I no longer call it a pile of shame. I refer to it as my pile of potential.
I always just called my “to be built” pile what it is: my backlog. As long as I work at it, they will get done, eventually.
Now I have a pile of potential shame
Shameeee on the pile
Its not a pile of shame.
Its simply me increasing the amount of bits I have to kitbash with
Since I mainly store all my stuff in a big box I call it my "Box of Opportunities" (BOO)
Respect, he spent some of his 48 hours to tell us about a nice mini case
I bought one a few weeks back and love it, will say though that it does have mould line issues so it needs to be trimmed up to get flush fits!
@@TheProphetoftheVoid I am most likely gonna buy one
I've been using cardboard bankers boxes stuffed with eggcrate foam from a cut-up mattress pad. They're
@@TheProphetoftheVoid where do you need to trim?
Also just got this case a week ago; I’m really liking it, especially the window on the front. I had the same mold line problem though
seeing people tackle theyre piles makes me happy and motivates me to wade through my own (admittedly much smaller, yet still seemingly impossible) little marsh of regular minis and tricky old forgotten projects
Not only have I never seen this army before, but I've never seen this version of fantasy concept before - elven sunspirits possessing treeforms - incredible and thank you for highlighting something different!
This is without a doubt the best MiniPainting channel on youtube and I actuallt do mean it. Not only clips like this are full of actually usefull info, but the host has natural charisma, unique style of humor and editing and Tempo of the videos are on point. But mostly your approach to the hobby is something that actually mad me go back to painting. You struck the perfect balance between focusing and improving your painting while also finding a way to not beat yourself over mistakes, shortcommings that had stopped me many times to paint the models I thought i was "not ready" to paint yet.
thank you Jay.
Paint scheme looks great!
For Streaking Grime, I recommend makeup sponges. For a couple of dollars you can get a big bag, then cut them down to workable sizes with scissors.
I'm using them for my space marines. I think it's also a good idea to not leave the streaking grime on too long. More work to pull off the grime.
There's also those q-tips with sponges on the end, I think Ninjon once showed them in one of his videos.
Thanks for this
@@svelle37 "disposable eyeshadow brushes"
loving the yellow, really pops out
I would have thought it was obvious where they get the gold weapons - they absorb water, containing minute particles of gold, via their 'roots' and then grow the weapons like a flower.
Slyvaneth army is very tricky because it has tons of small little twigs and branches that make getting in with a brush harder. Airbrush is definitely the way to go with trees.
I love them! Now you have not only an army of furious trees, but a lot of options for warcry warbands!
Great goal for a project! I just have been working on my sylvaneth army too. Very different colour approach. A cool tip for basing them, if you want to give a leafy foliage look to the bases you can use tea from some teabags
As much as I'd like to have seen the DG get painted instead, that color scheme you went with before is way too unique and awesome to rush over one weekend!
I want to disassemble and clean that airbrush so bad! :)
I love this type of video, cant wait for the next army :)
Love your videos! You mentioned in a video awhile back about the time save of batch painting vs painting individual models. That would be an interesting video to watch comparing the two and seeing what is actually faster.
For a moment I thought you were gonna show a speedy way of painting your amazing Death Guard... A man can only dream
I recomend varnishing before using enammel or oil washes, this prevents the oils from staining the basecoats underneath as heavily as it did for you.
Always love how your brushes look used, the result looks good but not unreal, basically you are relateable. Keep up the good work!
Try cleaning your enamel washes with those timy makeup sponges on sticks.
Also, you really only need to let it sit for a few minutes, otherwise itll make everything really really dark. Id try in batches next time.
Fantastic, great dedication to seeing it through. I need to set a solid 2 days aside like this to finish up some imperial guard.
I love these challanges, one of my favorite videos to watch from you. They are inspiring in many ways, but mostly see that it can look stunning in just two days.
I found disposable eyeshadow applicators held up a lot better for removing the enamel washes. I also tend to use them for things with flat surfaces like you mentioned.
Look for cotton swabs made for gun cleaning, they're a little more tightly wound by design to keep from shedding so much. Might help with the enamel wash removal.
I recommend some form of varnish before applying Oils. You will still tint the Miniature, but its easier to remove and it doesn't darken that much + you get more time to remove the oil.
Beautiful work. To bring more color.you can always get the small leaves for basing and them. All in all, you did phenomenal.
Awesome accomplishment. Hope you can carry over that feeling to some more stuff on the pile. it's all about trajectory, at some point!
I had actually just bought that same case last week. To anyone also thinking about getting it, I’m really loving it so far. I did have to clear up some mold lines on where the door connects though
Tip for streaking grime!
