    Hi, Mr. Moran. You probably get this a lot, but I have a question about temperature The temperature in my house falls quite low at times (below 60 in the colder parts of our house it some times drops below 50 [but not usually]). We try to keep it higher but we are adding on to our house and lets just say... there are holes in our house. I have a T. albopilosum which I learned can be a low temperature T. I am looking to get slings but I keep getting worried about the temperature because they don't have that waxy coating that protects them from dehydration. The air where I live is also quite dry. I wonder if there are certain species that are more susceptible to colder climate. If so, could you tell me them? I am looking at incubators that I can put slings/juveniles in. Do you think that's a good idea? What are your thoughts?
    BTW. Your channel has really helped me learn and grow in this hobby, and your podcasts are awesome!!!
    Thank you so much for doing this, and I hope you never stop!!!

      Hello, Vmax! So sorry for the delay. If it gets that chilly, you'll want to look at north american and south american species. Aphonopelma would be a good genus to start with, as many experience colder temps in the winter. Brachypelma and Grammostola also experience colder temps at times, but it can cause fasting.
      If you want to add heat, I would find a larger glass tank, mount a heat mat on the back with a thermostat, and place the smaller sling enclosures inside of it. That way, you're slightly raising the temp in the larger enclosure and not trying to heat the little enclosures individually. You'll just want to make sure you carefully monitor the temp inside and make sure that the enclosures don't dry out.

    I joined a new facebook group and there's a giveaway for this species for the first 1000 members.
    I'd never heard of it and hoped that I'd win one. It would be my first T.
    After seeing this, I think I'd be out of my league! I have a hard time catching wolf spiders because their speed triggers old arachnophobia. I'm pretty much over that but OMG, a teleporting old world? I hope I win but man, I'm going to have to grow a pair for rehousing.

    Hey, Tom, please make an update on your specimens!! :-) How big do they get? I assume humidity requirements are similar to Chilobrachys and Cyriopagopus spp., do you find this to be so or can they tolerate a drier setup? Does it tend to be a terrestrial webber in captivity like much of the Chilobrachys spp.? Or is it an obligate burrower (pet hole)?

So if I quit buying, at least I do have a pokie. At first it looked a little creepy to me, but now I've gotten used to it. Hi Mr. Moran. Love your videos--you're my go to when I need to figure out husbandry for a spider I'm looking at. Got a B. simoroxigorum from Fear Not about a month ago (1/12). Kept it moist in a dram vial and fed it cut up pieces of meal worms twice a week. It went into pre-molt about 10 days ago and molted on 2/12. It looked like it came out of its molt fine and I was going to wait for a few days to feed it. When I looked in on it this morning (2/15) it was dead. I know slings sometimes don't make it but I was wondering if there could've been something I did. I'm aware you can't give a real answer without having seen my setup. The only thing I can think of is I may have kept it too moist. It wasn't so damp that you could wring water out of it but it was definitely moist to the touch. How damp do you keep yours? I'm thinking about getting another one but I don't know if I want to put up the money to replace it yet--but if I do I don't want to make the same mistake. On unrelated notes, I had my H. pulchripes go from 3/4" to hook out male at 3.5". Does that seem fast to you? Do you have an A. geniculata and will you do a video? And I know you have your beginner and intermediate lists. So everything else is advanced. Are there any species you think are beyond advanced? For reference I am one of the people that came from the snake hobby and jumped right into OW Ts and now have 13 OW and 12 NW minus my simoroxigorum. Thanks and I look forward to new videos and podcasts.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 роки тому +1

      Hey, Mark! First off, I'm so very sorry to hear about your B. simoroxigorum. I've heard from a couple folks that they need moisture but not TOO much moisture. With mine, I kept the lower levels of substrate moist and let the top 2/3rds dry out a bit. If the substrate was kept too moist overall, that COULD be the cause. Was yours wet all the way through, or did you let the top dry out a bit. Even then, it could just be that you had a sick sling. It does happen. I would get another and just be sure not to overdo it with the moisture. As for the H. pulchripes, the males DO seem to mature rather quickly. My A. geniculata was a male and died breeding many years ago, and I've been on the lookout for a new one so that I can do a husbandry video for it. I honestly don't think that there are any species that are beyond advanced. The two that come to mind that can give people the most trouble are the O. violaceopes and the T. blondi. Both are moisture dependent and are very large spiders. The O. violaceopes is very fast and packs strong venom, and the T. blondi gets huge and has nasty hairs. Hope that helps!

