I’ve been eyeing these issues of Epic for a few months now. I am a huge Byrne fan and now because you covered this, I won’t wait any longer to start piecing the issues together for what has been published of the story. Thank you for this, Mike.
Thanks Syfy Wire and Mike Avila to bring this great interview to us. I'm huge fan of John Byrne and is fantastic see him. I hope someday Marvel make this Galactus history happens.
People with huge egos that can't back it up are annoying and are easily dismissed. John Byrne , on the other hand, can back it up and isn't annoying. He's quite winning and can be effortlessly charming. He just doesn't suffer fools lightly. And there's more fools than not in this world. It's got to be more annoying to a genius like him than the average beat. He's got a Galactus sized talent and still has tact and manners with a sly sense of humor. John is a good duel citizen, but at heart a good Canadian lad. Local boy done good. What a legend.
I think the first ending is better. It ends things nice and neat. God, I remember saving up to buy those magazines because they were more expensive than regular comics. I think they were like two bucks at the time.
LOVE SEEING OL' JOHN BYRNE TALKING. I REALLY LOVED HIS NON-BELABORED STROKES SO MUCH THAT I DEVELOPED MY FAST DRAWING STYLE WHICH AMAZE MANY FANS TOO. MY RESPECT AND KUDOS TO SUPER 'HERO' ILLUSTRATOR!
His X-Men run is classic. But it's his FF run, to me, that's just AWESOME! And I bought 'EPIC illustrated'... always upset story, and others in magazine, wasn't finished.
Another great sit down with the great John Byrne. The Doom story is similar to the Secret Wars story from 2015. But either story or ending would have been fun. Marvel should definitely buy the story from John Byrne. They could do these stand alone or what if type stories similar to how DC let Neal Adams do Batman Odyssey. Let the creators have fun without affecting the real timeline.
Doom ending with the power of Galactus is a new universe bound to maintaining a cosmic balance is awesome. The whole slave to power may be cliche but come on... COME ON doom doesn't lose but he can't win this is pretty perfect.
This is exactly right. He's literally got to the top of the food chain, and he's doomed (pun) to fulfill a cosmic function by eating. No other purpose for his power, not a ruler of anything, a serf to his appetite/role. Beautiful.
The first version. Doctor Doom being involved in the second version is predictable. He's always after the power cosmic. It's been done before. If it's not Silver Surfer, it was Terrax. Or the Beyonder....it's been done. The first version seems cleaner.
........ although the 1st was the conclusion originally planned, it would be awesome to get a sort merging of the two, or even an all new, all different ending. Thank you for sharing John Byrne with us, PEACE family of the pen.
loved Byrne's art. i followed his art all through the 80's, i grew up on it. definitely love the dr. doom ending for galactus. byrne's doom stories were the best.
There are a lot of bits missing. As soon as Byrne returned, Archie Goodwin asked for the Last Galactus story. Byrne had a number of books he was working on and he wasn’t on the FF. So he wasn’t jumping to force his end on the FF editors. Some point after, Nova was killed, which ended the last Galactus Story. When the End series started, Marvel asked Byrne to do X-Men the end with Chris Claremont. He agreed and Pitched FF the end and Marvel wanted to do it. Marvel hadn’t talked contract and they canceled the Hidden Years. Byrne exited which ending FF The end and the alt Last Galactus Story.
Byrne sketched the definitive Superman for me in ‘86. His comeback for the character wasn’t quite the same but not everyone is as good an inker as Ordway. Grummett, Stern and even Rockafort today still better on the Superman he created.
Both endings sound great to me either way but if I had to choose then I'd probably go with the first ending introducing Nova as the new version of Galactus. Also, it would be interesting to see how John Byrne would develop the suit for Nova as well.
In the new title "History of the Marvel Universe," the story opens with something close to this ending, but it involves someone else along with Galactus that will go into the next universe (the 7th) after Galactus big bangs.
That “ I will destroy their planet” is all wrong in my opinion, I’ve always thought of Galactus as speaking in a calm even tone no matter what the circumstance.
I am a worshipper at the alter of The Byrne. LOL He is my number one favorite comic book artist and writer. I'm a 70's/80's kid--so every other comic/artist/writer--I've always (unfairly) in the back of my mind compared them to JB. As a writer myself (wannabe anyway heh heh) he has always been a great influence in my mind. I used to draw--I've stopped after a injury to my right hand (someday i may return to doing it)--John is the one I tried to replicate. Like the late great King Kirby (My 2nd favorite) John who himself was Kirby worshipper has such power to his stories and characters and panels (that and he draws the greatest set legs on female characters EVA lol). I just couldn't help just to be in love with almost every thing he has done.
Hmmm, I like the idea of Doom as the next Galactus a lot...but I don't like the idea of Ben being killed off...unless, of course, he comes back as a sort of Watcher-figure for the next universe as well, yes? ('The Clobberer', perhaps...?).
