I photographed a leopard with the 18 - 135mm usm kit lens because I didn't have a longer lens with me. The 32 megapixels saved me from any major quality loss and I wasn't uncomfortable to crop in 400% like I was with my previous 1200d with its 18mp sensor. The 90D is the best camera for the price. Yes, I was hoping for a third generation 7D. This 90D still is absolutely awesome. Extremely versatile for both photo and video. I love the option of BOTH cropped and uncropped 1080 and 4K. If I'm doing a lot of video, I enjoy using a cage and a magnifying loupe eyecup for the rear LCD... better than any mirrorless EVF, and yet practically all of the mirrorless functionality in LiveView mode, too. One day, photographers who began on mirrorless are going to want to go back and experience the best that mirrored DSLRs had to offer. They're going to be looking at the 90D, the 5D Mark IV, the 6D Mark II and the 1D Marks II & III, each representing the very best -- and last -- of their respective classes.

Nice review and I can understand a lot of the mentioned points, but the cropping thing at 2:06 is not exactly right. Yes, of course the focal length gets multiplied by the crop factor which results in a 640 mm tele FF-equivalent, but the aperture has to be multiplied as well, which ultumately results in a 640 mm f9. That being said, it effects only the amount of depth of field, not the amount of light falling onto the sensor, so this part is always a bit tricky.
Spot on mate! What I didn’t communicate clearly was that with telephotos you get the law of compression which will help maintain the depth of field that most nature photographers want, even on a crop sensor body.
Spencer Lupul he nailed it on the head! Compression is the term used to describe how telephoto lenses pull the background closer to the subject (depending on distances). That’s exactly why you can sometimes get away with shooting f/9. Because of the rule however, simple math conversions won’t always be accurate to the number given depending on the focal range.
@@EEEBA1 When I was picking out a new DSLR for wildlife photography a couple of months ago, I had the same dilemma. For me, it was between the flagship crop sensor cameras for Canon and Nikon; the 90d and d500. After a lot of research, I found that the 90d had very little going for it compared to the nikon. The d500 shares its autofocus system with the d5, and its crazy quick and snappy. Also, even though the canon has a higher megapixel count, its noise performance is about 1-1.5 stops behind the nikon. You also get the full customization options within the menu that are only found in top of the line nikon cameras. To top it all off, the two cameras are in the same price range. Im not sure which camera models you are specifically looking at, but from everything I have gathered, nikon has done a fantastic job with all of their bodys, and has slightly edged canon out in recent years. With all that being said, you still can’t go wrong either way. All canon and nikon cameras are capable of taking great pictures if you use them correctly! Hope this helps!
@@andrewn.9072 Yes it does help. Thank you. My only reason I was thinking Canon is because of their lens availability but I'm sure Nikon is about the same in that department?! I used to shoot with Canon years ago (zero equipment left because I gave it all away in 2013). So I'm starting all over again. I'm interested mainly in wild life, action and micro photography. I always wanted a Nikon camera and this is my chance :)
@@EEEBA1 I would say that in general Canon and Nikon’s lens assortment are on the same level. Since I almost exclusively shoot wildlife, I found that Nikon had a few lens options which could not be matched by canon. The 300mm pf, 200-500mm f5.6, and 500mm pf are all kind of in a class of their own. I currently use the 200-500 for my telephoto needs, and I have been thrilled with its performance, especially considering it’s price. I dont think you need to worry too much about lenses anyways; theres certainly a good enough selection for every style of photography. Nikon makes some great gear, so I think you’ll be happy with whatever you choose. Have fun!!
@@donr.wetter186 can you elaborate on those changes from the 70D and are they positive or negative changes in your experience? I also have the 70D and thinking about getting 90D. Gracias por compartir tu experiencia usando esta cámara. Para mí está cámara fue la última obra maestra de Canon empleando tecnología DSLR con sensor APS C. Saludos desde México.
I purchased it when it was released. Absolutely love the camera except for one thing, the low light capability. Other than that small thing it's a beast of a camera. Great video.
