The reason why Steve Dotto's presentations are so engaging and so useful is that he is so very intelligent. He is capable of holding a vast amount of detail in suspension as he speaks, and to draw out just those elements that clarify his point. He never loses sight of his main goal, which is to provide instruction to his listener that is clear, absorbing and genuinely useful. His intellectual stamina is amazing, as his capacity for sheer, hard work. Therefore, he serves as an inspiring example to the ever-expanding pool of self-employed entrepreneurs, even in those cases where the specific products or methods he describes may not apply in the daily life of the listener. Of course, his amusing and entertaininng manner doesn't hurt, but it's the brain behind the smile that accounts for his success.
Totally agreed. And also, the APPLE NOTES STOCK APP, maybe lack OCR, but it's one of the best replacements of Evernote. Multi platform, works seamlessly in all operating systems, and won't charge you for that. More than enough for the majority of users
Larry Lapidus - And you are the best "commenter” I’ve seen here on UA-cam because of your clear and concise observation skills (and probably an excellent one-on-one listener). How refreshing! 👍
I have to agree. I consider Steve Dotto to be the foremost authority on Evernote. Lots of people do instructional videos on UA-cam regarding Evernote, but his videos are by far the easiest to understand. They actually make you Want to use the product.
The biggest difference right now is that Evernote is better at collecting notes from all over internet, and as such its better file cabinet. Where OneNote is much more powerful and clear winner is in creation of notes. Its text features are far more advance and it acts as an actual paper notebook, you can palce text and draw anywhere you like while evernote is basically an email client focused on cataloging notes. I tend to use both for their strengths but use Evernote more. It is certainly easier to learn and its more users friendly.
In my experience, the desktop version of Evernote is its flagship product, every one of their other platforms (especially their mobile app) is mere moonshine... Large notes cause a complete UI meltdown on the go. Not so, with onenote. I was able to replicate the same content with a much smoother experience! I'm primarily using Evernote now as an elaborate filing bin - what a waste!
I agree that Evernote is like a filing cabinet. The interface reminds me of an email client with an Inbox and Preview window. I don't like how you can't move the pages around as seamlessly to create hierarchy. To organize ideas the ability to create seamless hierarchy makes OneNote a winner for me.
I appreciate how you categorized your comparisons and used the checkmark to distinguish. OneNote's ability to integrate with Outlook does it for me. I post my meeting notes in OneNote, and that hyperlinks to the Calendar appointment. Priceless.
One of the best side-by-sides that I have ever seen. Punchy, concise, and intelligent. I haven't really heard the underlying philosophical angle, which has helped immeasurably in defining the differences I care about.
I didn't plan to watch this whole video, but you are very articulate, concise, and engaged. You kept my attention. Great job and great video! Subscribed.
Steve - You hooked me by that very EXCELLENT course on Evernote - but I have occasionally used One Note - this seems like a great comparison of the two platforms. Thank you!
You got me at the philosophies behind each tool. I find myself bound to Evernote as I love searching for things rather than having to recall where I placed it.
I've been going back and forth about which of these to use, and of all the articles and videos I checked out, this video was the most helpful. (It turns out that Evernote suits my needs better.) Thanks, Steve!
Thanks for the clear words. On 7:40 in the video, you strike the key difference, Steve. Using Tags is the 'new' paradigm that Steve Jobs chose for his iO's (file) organization, over the one dimensional classification of directories, maps and other one-dim hiërarchies. The real power of information management lies in the way that you can classify the same information in multitudes of ways.
Hi, great video again....I have struggled with Evernote (free) for 5 yr. Now that OneNote is free I am going to try it for 1yr. and see how that works. I make jewelry and need to text on photos to document the picture. It has not.....been an easy process. I am not tech savvy as most of you are. I love your channel as you put everything into understandable words. Bless you, Mr. Dotto
I personally use Evernote every single day. I found this comparison quite good actually. I've done the comparison myself recently because so many of my coworkers use One Note. I think you nailed it when you said Search style. IF you need to access your notes quickly, Evernote is the winner hands down. If you want to feel like you are writing in a notebook and want more flexibility on the look and feel of your note then Onenote. Me personally? I use Evernote to track IT projects that are always fast moving. Searching, organizing and moving it between folders is a MUST. I'll stick with my Evernote. I feel it's worth every single dollar I've paid.
