- Top 10 Main Battle Tanks In The World 2021 - Often we receive many questions which is the best main battle tank in the world. Which is the greatest modern MBT and why. Currently top 10 best tanks in the world are these:
NUMBER 10 T-90 (Russia)
The T-90 is currently the only tank produced in quantity in Russia. It is not as sophisticated as its Western rivals, however it uses proven technology and is cost effective. Currently it is the most commercially successful main battle tank on the global market. Also it is one of the cheapest among modern MBTs.
Number 9 OPLOT-M (Ukraine)
With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine continued development of a T-80UD main battle tank. Their latest version of this tank is the Oplot-M.
Number 8 LECLERC (FRANCE)
This French main battle tank entered service in 1992. Overall it is a successful design. A number of design features of the Leclerc were later used on other Western tanks. The Leclerc was used during a number of peacekeeping and military operations.
Number 7 TYPE 90
The Japanese Type 90 tank was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in cooperation with German Krauss-Maffei and MaK tank manufacturers. It has a number of external similarities with the German Leopard 2. The Type 90 was officially adopted by the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces in 1989. Full scale production commenced in 1992. At the time it was one of the most advanced and in fact the most expensive production MBT. Original Japanese army requirement was for 600 of these tanks, however only about 340 were built due to high unit price. This tank was never exported, as at the time Japan laws did not allow export of military equipment.
Number 6 MERKAVA MK.4
The Merkava Mk.4 is the latest Israeli main battle tank. It is a successor to the previous Merkava Mk.3. The Merkava Mk.4 was adopted in 2004.
It is one of the most protected tanks in the world. This MBT has an unusual design with a front-mounted engine which gives the crew additional protection and chance to survive if the tank is knocked-out. Improved Merkava Mk.4 Meil Ruach tanks are fitted with a combat-proven Trophy active protection system, which destroys incoming anti-tank missiles and rockets. This tank is also well protected against air-launched guided missiles and advanced top attack anti-tank weapons.
Number 5. ARMATA
The Armata is a new Russian main battle tank of new generation. Pre-production tanks were first publicly revealed in 2015. In 2018 Russian MoD ordered a first batch of these new tanks. Exact order numbers were not disclosed but it is likely that around 60 tanks were ordered. First production tanks were planned to be delivered during the same year. Once in service, the Armata will gradually replace the ageing T-72, T-80 and T-90 tanks that become increasingly out-dated.
Number.4 CHALLENGER 2
It is a very capable tank. The Challenger 2 has the latest Chobham armor and is one of the most protected MBTs in the world today. It offers very high level of protection against direct fire weapons.
Number.3 M1A2 SEP
The M1A2 SEP is a successor to the M1A2 Abrams. This tank has incredible technology and armor. Also it has seen combat. It is one of the most feared MBTs.
The M1A2 SEP offers significant protection against all well-known anti-tank weapons. This main battle tank uses advanced armor, reinforced with depleted uranium layers.
Number 2. K2 BLACK PANTHER
Currently the Black Panther is one of the most advanced main battle tank in the world, outclassing anything North Korea or China have. Furthermore it is the most expensive main battle tank to date. Deliveries of the K2 Black Panther tank commenced to the South Korean Army in 2016. As of 2017 at least 100 tanks were delivered. South Korean requirement is for around 300 of these new tanks. These will eventually replace the older K1 tanks.
Number 1. LEOPARD 2A7+
It is a recent version of the proven and successful Leopard 2 design. It has additional armor and updated electronics.
The Leopard 2A7+ is well protected against conventional and urban warfare threats, such as RPG rounds and IEDs.

My brother in law was a reme and did 2 tours in Iraq, he told me this story.
A Challenger 2 had a track damaged in Iraq at night and was in a particularly dangerous location so it was left with the crew still inside until morning when they could recover it. The crew were told to lock the hatches and wait it out. The next morning, when the team had come to recover the tank, the crew were inside playing cards and drinking tea. They were pounded on all night with small arms fire, rpg's and grenades, but nobody got in. The track was repaired and the tank drove home under it's own power. It was repaired and was back in use the following day. It literally had insurgents climbing all over it, trying their hardest to get in but they never did.
If that doesn't show that it has good crew protection then i don't know what does.
And the crew inside didn't fire back at the insurgents but instead drinks tea

Challenger 2 every time, crew safety. damage suffered in battle is repairable in the field unlike other tanks, well proven as a battle tank with a 120 mm Rifled barrel. 7.62 mm Coaxial chain gun. Accurate proven fire power, although an old design but no Challenger 2 has ever been destroyed by an enemy action to date.

@@andreactuel7209 autoloaders are very unreliable overall, they increase the weight (thus fuel consumption) of the tank and at worst cases when malfunctioning due damage, can make the whole tank useless.