It's weather sealed too! Oh man. I recently got an m50 because I haven't done any photography since my AE-1 film camera. Yes I'm not young. My brain is young but my body needs more TLC than it used to. I wanted to see if I could regain my photography passion without risking too much cash. It didn't take more than a few days to know that I was in love again. The m50 is incredible for the money and just is excellent. But I want better and make the m50 my backup video camera. I am so excited. I feel like a kid who just learned to ride a bike and wants a motor cycle but daddy won't buy me one. Great video. Keep em coming.
when i was young i learned to shoot on my Dad"s Pentax K1000, but didn't keep it up. a couple of years ago i got the Canon 90D to get back into photography as an amateur and it's been great! walking around with the Canon 24mm f2.8 macro lens is a tonne of fun. nice review, thank you
Hey guys and gals, thanks so much for all the positive feedback and vibes. Just wanted to clear a few things up! Made a mistake, canon has a 1.6x crop factor, turning a 400mm into a 640mm... my bad! To those saying that the aperture gets multiplied yes that’s true, but it’s not as simple with telephotos. Telephoto lenses also use the law of compression. It’s a bit different from smaller focal lengths, calculation works but you will still be able to get desirable depth of field IF YOU ARE AT A HIGH FOCAL RANGE (meaning a f/5.6 won’t look like an f/9 when you shoot at 400mm because it will effectively be at 640mm). Of course you’re going to get more bokeh out of a full frame, but one should consider other factors! Hope this helps!
It doesn't effect the light coming in itll be a f5.6 still with bokeh looking more like an f8 but itll definitely depend highly on how close you are too your subject. If you're going for enviro portraits then itll look like the f8 when getting the trees and possibly lakes in there with the animals, however when filling the frame it should still blow the background out pretty decently
MrLogandm yes agreed! What people forget is that using a 640mm will blow out the backgrounds much more than a 400mm at the same distance based on the laws of compression. People get so hung up that aperture is the soul cause for blown out backgrounds, but like most things, it’s a combo of different factors.
I am very much considering getting a used 90D body to upgrade from my ol Rebel T5i. Thanks for the detailed review and you snapped some gorgeous pics with it!
@@JustMeow22 put 1.8 50mm on crop and then 1.8 80mm on FF and you will get different results. on FF even if it's same aperture, it will be much brighter.
I've had my 90d since mid march . Then here in the uk we went into lockdown. I had a few regrets and wasn't sure I had done the right thing buying it . I have quite bad immunity issues . So initially I wasn't supposed to even go outside . As was told do not go outside . But I thought I can't stay in 24/7 . So started going just into our garden . I've been doing a side by side with my 60d and 760d . Had so much fun doing that . Anyhoo I've gradually learnt what a fantastic camera the 90d is . Shot so many subjects and not joking here . Our dogs . Insects . Flowers . My partner Samantha . Even planes deployed from the USA here . Got a few shots of the U2 on permanent detachment . . Also a squadron of B52 bombers here on exercise here at the mo . But the main thing is I'm having fun and have rediscovered my photo mojo . Great video . Thanks to UA-cam I've learnt even more about photography.
I was debating whether to buy the 90D or not.. I am basically a beginner in photography and video but your video sealed the deal for me. I just purchased the 90D and I would like to know which 400mm lens you had in your video .. Your video is great ! Clear, thorough, exciting and I can see you love what you are doing. This wasn't some boring, unplanned informational video. I will definitely be watching future videos.
As good as the 90D is, Canon should have made a Mark III version of the 7D, which would have even better performance than the 90D, and slightly larger and more robust body. Even the current 7D II (which is 5 years older) than the 90D has more useful features than the 90D, in the areas that count, when out in the field (such as better autofocusing, larger buffer size, better weather sealing, and a much longer expected shutter life). Basically the 7D II is a scaled-down version of theh 1DX in many ways.
