Celebrating The Amazing Career Of John Romita Sr. | Behind The Panel | SYFY WIRE
Funny how he's known for his renditions of MJ and Gwen. You never hear another superhero artist who has popular renditions of non-hero characters. You never hear a person who has a killer version of Snapper Carr or Karen Page.
That's cause Romita got his start in Romance Comics.
Rest In Peace Mr. Romita 😔
R.I.P John Romita Sr.
To me he is who got me into comics because of his artwork! I was in middle school and i couldn't wait for each issue that and FF!
I'm proud to say I helped my good buddy Mike Avila get this interview!!!!
John Romita I consider my 2nd father!!!
The nicest sweetest man I've ever met.....As well as a phenomenal artist!!!
Really? Wow well done. I salute you sir.
It certainly wouldn’t have happened without you, Mike - and it was one of my favorite days ever to spend the day with John and his wife.
Can I have some money
He's up there with Lee and Ditko as the one's who define Spider-Man 🕸️
RIP, John Romita. The definitive Spiderman.
I never once associated the chains on Luke Cage's original costume with slavery. I always thought he looked badass with the chains tbh lmao.

Yo! No lie, you know what’s crazy? If romita sr’s inspiration for MJ was based on Margret from bye bye birdy then that’s amazing because that one image of margret looks a lot like Kirsten dunst during her time as MJ in the raimi films! What a full circle moment!
The best Spider-Man artist of all time!
Two words :Steve Ditko
@@gerrydooley951John Romita and help carried the Bronze Age of Marvel
@@porkhill6665 call it what you will but Ditko co-created the web- slinger and is the greatest Spiderman artist. However it's subjective.
@@gerrydooley951eh i think romita still made the definitive version of spidermans design
@@porkhill6665 you know the difference between silver and bronze right?
Even though I have 35 year of being a fan of Spider-Man in all medias, whenever I think about the character, I think about John Romita's version. What a great artist.
“Never call me a creator” 😭😭😭 the humility
comic
RIP John Romita Sr. and thanks for the memories.
Romita Sr.'s Mary Jane reveal is still the best art on a female character ever, imo.
Rest in peace John we miss you
Love listening to Romita talk about his career. His part of the Daredevil DVD documentary is great.
Daredevil is my favorite character and I love the fact Romita loves him more than spiderman lol

Sam Soto ink I’ll liuuuuhu j
I love this guy, so humble and so talented. I came to comics after John's era, but I could still feel his Spidey when McFarlane took over.
We'll forever feel his influence
The Toddmeister easily outsold the Jazzy one. 'Nuff said.
Back when Marvel had artists ascend on the basis of experience and merit. Not because of having the right politics, not because of twitter followers, not because of having the right gender or racial identity.
So humble when talking about his work, absolute legend.
"John Romita Sr a Legend and a gentlemen"🙏
Easily in the top 3 of all time, and a great guy too 👌👍💪
Who else should we dive behind the panel with?
@@SyFyWire Bill Sienkiewicz, and Nicola Scott and Bob Layton 👍
@@scottcrosby-art5490 Thanks so much!
Man, I love this guy. My childhood is filled with memories of reading John's Spider-Man. It is my mission in life to pick up an original piece of Romita's art, but unless I win the lottery, it's kind of impossible these days. A true giant in the industry. Thanks for posting!
rest in peace to a legend
Please make this your next long form Documentary. Thank you!
Make a documentary on him. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾.
*SPIDERMAN is the face of marvel ! NOT cap NOT tony but SPIDERMAN !!!!!!!!*
I was a Ditko fan and was broken hearted when he left. Nothing against Romita but to me he will always be the guy who replaced Steve Ditko
Ditco the greatest Romita the Jazzy One.
Romita is the best. He draw the definitive Spider-Man. Made a lot of classics stories, he is a living legend.
Loved watching this.
Love that you loved it
Rest in Power than John Romita Senior
Videos like this are the reason I subscribed in the first place. Thanks for this
Thanks for being a part of the fam ❤️
Kascene2012 .
To me, Romita is the face of Marvel. Not Kirby, not Ditko, not Byrne etc.
Romita IS the face of Marvel.
Wow! Thank you!
Behind The Panel is too good
Great content thanks for creating this one! Mike’s love for the material is obvious👍
I remember 369. I was in high school when it hit the stands. Brilliant backup story.
RIP John Romita Sr. You will be missed
💎A true legend in every sense of the word🕸👑🕸
Romita Sr is such a talented artist and yet humble man. I love his Spidey comics.
Strongest Spider-Man artist. Will always be the greatest to me.
Rip an absolute titan. Truly one of the absolute greatest to ever do it.
Seems like a super stand up guy. I love the Romitas artwork.
