Whenever I see Cliff, I click.
also, that story at the end about his dad is wonderful. :')
I loved the story about his dad
I just saw him in real life three days ago!!! I'm still scratching my head at what it means to take the complement of a knot.
Well, you just smile and say thank you.
Well, the complement of a knot is clearly a not ;)
Wikipedia says some stuff about it, but I don't know anything about topology, and just hearing the word "manifold" gives me a headache, so I don't think I understand it any better :P
I think it means the whole space but the knot. From the set theory perspective.
The complement of the trivial knot is the space minus a circle. Now say you get a chain around that circle, you cannot remove it in a sense. So topologically, it's not the same as the whole space.
There you have it. Cliff Stoll is proof you don't need alcohol to have a good time! :D
I’m not sure if that proof can be verified
24 years sober, going on 25 next month
Can confirm
Here's your proof:
Cliff Stoll.
QED
Science > alcohol
Cliff Stoll did a looot of acid back in the day.
Cliff Stoll is favorite person
Agreed. It’s clear that he loves the world of mathematics, and is enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge. I wish he was my professor.
Would big brother say that? :)
??
Why do I get the feeling that Cliff would lose his last two remaining marbles if you asked him about the Olympic rings?
I get the feeling he'd have things to say about those marbles as well; best not bring them up.
The olympic rings form a chain, they could be borromean if you rearrange them, numberphile has a video about it
??
Oh man that ending, who's cutting onions
??
the end broke me into tears!
♥ one of the very best numberphile endings!
I'd love to have Cliff as a neighbour. Miss my Dad, too, and I'm 71.
I'm 17 and you are 71. I would like to ask you that what will you do if you were 17.
71 and on youtube, i would love to hear your story
I'm just glad he is alive in the same world as me!
??
It's VERY VERY touching the way this professor feels about math, life and his dad! Really, that video made me smile, laugh and even cry a little bit. Thank you for this, my week started great!
He's not even a professor. He has an undergrad degree in astronomy but I think his most famous job was as a sys admin for a national lab. He's the definition of an amateur genius.
Apparently I’m wrong about the PhD. Shows what I know!
false.
I'm thankful for wonderful parents who raise wonderful children.
I've observed that people who are raised to be curious (like mathematicians, scientists, philosophers, historians etc.) tend to be a lot less hateful and judgemental, and thus a lot more kind and accepting.
The irony is, my own comment is kinda judgemental even though I call myself "curious"....
??
Cliff never fails to inspire me.
I'm a 26 year old who has never drunk alcoholic beverage and now I have even more motivation to continue avoiding alcohol. Thank you Cliff.
Any small amount of alcohol won't hurt you. You should at least try it at some point in your life.
Some alcohol is really delicious. You should just drink it without ever having enough to become drunk.
People who say they drink alcohol for the taste are just snobby drunks. In the biz it's called "denial"
~ Says someone who has never tasted 20-year-old tawny port.
I am 20 and alcoholic and drug addict!
This guy makes me smile... and Brady's pretty cool too.
I don't know why but the Professor looks to me like a mix between Doc Brown and James Halliday (From the Ready Player One Movie)...
@@unknown360ful I can definitely see the resemblance there. Cheers!
??
Numberphile videos shouldn't be making me cry
Yessss i really needed more cliff stoll in my life today!
??
I love this man, I really do.
The way he makes you feel with his joyful teaching is just beautiful.
And the story at the end, i would say that even in it's simplicity, it was one of the best story i've heard in my 21 years of life. And The fact that it comes from an extraordinary man like Cliff Stoll, just makes it astoundingly beautiful
A neon Klein-bottle would be nice ;)
retepaskab I don't think that's possible. You could theoretically make it look like a Klein bottle, but the geometry prevents it from functioning properly
How would that even work?
I love Cliff's videos, he's so happy and wholesome and joyful.
Glad you enjoy them - here's our Cliff playlist --- ua-cam.com/video/BDEo5XpZcXo/v-deo.html
I just want to go to Cliff Stoll's attic and dig my way through all the stuff in there
Probably just a bunch of Klein bottles and neon signs lol
No, the Klein bottles are stored under the house. ;)
oh my lord that would be amazing
??
