    I was born and raised here. There is a good and bad side to Kitchener, both. The realities of the city are there is a considerable amount of homeless, the employment market and it's average income has decreased truly in recent years, in comparison to the 70's and 80's when it was quite easy in the city to afford housing. Being so close to Toronto the housing market has escalated to an almost unmanageable plight of working your body and soul to an endless grind to just afford a roof over your head. The local government thinks it knows more than its voters unfortunately and things like the rail transit system is evidence. Rarely used and overly paid for. The taxes keep going up but the roads are getting worse in most circumstances. The cemeteries are full and filling much quicker during covid. Lockdowns and life during the Covid19 crisis have caused many lost businesses to go bankrupt and close. It's not all as peachy as it's made out to be in this video of course and the realities aren't as simple as one major fix and it will be good again, like in the past. It was ONCE a GREAT city, but it has changed drastically in many circumstances. The crime rates have risen drastically, there are shootings now when once that was never heard of. So it's not all peaches and cream. Although I wish it was once, like it was, it has changed drastically over the years. The good part about the city is there are still lots of good people around. Although many have gone West in recent years....about half still stick around and try to make the best of harder times.

      I grew up on Young st., right across from Hibner park, in the 80s (born 75) What an awesome time that was to be a kid. The KPL, Queen st. park, St. Marys (where I went to elementary school), downtown, the train tracks all that area was my stomping ground. Kids just went where they wanted then. Ahh man...Flynn`s, Zappers, corner stores. The Capitol, the Lyric, the Highland $2 Tuesday at the Fredrick mall....the downstairs one on the corner of King and College. When the Oktoberfest parade wasn`t just a long commercial and Eugene Levy and John Candy would show up at the Valhalla Inn where the parents got drunk and us kids played hotel hide n` seek. Homemade Halloween costumes and pillow bags of candy. Christmas shopping at Eaton`s and the King Centre. And yes, good jobs and decent housing for the many. I`m rambling nostolgic because I have been in Tokyo since 98, I go back a bit for the Summers (pre-covid) and I am shocked by the urban sprawl, R1 residential zoning, box malls, and the house prices...jeepers!?! My mid-life crisis doesn`t involve any sportscars but a yearning to go back to those years and a regret that I should have appreciated and enjoyed how truly good those days were. Like they say, you can never go back and youth is wasted on the young.

    • @GreyBeatle
      @GreyBeatle 2 роки тому +2

      @@ninjacrumbs Well, I don't recognize the name Ninja Crumb, but all of our generation remembers John Candy running around town as a staple at Octoberfest of course. Probably our most famous parade Marshal. The Valhalla Inn is no longer the Valhalla of course but still is a hotel at least. Zappers was every kids favorite, and the ringing of quarters dropping into machines still sticks with our generation. Something newer generations don't even understand. The unity amongst the people then was far greater and in high school days student strikes over legitimate issues weren't unheard of. People had a real sense of right and wrong and often you'd back friends if they made a stand against it. Or at least supported them, even if you didn't always agree with them 100%. Times change and I get longing for the past at times, but I also hope we can make it better in the future. Sadly, it may be time for me to move on, and try a different location, and try and make a new home for myself, as most of my ties to Kitchener are dwindling. Funnily enough, you living in Japan, I feel that companies that moved in like Toyota, have been part of the downfall of the area with their contract hiring, and twiddling away at what was a standard of Canadian ethics. You tried to obey the laws, ethics and norms of the nations, only challenging what was wrong, not being unethical. It seems the standard here now is, that unethical is the modern norm, and you should just accept it. The city has changed for sure. But so has the whole nation, and I don't feel it's exactly headed in the direction it was meant to. If I could bring back the 70's, 80's, and even the 90's in this city, and we could do things over, I think we could have maintained it better, but alas the days are done. You don't see smiles on the faces, or joy over new water parks opening, as disposable income is a thing of the past. The once fair-priced markets are breeding grounds for price gouging your neighbors, and the streets have become single lanes from double to make way for light rail trains, that most don't want to ride on in the first place. It's a laughable time, and a bit of a social experiment now, by the looks of the city. Toronto has moved in, in droves, and the violence we would have stood against in unity at one time seems to breed. If you find a city ever in your travels, that is half as good as it was in Kitchener during that time, you let me know, and I'll consider moving there.

