This is the creepy-weird guy you take guitar lessons from in the back of Sam Ash. You’re walking out after the lesson and one of the workers asks why you’ve been there for so long. “I’ve been taking lessons from Scott” ... “Who’s Scott??”, “He’s the...?” And you go to the back and he’s gone, the room you were taking lessons in doesn’t even exist.
I feel like this.... I like tacos..... They're everywhere....all types.... You can get em here or there.... Its an obvious choice to put on the menu cuz they're obviously kick ass and people like em. I like diminished scales mkay
Diminished chords, yeah for sure. Diminished scales? Less so. I feel like I've heard way more Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor, Hungarian Minor, Melodic Minor, Blues/Pentatonic than Diminished (WH or HW). Diminished chords and arpeggios? Yeah those are for sure all over the place and can be obnoxious/overused.
It's not about the chord themselves, it's about what you do with them. When you have an original riff or melodic chord progression and diminished works with that, then why not use them?
Great video on chord structure, but like you said it's all about how you present them, maybe a follow up video about the compositional techniques that really make these chords pop up and shatter the souls of the innocent?
Does anybody want to add anything to this??? Whole diminished or diminished 7. 1 b3 b5 bb7. Also augmented minor. 1 b3 #5 7. Seems like there's more missing..... off the top of my head.

thank you partner, what really kicked off my guitar skills were dimmu borgir songs, I used to know how to play many of them, and learned a lot, you can learn a lot from these chords, thanks for sharing
I always thought a well-placed major chord is perfect for metal (Fleshgod Apocalypse do this extremely well). It reminds me of a scene from "The Dark Knight Rises" where Bane talks about how hope can eat away at a person's soul. A well-placed major chord in metal is that false hope before you fall back down into the abyss.
The triads aren't usually referred to as "3" and "3b" but as "major third" and "minor third". Both natural chords are 1-3-5 but in different scales (major scale has a major third, minor scale has a minor third).
In practice, yeah, but usually when we talk about minor chords the assumption is that the third is flattened so you don't spell it out. You mostly see b3 spelled out in Hendrix-style dominants like this: E7b3. In that case it means the chord has both the major and minor thirds.
@@penttikoivuniemi2146 That would be a wrong transcription. Those notorious Hendrix chords are actually E7#9. You see, a chord cannot have two thirds in it. It either has a major third (and is a major chord) or a minor third (minor chord). That chord popularized by Hendrix is a major chord with a sharp ninth. In other words, the notes composing the chord are E (root), G# (major third), B (fifth) and F## (sharp ninth. The natural ninth is F# and the sharp ninth is F##). Obviously there is no way to differentiate by ear between a G note and an F## note, but theory is mostly about making sense of things and understanding what roles each note plays. Hence the somewhat pretentious but more accurate use of the double sharp F##.
Sorry for being a douche but there's a couple of mistakes here. First, an Emb5 doesn't have a natural B note in it, just a Bb. What you were playing is actually an Em#4 (usually denoted Em#11 because the seventh note D is also added). Second, a diminished chord also has a major 6th, or in the Edim case - a C#. What you played (E G Bb) is actually the correct form of an Emb5 from the previous part. That's not including the mispronunciation of Yngwie's name :).

bad ass
Those chords sound way better on piano and acoustic then electric.
Only major 3rds, 4ths and 5ths and a few others tend to sound good with that much distortion.
True
Not a fan of black metal, I guess
Of course they do. But the title says scariest notes, in which they did sound pretty scary.
With distortion like that you can't really play them unarpeggiated on an electric, unless you like black metal
Every time you bust into the acoustic my mind defaults to the acoustic intro for Bathory’s “Fine Day to Die”

What's the difference between a flat 5 and a diminished chord?
sidgeaberration it depends on how you use the b5. Diminished is 1 b3 b5. Whole diminished is 1 b3 b5 bb7. Half diminished is 1 b3 b5 b7
sidgeaberration his Em b5 chord is 1 b3 b5 5. So it also has the perfect 5th. Where diminished does not have a perfect 5th. 1 b3 b5

Question: wouldn't a regular minor chord be '1-b3-5' instead of '1-3-5', which is in fact the major chord formula?
Not a theory wiz, just curious
