- The Leopard 2 MBT is a 137,000 pound or (62.3 tons) vehicle that is approximately 33 feet long with the main weapon oriented in a forward direction, 12.25 feet wide, and 10 feet in height to the top of the turret roof. The vehicle is operated by a crew of 4, consisting of a driver, loader, gunner, and commander. The crew layout is traditional, with the driver located at the front center toward the right hand side and the others located within the turret. The main weapon of the Leopard tank is the 120 mm Rheinmetall L/55 smoothbore gun.

Regarding Syria and Turkey: prior to the battles in Syria the authoritarian Turkish government had initiated a huge politically motivated purge among it's officers. The Turkish tank units lost a lot of qualified officers.
Additional the Leopard 2 was never designed to just fight from a static position. It is a tank that is based on mobility and fire power. If the crew is not trained well even the best tank will have a hard time on the battle field.
Ask Canadians about Leopard 2s, not Turks.
And they'll say its a beast and the Taliban often didn't bother turning up when they spotted one?
Note: All the countries that use the Leopard 2 are metric, so conversion factors would be nice. The Leopard 2 is the Tiger tank of WW2-far and away the best of the best. The best armament our country (Canada) has ever purchased, tank-wise. It's a monster. Nothing is indestructible, but this is pretty close.

Yes, the Leopard 1a1 to 1a4 have the flat front turret, and the later generations (a5, a6, and a7+) have the (mounted) angled front turret, which makes a huge difference in terms of ricochet and armourment
9:29 that's the point with all current tanks even AbramsX. Anti-tank missiles and anti-tank mines have become increasingly powerful that any tank can only survive when detecting these attacks with sensors and taking measures before they hit the tank. Then of course the latest Maverick air-to-ground missiles (AGM).
Using a tank as the lead charge in a battle maneuver --- like what's seen on footage from WW1 and WWII, in 2023 ---- is like using an aircraft carrier (with jets on it, too, of course) as the lead. It makes zero sense.
If an aircraft carrier didn't have 10 to 15 other specialized ships surrounding it, including a nuclear sub, all moving as a formation, with the $15B carrier securely in the middle, it'd be sunk without any problem by most nations around the world. (That, BTW, was how the lone giant, 72K ton Yamato was sunk: it's on its own more or less in the open Pacific ocean, with hundreds of American boats, ships, fighter planes, and intel everywhere.)
Anyway, a tank is supposed to work more or less like an aircraft carrier, in a more localized environment, of course. A tank should be surrounded by other tanks, supporting vehicles, and plenty of foot soldiers (carried by fast, light armored vehicles).
Up in the air, the terrain a unit of tanks driving into should also have air cover...

But that was because of bad crews and tactics. You can't just put a novice rider on the fastest horse in the race. Because of that, it will only depend on the Ukrainian army and their tactics, plans, crews and more. No tank is invincible, but the crew can almost make it invincible.

Modern tanks, including the Leopard 2A7+, are using active protection (here Israeli Trophy System). That massively increases the survivability
The Leopard 2's Turkey is/was using are also of older model, as can be seen by the lack of additional V-shaped armor addons for the turret. As far as I recall Turkey was denied more modern upgrade packages for their Leo's due to their ongoing conflict with the Kurds that were / are seen as allies vs the IS aswell as some other concerns. So TL:DR the L2's Turkey used in that conflict are far away from the L2A6 Variant that Germany agreed to sent to Ukraine.

I have no illusions that Leos be it 2A4 or 2A6 will be lost in Ukraine. No machine is invincible or undetectable.
However begin in a Leo 2 gives a much better chance then being in a pickup or an old T55 like the M55.
Any additional Leo gives Ukraine a slightly better chance to survive.

Well , the Leopard 2 Version which Turkey uses is an old one , the 2A4 , is from 1985 = its nearly 50 Years old. Its the 2A5 which introduces better Armor and the 120mm L55 Gun . The Turkish Leopard 2s played sitting Ducks , not supported by Infantry , as Russia has seen in the Ukraine , thats an bad Idea ....

Too heavy .and cumbersome. At the time when portable light precision weapons can now destroy any best tank you cannot build such over size tank with a footprint visible at high altitude. This is an easy target for air and land rockets. We are no longer in ww2 era where guided rockets was a luxury for armies. A cheap rocket can destroy an expensive tank like the leopard 2. Technically you lose 8 people for each 2 destroyed tanks. Can a redesign version reduce this human loss to 6? It's time for tesla and google to design modern battle tanks.

The Leopard 2 A6 does have a longer barrel. This also means, that a projectile has more kinetic energy if shot with a Leopard 2 A6 than with an M1A2 Abrams.

I've heard most bridges in Ukraine can't hold above 50-55 tons. So these won't be able to traverse bridges there.
Not only that, the question remains which variants are being sent since you have to remember that the first leopard 2 was produced 1979. Those won't fare any better than the tanks that Ukraine is using currently.

And ukraine will not get fully equipped abrams, but an export version with all classified items removed including the special armor. So another piece of scarp metal. So if T-72/T90 are inferior to the all but modern versions of Leo and Abrams, the old Leo and downgraded abrams is maybe even less effective as a T-72 with well trained crew. Not to mention that ukrainians have decades not used a loader. Well, a chinese type 91 would help ukraine more than western tanks - they use the same ammo as ukrainian tanks, so no need to diversify the supply of different types of ammo, the basis of type 91 is in fact T-72, which is well known to ukrainians. But ok, western countries and USA wants to get blamed, so be it. It is their choice.
