- Easy Red Lentil Recipes Indian Style - Red Lentil Curry Dahl - Masoor Dal Recipe
Lentils commonly known as dal in India is a staple food used as side with rice or roti. For me dahl is the ultimate comfort food. There are I think countless variations for making dal depending on the region, availability of ingredients and of course family traditions. But amongst all there are 2 components that are always followed in making it - one is cooking the lentils till they are tender and two is tempering it with your choice of spices.

Ingredients required for making red lentil dahl -
Jeera (cumin seed )Dal -
* For cooking the lentils - Red Lentils (Masoor Dal) - 1/3 rd of a cup. Add 1/4 th teaspoon of turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon grated ginger & 1 chopped green chilli (optional), salt - half teaspoon, 2 cups water. Add hot water if required while boiling dal.
* Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
* dry red chilli - 1 (optional). You can even use red chili flakes.
* coriander leaves (cilantro) as desired

Tomato Dal -
* red lentil dal (masoor dal) - 1/3rd of a cup. Use same proportion of ginger, turmeric powder and salt as given above.
* jeera (cumin seeds) - 1/4th teaspoon
* chopped onion (1/2 a cup)
* tomatoes - 2 medium. Use ripe red tomatoes
* brown sugar - 1 teaspoon. Can even use jaggery, cane sugar or white sugar
* Red chili powder/cayenne pepper/paprika - 1/4 th teaspoon
* For tempering - 1/4 th teaspoon brown mustard seeds, red chili powder - 1/4 th teaspoon, coriander leaves ( cilantro) - 1 tablespoon chopped
If you want to make all these 3 recipes in one go like me then here is the proportion for red lentils -
* 1 cup of red lentils, 1 tablespoon ginger, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder, chopped green chilies as desired. Cooked dal stays good in the fridge for 3 to 4 days or you can even freeze it. Cook the onions till golden brown if you want to freeze the tomato dal.
Pressure Cooker Method - Wash and add the lentils in your pressure cooker (regular/electric).Add 2 cups of water, turmeric powder, salt and a drop of oil (to prevent foaming). Let it come to full pressure on high heat (for regular pressure cooker), then reduce the heat to low and pressure cook for 10 minutes. If electric, set time as 10 minutes. After 10 mins let all the pressure release naturally before opening the lid.
Serve any of these dals with rice, roti or toasted bread with any vegetable curry (link given below).

These are real classics that are super tasty and that I make again and again. 👌🙂🥰Super easy and super tasty! Highly recommended for all!👌👌👌
I am so very happy to hear that.
We really enjoyed this. I tripled the dal and intended to make each recipe but I ran out of time and just made the cumin one. I was going to freeze some but it was so good we had it for two dinners and lunch and it's gone. I topped it with caramelized onions and DH was very pleased. I'm looking forward to trying all your vegan recipes and converting all the other ones to vegan as I'm able.
I've found a lot of websites and channels on Indian cooking but yours is the best. Your directions are straightforward and easy to follow and you take the time to put everything in the description-that's very helpful. It's very much appreciated.
Thanks for your very beautiful comment. Your comments inspire me so much and I am glad you found this channel. Thank You Diane 🙏🏾
Not only were the receipes delicious but I really loved your sense of humour "no we are not doing burnt Dahl today" 🤣👍.

I made the garlic dahl and also added garam masala to finish off. It was delicious and rated 10/10 in my household. I really appreciate the ease of making these dahl recipes and look forward to making the other variations. Thank you. PS. Comment has been made several times on your soothing, lovely tone of voice. :)
Thanks for your feedback. I am glad you like the recipes
Great clip, Bumbi. Sometimes people in Europe etc make dal to thick, like a porridge or worse. It should be like yours, almost like a soup and even mashed. That is how I remember it from south India and that is how I cook dal since then. The little masoor dal brothers are in my kitchen two times a week :-) Thank you. Bumbis with Curry rule!
This channel is amazing. Any dal i have made i simply boil. One time, I over-boiled them very badly. Instead of throwing them out I strained them, added cumin and pepper. It was a very aromatic and pleasing dip in this way
Wow nice recipe didi and nice sharing

Wow, my favourite!

