AC-Surge Protection Devices. What Types are there, what else to consider?

  • Hi, in this video I am replacing my SPD which had been installed not to long ago in the MDB by another more suitable one. What all needs to be considered when buying a SPD?

    Thanks Roland good video. I am an electronics engineer so some of these things like type 1 &2 SPD's I am not aware of the differences. I need to look at this for our house in Yasothon which has no protection.

    Hey Roland - I have one of those Blue inverters - I've seen it lose PLL lock a couple of times on the bench (external power glitch).... it recovered but made noises in process. My homemade smart-meter PLL also lost lock - I just happened to be looking at the 50Hz trace at the time during bench testing. These inverters are such low impedance when running that correct PLL lock is critical for them not blowing up.
    I've elected to put a third party auto disconnect device if mains goes outside parameters that then resets a short while later once things have cleared - lookup "voltage monitoring relay". My guess is the inverter will take some out of lock abuse for a short period but the time is limited and the relay reduces opportunity for that happening - effectively bringing the inverter back to a slow ramp-up state. Great channel by the way!

      Hi Steve. Thats a very good input about the SUN inverters and loss of AC lock. I unfortunately here do have these buzzing transformer fuses every once in a while. Sometimes when it gets to bad, my grid-tied inverters will loose lock.
      This also happened this summer when I was not home and it stayed unstable like that for quite some time. So that situation could if you are right as well have killed my inverters :(
      The SUN inverters unfortunately restart very quickly when they think they got a hold on the AC again. Typical grid-tied inverters would time-out for at least a minute if not required even longer.
      I have not started to clean the transformer fused by myself. Not waiting for the utility anymore ;), but still, mostly we have problems during rainy season, and that's the time I am away.
      A Q-Relay would be a good idea. Hmm, wondering where I could get them...

      I can't remember my exact one, but something like ATO SVR1000 [youtube deletes links]. Agree on timeout - SUN seems to re-grab mains too quickly after disruption. There might be some faster relays out there. Hope idea helps@@RolandW_DIYEnergyandMore

    Hallo Roland,
    Schau dir mal die Video usw. von Dehn hierzu an, die haben mir auch schon sehr geholfen.
    Gerade wenn die SPD nicht optimal eingebaut werden sind sie in der Wirkung nicht effektiv.

    Nice Video !! I had an issue with the neutral line (carbon on the pole outside my house) which resulted in a high voltage ( 440v I think ) in my house. A lot of equipment which was not protected got burned up. Can the SPD protect from this kind of voltage issues ?

      Hi, SPDs alone will not be able to protect you in that case as they will as well burn up after some time, but there are inexpensive voltage monitoring relays which would disconnect you if such out of limit voltages persist for a longer period of time.
      So a combination of both, might have saved your appliances.