Another great video. At the end of the day, as much as I work within the Microsoft environment, I have too much time and energy already invested into Evernote...and not surprisingly despite your efforts to be unbiased, IMHO Evernote still prevails assuming your main usage model is for clipping, organizing and retrieving. Thanks Steve for continuing to provide such a valuable service to the community. Good stuff!
Thanks John, you are correct, EN will still be my prime research tool, but this has opened my eyes to how good ON is for composing and editing, I will be using is more, but not as my "main" note tool.
The most profound and inspiring review of one note and Evernote! It helps me to know the very underlying reasons in my mind that why I stick to Evernote . Evernote is based on search philosophy and onenote is built as a visual straight forward notebook. Thanks Dotto.
You're totally right! I prefer OneNote over EverNote for its visual appeal to me and I love hierarchical way of organizing my notes, because of that I tend to always know where my notes go and don't really use tags search a lot.
what a great resource. I thought this would be an ordinary comparison, but it goes far beyond just that. I realized I had to save this video on Evernote when I started learning new things about Evernote. in fact I tagged it "Evernote tips" because it broadened my experience and utility with Evernote.
Great video as always! Thank you! I can consider using just the one app. I've been using both on different occasions and for different reasons for years. I use them differently exactly for the different philosophy behind each one, as you mentioned. For its search abilities, Evernote is my brain dump. Anything and everything goes there. When I need it again, I only a few clicks away from finding it. Scattered notes, emails I need to keep, photographed documents, they all find their way into my Evernote. I've only recently tried the Premium version. It served me very well on the free version until now. Onenote is my planning surface. If a certain project needs a little more organization, Onenote comes in. Planning my next city break, planning my parents silver anniversary, right now starting to plan my grandparents platinum anniversary, it all happens in Onenote. I don't need to search for the notes later, I now exactly where they live. The system is logic and makes sense. I can find the page I need with a few taps. They work together for me. What I find in my research goes on Evernote and when it's time to organize the info into something that makes sense, it moves into Onenote. I can have one without the other.
What you wrote at the end about how using Evernote first to handle the research, and then using OneNote to organize the results, really put things into a comprehensible light and illustrates the value of having both/and rather than either/or. Thank you!
Superb analysis, Steve. The only problem is that you are so thorough, fair and nuanced that one can end up as unsure as one started! But your conclusion resonated with me: Evernote for most of life, OneNote for specific, writing/publishing oriented projects. The big question this leaves: what's the ease of migration like between the two apps? If Evernote is one's default notetaker and you capture content that you'd want to use in your OneNote project, what is it like to export from E to O?
This is the first time I've stumbled upon Steve Dotto... and WOW! Steve is engaging, informative, knowledgeable and unbiased (as far as this video goes anyway...) and I have instantly become addicted to his delivery and his capability of sharing information simply without coming across too technical. I have been struggling to find a solution to sync Samsung Notes on my Note 8 with my Surface Pro 4, which lead me to look at alternatives. Evernote and OneNote were those exact alternatives, both having apps on Android and Windows 10, but more specifically, my Surface Pro 4. At first, I was a little daunted at watching a 30-minute review of the two products, but having just sat through the whole video, I can say those 30 minutes were very well spent, and actually only felt like 10 minutes. A massive thank you to Steve for making this video, you have not only solved my problem as to which service to use, but you have also shown me which service best suits my needs. I am now a happier Samsung Note 8 and Surface Pro user for this. I salute you sir for your wisdom, your time, and your intellect!
You helped far more than you can imagine... I spent (or wasted) far too much time trying to find a way to sync Samsung Notes with my Surface before looking at alternatives. I have used Evernote for a few years now, and have only recently toyed with the idea of OneNote, though I never really made any effort to really use OneNote. After your video, and based on my needs and how I was going to use either app, I did go for OneNote. The use of the stylus on my Surface, and using my Note 8 as a means to take notes and clip information 'on-the-go' as such, meant it was a perfect match for using OneNote. I will probably continue to use Evernote, though I imagine I will gradually use OneNote more and more.
Additionally... since watching your video, and being inspired to look into other features of OneNote, I did view a few other videos from other UA-cam channels. A NOTE TO ALL VIEWERS! I shouldn't have wasted my time. You gave me a greater overview, and vastly greater information in those short 30 minutes than I've found elsewhere. Thank you again!
