- After our disastrous first attempt at sailing, we have decided to go back and show the world that we can in fact do it.
Here is our second sailing experience with many disasters along the way.

I’ve been sailing since I was age 10. Each time you go out, you learn a little bit more. It is a game of mistakes and micro disasters. Keep going!

Harry and his Dad are the cutest things since sliced bread.
I experience contradictions watching this.
Discouraging me from sailing yet ultimately encouraged.
Giving me spontaneous nightmares yet also fuelling my dreams.
Shaking my head at their joking around making cups of tea yet admiring their tenacity.
They're still using that tiny little plastic outboard engine...It looks great for a dinghy, I'm surprised it can push this boat along. Hats off! I'm subbed.
Harry, treasure the time spent with your father, learning how to sail. To make your chore, raising the mainsail a little easier, always turn the boat head to wind, release the mainsheet so that the boom is loose (Do Not hold the boom, while this is happening), then raise the sail, making sure that the main halyard is tensioned, after you have completely raised the sail to its maximum, so as to take out those scalloping bulges between slides. Would also suggest lubing the slides with something like a silicon spray. Hope that this helps.

The reason you are having so much trouble getting the mainsail up is that it isn't actually meant to be rolled around the boom for storage, but only for shortening sail when you're getting overpowered. You'll find it a lot easier to raise that main if, at the end of the day, you simply flake the main on the boom (or take it off entirely and re-rig it next time you go). It's a 20 odd foot boat - you should NOT be exhausted after raising the main :)
Also, when you are raising the main, make sure you are head to wind and that your dad releases the main sheet entirely. You never got the main all the way up which is part of why you were so overpowered in the puffs. with the main sheet off, you can get the luff a lot tighter, *then* pull the mainsheet on. If the boom is under tension, you'll never get the sail all the way up.
Do you think these clowns know how to flake a main? I don't, I only foresee disaster.

I have sailed around the world 3 times solo and I have to say you two crack me up! I'm all about just go do it frame of mind! You can be my crew anytime!
Your jib furler had "riding turns" in it. When you are letting the jib out, keep tension on the furling line so that it winds neatly on to the drum.
A couple more things: always head into the wind and luff (let out sails, both of them) when you are trying to take a sail in. Take the load off that sail. Next, if you feel like you are heeling too much for your comfort level, just let the sail out a bit. Finally, remember: in a pinch, “tiller towards trouble” ... and get an instructor. You are likely to damage something learning on the fly like this. Just get some lessons!
Greatly enjoyed your two videos. You are very good at the commentary, and the choice of music was equally particularly when things were getting a bit 'ropey'! Personally it's not the way to be introduced to sailing, but you and your dad managed ...., somehow! We all started somewhere so good luck. BTW - Your starboard jib sheet was led incorrectly in that it would rip off your stanchion. The port one was rigged fine.

Just had to subscribe to see how you get on. Got to give you 10 out of 10 for enthusiasm and perseverance........ I’ll leave the criticisms to others. But a very enjoyable video and just love that Father/Son relationship. 😀👍
And the electric motor is unsuitable, you will not be able to make way against a current or strong wind. Unless you can always relay on a safety boat, replace it with a 4-8hp gas (petrol) engine.
To be doing that and having some close calls with your dad, its priceless.

When you tack, keep the tiller over until the bow has fully moved through the wind and on to the other tack. As that happens, get the sail in quickly on the other side. That keeps your momentum going. Your dad is not keeping the tiller over long enough, so you are stalling mid tack. Good luck! Just get a few lessons from an instructor onboard. That will be money so well spent.
Try tightening up the main halyard and the main outhaul, they look very loose, Also you can put the mainsail slugs in the mast before you hoist.
Harry, for one who didn't have a clou as to sailing, you convey your expereinces and learning points really good. I like your honest, poised respectful way of describing mishaps and near misses. And out it came a warm and lovely father and son experience. I am instant fan and will come back for more sailing videos in future. Give your dad a big hug!
5.7 knots!!! WooHoo - you chaps are proper sailors now!! After a cuppa the most important tool to have on deck is a sharp knife.
FFS wear lifejackets. Sooner or later one of you is going in and there's no way you have enough control over that boat to effect a man overboard procedure. GET SOME INSTRUCTION before something awful happens and this UA-cam series comes to a sudden halt.
Entertaining video BUT Please Please Please take an experienced sailor out with you for a few hours to learn some of the basics. Safety first. E.G...1) when raising the sails head the boat into wind, 2) before you leave the quayside/pontoon ensure everything in the saloon is stowed and secure, 3) Have/arrange radio comms with one of rescue boats if possible, 4) Do the RYA 'competent crew' course and after more experience the the RYA Day Skipper course.