New FF movie confirmed, and since Stan and Jack are gone (R.I.P. legends always loved) JB should reboot the comic, sorry to say because there have many great creators on the title, but Byrne would be the pick for a return to glory for Fantastic Four.
When you are a bigger geek and care more about a character than it's creator, who views it as no more than a paycheck, churning out characters for the comic book industrial machine.
John was a comic geek just like us in his younger days. When you've been working in the industry as long as he has - and screwed over (as he feels he has been, more than once) of course it is just a paycheck. But would someone completely jaded have all that cool comic paraphernalia - including original Kirby FF pages - in his studio?
Let’s face it, the Kirby FF had dialogue aimed at eight year olds or at least under twelve , JB’s was more sophisticated in story and art. It was AMAZING
I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SUPER GIANT SIZED ALIEN BEING (GALACTUS) Now I wonder who might be the face of GALACTUS, next is I wonder when might he finally make his appearance in a movie, and I wonder who might be doing the role of Galactus’s voice, and to add I wonder if (GALACTUS) might ever be introduced as a common enemy that other heroes have to deal with?
Definitely ending 1. That would be totally amazeballs - appropriate and satisfying as all get out. Plus - it SOUNDS like a Kirby Story ! Totally bananas & only increasingly epic in scale - fully with a poignant, poetic ending that makes you want to read more of anything this creative mind puts out. Or maybe we should tell you we preferred ending 2 - so Byrne will do the opposite of what we are all hoping (as he is wont to do). Do the uboredictable thing - and do ending 2 Byrne ! :D
Huge Byrne fan from the X-Men days in the 70s, FF and Alpha Flight in the 80s. Byrne rules!
I don't think Byrne gets enough credit for the amount of influence he's had on comics post silver age.
@@Posit_Zero_Blue the only thing he ever did that was shite was the Superman reboot with the sand creature
He also made the definitive Superman comicbook run (in my opinion): Man of Steel.
Ditto!. My favorite all time comic book artist.
i loved next men
I really like the idea of Nova being his final herald until the end of that universe
Big fan of Nova, we don't see enough of her
I’ve been eyeing these issues of Epic for a few months now. I am a huge Byrne fan and now because you covered this, I won’t wait any longer to start piecing the issues together for what has been published of the story. Thank you for this, Mike.
john byrne absolutely the greatest artist/ storyteller of all time ...true GOAT
Byrne has always been my fav.
The first version is the best way to wrap this epic up.. I'm anxiously awaiting.. instant purchase when launched!!
I prefered the first version but the idea of a Doctor Doom with that kind of power is pretty interesting.
John Byrne's run on the fantastic four was second only to kirby and Lee
A
I like the hopefulness of story ending 1 best. I hope to see that Scott and John can make The Last Galactus Story Artist Edition!
I hope it has both endings
Thanks Syfy Wire and Mike Avila to bring this great interview to us. I'm huge fan of John Byrne and is fantastic see him. I hope someday Marvel make this Galactus history happens.
Def ending 1, that would have been super cool.
Agreed. #1 sounds inspired
Same
People with huge egos that can't back it up are annoying and are easily dismissed. John Byrne , on the other hand, can back it up and isn't annoying. God, I remember saving up to buy those magazines because they were more expensive than regular comics. I think they were like two bucks at the time.
I love John Byrne
I really like the first version of the end. I also really love this video and all of the syfy comic related stuff
I love Byrnes Fantastic Four! And you are right! Best run after Stan and Jack!
This sounds amazing! Instant buy if IDW goes through with it!
His art and Storytelling is what got me into Comics in the 80s he’s always been one of my favorites
Somebody commission Mr. Byrne to draw up Doomlactus.
I'd do it, but I'm a cheap bastard.
some of those commissions/art are mine! Very cool to see them used.
John Byrne is the man . thanks very much for your interview ,good job . I can't wait to see the book ...the first end is better for sure .
Byrne seems to have mellowed out in his old, old age.
Thanks for this story. Byrne is my favorite writer/artist, and I loved learning about this.
The Nova ending gets my vote.
His X-Men run is classic. But it's his FF run, to me, that's just AWESOME!
And I bought 'EPIC illustrated'... always upset story, and others in magazine, wasn't finished.
Byrne and Claremont created what is understood as the modern super heroes with their X-men.
HIS RUN ON Wonder Woman IN THE 90'S WAS AWESOME AS WELL AND HE CREATED CASSANDRA SANDSMARK. THANKS FOR THAT
Byrne is Epic
Having Doom finally getting what he wants and becoming the new Galactus would've been awesome
It's ok if it's a bit repetitive. It's just the kind of thing Doom would do. He keeps trying to acquire the power cosmic. Over and over.
Jack Kirby was a genius but John Byrne is just something else
Mike back with some more heat!
Doom ending with the power of Galactus is a new universe bound to maintaining a cosmic balance is awesome. The whole slave to power may be cliche but come on... COME ON doom doesn't lose but he can't win this is pretty perfect.

I like the first ending and am a fan of Byrne loving his run on the FF as well as other stuff he has done.