Brown sugar and jaggery... Makes me feel so good!😊
It's that time again Bumbi. My favourite day of the week. I made the Tomato dal. It was so easy to make and tastes amazing. I have become completely addicted to dal now. (recipe 36) Thank you xxx
And my favorite day of the week as well as I know dear Emily's feedback will pop up on my screen. You are such a wonderful person. Take good care of your health and have a great weekend with your lovely family.
Hi Bumbi. Very good simple ways to make dal. One tip I now use before cooking any dal is to boil in plain water to remove scum which helps prevent uric acid.
This was exactly the video I was hoping to find, to help me make an authentic Indian red dal tonight! Yum! I wasn't sure how much water to use, because your recipe doesn't say. I used 1 C dry lentils and 4 C water. I think next time I might use a little less water. I made the cumin dal, with coconut oil. My boyfriend says, "These lentils are really [bleeped] good!"
Hi M.Stiles I am so glad you tried out my recipe and made your boyfriend happy 😃. I write all the ingredient proportions in the description box. I have given the proportion for lentil to dal as 1/3rd cup of red lentils to 2 cups of hot water. This is to start with but keep some hot water ready ( if not using pressure cooker) and add it if you see dal is getting too thick. The consistency depends upon your liking so keep that hot water handy and add according to your preference.
Please do try out the other 2 dals as well. I am sure you will like them. I have whole playlist on dal and beans on my channel page, so please check that out if you are interested. Thanks a lot for your time in leaving a comment 🙏🏾

Another amazing recipe! I love things like this - a basic idea with twists! Made mine in three instant pot. Simple. And was patient with the onions. SO TASTY! This is definitely going into the rotation. 😋
And kudos for doing it all yourself Bumbi! You are a rock star!
Thanks for your feedback
Hello Madame 🤩 👌🙏 NAMASTE
Thank ❤❤ you for sharing your knowledge . We are use to very dense dal , I usually mix some corn sturch , we eat it with rice . Recently
my wife has bought an Indian made personal pressure cooker , one is black ( it took me hours to clean inside in order to get rid of smell of camphor , then cook for 2
that's all I could cook in it ) but the shiny one it can also work on those wave heat which it cause me bad headache . It is fun to cook with . I am going to try your style see how is it . Lamb meat are so expensive . We use to have lumb all the time which it was $ 3.95 per lb , not anymore ,$ 11.95 per lb .Thank you 🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤
A lovely and quick late dinner. I made garlic dal using fresh scapes in the tadka. I have never seen an Indian recipe using garlic scapes but I have dozens of them and I think that this must be authentic? Thank you!
Though not that common but you can definitely use them.
Dear Bumbi. Just a quick thank you. I just made the tomato dhal for my lunch. It tasted a million times better than what I was expecting. I'll will make again for sure. Maybe try the garlic dhal next time. All the best to you.
I am so glad you liked it. Thanks for your feedback.
yummy and tasty
Thanks 🙏🏽
Nowwwwww 😁😁😁😁👍thatssss what I’m talking about,,,,,SLOW COOKING,,,,, it MATTERS!🙏🏻😁😁😁😁
good recipe
Thanks a lot for leaving a comment. 🙏🏽
Thanks❤
I always cook dal in pressure cooker. 😊🙏
I used to use the stove top but an becoming a fan of the instant pot... No more pot watching, clean up is easy (no more stove top spills,,oopsy ) it's faster and results so far have been very good. No one has yet said they won't eat their dal because it "wasn't authentic" because I used an IP...
Thanks for leaving a lovely comment 🙏🏾
You’re excellent at voice overs! I’m making this for lunch tomorrow, can I put Baby spinach in it as well? ❤
Sure you can
This dal 3 in 1 recipe is sure to come in handy be rain or shine. May I please request a khichudi recipe?
Sure . Noting it down my friend.
@@CurriesWithBumbi Thanks ❤
about how long does it take until the lentils get tender boiling in the pot?
It will take nearly 40 minutes approx
Combine all of these in one is the best
I have a similar kind of recipe of what you are saying. Giving you the link in case you are interested-

I like the tomato dhal could I add some garlic slices into the onion mix before adding the tomato ?
Sure you can 😀.
Beautiful voice
Thanks
hi thank you for sharing my favourite comfort food🙏🏼💕
may I ask, for 1.5 cups of lentils how much water do I add to the lentils during the boiling stage pls?
If you are using a pressure cooker then add 2 cups of water but if you are making it on stove top then start with 3 cups and add water if you see the lentils haven’t become tender but the water has reduced. Please let me know if you have anymore questions.
@@CurriesWithBumbi thank you so much for replying, my kids and I love this lentil recipe, it is simply the best, my daughter loves your voice too🥰🙏🏼 new subscriber!
@@kdotwilly7935 Awww!!! Lots of love to your daughter ❤️❤️. Welcome to Curries With Bumbi family. I am glad you are here.
Ok
Can I use green lentils instead for this recipe?
You can but it will take longer time to cook. Red lentils are creamier in texture but you can definitely give it a try
Can we do red dal with Musturd seeds?
Sure you can
