They can also display in different ways. My son flat out refuses most of the time.
With my daughter it wasn't until going through diagnosis at 9 that her issues around not liking the toothpaste and trying to avoid it or half doing it since 2 suddenly made sense.
There is a Colgate toothbrush and app that we had real success with both my kids for a period of time. It makes brushing like a game and it picks up the toothbrush in a selfie view and shows them where they are brushing, giving them gems and hats to take a photo at the end etc as incentive.