I think your assessment is mostly on for the .01% of the professional photographers, for ~90% of the users, the 90D is superior. It has pretty good focus system through the view finder, not as good as the 7DII's awesome system, but the 90D also have excellent live view capability, with dual pixel autofocus, and touch screen, IMO selecting focus points on the touch screen is far quicker than selecting using the joystick. And shooting videos on the 90D is pretty nice. While the shutter on to 90D is "ONLY" rated for 100,000K cycles, "just" 50% of the 7DII's, I've never even taken 20,000 photos on ANY camera, and I used to shoot quite a bit a few years ago, far more then anyone else I knew that wasn't a full-time professional photographer, so the additional available cycles would simply be more capacity 90+% of the users will never use. And the 90D will buffer 27 shots in RAW, only 3 less than the 7DII. BTW, I think 27 (2.7 sec bursts) is plenty for sports, plenty to capture the entire basketball shooting sequence, the drive to the basket, and plenty to capture the bat swing, or the slide to base.
@@stanimal8 Actually the price difference between the 2 cameras was not all that much (a few hundred dollars). It's not like the big price gap when compared to a 5D. By the way, I own a 7D (first version), bought new, and I've surpassed 200,000 shutter clicks with that camera. (the shutter on this model is rated at 150k) .Still works fine.
IV had the 90D for about 8 months, I love it. I was almost getting sucked into upgrading to an EOS R, the 90D really is a great camera and you just cemented that in my mind now! I'm looking into buying my first good quality lens, I've had the 20d and the 60D but only ever used the kit lens.
I'm glad this guy came out with this video unfortunately everybody wants to talk about the expensive stuff , expensive stuff overheats and will cost you a nice chunk of change. . . This is an amazing all around camera and it is on my hit list .
I understand that but several big time UA-camrs have said they're not happy with how fast it overheats those are people who use cameras constantly . . . Just saying i don't think its worth the money
@@justingreene9724 That's because they don't know any better. These are still photography cameras that can take video. They have limitations. Just use them within their parameters, and there won't be any issues. After all, you wouldn't expect to go around a curve at 1g in a Honda Civic would you? Do you complain to Honda when it fails? If you want/need more performance you buy a Corvette. Boom! Now you've got your 1g.
I understand your point but you should look up some of Potato jet UA-cam channel this guy has thousands of dollars in Canon cameras and hes talking about switching to Sony I'm just saying that's a bad sign
640mm tbe. 😉😉 And that 32mp gives about 40% more cropping flexibility than say 70D and 7Dm2's 20MP. Freaking awesome. Plus it has 28 focusing points if you wanna use an 1.4x with that 400mm f5.6 at f8.
To get the reach like the 90D has with a FF camera, lens would cost you a fortune. Also with that processor and 32.5 MP, shooting in RAW creates amazing photos.
Just discovered you, 1st time viewer. Loved your to the point review, currently saving up to buy this camera!! Great wildlife shots mate, love your work 🔥👍
My dad got me this as an upgrade from the EOS Rebel T7 and man it's quite the upgrade. I'm enjoying learning how to use it better. I just need some more lenses. The kit lens is not awesome and my 50mm became an 80 with this crop sensor.
The only issue i see with this 📸 is the auto focus system it ain't up to fast moving subjects, why didn't they just put the 7d mii focus system in it then it would be a full frame killer, iam tempted to buy it though but that focus system is holding me back, how do you find it for birds in flight etc? Thanks Adrian
Hey Adrian, sorry for the delay. For birds in flight, when you use the right lens it works great. It doesn’t do as well as the newer bodies (say mirrorless options like the R6) but I’ve still gotten some great shots of birds in motion.
Hey. Superb video. Just ordered this camer. Upgrading from the 2000D but I am keeping my current EF 75 to 300 Zoom Lens & EFS 18 - 55, and EF 50mm. Will these still work ok for wildlife, or is there a longer lense you would recommend please?
I want to buy a new Canon-camera: after 7 years with the 650. That was a good camera. But Canon had the time to make these even more better. I saw the 90D and I was supprised from the reviews. But the "new generation" mirror-less from Canon, the EOS R and the other ones, is amazing too. Now I have to make a choice between the 90D or de EOS R. Do you think that the quality is almost the same. Only the EOS R makes no noise for nature-pictures or weddings. How "bad" is de 90D with the noise you make. I suppose it's possible to put the mirror in the camera open: especially when you make pictures in dark with a shootingtime for several seconds on a stativ of course. I am 60 years old and I live in Holland. My English is not perfect. But I need your opinion between the choice: 90D or de EOS R. Which is the best for pictures because I don't make a lot of video's. Or do you have suggestions for other UA-cam-reviews?
