"Look at that. 2 x 2.5 is... ALMOST EXACTLY 5!"
I love this guy. He has a level of enthusiasm that the others don't quite match.
*almost exactly 5, not 5!
@@SoffiCitrus Aw man you beat me to it. I was gonna go like "2*2.5 is not equal to 120 what do you mean?"
Math meets reality. Every Scientist and Engineer should use a slide rule for a day once a year.
the slide rule day
I could agree to the 100%
Give this man a kids show! He could be the Bill Nye of math!
then kids would think math makes you love klein bottles
But it does!
Except this guy is actually a mathematician...
Actually, he's an astrophysicist.
Electric Sliderule also one of the world's first cybercrime investigators.
I love Klein bottle guy!
I dunno, it just seems pretty impossible to get inside his head… … … pun intended ;)
I think you mean the pizza guy
me too!
We really mean the Cuckoo's Egg guy, the Urmel catcher, the guy that caught the German hackers stealing data from Berkeley and selling it to the KGB in the eighties.
Search for "The KGB, the Computer, and Me" on UA-cam if you don't know what this is about.
+
Seeing this guy being so enthusiastic with math always makes my day a bit better.^^
I think he gets more excited about the electrickery :D
if you love Cliff Stoll, you should look up ""The KGB, the Computer, and Me" its a NOVA story about him catching a KGB hacker trying to steal military information by setting up a honeypot for him. Cliff Stoll is very enigmatic when you research him, and theres a reason he is so beloved by numberphiles and the USA around. He is a patriot. but above all, just a scientist trying to make the world better. The real superheroes don't wear capes. Except for that one time where Cliff wore a cape and ran around the hallways, thats just.... Cliff for ya.
Or even better, read "The Cuckoo's Egg"...which is the book that the show is based on.
But don't read "Silicon Snake Oil." He takes a very mean spirited anti-technology slant in that one.
his enthusiasm is not limited to klein bottle!!
+Phi6er I believe that just made my day 😁
Implying his enthusiasm is limited in any way, shape or form is pure blasphemy
His enthusiasm is unexpendable, watch his TEDtalk and you'll see, this guy has done some amazing things haha
pizza was an awsome ep
His enthusiasm is limitless. His enthusiasm is infectious. His enthusiasm is like social-probiotics. His enthusiasm is a disease that needs to spread. I don't think even he has the slightest idea of just how powerful his demeanor is on the world around him.
Being like Cliff Stoll when I'm old is my #1 life goal
5:14 I love how he asks why bother owning a calculator, but never wonders why own an electric slide rule
I love my slide rules (yes, multiple), but that has to be the coolest slide rule ever.
My friend and I had the opportunity to hang out with Cliff about a week after this video was filmed and he is one of the most incredible people I have ever met in my life and he is just like he is in these numberphile videos. He was telling us about how he wasn't sure what to show Brady when he came and when he showed him his slide rulers Brady was so excited and was just playing around with them! And the slide rulers, Phoebe the robot, and all of his Klein bottles are so cool to see and play with in real life. So, thank you Cliff and Brady!!
Is it legal to have that much fun with maths?
Yes. Not in the time they believed in witches, though.
Yes!
Yes, with the proper license.
He will _make_ it legal.
??
I knew it'll be something he'd make
He only builds high quality electric slide rules
Damn it, I can't get away from you.
"There's our friend pi!!!!" I love this guy
We need this in schools. It would fast track logarithmic understanding and thus aid in similar math visualizations; as are needed in calculus.
I'm a simple guy. I see this man, I click.
0:09 true happiness
I love the captions right there aswell
I just started using a couple slide rules around the house, and am honestly surprised that they didn't teach us these in lower education. It allows all the numbers and their relationships to make so much more sense.
How about an electronic slide rule... that is controlled by a computer, for being ultra-lazy. Type in "10 x 4.2" on a computer, the slide-rule moves about to the correct point and a camera looking at the cursor shows you the answer :)
That's exactly what I thought! Didn't see your comment until after I posted though haha
You would probably have to use some sort of calculator in order to program this contraption.
42/42 Would make it.
Exactly!
I thought the same thing. I want to build a CNC slide rule now.
James Grimwood even better! it does the math, and then makes a gif of it doing the logorithmic calcs
What a wonderful man. My life has gone from log tables to calculators, it is lovely to see an electric slide rule and I wish I owned one.
Hey ! 2 times 2.5 is ALMOST exactly 5!
Yeah, It's 4.98635353746746736436 but close enough I guess. lol
@@harveyharbicht4959 what?
@@juanpgomez1299 It's sarcasm
🙂
I believe Cliff brining one of these to school and using it
Or better yet high school students using these at SAT tests instead of calculators
WHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Man, I love the giant slide rule! That's awesome!
Interesting thing... A lot of early electronic calculators used decade ring counters, then binary coded decimal, and later on, floating point binary arithmetic, but the early Wang calculators featured an electronic log/anti-log circuit, and actually worked like an electronic slide rule! The LOCI 2 and the 300 series definitely worked in this manner. Wish my 360SE worked...