Cheap small make up sponges dipped in a bit of spirits are absolutely the play! Miles better then cue tips and they don't fall apart.
I can see how you may not like the grime color on the smaller minis but I loved literally everything in this video. I have some dryads I haven't painted yet and I think I'm going to try to emulate some of what I saw here. This was really well executed, you should be proud!
These are by far my favourite types of videos you guys produce. Really great work! looking forward to the next one :)
I love your basing on these - so simple but so effective
I have one of those hobby cases. Added lights and some storage on the outside for dice and codex. Can recommend.
Awesome content as usual!! I normally watch your vids because they're so funny but sometimes forget just how great the painting is as well
I think this is some of your best work yet! I absolutely love them!
I loved the vibrant colors before the enamel wash. I applaud you for trying something new. But, the colors were popping!
Great video!
Love the positivity, the color scheme, the breakdown.
Well done!!!!!!
Excellent work, great colourscemes... Respect!
I’m glad you were honest about how this project worked out and the issues with it. Things to consider if I want to try.
You did an awesome job, Jay. That Dryad army looks incredible. Best of luck playing them on the tabletop. 👍👍😁
this was hyper inspiring thank you for the work. im very curious why the brown rim? I could have sworn you always did black.
I love it when you have a hobby themed sponsor. It feels like im watching a 90s shopping channel, and i live for it
That case is so good for it’s price, the only thing that I saw as an issue with it is that it has some mould lines that keep it from being flush. 2 minutes with a hobby knife fixed that quick though!
the technique for the wings looks amazing, really solid job overall
This makes me want to get an airbrush.
My dad is getting the skeleton dudes starter and wont expand it until they are all painted and he's played a game with them so i might do the same but with sylvaneth and paint them similar to this but with green swords
I have unpainted box sets going all the way back to Assault on Black Reach. I have battleforces for 7 armies. My unpainted/unsprued debt is massive. Luckily I saw the amazing Slapchop involving Prime Black, Drybrush grey, dry brush edges white then apply contrast. Pulled out my Tupperware and am getting things ready.
Also rather than buying a Jucoci case you can make one using wood and steel cookie sheets. Using a sheet of Plexi glass as a lid.
You need to put a lacquer clear coat on to lock in all the base coating you did before putting the streak and grime enamel on. Capillary action will then take the enamel to the recesses of the model and the lacquer clear coat allow the mineral spirits to cleanly wipe away the enamel.
i need to make the same i think some weekend here in the fall, just need to buy the last minis for my army
Thinning the enamel out a bit more probably would probably get you the tone you would have liked on the infantry. Also maybe use a satin varnish would male it easier to remove more of the grime
I wish I could get a beautiful army out of 2 days... I doubt I could get half of that. I love your color schemes it just blows me away with the combos you come up with. Great job!
use a makeup sponge to remove streaking grime. a paint brush youre just removing the grim form the crevices as well
How long did you let the enamel wash stay on for? I've never used it, but I hear there's definitely a sweet spot
Those are incredible. Good job.
The most amazing thing I learnt in this video was.
Jay plays terraria and we have the same favourite boss.
I love the paint scheme and the paint job, they're gorgeous !
Oh my God, using water to get acrylics to run through crevices? That's brilliant!
Oh, yeah, nice tree butts and such as well. Impressive how much you did in two days. Spending this year to paint through my backlog as well . . . because I already have a bunch of kickstarters coming. ^_^;
Hi, I know its preety late to ask but.
Could you show the whole process of paiting one miniature? Like 0-100% with making some misstakes, how to handle it etc.? Thanks, cool video!
How!!!?
Wow you are a beast Jay. Looks so good! I really love this colour scheme.
Would recommend using makeup sponge/swab than cotton swab, it would hold up better from those continuous swiping
really loved the color scheme and the arny in one weekend format - makes it feel more achievable for us mortals than the 24 hour paintathons!
I am not sure what impresses me more:
* That you can paint for 24 hours in two days and not be racked by back pain. Or;
* That you still have time to play video games.
Every video you post just astonished me.
Typically I use a GLOSS Varnish before my AK Streaking Grime, was there a vanish stage? Makes it easier to get off and then at the end the Matt Varnish to knock it back down
Hey, I love the video. What is the silver paint you used? I'm not having much success with a well covering silver paint.
I call mine my rainy day collection! but it doesn’t get smaller lol. I’m obsessed with buying the expensive single HQ units at the moment! I enjoy painting one offs more than an army!
love the orange for the spirits, its like they're made of resin or sap!
I applied a magenta ink to some zenithal'd pox walkers, tossed on the shade of the same name, and had some sickly looking poxxers.