Hmmm it depends on what the camera will be primarily used for. I prefer the 90D for wildlife photography but you’ll get better results for weddings and portraits with the R because it’s full frame
Dont waste your money on the entry eos r, go straight for the eos R5 instead. The eos r was mainly a test camera so canon could get real world customer feedback, the R5 is an amazing machine, better than the r6 imo.
@@stripes_in_raw Technically the focal length doesn't change either but when you either crop your full frame image or fit a lens to a cropped sensor your field of view narrows and the light collected is only 39% of the full frame so effectively you get more reach and much less light which is why low light performance is much worse for an equivalent crop sensor camera. I love my 7dii and EF100-400ii but I'm not kidding myself that I'm losing low light performance at the same time as I'm gaining reach.
@@noelchignell1048 Yes Mainly more pixels on the subject. Exposure ISO value remains same. Newer APSC bodies like D500 have excellent noise performance even comparable to earlier full frame bodies. If you use a good body it's mostly a gain.
I love my 90D. 32.5 beautiful megapixels. 4k video. Can take EF and EF-S lenses. It's well worth the money. I have a 5D mark III and still love it too. But the 90D is my go to camera now.
4 роки тому+1
Crop in with 4k does mostly Canon and Nikon.. a6100 is kind of inexpensive camera and does not crop in 4k. Panasonic g80/90 or 85/95 crops just a little. They are on sale often.. still 90D and M6 mark 2 are the better choises in Canon range
Canon 90D or M6 mark ii?? 🤔 they both have 33 megapixel right? I’d go with the 90D because it’s a bigger body but I would go with the m6ii because it’s mirrorless amongst other things lol
I've been eyeing this camera for it's feature. Would you recommend this for wedding photography or is there any camera with this price range for wedding events? Thanks!
Bought one purely for the 1.6 crop factor. Wasn't sure about it esp in low light, but to be fair, it is a pretty impressive with fast focus and great burst mode. Is it as good as full frame? depends, but in good light I'd say so, low light? sadly no but other than that, a great camera a tilt screen is a huge bonus.
I mean, the 90D is basically a jacked up version of the 80D, but that does not take away from the fact that the 80D is still a fantastic camera. If you're on a budget, then a used 80D would probably do better for your wallet, but if you believe the 90D would be better for you and you have the funds, you should probably go for that.
Awesome video bro! I just bought the 90D as I already have the 70D and I shot my 1st party with it last night. I've also done some wildlife photography taking pics of Bald Eagles as I rented the Canon 800mm lens with a 1.4TC too. That was a lot of fun...heavy as hell, but got some GREAT pics! Thanks for the cool video...keep up the good work! :)
But some people said that the 90D doesn’t have a real 4k quality. And i don’t know if that’s right or not? Because if it’s not shooting videos with 4k of course i’ll not buy it .
Nearly all of these midrange DSLR’s and Mirrorless cameras have pixel-binned 4K. The “crop mode” on this 90D has more detail and less compressed pixel binning, if that’s something you need. The heavier quality 4K comes when it is recorded externally. It outputs at 10-bit 4-2-2 resolution.
Looking to get this as an upgrade to my moms old Nikon D5100 I've been using and damn you made some amazing points why this camera is perfect for what I want. Amazing video!

He is right on that one. I’m not sure about the law of compression you mention. But no worries, on its own, a 640mm f9 is is just fine!
That camera is unbeatable. The dream of any photographer.
Is it still good in May of 2021?
I'm trying to decide between this and Nikon. Thank you.
Have fun!!
I'm on 70D since 2014. I love how they didnt change that much on the outside
love my 70d , real workhorse it is
I have both and they actually changed more than you’d think
I have the 77D, the 90D will be a purchase after my photography land cruiser is on my drive. I won't be going full frame in any hurry.
@@donr.wetter186 can you elaborate on those changes from the 70D and are they positive or negative changes in your experience? I also have the 70D and thinking about getting 90D. Finally got this ordered after a month of being out of stock. I’m going from a Rebel T6 to this so I feel like it’ll be a substantial upgrade.