    • @markaronson4803
      @markaronson4803 3 роки тому

      @@TomsBigSpiders Thanks. I greatly appreciate the reply. I don’t think that it was too moist. It definitely wasn’t soaking in there but I did never really let it dry out any. Probably have to wait a little before I get a replacement-I’ve blown my spider budget for the near future. Didn’t want this to happen to any of them but especially not that one. My H. Pulchripes just surprised my with how fast it matured. Went from 3/4” to MM in 13 months. I don’t have a T. Blondi but I have the apophysis and an O. Violaceopes but they are still about 3” so I’ve only had to rehouse them once so far. Keep up the good work-it’s clear you’re a teacher who enjoys his job.

Personally I’m not sure how I feel about it. I know we all see them as pets and we love them, but sometimes when I hear people talk about their collection it almost comes off as if they’re treated like baseball cards (I know this isn’t the case) but I would love to hear what you have to say about keeping them as pets vs the collection aspect of the hobby. Hey Tom, love coming back and rewatching this! I need some advice from you. I was also born and raised arachnophobic (never had a fear of tarantulas but true spiders terrified me.) I have now kept wolf spiders, black widows, and numerous jumping spiders, so my true spider fear is much better, but I recently realised I have a “fear” of mature male tarantulas. My Birupes just matured out and this gangly boi is truly terrifying to me. The teeny tiny spider I spent the past year and a half raising is gone. I don’t like the way they move, they are far too leggy, and they just have a very different vibe overall. I know how insane I sound and I think this if anything is a pretty decent sign that I should leave breeding to the experts, but I’m genuinely dreading packing this guy up. The last t I shipped was my mature male P murinus and it was a nightmare and I’m so stressed over getting this big leggy crazy spider into the shipping container that it’s making my skin crawl. Obviously I still love him and he’s always been a male so it doesn’t make sense to me why I suddenly have this fear when I’ve had zero issues with rehouses with him or his sister and I’ve never actually had anything happen during any rehouse. Do you have any advice on ways to get tarantulas into shipping containers, or have you at least heard from others that find the mature males “unsettling”? Thanks!
    - Charlotte

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  Рік тому +1

      Hey, Charlotte! Sorry for the late reply; I missed this one! I was JUST telling a guy in another comment that even after I was over my fear of larger female tarantulas, the males used to freak me out for a while. There is just something about their sharp, gangly appearance and quick movements. I think that what you are describing is actually very common for recovering arachnophobes. I will tell you that it does get better over time. It took me a while, but the males don't bother me at all anymore. And I shot a video of us packing up some mature males a few years ago, but I lost the footage and never posted it. I'll have to put together another! I hope that helps! Hang in there; it should get easier over time.

      @@TomsBigSpiders thank you so much for getting back to me! I had to pack up my mature male B. simoroxigorum on Monday and he was super skittish and hearing his legs skitter around the catch cup freaked me out so bad and I didn’t even wanna look at him. I almost packed up the catch cup and drove it to my local breeder to help get it into the shipping container, but I decided to give it one more try. He slapped and struck at the paintbrush and instead of feeling fear or disgust I felt bad for the little guy. He was clearly terrified. All my fear melted away and I was finally able to see him again as the tiny little sling I raised up and doted on for the past year and a half. I gently touched his front legs with the paint bush through the catch cup and he just slowly lowered himself and almost stroked the paintbrush it was such a tender moment for me finally seeing a super fast super gangly mature male as not something to be afraid of but just part of nature. He was still my boy and I still loved him even if he looks funny now. I just wanted to share this cause it was a huge step for me.
      And yes, please shoot another video for packing up for shipping! I have a few more males maturing out soon and they’re all new world terrestrials so I’m a little more confident but I’d still love to hear tips from you since you’re my go-to for tarantula care.