Sylvaneth are pretty easy to paint in a cool way i made mine glacial for winter leaf
I think in the future you would be better off not waiting as long before removing enamel layers. It takes practice to find the sweet spot but normally you should start removing pretty much as soon as they look visibly dry for best results. ~20 mins per model depending on conditions. Also use make up sponges
At first I thought they didn't look like trees but smoke with your paint scheme. Then when you presented the finished army I thought they looked really really good and like trees. Good job man!
Ah-maz-ing.
Sincerely. Inspirational.
im painting ultramarines and never owned an AoS model but now i wanna buy those minis they look awesome !
I'd suggest using pieces of torn makeup sponges or gentle dabbing with wool dobbers for large armies that have been streaking grimed in a batch. No stringy qtip remains at all.
That army looks great.
On a side note I find it quite funny that they use the old Drycha mini as a branchwraith.
Dude, watching your channel reminds me of hanging out with a friend, well done!
You have inspired me to get my 3+ year pile of shame of orks and Astra militurm to get painted
gloss coat before enamel wash would help ;)
This is the content I live for, this content right here is my crack ... GIMME MORE OF IT!
I don't call mine a Pile of Shame anymore, I call it a "Vault of Self-Loathing".
well done . great result
I really like your color choices, especially the amber on the ghosts/spirits.
Woahhh 2:37 These are cool, there hair doubles as scenery, like right-away :o
14:00 I've never seen this technique before. Everyone seems obsessed with enamels for pin washing. Very interesting.
Today at my local store i saw a court of the crimson king. It was realy cool. Buuuut i have a kill team into the dark to finish, one rubric kill team, one star corsairs, one cadia stands box, my tyranid combat patrol, an extra hive tyrant, a carnofex, some demonets, a centinal, etc. And i havent even started about my war ship models.
Why do you wet the crack/symbols first, then add white paint? I just thin my paint and let it run into the cracks, no pre-wetting with water, seems to work ok!
Nice job. Knew you could do it.
FYI n95 dust masks aren’t rated for oil based particulates. You need a different kind of filter if you’re going to airbrush enamel or oil paints.
Dang. I should do this when I have all of my custodes assembled (two Christmas boxes and a combat patrol)
I have a bunch of those cases in the ad and they are really good.
what a legend! I'm always super impressed by Jay's ability to paint quality minis really fast.
As someone who spends YEARS painting armies (hell, I don't think I've ever had a fully painted army) I'm actually quite jealous of his ability to knock out an army in a weekend. And they even look very cool!
@@denniswijker7162 i spend longer on individual models and i'm lucky if they come out half as cool as his worst stuff. not something you would probably appreciate until you've tried painting something to a really high level like that yourself. AND he makes it look easy too. It's lucky he seems like a really genuine/cool guy or else i'd probably resent him for how talented he is lol.
also, don't worry. i took a long hiatus from the hobby but i've got several years under my belt as well as well and i too have never fully painted any of my armies. Currently I am kinda close with my slaves to darkness army though!
@@brandunk924 My problem seems to stem from the fact that I have 1 level of painting (which, if I'm honest to myself, is pretty decent. It's not Golden Daemon level or anything, but it's above "battle ready" so to speak. I've been painting minis for a good 20+ years now. And I cant seem to turn that off for units, so they take AGES. It's fine for single models, I spend a week or 2, 3, on a single model, and I'm happy with it. But that's a problem if you need like... 60 infantry.
I would never resent someone for their skill, but being a bit jealous at how quickly he's painting to a cool level, absolutely.
Holy cow! Those models are freaking sweet!!!! Keep it up 👍
You should try foam makeup wedges for the wash removal its what i use for oil washes and the smaller brushes for eye shadows for tighter areas
the pale and yellow/blue is amazing!!
Make-up sponges will help with removing the enamel paints without leaving behind a lot of cotton fibers.
legit just got that case you are sponsored by. the thing is INCREDIBLE! i can store like 5000 points of aos inside and travel with them! greatest case i have ever bought. worth the cost.
My problem is not having the time to hobby and taking forever to build my minis. I really want to paint but there's all these steps I have to finish first.
Look forward to painting an army part2 for the other Christmas box you got haha lol
You're the best Jay, thank you for the inspiration
Wouldn't a brown base coat followed by dry bushing have worked better than using an enamel wash?
My problem is a lack of pile. I get through a box of minis in a week or two then I just sit and don't paint for like a month because I don't have minis unpainted. If anyone has any of pile of shame making tips I'll happily take them!
I subscribed to imperium and now i have a mighty pile

I started this video exactly at 10:44. The same time as the clock in the initial shot 🤯
Great Looking army, respect for the effort 💪