I’m so glad to hear this! I have a T6 which has been a great camera, but soon I’ll be upgrading to a 90D. 👍🏾
I too have this camera, kinda proud that the first one ever in the Buffalo NY area. I also have the BG-E14, the 100-400 II, Tamron 150-600 and the Sigma 18-35 1.8. This was an amazing purchase I treasure. I also have the 80d as my backup. The end of the crop sensor DSLR as we know it.
Sweet!!
Thanks Thomas
I bought the Canon 90 D about a year and a half ago after watching your video and still loving it .
I upgraded from a t3i and wish I had done a bit more research... no doubt it's a beast but Im Struggling with portraits on this guy...
Hey man keep up the good work, you're very good in front of a camera and know what you're talking about, keep the enthusiasm and your channel will grow!
I’ve seen so many UA-cam just talk and talk and talk … but you my friend, you show and tell !!! Great video
I have the 77D, it's been a lovely camera to use. The 90D will be the next purchase in the canon family. Thanks for a great review.
4:09 lol i thought its a still image XD
You are absolutely right and it is a lot of fun listening to you. I use the 90d for optimal videos.
Thanks for the review. I have only had the 90D a few months but am enjoying it so far.
Glad you’re enjoying it!
Thanks. I am considering this camera right now.
2:16 wrong. On a crop sensor, you also need to multiply the aperture by the crop factor (1.6). This is to account for the sensor size
I just got this camera from Milford Photo! I did mention that you recommended them, they were thankful!
Really glad to hear that!
After jumping to FF, I do feel APS-C is the best middle ground for sensor size. 4/3 is never wide enough (x2) and FF cost too much to get long reach.
4:35 I like the satisfying clanking sound in DSLRs
It's weather sealed too! Oh man. I recently got an m50 because I haven't done any photography since my AE-1 film camera. Yes I'm not young. My brain is young but my body needs more TLC than it used to. I wanted to see if I could regain my photography passion without risking too much cash. It didn't take more than a few days to know that I was in love again. The m50 is incredible for the money and just is excellent. But I want better and make the m50 my backup video camera. I am so excited. I feel like a kid who just learned to ride a bike and wants a motor cycle but daddy won't buy me one. Great video. Keep em coming.
when i was young i learned to shoot on my Dad"s Pentax K1000, but didn't keep it up. a couple of years ago i got the Canon 90D to get back into photography as an amateur and it's been great! walking around with the Canon 24mm f2.8 macro lens is a tonne of fun. nice review, thank you
The x1.6 crop factor doesn't only apply to the focal length but the aperture as well so that would be a 600mm f9 2:09
Thank you for all the info. I am purchasing the 90D, thanks to you.
Respectfully disagree! This information is incorrect.
Hi Spencer, would you mind telling me why you disagree? Maybe I can clear things up or cite sources.
Jeffrey Tong doesn’t look like your link is working, regardless this is 300mm not 640mm :)
I am very much considering getting a used 90D body to upgrade from my ol Rebel T5i. Thanks for the detailed review and you snapped some gorgeous pics with it!
90D is my dream camera im saving up for what battery grip is that?
It’s the Canon Original Battery Grip For Canon 70D, 80D & 90D
@@adizTrainspotting cheers
@@adizTrainspotting is that ordered separately?
2:00 if you put 400mm 5.6 on crop it will be 640mm and F8.96.
You change the aperture if you want the same amount of blur background, then it would be f8.96. But if you set it to f5.6 it is still f5.6
That’s awesome!!

I have been using the 90D for almost 2 years now, and I love it!
Just ordered mine after watching your review. Thank you. I’m doing portraits
Agreed . This bad boy is a beast . Amazing camera.
I know I’m 1 year late, but if you somehow never found out, it’s the 100-400 mm L II lens
Thanks for review - ended up buying a 90D and very happy. Cheers
@@bulletproofkarma9480 I actually sold my 90D and got the R last year. Now I want the R6
I'm glad this guy came out with this video unfortunately everybody wants to talk about the expensive stuff , expensive stuff overheats and will cost you a nice chunk of change. . . This is an amazing all around camera and it is on my hit list .
