now! Anyway, I like the versatility of the range and would choose the 200-600 if I had an E-mount. And hey, if I somehow found the extra money, I might even throw in the prime 600... just because why not.
So if canon comes out with a full frame 4K camera this year. Should I get it? Or get a 6k or 8k camera from Sony or Nikon this summer?

I need the f/4 at 600mm cuz I'm doing Golden Hour Sunsets with Freaky-sized 900 lbs Grizzly Bears at the other end AND to make SURE that I INSTANTANEOUSLY see the sudden angry charge so I can leave and/or throw said $13,000 lens before I run like hell !!! That f/5.6 zoom would COST ME A DEAR 0.5 seconds of NOT being able see that fatal full frontal charge and barrage of angry bear teeth!!!!

I am getting the 200-600mm lens. Internal zoom and the 90 degrees turn are big deal to me. The price isn't outlandish either.

The big investment in these long teles is important for these companies. For example I have both the Canon 400 2.8 and the 800. The loot tied up in these lenses means it takes years to recoup the investment and once achieved I wouldn’t voluntarily go through that a second time. I would accept a less than perfect Canon mirrorless camera than go to a better camera from another manufacturer for pro work (adapters are fine for amateur work and some limited pro jobs, but too limited for the serious action jobs/sports etc. this means lock-in on systems. Sony will benefit from that in years to come as newly starting out photographers choose Sony at the beginning of their career, but when the investment grows across many years, it is not feasible to change brands every few years. Good for Canon right now, and in 10 years or so it will be equally good for Sony. Lock-in can be a very big deal. But those big teles are hugely valuable in getting the shots that others can’t get. I do shoot Sony, but just a few manual lenses for personal pleasure. For sports/equestrian jobs I reach for the Canon and will continue to do so because of the teles.
If money was no object I'd get both but money is an object so I'm very interested in the 200-600

1:00 well, if you shoot a video in 16:9 every 3:2 sensor will crop, i guess they mean that. Or a crop of 1,08x that the S1 has in some 4K mode might also be acceptable.
That's a cool thing to have two zoom rings but doesn't it kind of confuse the photographer in critical scenes like sports or shooting animals? May be takes a while to get used to it though.
Better add options than taking them away. Depending on the situation, one will always be easier to turn (ever tried it on the Nikon he just told us about again? ) and I think that's just fine. If both also have different sensitivities, you might be even more easily able to get the exact frame and focus you want without post cropping!

4:24 What if 400mm image is shot on 50 Megapixel Sensor and 600mm on 24 Megapixel, both at f4? Which one will be better? I mean 600mm lens will definitely be costlier (and bulkier) than 400mm. Will it be better to buy 50 Megapixel camera in the first place?
Now nikon needs to drop a D500 as a mirrorless, Im considering to change to Sony now, but it would cost me something like 4k€ to get the same Focal length lenses like i have for my Nikon.
Meaningful crop is I think 1.6x APS-C FoV crop + any other crop by the camera

There is a Sigma 150-600mm lens for about a $1K on B&H Photo. How bad does someone need an F4 lens. Obviously for the big time pro Sony's $13K 600mm f4 lens caters to pro sport or pro wildlife shooters. (the expensive lenses are often available for rental at a more reasonable cost).
jared, could you tell me what camera and lens are you using for the videos now? I remember it was the d 850 and a 50mm but I do not know if it stays, thanks for your great work

I am happy to see Sony offer these new lenses for their Sony Mirrorless community! Too bad the 200-600 is not an f/5.6 at the 600mm end, otherwise a nice combination of lenses.
@@dancos2002 I do wildlife and normally carry a 1.4 TC with me, autofocus gets a bit sketchy at 8.8.

Jared do you realize that Canon's 600mm f/4 L version 3 is only 10 grams heavier than this new entry from Sony? So the weight, per your statement about Canon's being so heavy, isn't really a factor unless you compare it to the version 2.
Just a minor correction, the latest Canon 600mm f/4 III is the same weight of the Sony one. BTW I also consider nude as Art, however I concurred with you that there is a very thin line between art and porn

While they complain about the suppression of art, what the protestors don’t address is the glaring sexism and sex-based discrimination. Question, why do companies make these super telephoto zoom lenses with variable apertures when they could make one with a fixed aperture? I assume cost is the answer, but any answer will suffice. Thanks.
The same reason they not only build TV-Cameras for filming and medium formats. It's all possible, cheap enough for the producers, but it won't make money if you can't afford it. A variable f stop is not only easier to manufacture, it's also waaay cheaper for the customers since not everyone has 14k to get the big opening on their lenses. Of course you can do it, but you will take out most of your target group just because you need to set the price so high, equally means that they won't make money if they don't sell more "downgraded" versions that everyone (or most) wants and more importantly CAN buy.
Because they are oriented to sports photographers: if you track down any major camera announcement from Canon and Nikon, they are always months before the Olympics where they show off the best of the best. Now there are some sports where a fixed focal length is not optimal, due to the fact that there are many subjects moving at different distances from the photographer. Hence the mega internal zoom and focus to achieve maximum reliability in harsh conditions, with a small sacrifice to make. After all these lenses won't be mounted on an entry level camera, for sure, rather the top of the line where ISO is not an issue at all. Nor the photographers are so obsessed with noise and ISO like beginners are.
Besides, I'm talking about the 200-600 that Sony launched and that also Canon has, but that cost an order of magnitude more than the ones offered by Tamron and Sigma.
Cost yes....it might cost 5x more if you would want a fixed aperture because you need much more glass

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony launched a new high end statement sports camera (above the A9) next year in time for the Tokyo Olympics designed to obliterate the Nikon D5 (and Canon equivalent). That would explain the 400mm f2.8 and the new 600mmf4 lenses

No. Just received the Canon 600mm 4.0 III with is simply mind blowing. And I paid 11800 USD here what is about 1200 USD below the price for the Sony 600mm 4.0 GM. The weight of both lenses is the same. Sorry, but it is hard to believe for me the Sony lens is optically better justifying a 1200 USD price delta.
well i guess if you want to use the a Sony a9 with a native 600 f4, you kind of need the sony lens.

The human body should not be censored. I feel this only leads to poor body image issues. We're largely exposed to pictures of "perfect" bodies which, of course are heavily edited.

I’m so glad I didn’t buy the 100-400 Sony when tossing between that and the 70-200. Would’ve been kicking myself right now if I had :D. Now if only I could squeeze another bazooka lens in my kit or budget 😂

if they create two pixels out of every three there would be 4% crop. That would likely be a non-meaningful crop.
This is more to compete with the D500 series. Sony doesn’t make anymore DSLRs.

Canon make strategic move to make more profit....Consumer have to buy what canon offer... Sony are Filling the Gap..... Minolta is in good Money hands .... Nikon I don't now Fuji and Panasonic are crazy and Fro is A good Photographer

how much more do you need? Canon has the biggest variety among the competitors for any price range. Not to mention Sigma, Tamron, Samyang etc.