I'm a simple person.
I see Cliff Stoll, I click.
Simple guide to a happier life.
You mean Klein bottle guy?
false.
Cliff is such a unique and special person. I bet it's awesome being his friend.
Cliff is a national treasure
I love Cliff. It's hard typing this with happy tears in my eyes thinking about how great Dads can be sometimes.
"unless you're an electron" :D
To be fair, all circuits are knots to electrons.
I think it's really cool that Cliff's dad wouldn't let him have alcohol before he was old enough, and that Cliff seemed to really love him for it. He must have been a great man, and look how well his son turned out! Great video!
Cliff deserves a toast. I will toast to him a long and happy life as I down some orange juice with my supper. What an inspirational guy. The only thing he could have added is that if you pick any two rings of the Borromean type you find they don't link to each other and yet you cannot take the set a part.
Cliff that was an incredibly story, your father sounds like an amazing man and it warms my heart to hear that after all these years and with your father gone now, you still honor him by sticking to what he told you so long ago. You are an incredible man cliff
This man is so loveable and endearing.
Such a sad and beautiful ending about Cliff's father.
I love Cliff so much, always enjoy seeing his pure joy in the videos. Never fails to put a genuine smile on my face
This is so weird. I’m literally walking around the house finding things to make borromean rings with when this was uploaded
Do you have a glue gun, string, and magnets?
Key rings, (you might have to bend them a little though.
It’s a sign man
Cliff is the best person living
Now that Hawkins is gone, Cliff does not even have much of a competition left.
Well you have Stephen Fry, Richard Dawkins, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Christopher Hitchens, Steven Pinker, Jordan Peterson and many more!
+Miguel del Pino Uhm Hitchens is sadly not with us any longer.
@@migueldelpino7894 you had me with the first two. Disgusted by the last one.
Cliff is seriously one of the greatest communicators for maths/science there is, he's just so passionate and enthusiastic, and what a wonderful human moment the last 2 minutes were.
A quick story from Cliff about his personal life to warm our hearts.
We love you Cliff.

Happy Ballantine's day!
I'm celebrating with Beeromean Rings.
I suddenly have a great reverence for Cliff Sr. What a great lesson to teach.
Perhaps all the awfulness his Dad saw working at the bar he worked, made him keep it from his beloved children...how much better it is to link beer/bar signs to your old man than to alcohol itself :)))
Been a fan of Cliff for decades now, always makes my day to see him in one of the videos. Thanks all.
I love all the Cliff videos. He's always just so excited to tell you (us) about things.
Now I understand why Cliff is such an amazing person. He's very enthusiastic.
Cliff's back😍nice to see you again.
Whenever I'm sad, I watch Cliff Stoll getting excited about topology.
I very nearly cried when Cliff told the story about his dad. This is the kind of wholesome content I'm living for.
I rarely comment on tour videos. But gosh, this once brought tears... Cheers and keep chugging those, amazing vidéos!!!
Always nice to hear from a rare commenter
I love Cliff's enthusiasm. And the story about his Dad... Just amazing
Damn, the old guy looks happy. Cuz he's doing what he loves
This is the first Numberphile video that actually made me cry. :*(
The end story was just so... touching!
IT PULLED MY HEART STRINGS, I LOVED IT
Loved the personal story at the end. It had nothing todo with numbers, so it was surprising but excellently told and touching.
One of the most wonderful Numberphile videos yet. Thanks!
Cliff's excitement/enthusiasm about whatever he's sharing makes the videos with him so much more enjoyable than the other videos (which I tend to already find quite enjoyable)
cliff is always such a joy to hear from. always something interesting to talk about, or just a nice story
I love it when Mr. Cliff appears on this channel, you just know it's going to be a special video that's going to make you feel nostalgic. :')
I need more Cliff videos!! Absolutely love the man and it's great to get to experience his excitement in what he does.
When you think this guy is drunk all the time but you hear the end of the video.
Respect man! Best Numberphile videos are the ones he's in
Man, that story at the end got's me teary eyed.