T-90 M is being produced two contracts have been signed ... Older T-90 variants will be upgraded to the M standard. And in Russia they are also producing T-72B3M and T-80BVM (for the extreme weather conditions). Just making these errors raises questions on how much effort was put into research for this video.
@ghost24481 you are so dumb lmao. Ukraine never had t-90s to my knowledge. The most common tanks in lpr and dpr militias was the t-72 and t-72 b3. You clearly have no knowledge about tanks. They got most of their tanks from the many Ukranian soldiers who defected to the lpr and dpr.
@@tinydestroyer4672 You forgot the T64 its true combat debut. The Ukrainians had an upgraded version called the Bulat. The IPR and DPR also had these from captured examples and also Russia gave some when they annexed Crimea from the Ukrainian's. T64 tanks in storage. This is known because some of these T64's where captured and the serial no well its the giveaway of where it came from. The Ukrainians also had only 10 Oplot tanks don't know if they where tested in battle and T80's which didn't take part in the war as far as I know.

But during the Iron Spear it's the overall operatinal capabilities, so the fact that they are "only" 3 crew members may allows them to make faster decisions, reload etc...

the Leopard is wayyyyy better than a leclerc. the leopard is since 40 years on the top of the worlds best mbt and the leopard is more combatproofen. the leopard beats always the leclerc at the natotankcompetitions in terms of overall performance. the leclerc only beats the leopard in one thing, in terms of shooting but that doesnt really matter because the leopard has one hit win chance of nearly 100%, and overall performance is definitely more important than just shooting. besides that the leopard was buyed from almost 20 countrys and has always proved to be a reliable tank, the leclerc, on the other hand, was only bought twice and that was 20 years ago, since then nobody wanted the leclerc anymore. If a country wants to buy tanks, the leopard is always an option because it is cheap, reliable, and can muster almost the same effectiveness as the k2 black panther, for example.
In this video, the K2 tank is supposed to replace the old K1 tank, but the priority is to replace the South Korea's (more older) M48A5K tank.
Before long, the Korean Black Panther will be upgraded to the most advanced and powerful tank in the world.

As much as I love the Leopard 2, the K2 Black Panther and the T14 Armata are superior as they have been developed relatively recently.
I am not sure if the SU-57 was designed to be a air-superiority fighter. Not comparable to MBTs since they don't have different roles.
@Drink Dawn I agree that how new or old the tank is does not correspond exactly with rankings. I just go by the rankings as it is, because probably the weapon experts examined the tanks and made their conclusions.
@Humble Germany does make good tanks. Seems like Leopard 2 series was first created in 1970s, and the 2A7 version is ranked number 1. I give credit for that.
Korea at this point does not have a lot to learn from Germany because K2 is currently #2. K2 Panther follows right after Leopard 2A7. Germany created tank Leopard 2, 50 years ago, but Korea apparently almost caught up currently. . Ranking is similar with artillary and IFV as well.

Lab estimates for survivability and performance based on software analytics are likely inadequate for comparison. Only battle tested tanks need apply.

While the barrel of the Leopard 2a7 and K2 are longer, that is just to make up for the fact that they don't use depleted uranium shells. The Abrams has the same 120mm, but with DU shells instead of the longer barrel, and little is known about which can pen more.

Yes the challenger 2 which you are on about lost both tracks and through the night the energy shot out the view finders and i think it was about 70 plus rpgs they fired at it until they were rescued and it took 12 hrs to repair and it was back out with the rest of the challenger 2s.

BTW, Samsung is in the defence business presently and has been in it for decades, but K2 is mostly a Hyundai programme.

Nobody cares which tank is better; they are all good. Everyone cares about the competence of the people commanding/crewing them, because that is the deciding factor.
I can't speak on other tanks as far as training.
But the Abrams platform is easy to learn.
And as far as maintenance the Abrams dosent really require that much in a combat setting.

Caffers good opinion I kinda agree. But yeah there insane tanks. I’m in the U.S and the Leo 2 and chally 2 are Nutty looking. The turret cheeks are just so different from one another it’s cool to look at em all. But It all comes down to variables though with tanks. A lot of variables. This is why I think tanks are opinion based to a degree . Like a tiger one and a Leo . Ya Leo is better but a much closer comparison like abrams and chally. Then that is so close that variables in combat take it away imo

In one encounter within an urban area, a Challenger 2 came under attack from irregular forces with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. The driver's sight was damaged and while attempting to back away under the commander's directions, the other sights were damaged and the tank threw its tracks entering a ditch. It was hit by 14 rocket propelled grenades from close range and a MILAN anti-tank missile. The crew survived, safe within the tank until it was recovered for repairs, the worst damage being to the sighting system. It was back in operation six hours later. One Challenger 2 operating near Basra survived being hit by 70 RPGs in another incident.
She may be a slow tank but the Challenger 2 is an absolute beast. I don’t know about you but if I were going to war in a tank I would pick the Challenger. Not a single tank lost to enemy fire in its whole service in the British Army.
We know the Challenger has the best armor. The M1 just has everything else.
@@seanhazelwood3311 the challenger 2 has a more powerful gun than the Abrams because its rifled which means it has greater muzzle velocity than a smooth bore gun. The suspension on the challenger 2 is as good or even better than the Abrams. The engine on the Abrams is a great let down as you need a convoy of fuel trucks to keep them running, the challenger 2 engine is only 1200 cc but it's very reliable and still quite fast and it can go much farther in mpg than the Abrams. I would certainly agree that the electronics on the Abrams are much better than the challenger 2 but with the upgrades on the challenger 2 to start soon it will easily beat the Abrams and put it on a level par or better than the leopard.