Great start ! It’s a nice little boat.
Practice reefing. Wind 1/3 of the front sail onto the roller reefing foil and take 1/3 of the mainsail down onto the boom. Make sure that the mainsail has all the bagginess pulled out. Go on a dinghy sailing course for a week - like a wayfarer. Then come back and see how much better you sail your Hurley.
Try sailing on just the head sail for a while and don’t have the main up, get some practice that way first, the boat will still heel but you will have more control as you can furl when needed

it is very easy to sit back and offer advice at this point in time!!!!!!!!!! But, you frightened me.......Join the saling club and get some lessons before someone get injured.....
Good job you are on a lake, we started in the Med and got in a storm on our first day, nightmare. 13 years later we are more experienced and the enjoyment grows when you are not so nervous. Great video, brings back memories.👍

In the midst of all that tension and you still managed to turn off the kettle once it started whistling. Prodigious.

Nice electrical upgrades. And the "igus" track for the cables from the solar panel on the main hatch is quite brilliant.

Good on you for getting out there and going for it! Couple of things, your mainsail should have been a LOT tighter, that would have helped in the gusts as it wouldn't have caught the wind so much. I've no experience of 'boom roller reefing' but I'm sure there is a knack to make getting the main up easier, making sure you stay pointing into wind will help. When we started, we spent a LOT of time watching hundreds of videos and learnt a huge amount. Every sailor of every calibre gets it wrong, a jammed line or whatever at some point. I'm sure you will get some negative feedback, don't take it personally, just keep getting out there on the water, each trip you will learn something and enjoy the time learning together!

Look into heaving to which is really useful if you need to deal with anything unforeseen.
If the boat is heeling too far bring in some sail.

Love yer dad keeps his cool the only thing is the ol sod all he wants to know is how fast she's going. Start out next trip put a reef in the mainsail (make it smaller. Think of your sails as gears start in 1st then let more sail out to be in 2 be year) remember lass Brittania rules the waves! Cheers n beers Marty Australia

It is great fun to watch this - because as an experienced sailer, you are not aware about how many things can go wrong if you do not know what you are doing. 😄I am watching you raising the mainsail at 2:30, right at the moment and wonder why you did not attach the sail when you were still moored. Then you only have to pull the halyard to raise sail...
"I was finished." The long side of the mainsail of my Hunter 340 is 13,40m, the bottom 4,90m... 😉

Oh dear. What would you do in a man overboard situation? That's a primary rehearsal - usually done with a fender. Throw it over board and retrieve it. If you can't handle that maneuvre you are sailing with your lifes at stake.
Before you continue your tours with this lovely boat, you should get some professional sailing experiense from a sailing school!!!
On both trips you also had too rough weather for amateures. Please allways check out the weather before sailing out - and don't go sailing with winds more than 6 sek/m untill you are experienced.

I enjoy watching sailing on UA-cam, but don't subscribe to many (there is so much!). I hit the subscribe button less than 5 mins in, your fun style is just unique please keep posting your progress. At last I've found another trailer sailor that has a little less experience than me! There are some good tips in the comments below, but just trying a couple each time will soon head you in a more comfortable direction.

Hurley is a really nice boat in my opinion. Mine was a bit rough coz some guy before me had painted it with a brush… but this twin keel setup is perfect. Very nice and stable

Love your sailing videos and can see ourselves in this. Our first yacht was a 21ft Newbridge and like you had no experience. We made pretty much the same mistakes particularly the jamming of the jib furling line. We now sail a 33ft yacht on open water having completed our RYA day skipper and love every minute of sailing. Keep the videos coming please

I really enjoyed this video. When I started out it was in a much simpler boat and so I knew the basics before I tried to sail a larger boat with both a main and a jib. That mainsail would be easier to raise if it were not all wrapped around the boom. You might unwrap it before trying to raise it. On a boat this size, once you start raising the mainsail it should only take a few seconds and you should be able to raise it just by pulling on the halyard by hand. Also, the sail will perform much better if you raise it all the way. The forward edge of the sail (the "luff") should be taught. Also, the roller furling of the jib at the front will be less likely to jam if you keep some light tension on the furling line when you are unrolling the sail. It probably jammed because the sail went out very fast with no tension on the line. So glad you get to sail with your Dad. Some of my best memories of sailing were with my Dad.