Fantastic summary of the key differences between two excellent applications. You nailed it with the tagging features in Evernote - context based tagging separates the two applications. Also, your description that Evernote is for recall and OneNote is to mirror the standard notebook is spot on. I have a Surface Pro tablet and use Evernote as part of my organization/workflow/system. However, I also use OneNote to replace my paper notebook (I see you had the Moleskine notebook - that was the last paper notebook I used before switching completely to OneNote). Another feather of OneNote that I like that is similar to the Web Clipper (by the way, no Evernote Web Clipper for Microsoft Edge is a big downer) is the ability to make a 'Web Note'. I like the ability to write my own notes over a web page and have the new item saved in OneNote. Thank you for the quality content.
Nice and very informative comparison. Just a small comment which I hope you will as helpful feedback as opposed to picky criticism: at 16:35, you say you prefer Evernote for "Compisition and Editing" but you clearly meant to say OneNote (probably not worth re-editing the whole vide but might be worth adding a comment bubble on the screen at that location like "oops! I meant to say OneNote". It confused my and I had to rewind and listen again ). Thanks!
At 16:33 you said you give thumbs up to Evernote (and repeat Evernote again) for composition after espousing about Onenote, and then at 16:53 you confirm Onenote for composition. Just a mis-speak at 16:33 but a UA-cam text overlay correction would be helpful. Great video and as a user of both (moving from Onenote 2003? to Evernote and then back again), I agree with pretty much your entire comparison. Great job!
As for keeping a very very heavy stock of notebooks filled with International affairs regarding each and every country, its politics, society, economy and so and so... My notetaking application requires bearing heavy loads well organised. One may use the new age philosophy of searching, but in my opinion, Evernote becomes like a box of chocolates filled with different colors of toffees, and I may have few notes belonging to any tag, but I need them in a notebook named after one country, in the section titled 'Economy' or 'Crime'. This is why Evernote falls short to satisfy me while Onenote fits perfectly there. I can right away go to a notebook named Syria, and find in the section Foreign Policies, for what had been the chronology of events as the news had been falling into my notebook. Tags simply don't do it, and can't do it. My personal opinion gives Recalling victory to Onenote. In fact, previously I had been using both, but once I switched, I felt much more satisfied.
Yeah, my work is like that. I believe heavier loads are better managed with Onenote. Evernote is elegant but limited hierarchical structure and tag based recalling doesn't work for me. Thanks for the wonderful comparative video, it helped me much to realize my preferences on those tools.
The jury is still out for me. For being a techie, I'm emarrased to admit that I still don't know much about either. With your help, I hope all of that changes. Extremely well presented. Cappy
Great video Steve. I'm a former user of Evernote and switched to OneNote last year. I did it for Organization issues, but your video made me see how could Evernote be better than OneNote for research and recall issues. The conclusion for me is that I could use both depending of the kind of content I fill those apps with ! Good job, thank you for it.
Thanks Steve excellent presentaion, as ever. I have been trying to make my mind up for a couple of years now, I started with Evernote, moved to OneNote and then back to Evernote. Initially I found the limited 'tree' structure in Evernote a little disconcerting, however, care with the way in which you name a document i.e. client name/client project/task name allows for easier visual identification. The tagging system is great! I do find the strong visual component of OneNote very helpful in keeping on top of my work flow and while the tagging system is very different it works for me! I will continue to use both systems everything I receive either by post or email gets stored in Evernote, in client notebooks etc., thoughtfully named and tagged. Everything I create lives in OneNote and will stay there until completed. Once it is no longer part of my day to day workflow, it is then moved to Evernote. In this way it is possible to keep OneNote current and relevant and it is where I run my GTD system (with a little help from Remember the Milk). Thanks again Steve, I have found your UA-cam presentations very helpful.
Impressive work Steve. I gave up on Evernote three years ago and I'm sorry I did. After this demo I'm ready to try again. Keep up the good work! Cheers.
You are a great teacher! My wife Julia Saunders says it is quite amazing and intellectual you are. I agree. You have great grasp of the knowledge and skills for these tools. Thank you!
Thanks Steve for another very clear and concise review. I have been an Evernote user since 2015, always on the Basic package, but after viewing this video again (last night) I have decided to upgrade and go paperless. Even though I am now retired I think this will work just fine for me.