ALL cameras can overheat once you past their limit. The expensive one just have a much higher threshold.
Just sold my 7D for the 90D. I just when from 18MP camera to 32MP. Can't wait to try it out.
I don't dare going out of home without my 90D ... is THAT good.
Mine is coming this week , finally !!!! I have the 70/200 2.8 mark 3 , and it’s coming with an 18/135
640mm tbe. 😉😉
And that 32mp gives about 40% more cropping flexibility than say 70D and 7Dm2's 20MP. Freaking awesome. Plus it has 28 focusing points if you wanna use an 1.4x with that 400mm f5.6 at f8.
So true!
Canon cameras are 1.6x. which makes it 640mm f9
To get the reach like the 90D has with a FF camera, lens would cost you a fortune. Also with that processor and 32.5 MP, shooting in RAW creates amazing photos.

My dad got me this as an upgrade from the EOS Rebel T7 and man it's quite the upgrade. I'm enjoying learning how to use it better. I just need some more lenses. The kit lens is not awesome and my 50mm became an 80 with this crop sensor.
I’ve been trying to decide between a rebel and this for my first camera and I want something I can grow into great review 🔥
I've got the 90D it's amazing!
Nice review young man. Clear, concise and entertaining. Keep up the good work.
What camera and lense did you use to shoot this video? Great video
Hey. Superb video. Just ordered this camer. Upgrading from the 2000D but I am keeping my current EF 75 to 300 Zoom Lens & EFS 18 - 55, and EF 50mm. Will these still work ok for wildlife, or is there a longer lense you would recommend please?
I wish I didn’t watch this video...I have an 80d and have no need to upgrade, but now I want to!
You should see the difference in noise going from the 80D to 90D it's a big difference for the better!
The 1.6x crop makes your 400mm FF lens into the FF equivalent of a 640mm f/9 not a 600mm f/5.6
Your exposure doesn't change, only the depth of field changes. So technically its still at f5.6
Great I’m looking at picking this camera from canon refurbished dept. this week 👍🏻
I love my 90D. 32.5 beautiful megapixels. 4k video. Can take EF and EF-S lenses. It's well worth the money. I have a 5D mark III and still love it too. But the 90D is my go to camera now.
Would you say the 90D is a worthy upgrade from the T8i?
I've been eyeing this camera for it's feature. Would you recommend this for wedding photography or is there any camera with this price range for wedding events? Thanks!
Bought one purely for the 1.6 crop factor. Wasn't sure about it esp in low light, but to be fair, it is a pretty impressive with fast focus and great burst mode. Is it as good as full frame? depends, but in good light I'd say so, low light? sadly no but other than that, a great camera a tilt screen is a huge bonus.
I just got this camera with a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 lens for work. I shoot stuff like marathons and such. Can't wait until I get the chance to use it.
Great to hear!
Would you consider the 90D a much better camera than the 80D?
I’m on a budget lol.
I have all STM lenses. 10-18 50 18-55
18-135 55-250
I mean, the 90D is basically a jacked up version of the 80D, but that does not take away from the fact that the 80D is still a fantastic camera. If you're on a budget, then a used 80D would probably do better for your wallet, but if you believe the 90D would be better for you and you have the funds, you should probably go for that.
I have two 90D but what is best overall lens? I have lens by Canon 50 mm 10-18 mm , two 18-135 and 70-200 but what is better lens,?
Awesome video bro! I just bought the 90D as I already have the 70D and I shot my 1st party with it last night. I've also done some wildlife photography taking pics of Bald Eagles as I rented the Canon 800mm lens with a 1.4TC too. That was a lot of fun...heavy as hell, but got some GREAT pics! Thanks for the cool video...keep up the good work! :)
I moved from Canon to Nikon...................... and............I rrrrRRReeeEEEgret it!!!!
Sheeesh!!!!
I love canon 90d..I am planing to buy it with canon 70 to 300 mm usm 2 lens
It sealed the deal for me - I will retire my old 2009 7D and ordered a 90D, it should be 83Ds better than the my 7D at least.