Added subtitles (English) if anyone's interested.. tho some has to review it first. :/
"Let me talk to Americans for a moment. 5 + 4 = 9." Think you've already lost them doc.
lolol
They ARE Americans, so he already did.
+Sure This is the only acceptable explanation for Trump being on the run for the White House! :D
+Sure
"Any math is too much math" is unfortunately not an American prerogative, but a global illness.
He meant using yards instead of meters for the americans
The subtitles at the start for cliff are just beautiful, his "happy smiling"
You must have hit the like button as soon as you see Cliff's smile at 0:09
The fact that he made his slide rule electric isn't even the weirdest part. It's the fact that he owns a giant metal slide rule and has it hung up in his workshop for use.
Giant slide rules were a fixture in engineering classrooms, where a teacher could show an entire class how to use the thing. Most of them got sent out in the trash; the survivors are now collector's items.
This guy is adorable. I really enjoy how excited he gets, and how expressive that makes him. I bet he was incredibly unpopular when younger, but now with age he's become endearing.
Can't you just imagine him in front of an auditorium full of junior high kids? They'd love him!
I've never gotten such a clear explanation of how slide rules work. This is why I'm subscribed.
Sliderules are great when you are grading and need to make fixed adjustments or apply curves. You set them once and then can quickly look up everything without having to enter in every number individually.
Numberphile has many fantastic hosts, but Cliff is the best amongst them.
I love this guy mainly because of his enthusiasm and the fact he sounds like Tigger xD
This is the kind of teaching I like. Presents a concept and then uses easy to understand examples with physical proof instead of just saying "just know its true."
So multiplication of number can be shown as the the addition of their log10 components.
10 X 100 = 1000
log10(10) + log10(100) = log10(1000)
1 + 2 = 3
3 = 3
10^(3) = 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000
so 10 x 100 does in fact equal 1000. It's so easy to prove it's amazing none of the mathematics courses I took ever mentioned this.
First time I understand that Slide-rule I have for decades. Thanks for simple clear explanation. Fun the elektric-mechanic you made,Top.
Look at this! 2 times 2.5 is almost exactly 5 !!!
Cliff Stoll is the closest to a mad scientist that we have in 2016
He reminds me of that cool Klein bottle guy.
He is that guy
someone didn't get the joke
+Seb Wilkes Haha
I don't either
He IS that cool Klein bottle guy!
Antimony THAT'S THE JOKE omg
I love this man with every fiber of my body. I first heard about him in the mid 90s when he would do pieces for thesite on early MSNBC. He'd talk about where the Internet is going. My NSA dad told me that he was huge in the history of Cyber-security, and from there, I read his book, The Cuckoo's Egg. From that book, Cliff got me to choose my major; he pointed the way to my career. If it was not for this man, my lifetime earnings at this point would be reduced by nearly a half-million dollars today. And yet it is so much more than that. He taught me to care about more than things like technology and money. He taught me the importance of caring about people in a bitter pubescent time that I wanted to reject that concept. He showed me you can be a nerd, and still passionately care about your fellow man. I have very few heroes in this world. I am extremely choosy about them, and I don't even particularly recommend them in the first place. Heroes will let you down if you invest too much in them. Cliff is still my hero. Cliff Stoll is a national treasure.
absolutely love the slide rule and his way of explaining :)
A beautiful thing. I've at times considered building a giant circular one for my collection and motorising it but I have nowhere to actually do it yet.
Brady's fave looks like a Pickett N600-ES, as used on the Apollo Project. Very nice piece of kit.
I don't care how long or short it is or what else I have planned-when Cliff Stoll shows up on my feed, everything goes on hold.
I love this nut job!!!
Everyone should experience the joy of finding something in their life that brings as much enthusiasm as this man has for klein bottles.
Cliff wouldn't happen to have another thousand of these under his house, would he?
I want one. 👍
This guy is my favorite crazy person.
Right up there with tesla, the Doctor, and characters that've been played by Johnny depp
Burak Bağdatlı
The more I see of this guy, the more I think it's probably the rest of us who are the crazy ones.
He's the sanest person in the planet
'Electric Slide Rule'. I have a vision of mathematicians line dancing in cowboy boots!! Seriously, this guy is awesome!!
I do love the passion this person has. Makes you want to pay attention even if the topic sounds boring at first.
Please make a video where Cliff Stoll tells us about the time he was standing on his toilet to hang a clock, slipped and bumped his head, then came up with the flux capacitor.
Me: Sees a thumbnail with Cliff Stoll
Me: Clicks on video
Well done! One of the best introductions in slide rules i have ever seen. I always carry around with me an Aristo Studio 868 and an Pickett N600-T. Greetings from Germany
I absolutely LOVE this guy.
Hanging a huge electric-powered slide rule from the ceiling isn’t normal, But on Math It Is.