@@terrywainman6050 We don't need the hotter main gun because only the M1 and Challenger have enough armor to worry about. Plus, the rifled gun wears out faster and needs more cleaning/maintenance. The Challenger suspension is close, but with it's much slower ground speed it's a moot point. The US doesn't rely on mpg because we have plenty of fuel. We want speed and HP, and no MBT on earth will outrun an M1A3. Our support vehicles have trouble keeping up with it. You're correct about the Leopards electronics, but the Challenger isn't even close at present. The Leopard can't do 60+ mph over desert terrain, so it naturally can't guarantee a hit at that speed. The M1 Can.

You forgot to mention the Oplot M can only use older APFSDS rounds in comparence to for example the T-90.
I'm wondering about the likelihood of an Abrams M1A2 catching on fire when it is hit. Is the crew protected from that? Why didn't we use a diesel engine when a diesel engine performs just as well and gets better mileage?

I think everyone has a fav tank and it varries, i totally respect your opinion, you're talking facts right here. I respect any tanks for what they are made to be, leclerc on paper is "probably" lacking armour because that's how the french fights. Simply does it, Leclerc, Abrams, Leo, Chally etc.... Honestly, I think you are wrong. Can it kill the others? Not so sure given that Abrams employs a very thick armour and the Challenger II is renowned for crew protection. Leopard's turret is basically impenetrable by any tank right now. But they can all pen the Leclerc I would guess. Just by looking at the weight, obviously it is a tad smaller but weighs a lot less. And then this turret looks very vulnerable.
Obviously we can't really access it because all armour values are classified. I would though say that it is a good tank but if it can destroy the others, not so sure.

That make him way harder to destroy compared to all the others who needs to stop which make them an easy target.

If a country wants to buy tanks, the leopard is always an option because it is cheap, reliable, and can muster almost the same effectiveness as the k2 black panther, for example.

Interesting video and comments. Rating tanks by their technology or engineering is an exercise in hypothesising. In WW2 the German Tiger was the biggest, strongest, best armoured and with more fire power than any other tank in the world. It was up against Sherman's and T34's, both vastly inferior, but by sheer weight of numbers these tanks slaughtered the Tiger fleet. China may not have a tank listed in this 'Top Ten', but you can bet your eye teeth they have thousands of them.

When you make so many footage mistakes it does not sounds credible. Just some propaganda. Also, nowhere is mentioned that all tanks have a 4 kms target limit, while T14 Armata can go up to 8.
Armata is a prototype, battle untested. The Tiger 2 had 152 mm hull armor, the Maus had 200(?)mm of hull armor BUT was never battle tested. Deal with it.
Did you check Turkish New Operated Tank ‘Altay’ I seems it can be in top10, It has all stats like a German Leopard and can be use from command post without crew
its already on the list, its korean k2 Black panther, altay's armour is just a bit more upgraded.

I am saying that altay tank is already on the list as one of the best tanks because altay tank is built by the license and technology transfer from the south korean tank, k2 black panter. a perk for having a good relationship with another country. outside of engine (working on an indigenous engine) and the main canon, turkey will be able to produce most of the tank's parts indigenously. which means the subsystems of the tank will be produced by turkish defence companies like aselsan, roketsan, havelsan etc. and thanks to boron element, the altay's composite armour will be one of the strongest armours ever made. so don't worry, your tank is in the list as k2 black panter.

Hastily put together list, lots of errors but most surprising is why a next gen tank like armata is so down on the list ( we get it disclosed information) it is a tank built up from scratch, put aside your bias
There are some problems with the Armata mainly the advanced systems that are required not currently being ready for testing much less deployment.
Agreed about the author's bias and I am sure he has videos about BMW and Mercedes also. If this was based on aesthetics, the Armata is last on the list. It's an ugly beast, but so was the T-34 and we all know how feared it was by German generals. Russians tend to produce really good equipment at a fraction of the cost and time compared to the "West". I was in the Marine Corps infantry 2003-2007 and I liked the Abrams, but it is complicated, consumes tons of fuel and has an astoundingly hot signature due to the turbine. Heat guided ordnance is very attracted. I never saw a leopard or a challenger, but I can imagine they are equal, if not better than the Abrams. Alas, pretty sure the Armata will be a game changer in the tank world when the full capabilities are released.

It's a good tank, it's seen battles in the middle east with no reported losses & proved to be decently accurate when firing also.