I have used OneNote for years, but when I switched to Mac, the OneNote version for this platform lost a good bit of its functionality from the Windows world I lived in before. That made me take a second look at Evernote, which, as you pointed out in your video, is more reliant on the search function and cannot be as easily organized into folders. However, I would note, that most people I know are not very structured in the way they store data on their computers and Evernote is perfect for those less inclined to arrange things in categories and sub-categories, and sub-sub-categories. Using Evernote more has also forced me to learn more about its functionality and the mind set that its designers have and I've stopped trying to look at it as a OneNote substitute. It is a different approach to note taking and, quite frankly, the more I learn about it, the more I like it.
You have made an excellent point that not everyone needs to be hyper vigilantly organized. I feel it depends on the type of work people do. If they are managing many projects and there are a lot of moving parts; OneNote has offered me functionality I was not able to reproduce with EverNote.
Steve's description of Evernote as an "Information Vacuum Cleaner" is spot on. I collect information constantly. I use Scannable daily to pull in data that I want to later recall.
Excellent comparison Steve. I do like the fact that OneNote is free, however, I do not find it particularly user-friendly. Evernote has been a boon to me since I began using it, and I find that I am using more of it's features all the time. The ability to search is a fantastic plus point. Thanks Steve.
Great video, Steve. Been a long time viewer of your TV show when it aired a decade ago. Now that OneNote is free and not too shabby either, the choice is obvious. Awesome work! Keep it up! :)
I recall using onenote in the days of my acer tablet and really liked the notebook look to it. I have since moved to extensively using evernote. I will out the format richness of onenote. Thanks for pointing that out Steve.
Two reasons I love Evernote VS Onenote, Web Clipper and the search capabilities of Evernote. For me OneNote is cool, but Evernote is AMAZING!! Again, for me and my daily work - I do believe (again, for me) the cost of Evernote Premium is worth every cent for what I need and use! One downside as well, there are there are very few options in IFTTT for OneNote Upside for OneNote is the ability to create "RICH" media to share with others - that however is something I rarely do at this time... I regularly use my Samsung Note to take handwritten notes and drawing into Evernote as well as the camera to take searchable images - I love how Evernote will highlight text within an image during a search... Oh, and I am primarily a PC and Android user - again, my preference - please don't hate! :-) Great video Steve!
after watching it video, I decided to use evernote to store everything from the internet and a regular notebook (bullet journal) to take notes everyday :D
well sir im a new student @ PIKES PEAK COMM COLL(43 yrs old) and Im enjoying your vids on the comparison and your tone in voice so were gonna give thumbs up for ya
I noticed that the mac Onenote version does indeed not use the tags the same way like in the windows version. In windows you can search for tags in multiple notebooks.
A good balanced video - Thanks. I came from OneNote and found just how Evernote handles PDF'S a very good reason not to leave - I still can't believe how slow and very poorly OneNote PDF'S.
Such great insight. Thank you, Steve. As an update, since now Evernote has integration with Google Drive, it's become easier to create documents within folders there - and then simply attach inside Evernote, and then we get the benefits of both with the full search capability.
Hey Steve, great video once again! I saw the title and was excited to see your view because I also use both tools but I use OneNote much more extensively. I do have a couple of comments though... actually 3. I wasn't sure if you were aware but the desktop version of OneNote also does OCR and you were talking about the mobility section so you may have just been talking about the app in which case I agree. I didn't even know that Evernote did OCR from a mobile device.. nice to know! On another note... pun intended, about the tags, I'm assuming you're using the Mac version of OneNote (which I'm not familiar with) it doesn't look like it supports the the tag summary (or "find tags" button) which is used for summarizing tags throughout your page or sections or entire notebooks. A nice feature which I use often to review my tags which I have customized to suite my needs and get to notes quickly however this feature is not in the mobile version so I am frustrated by that. Are you reading this Microsoft? The other thing is just a side note regarding the webclipper. I agree Evernote's is far superior however the one that's built into Internet Explorer is very nice, I know you you don't like Explorer neither do I but if I'm doing a lot of research including emails I'll use Explorer because OneNote integrates with Explorer and Outlook very nicely including the ability to append notes. I think Evernote has Outlook integration too I just don't know to what extent. Well that's my 2 cents I really like both tools for very different reasons which is why sometimes I use Evernote, usually when I'm clipping from the web and I'm mobile. I think Evernote mobile does a better job and it much better mirrors the desktop version where Onenote really falls short. Thank you again for the great videos I always learn something! Tim
Thanks Tim, great feedback. Good news on the OCR front. The Tags is disturbing as it is not implemented system wide, but those sort of tags are still a far cry from the EN tagging, I wish they used a different name for them as it is confusing. they are more labels in some ways. As to using Internet Explorer, please God NO!