I cried so hard everything aout this was touching: the fact the borromean rings required each for harmony, the story about his dad. Truly touching
I never thought a video about neon knots would make me tear up
How can you not just love this man!!!Thank you Brady for making these videos.:)
For a second I thought that was gonna be a big box of pretzels! 🥨🥨🍺
I was half expecting Klein bottles.
Hi Katie!
Science with Katie wasn't it though ?
Mister Apple -- after all, Cliff's real name is "The Klein Bottle Guy", not "Stoll"
y'never know what y'gonna get
I always look forward to videos with Cliff. What a wonderful human being he is!
Cliff is one of my heroes. Always a great story. Always a great lesson. Always a great man.
I absolutely love this guy and how quirky and passionate about maths he is. His enjoyment of it has made me enjoy it more too.
Cliff is the kind of guy everyone wants as that Barmy Uncle the family loves.
Wonderful video!
It was really interesting and exciting, and the ending was beautiful. Cliff can make anyone smile talking about math
Cliff’s story about his dad got me to shed a tear, what a wonderful story
This guy is just amazing. I can really feel his passion for all of what he's showing.
Impossible not to love this guy
This guy is always amazing! Beautiful story about his Dad. Those were better times. We must return.
Cliff is a great guy, I love seeing him in my subscriptions feed even though I know almost everything he talks about.
Never expected a Numberphile video to get me emotional. Anyways, this guy is amazing. Love the energy!
:)
He’s so full of joy. He has a child like enthusiasm. I love it!
I love this guy so much. I've never seen anyone so excited about so many different things!
That story at the end is just so great.
I love cliff! Hes so energetic and enthusiastic about, well, whatever really makes him enthusiastic! Its hard to explain but i love this guy!!
this guy, i love how happy he is, made my day!
That story at the end...I'm not sure whether to smile or cry.
Wow, it's so nice to see someone so excited and passionate about a subject they love.
Such wonderfully infectious excitement. Cheers.
The story in the end was absolutely heartwarming.
Cliff is always a treat to watch
Wow, I was certainly not expecting that sort of ending. That was a wonderful story, Cliff
So awesome to hear him talk about his dad at the end.
My dad gave me a sip of beer when I was about 7. Before you go on about “ohh what a bad parent,” it was part of his method of parenting. I tasted it, and I retched at the bitter flavor and spat it out! I asked him, “why did you let me drink it?” He replied with, “because now you’ll think twice before drinking it under age.” He then said, “that’s parenting.” It didn’t stop me from ever drinking beer again, but it did keep me from drinking as a teen. My dad would call that a win in his parenting book!
Awesome video as always cliff💓
I love cliff so much. He's so cool and it's fun to see these videos
He is just so enthusiastic! You can actually see how truly excited he is about these subjects...
The story at the end is a true life lesson! Wonderfull!
This man is wonderful. Thank you for your meaningful, wise words.
I would love to sit and chat with Cliff all day about this stuff. He seems so passionate and excited about it!
Cliff loves to chat
Ballantine Beer was a long time sponsor of the NY Yankees Baseball club and my dad grew up in that area and was a die hard Yankee fan. Of course Ballantine was his beer of choice and it remained so even after he moved to Philadelphia. He definitely drew gazes from the Phillies fans at the bar whenever he ordered a glass.
Cliff is always a joy to watch
That ending just warmed up my heart. I love this guy so much.
Loved the little anecdote about Cliffs father, made me really miss my dad.
This man is just amazing. I dont know how to further describe him it's incredible.
Lovely story Cliff, always a treat to see you on this channel 😁👌
What a neat story at the end. I love this guy
honestly such an amazing, entertaining, and inspiring person to watch. His excitement and sincerity just seems to pour out off of him and infect everybody that sees it.
I watched this video as an impressionable high school student. Everyone around me was drinking. I'm 20 now, and I still haven't had a single sip of alcohol. Not a huge feat but it's something I can be proud of every once in a while. Thank you Cliff.
That's the coolest old man I know :)
I really need more cliff, Please!!!