A quick thought for y'all. In terms of he accuracy of the slide rule, in that it's more accurate down near zero, less accurate up near 10 - floating point numbers on the computer are similarly accurate in how they work, more fidelity near zero, much less as you go toward +/- infinity.
Cliff never fails to make me excited about math, at least in regards to whatever he is talking about. Would love to see more vids with him!
I think my dad's first calculator was called an electronic slide rule, thus I initially thought this video would discuss early handheld calculators. This video of course turned out to be neat in its own way.
That spawned at least some interest in how log actually can be used! Thank you.
You are insane, I love it. I would love to know the details of how that slide rule works. Have you thought of having it controlled by a computer. Could have it as the first analogue display for a digital calculator. Thanks for the show.
Holy heck I'm so excited for a new video with Cliff Stoll! He's absolutely my favourite!
I love how it starts with showing his work and his overhappy face, without saying one word.
Very charismatic!
Cliff = Instant like
My favorite part was when pi made a cameo. Such a celebrity, that guy
This video is grand. Thank you for the perfect captions.
Cliff Stoll is an absolute gift to humanity.
Cliff in probably in my top 5 favorite people of all time.
Cliff Stoll's enthusiasm towards mathematics is everything I need to live.
You, Sir, and I say this with respect and affection, are the most beloved and cherished type of "crazy". Thank you so much for your fun and amazing videos. If I could find a teacher like you I would go back to college and try for a degree in mathematics or physics.
Say, why not make a series of instructional videos on those subjects? I, for one, would watch them with great pleasure.
Yay, the more Cliff the better!
I would love to have that enormous slide rule, that's pretty sweet!
This man is proof that if you love something, that love just shines through, and is infectious to others. 😊
This man would have made me way more passionate towards math back when i was in school. I missed out
I just love Cliff so much...
His enthusiasm fills me with so much joy I just have to laugh and smile at my computer. I love him.
If, after all this time, you're still this excited about what you do for a living, you've made some great choices in life. I hope I'm as happy with my job when I'm his age.
Matt Parker should do a review on this calculator!
You just gotta love the enthusiasm of Klein bottle guy :D
Only Cliff would have something like an electric slide rule. His videos are always so awesome.
Thanks for helping keep the slide rule alive!!
This is a lot different than the electric slide I was taught...
Underrated comment
True, but at least it's more widely-practical.
It's electric!
+Noel Goetowski Never underestimate the unbridled power of the electric slide.
You gotta feel it
Lol: "Look at that! Two times two point five is... almost exactly five!"
I LOLed at "almost exactly 5." Classic slide rule humor.
Subtitles at the beginning:
[Happy smile from Cliff Stoll]
Of course Cliff owns an electric slide rule. Because why wouldn't he?
6:44 It looks like someone worked in the NSA :D ...
i dont get it XD
Sticker of the NSA behind those tools.
Probably. He became "famous" for capturing some hacker who broke into a computer at Berkeley National Lab (which has a lot of confidential data). During this period he worked togheter with the NSA,FBI,CIA and other "big guys".
together *
So they gave him a sticker instead of medal of honor/
Cliff Stoll videos are the best videos. Brady, you need to arrange a drawing for the chance to have a beer with him in his basement.
I love this guy, please do more videos with him
What a friggin' nerd. :P
This is almost as dorkably loveable as the calculator unboxings.
If you are not filled with excitement by the thumbnail, you're doing it wrong.
ahhh love hearing the voice and enthusiam of this klein bottle freak
This is a magnificent man that this world does not deserve. Ability to find interest and enthusiasm in almost anything is a beautiful thing.
I love how this guy is known as Klein bottle guy or Mr Kleinbottle
*sees thumbnail
"ITS THE KLEIN GUY!!!"
*clicks on video
*was not disappointed
Klein/10
Awww I love how the captions say “happy smile from Cliff” ❤️
I aspire to be this guy!!!! He is just so genuinely excited abut what he does and I freaking love it!
could you make a mobius slide rule?
Circular slide rules, with scales that wrap all the way around in a continuous loop, are already a thing. So... maybe?
You could, but having only one side would be a disadvantage. The back side of a high-end slide rule has a whole bunch of additional scales (for doing high-end math.)
I'm a simple man. I see Cliff Stoll in the thumbnail, I click the video and give it a like.
One of the best explanations of a slide rule yet!
Seriously, the world needs more of this guy. The only reason I clicked this video is because of this guy. He's brilliant!
reminds me of doc brown. i love it.
Is this the Klein Bottle guy
Nevermind, just read the description
Really enjoyable to watch. As a youngster I made a linear slide rule, but with zero in the middle and negative numbers to the left. As I was learning algebra at the time, it was very helpful in understanding addition and subtraction of combinations of positive and negative numbers.
gotta say Cliff Stoll is my favorite numberphile feature
Yes, it's the Klein Bottle man!
first i thought "why would i want to watch that video, it sounds boring"
then i saw who's in it :D