Hi Steve, Been following all the EN posts; and saw your video. Started w/ Sugar Sync, then migrated to EN; now still have 2 devices for EN, but trying ON; The big thing for me were the Tags. I'm on a MAC; when i migrated recently when the Mac importer came out - my Tags went into sections of the notebook; anything w/out a tag went to a section that was named (not by me) Pages; and in the Notes that had Tags in EN, they came out on top of each page like this: Tags: #chinese/asian #totry ; and it was shaded. I was able to search on Tag Name, w/out the "#" (it captues everything that had a tag, because they begin w/ "#"); to find the pages (notes) that had this tag in EN. If there were 2 tags created in EN, then it went into the section in ON from the first tag only. Maybe this only happened in the Mac ON importer. Will stick w/ EN for a while - personally believe it is easier to use, create Notes and easier to navigate and search. But ON would be doable. Any thoughts? Thank you - just discovered you, and love what you're doing. Thank you
Hi Steve. Great video - and very evident you really know your tech information, for which we all benefit. Although I can see the overlap between them, I have to say I use them for complementary purposes. OneNote is fabulous as a trial lawyers Notebook - but I do find data easier to manage in Evernote, so both are running for me.
Thanks for this video! I am an almost exclusive OneNote user (use it mostly for lecture notes). I have Evernote a try in the past and never found much need to supplement OneNote with it. Now that you have shown the EverNote strengths, I'm looking forward to trying it for the things that it is better at than OneNote. I just wanted to make one more mention, OneNote does do OCR at least for documents that are printed into OneNote like pdf's. I'm not sure about handwritten notes however.
For people coming into this with the new "Is it time to leave Evernote" video: You can link to individual pages within OneNote, no problem. Right click page -> Copy Link To Page. You can also copy links to sections and section groups the same way. You can also make section groups within a notebook (eg. I have a section group called Psychology, with individual sections for Personality, Intelligence, Reasoning, etc.). You can put section groups inside section groups (eg. section group MTG contains section groups for different formats within the game, and each format group includes sections for deck archetypes). In the Pages part, you can make a page have two levels of subpages so eg. a page for your overall notes related to a topic and then as indented subpages captured articles relating to that topic. In my Reading Now section I eg. have a page for the author, a subpage for the work, and that subpage then has pages for more specific notes. (eg. Section Group "Library", Section "Reading", Page "Schopenhauer", Subpage "Counsels and Maxims", Subpage "Chapter 3"). Or I could just have a single level of pages and have a Table of Contents page with links to anything I want to within the notebook. Works just fine. OneNote 2016 (Windows) also has custom tags and tag search, and that's coming to the Windows 10 app in the near future (they were aiming for this summer but are late), don't know about their plans for Mac/mobile, we'll see. As someone mentioned in the comments you can just hack it by writing #tagyouwant somewhere in the document and search will find it. The one place OneNote definitely falls short is sharing, in that at the moment you can only share links to whole notebooks - to share a page, you'd have to make a new notebook and copy the page there. On another hand if you consistently share content to a certain audience, you can just make a shared notebook with them (that can be read only) and just copy pages there when you want to share something new and it'll sync to their OneNotes. OneNote versions that are not 2016 Windows also can't open an attached file, edit it and save it back to the note. That'll be improving in the future from what I've heard, but is definitely a limitation on the Microsoft Store app and likely on Mac/mobile.
Thank you for your clear explanation of your analysis of the two apps. I am just starting working with computer options other than data entry of other people's information. I have greatly enjoyed Onenote & the clipper. But I now see the advantage of Evernote & the clipper because I do a lot of research. Thanks again.
Steve. Thank you for providing such an "organized" comparison of Evernote and OneNote. My big takeaway was that I don't have to choose between each. The distinction is most valuable. I simply need to evaluate which one I will use for a particular task. If I am composing, I can be confident that OneNote will be a friendly tool. If I am collecting information with a need to search, I will depend on Evernote. I do organize naturally in a visual and hierarchal mindset for recall. However, the 'new age' part of me says "Ah, what the heck", trust in the 'search' capabilities. Also, Steve, I would like to commend you on being forthright, unbiased, and entertaining while providing important information.