I’ve also net nice, hard working white people and honestly I can say all of this about all races. Skin colour has nothing to do with how one should be treated or how they should be judged. Judge then, since as humans we all judge, by their character and morals. Wish we could end racism and let everyone feel welcome. I have lived in K-W my whole life, and in my experience there is nothing remarkable about it. It is no better or worse then most other medium sized North American cities. The Pros, It's got good universities and colleges, pretty strong medical, tech, and business sectors, It's a great place for nature lovers, lots of parks, trails, and community gardens. Lots of cultural and music festivals are held here, Octoberfest, Ribfest, the blues festival, jazz festivals etc. it's got great farmer's markets, Lots of places for live theater, A nice ski resort, lots of museums and art galleries, water parks etc. It's a good place to raise a family because there is so much family friendly stuff to do here.
    Now onto the Cons
    The night life is a joke. There are barely any clubs here. restaurants close early. While public transportation within city is decent.. (not terrible but it could be better) Intercity service is not good at all. If you want to travel to another city and don't have a car, good luck. Go transit service is lousy. and thanks to the greyhound closure, express service to toronto is gone. If you don't have a car, K-W can feel very isolated. The weather here is also worse, because we are further inland, If its not snowing here it is probably raining. It is always going to be colder and wetter here compared to Toronto. The cost of living here has also gone up so anyone who says K-W has more affordable rent or real estate is lying to you. Crime has also gone up in recent years as well According to Numbeo, crime here is the highest it has ever been. Homelessness has more then tripled over the last 4 years. The downtown core of Kitchener is getting better... but still lagging behind other cities. No, K-W is not the Silicon Valley of Canada, yes it has a decent tech sector, but it is nowhere near the level of Silicon Valley. There isn't a city in Canada that has the same level of engineers, investment and innovation as Silicon Valley. K-W is not this amazing metropolis this guy in the video is making it out to be. Not at all. As someone who actually lives here. I can tell you it's a pretty mediocre city.

      You sound like you missed the years when it did have a huge nightlife. It actually did.... Lulu's was great, always live bands that were actually popular bands to the then longest bar then turn largest bar in Kitchener. Smoking bans came in and people refused to go out. Part of the unity of the city is if the Government messes with them they just retreat to their homes and have smaller get together. It costs hard-earned money to go out for the people to profit. The city wasn't willing to work with bar owners, and many closed at that time because of the smoking ban. Things couldn't get repaired from that point truly. Many just moved their bars elsewhere that didn't have the bans or wouldn't enforce them at the time. Lots of drinking and driving charges to partygoers for literally having two beers by the police helped to contribute to it as well. The laws were changing, and it was always Government trying to figure out ways to profiteer off people having fun, so people rebelled against it and just had parties in neighbourhoods instead. Bars and back sheds were converted into private get-together spots where people could get together in smaller groups. Just like in Covid19 when people were having bonfires in back yards with lawn chairs. Of course the Government found a way to fine that, nearly $1700. That is their game they're trying to make money off people for anything they can find......Can't talk to each other .....there is a crisis....we'll fine you for talking during the crisis.....because they didn't want people to organize against them. Well they didn't stop the truckers......thank god for them, because the doctors, the lawyers, the police, the firefighters, the education system, all the unions, all stood on the side of the finers this time.....Chiefs of Police that we pay for agreed with fining citizens who pay them $1700 fines for stopping to talk while walking their dogs. This is the kind of feel good crap that was released to make us think it's STILL A GREAT PLACE is all this was...more propaganda. I have lived in this city since 1974, and understand that same Chief who was forcing vaccines on the people that he was in charge of wasn't from here. He moved in from a Bilingual area and helped to enforce crazy rules. The only ones who stood against it that I saw in groups were the Men from the Legion stood against them all at the remembrance day ceremonies making a strong statement to all those politicians who showed up. They remember health is your responsibility, not the responsibility of the Government to dictate what is healthy for you and enforce it with fines. I didn't see those police there fining the legionnaires. If they did it would've caused to much controversy so they let that one go. Good for them I say. I cheered them on as they did it. Sad this city has turned out to not have enough people standing up against the crazy. But there were a heck of a lot that stood on those overpasses waving flags at truckers and protesters and hats off to all of them but it took two years of nonsense to drive truckers to hit a boiling point. Sometimes the responsibility people are given is blatantly abused, and it was in this city for sure.

      @@GreyBeatle Yeah, i know there was a time where Kitchener had a great night life. but it was all before my time unfortunetly. my cousins who are all baby boomers talk about how great Kitchener "use" to be.
      Most of these propoganda videos talking about how great Kitchener is are made by people who never actually lived there.
      I do notice even today many of my neighbours just have parties in their backyard and have bonfires, play music, and drink it's always a lot of fun and I go as well because they invite me. I actually have more fun there then I would in some dive bar.