He did the best Captain America comic also. Perfect in every way, maybe his best. I would save my change and be on that comic book rack every month.
John Byrne is by far my favorite comic artist, he's who I modeled my own art after.
The ending with Nova becoming the next Galactus would've been better: Doctor Doom is used way too much.
Ending one seems more satisfying but either way I'm interested.
........ although the 1st was the conclusion originally planned, it would be awesome to get a sort merging of the two, or even an all new, all different ending. Thank you for sharing John Byrne with us, PEACE family of the pen.
He was my favorite comic artist for most of my life
loved Byrne's art. i followed his art all through the 80's, i grew up on it. definitely love the dr. doom ending for galactus. byrne's doom stories were the best.
Great artist and the best writer of What If type stories.
Both endings are awesome!
John Byrne looks like his drawings😊 My favorite artist of the 80’s
Can’t wait to read that last story!
You are correct to put him on the list with Lee and Kirby.
I prefer the first ending storywise, but, would rather see the second one drawn, cuz I love Byrne's Doom.
Love the PowerPoint presentation! Yeah
There are a lot of bits missing. As soon as Byrne returned, Archie Goodwin asked for the Last Galactus story. Byrne had a number of books he was working on and he wasn’t on the FF. Nice use of the term Hangry .👍👍
The first one. We’ve seen Doom get and steal cosmic power before. Good job with this one. I am going to subscribe.
i hope the ff mcu movie be based on the john’s run
john frogman that or Hickman’s
Nova, goddess of death.
I prefer the first ended
Byrne sketched the definitive Superman for me in ‘86. His comeback for the character wasn’t quite the same but not everyone is as good an inker as Ordway. Grummett, Stern and even Rockafort today still better on the Superman he created.

An anthology The Last Galactus stories with perhaps different versions or maybe perspectives ( featuring the intended original) would make my day.
Ending one. It has the best closure. Which is what an ending should provide.
Gotta get this
I agree that the Byrne years were even better than the Kirby ones, is on my top of the tops.
First ending.
Hey, IDW, make it happen!
Any ending in which Doom is the ultimate power gets a big thumbs up from me
Ending 1 ftw
His FF was classic!
First ending is the best
Ending number 1 for sure.
5:44 Thank you!
1st ending is much tighter
In the new title "History of the Marvel Universe," the story opens with something close to this ending, but it involves someone else along with Galactus that will go into the next universe (the 7th) after Galactus big bangs.
The Green Laser Lol...Franklin Richards is not just someone
That “ I will destroy their planet” is all wrong in my opinion, I’ve always thought of Galactus as speaking in a calm even tone no matter what the circumstance.
I have the Epic run. Always hoped they'd get around to finishing that tale.
Great stuff, I'd like a mix of the two endings.
I am a worshipper at the alter of The Byrne. LOL He is my number one favorite comic book artist and writer. I'm a 70's/80's kid--so every other comic/artist/writer--I've always (unfairly) in the back of my mind compared them to JB. Try and learn with your left you should be able to transfer the skills eventually.
Quite generous. Mr. Byrne recognized that. A distant 2nd.
Doc Doom as Galactus hell yeah now we r talking serious!!!
Byrne's FF run still ranks below Stan & Jack, but I do rate Byrne the #3 comic book creator of all time (Jack being #1 and Stan #2)
ENDING 1!!!!!!!!!!!!
With alternate realities, perhaps both endings running concurrently. Some cool cross over stuff later on.
I also had several issues with tjis story in Epic. I Wish Epic Illustratef still existed ! It was like Marvel's version of Heavy Metal (!)
Hmmm, I like the idea of Doom as the next Galactus a lot...but I don't like the idea of Ben being killed off...unless, of course, he comes back as a sort of Watcher-figure for the next universe as well, yes? ('The Clobberer', perhaps...?).
Like Ending #1 the best. I sincerely hope that this story is finished and that hardcover collection from IDW happens!
New FF movie confirmed, and since Stan and Jack are gone (R.I.P. legends always loved) JB should reboot the comic, sorry to say because there have many great creators on the title, but Byrne would be the pick for a return to glory for Fantastic Four.
Anyone knows what app was used for the tracking on his face in 9:18
MASTER!
I like Byrne's run better than Lee/Kirby!!
Same!

I like the 1st one
I like the Nova becoming the new Galactus ending
IDW PLEASE publish this story. I any many others would buy it day 1. Please get Terry Austin back to ink it.
"Can you imagine a new universe with Doom as its God?" Actually, wasn't that what Hickman's Secret Wars was about?
You are right. Byrne is the only other FF writer/artist to compare with Kirby and Lee.
Let’s face it, the Kirby FF had dialogue aimed at eight year olds or at least under twelve , JB’s was more sophisticated in story and art. It was AMAZING
Oh, ending #1 BY FAR.
I don't know his X-Men and Alpha Flight run was pretty good.
I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SUPER GIANT SIZED ALIEN BEING (GALACTUS)

I WILL BUY IT!!!!!!!( and first ending)