First, I appreciate the effort you put into this video. Right now, I am starting the process of writing my second book. I have heard of Evernote and it was more than I needed for my first book. Today, I could use a good note taking app to help with my second book. It is non-fiction book written as a the collection of short stories. the goal is to help people overcome negativity.
Hey Steve. VERY NICE video! 🤩 Great content. LOVE the features u highlighted, specifically WHICH tool wirks best for which task. TY4 clear easily visible graphics, detailed instruction spoken AND shown at reasonable rate, and clear consciousness of importance of screen and audio presentation. DEF ANTF: a model to follow. TY4YS: thank you 🙏 for your service. 🙏
Great video, thank you! It gave me a better overview of both tools. I've never used OneNote but I will also stick to Evernote, I've invested too much into it and I still think it's an invaluable tool for organizing notes and documents, I use the cam feature a ton!
Thanks, Steve. I'm a long time Evernote user and subscriber who recently started using OneNote as my new workplace doesn't allow Evernote. They don't allow the cloud syncing features of OneNote either, but that's another story. I'm really taken with OneNote and have let Evernote slide, but your rational, entertaining, and well thought out presentation is making me reconsider. I think I'll keep my Evernote subscription, let the battle wage on, and watch where the chips fall. I did want to mention one thing, though. I've been a Mac guy for 10 years or so but recently bought a low-end Microsoft Surface Pro because my old Mac just couldn't keep up with today's software and Internet. Windows 10 is not that bad (another other story). I really have to give Microsoft credit for how closely OneNote is embedded into their operating system. The fact that OneNote can appear to Windows as yet another printer is a stroke of genius. OneNote also has a nicer graphical interface, but your point about Evernote's search capabilities is a good one. If only they could marry and have children!
+David Elins I think you're describing the absolute best case scenario for the note, if I had a surface pro, I would be all over one note there is no question whatsoever.
Great video Steve, as always. Very interesting/useful comparison. I'm a Premium Evernote user and will stick with Evernote as I've invested so much time into it and am used to how it works having watched all your previous Evernote videos. I also think it is worth the money. It is slowly replacing my memory as I get older; so useful!
Just so that you know, if this review included Onenote for Window, Onenote would win hands down. Onenote on the Mac is extremely limited and it definitely loses to Evernote. Onenote for Windows offer 10 times the features. Onenote for Windows can capture audio and video, it will recognize handwritten text and is searchable. You can clip, capture and annotate and so much more. I would like to see more of a fair review. From this review, it is only comparing things that are Mac-centric.
Totally agree. OneNote 2016 for Windows is amazing. For example, not only can you insert audio and video you can search for content within those items. Evernote fans keep insisting OneNote doesn't do tags but it does. Not only can you create tags you can search on them. Linking to and/or embedding other content is also much more powerful with OneNote. Then there's the amazing Onetastic add in for Windows. The functionality of this add in is beyond impressive. People who haven't decided which route to go or if they're not tied down to one package should definitely check this out.
The thing I like most about OneNote's tags is that you can tag select content within a note. I might have several tags within a single note calling out various things and those tags are easily searchable across pages, sections or even all your notebooks. So I actually see OneNote's tagging a win over Evernote. Of course, I'm on Windows so results may vary on Mac, unfortunately.
Thanks for letting Mac only users know that if they want the best out of One Note they basically need to install Windows on their machine and then get Windows software or Office 365 to cover both OS. Presenter is up front and honest letting us know his preference is because he moved to a Mac. I like these tutorials with comments for you pick up stuff presenter doesn't have time to add always.
Can only agree. For me One Note is THE killer app of Microsoft. Using it with windows Tablets for more than 10 Years and using it with handwriting, that gets recognized and is very well searchable. Using also Evernote for very long. Yes searching is far more better and also the clipper. I dont do the same in both, so I am using both applications in different areas.
I am SO thankful for Steve's generosity in sharing his knowledge, I alway learn way more than what I sign up for. Even the notes he uses as examples are engaging! (I loved the GTD notes!)
Thank you so much! I have not started with either of the notes apps but I think I may have to end up using both. My workstation is Microsoft EVERYTHING, but my work phone is an iphone. I work from home and rarely use my iphone to refer to my notes in a meeting. I think the ONENOTE will win for my work items. My side photography business, however, I use a MAC. Evernote is the winner there as if I am out on a shoot and I found a cool idea for a shoot but can't remember details it can be at my fingertips. Great presentation! I will check out your other videos.
Really superb job Mr. Dotto. Can I suggest you design a course called, "One Note Made Easy?" I think a reasonably sized segment of your viewing community would like that and it would help you to grow your channel even more. :-) Last thought...you made the solid point of mentioning the plus side of using One Note on devices with commendable stylus support, like the Samsung Note with Android and Microsoft Surface. Was there a reason why you left out the regular and large size iPad Pros with iOS using the Apple Pencil? I have used every iPad made to date and IMO the iPad Pro with Apple Pencil almost transforms the iPad into a completely different device...at least with regard to productivity tasks like note taking. Again, well done.
FYI, you gave OneNote credit for being able to use your Note to write on your phone. But with the built in apps of the Note you still can. I have my Action note which automatically saves to S Note now, which in turn saves to Evernote. Yes it is a round about way, but only takes a minute to show up in Evernote. It actually works great, when I'm out and about and someone gives me info, like a phone number that I need to write down real quick, I do and by the time I get back to my office it's in Evernote and now I can move it to the relevant note or just leave as a new note. Thanks, Great video.
Nice job Steve! How the hell are you doing on this fine day! Considering you put this out recently, there was one point in the second segment that you referred to Evernote twice, but I think you actually meant One Note. Strong performance, I use Evernote for my daily life, but if my wife opens a business, I see where One Note could be useful. Evernote has pissed me off with being cheap and with their customer support about a year ago, but they got the goods.
Hi Steve, I'm like EVERNOTE. In my Galaxy Note 4, I can sync the handwriting made by stylus with my EVERNOTE account it works so nice. So I think EVERNOTE is even friendly to handwriting in Samsung' note series. What's more, you can even take notes without turn your devices. This is extremely amazing in OLED screen. And it's also good news for Evernote .
I am humbled and flattered, thank you!
Man! Your way of talking is way better than any of the youtubers i have seen....

till now !
This is my first dottotech presentation. It definitely won't be my last! Excellent!
You nailed it!
Krunoslav Stifter a
This still the case or has onenote catched up?
Priceless.
That sounds like a great system! I'm glad you found our video helpful.
Subscribed.
Glad we struck a chord!
You saved me considerable time trying to make a comparison between the two... Thanks for the clarity.
Steve is alway clear and fair. Thanks for this video.
I started watching your channel 3 days ago. I love your respectable, unbiased, and informative. Well done. Thank you.
Thank you so much I appreciate that!
Great presentation Steve. Heavily invested in Evernote for years and has become my intuitive resource in the iOS environment.
Same to you
Excellent analysis, thanks for the comparrison. I will use both;I will continue to put files into EN and start using ON for note taking.
I tend to agree, I think tagging is the most powerful organisational feature in EverNote
Your videos are always so good. Thanks for this one Steve - really got a lot out of it!
Glad it helped!
You're totally right! I prefer OneNote over EverNote for its visual appeal to me and I love hierarchical way of organizing my notes, because of that I tend to always know where my notes go and don't really use tags search a lot.
Hierarchy is important for a deeper level of cognition ie for grasping and understanding ideas, concepts, seeing patterns, and making connections
Steve, you've just saved me a ton of time - thank you for drawing out the key differences between these two powerful apps.
Glad to help
what a great resource. I thought this would be an ordinary comparison, but it goes far beyond just that. I realized I had to save this video on Evernote when I started learning new things about Evernote. in fact I tagged it "Evernote tips" because it broadened my experience and utility with Evernote.
Glad to hear it!
What a great breakdown! Thanks so much for sharing!
Very informative video! Really like your style and how clear (and neutral) your points are!
I’m so glad we could help, but I’m dying to know, what did you choose?
Excellent feedback, thanks so much!
Great job!
This was straight-up one of the best tech videos I've ever seen. Thanks, Steve.
Wow, high praise indeed, thank!
Sounds like OnNote is the best choice for you!
Sounds like a good plan! Glad we could help.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, I will continue with evernote and keep an eye on one note.
Impressive work Steve. I gave up on Evernote three years ago and I'm sorry I did. After this demo I'm ready to try again. Keep up the good work! Cheers.
Good to hear! Let us know if is worth coming back to!
Thanks for sharing, Grant! Great decision.😉
You have the most pleasant voice and cadence when talking. Love the video!!
thank you so much!
One downside as well, there are there are very few options in IFTTT for OneNote
Upside for OneNote is the ability to create "RICH" media to share with others - that however is something I rarely do at this time...
I regularly use my Samsung Note to take handwritten notes and drawing into Evernote as well as the camera to take searchable images - I love how Evernote will highlight text within an image during a search...
Oh, and I am primarily a PC and Android user - again, my preference - please don't hate! :-)
Great video Steve!
after watching it video, I decided to use evernote to store everything from the internet and a regular notebook (bullet journal) to take notes everyday :D
Evernote MO is search; Evernote is about the process. Spot on. Helpful to really understand.
well sir im a new student @ PIKES PEAK COMM COLL(43 yrs old) and Im enjoying your vids on the comparison and your tone in voice so were gonna give thumbs up for ya
Helpful video (as ever) - learned things I didn't know as an Evernote user. Thanks.
Thank you for having taken the time. Great synopsis, will help with decision making.
Great comparison with loads of valuable information, thank you, Steve!
Fantastic comparison. I haven't found anybody else out there that didn't 'begin with the end in mind'.
Thanks Terry.
Well done Steve, it was a fair and balance review.
Thank you for this thorough comparison. I can tell you put lots of time and analysis in making this video.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED. THNAK YOU!!!!
Another GREAT Video! And the debate continues....!
You are such a wonderful CLEAR speaker!!! Thank you!!
So glad I found this! Thank you for explaining the pros and cons of each so fully. Your videos are great!
When you say that OneNote was visually inspired while Evernote is for the search inspired. That was spot on.
Thank you for the awesome and thorough video! I wanted to start using a tool like this and have gained a lot of insight into what choice I will make.
Such great insight. Thank you, Steve. As an update, since now Evernote has integration with Google Drive, it's become easier to create documents within folders there - and then simply attach inside Evernote, and then we get the benefits of both with the full search capability.
Great point!, thanks for sharing.
I´m neither going to move away from Evernote. I´ll keep both!. Thanks for amazing review.
Thanks for the feedback, I will look into OneNote's OCR a bit more.
A wonderful comaprision and the expliantion with demos is incredible.
Excellent comparison video. Thanks for this!
For people coming into this with the new "Is it time to leave Evernote" video:
You can link to individual pages within OneNote, no problem.
@Richard Dolmat Don't think so, you have to sort them manually. Section Groups automatically order themselves alphabetically.
Thank you for your clear explanation of your analysis of the two apps. I am just starting working with computer options other than data entry of other people's information. I have greatly enjoyed Onenote & the clipper. But I now see the advantage of Evernote & the clipper because I do a lot of research. Thanks again.
Glad it was helpful!
Am new to both.........loved this video, thanks!
Thanks so much Patricia, sounds like a great way to approach these tools!
Fantastic video, Steve! Really helped me narrow down my choice. I'm new to in-app note taking, and this vid is a blessing. Thank you!
Well done, very objective. I'm actually considering which I should use for a project. I thank you for your thoughts.
Thanks so much! This was VERY helpful for me. I subscribed to your channel due to the quality of your presentation.
Great video! Thanks for the info, looking forward to watching more of your videos.
I am in the same boat! I need Evernote more and more every passing year!
Thank you a lot. It is a very comprehensive review of both tools.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent analysis and presentation
Last thought...you made the solid point of mentioning the plus side of using One Note on devices with commendable stylus support, like the Samsung Note with Android and Microsoft Surface.
I love this man very much IDK I have a weird obsession on him, Great job Dotto
Outstanding comparison which I found to be extremely useful! Thanks.
Great option, thanks for sharing!
Have you put out a video on how to use the best of both Evernote and OneNote at the same time?
thanks for the video. its a great breakdown. i use both, but use evernote more.
Nice job Steve! How the hell are you doing on this fine day!
Considering you put this out recently, there was one
point in the second segment that you referred to Evernote twice, but I
think you actually meant One Note. Strong performance, I use Evernote
for my daily life, but if my wife opens a business, I see where One Note
could be useful. Evernote has pissed me off with being cheap and with
their customer support about a year ago, but they got the goods.
Yep, misspoke a few times. Thanks for the feedback.

Awesome video! Very well delivered, reasonably driven analysis.