The definitive spidey artist in my eyes. There's a lot of great spidey artists but his is the definitive 🔥🔥🔥
John Romita's rendition of Mary Jane Watson is the bomb! I had the biggest crush on her. She was a waifu before there was a waifu. Hahahaha!
One of the greatest character designer of the world of spiderman...
So much respect for this guy
a master of his art form.
I really admire this man.
Romita seems so nice
Thanks SYFY WIRE to make this videos celebrating this master, when he still alive, I hope John stay healthy and happy for a long time. Thanks for your work master.
This incarnation was my introduction into comics at around 6 or 7. This is my quintessential Spiderman
Wonderful video, excellently scripted and great tribute . Thanks
He will be greatly missed 😢
I never once looked at Luke Cages costume and thought of slavery.
This is the creator that I would like to meet the most
I think Romita is my all-time favorite, now that I’m older and my taste has evolved enough to appreciate his brilliance.
Me too. The older I get, the better Romitas art looks and consequently the worse Ditkos looks.
Curious as to why you guys showed golden age Daredevil?
Fantastic! I love Romita, the McCartney of comics, he drew the definitive Peter Parker, enjoy his art trough MMW on a daily basis.
I immediately subscribed. Your content is incredible
When you say, "Ross Andru", you're showing Gil Kane artwork. Actually, you show Jr.'s artwork and someone else's while you're talking about Sr.'s.
Man I've never met him and would love to meet him so badly! Also I gotta own some of his original published artwork, he's such a legend!!
romita snr and ditko, bloody legends
This video convinced me too subscribe this was a really well done video into one of my greatest passions, comic books. So thank you all of you for the amazing video!
Romita sr. IS my favorite spiderman artist of all time. His work , his vision of spiderman is what I think of when I picture him in my mind. Alex Ross is my second favorite spiderman artist, and I think his work besides kirby is influenced by romita ,and you can see it in every rendition of spiderman he does.
🙌
So humble and full of humility. What strikes me is that deep inside as a father he wanted JRJR to succeed on his own. Really strikes me when he said if JRJR failed, they wouldn't talk about comics in the house...Wow..imgaine that..
Rest in Peace Master Romita
Great interview! John Romita is my all-time favorite Spider-Man artist and loved his depiction to female characters especially Maryjanne Watson. I was surprised to hear, however, it was his idea to kill off Gwen Stacy. I feel that was a colossal mistake and they knew it in a failed attempt to bring her back as a clone. Fans were furious! I actually loved the 5-part clone saga! Lol. To this day her death made no sense to me but hey, sometimes you have to accept their decision whether you like it or not
This man defined Spidey in my humble opinion. But I also love what Mcfarlane did.
THE definitive Spider-Man artist!
RIP to the great one
Rest easy JRS
RIP John.
College-age Spidey is my fav.
Great video! Absolute favorite artist. I hope to write him a letter, or meet him someday to tell him this.
Rip
I had the pleasure of meeting my idol in 2002 at WonderCon where I promptly rolled up my sleeve and showed him a Romita-inspired Spidey/Peter duel-head tat design I had done as the faces of comedy and tragedy. He looked at it, shook his head and without missing a beat told me I was crazy. It was a priceless moment. They say never meet your gods, but I was pleased that mine turned out to be like one of my cool, with-it uncles. .... the cool, with-it uncle that bust my chops; ribbing me mercifulously. It was good-natured and he was great, warm, engaging. I met his son a year later at the next WonderCon by accident at the bar so showed him my homage to his dad. He thought it was sick. When I told Romita Jr his father said I was crazy, John shot back, 'Join the party. He tells me that all the time!'
Hilarious and each salt of the Earth. Thank both Johns. For humoring the crazies....wink.
That's a cool story - The Romitas rock, such a cool family. Lee, Ditko, Kirby, the Romitas, and guys who people don't think of like Gerry Conway from this video were like the Beatles of the comic book world. When these guys were there it was the golden age of comics never to return - Those guys had something special during those years that you just can't bottle up. Todd McFarlane did some great stuff too.
This content is the stuff I dream about
Nah. That original look of Luke Cage worked because it was a metaphor for his enslavement by the system.
Can't believe McFarlane is even mentioned with Romita, Ditko and Andru...lmao
9:17 look like Ross Andru panels.I recognize the Cathedral shot. ???
He is one of the reasons I love comic art, and drawing is a hobby I love because of great artists like him.
John's fingers curve like bananas. Were they always like that?
Thank you for your great art thank you you are a. Comic book great to me 😢
The best. Great interview.
The Next Era of MCU Spiderman should be styled in Romita Sr style. Since the first trilogy was largely based on Ditko/Kirby art. Then his final trilogy should be 90s Romita Jr. style which in my opinion is the best Spiderman design.
Love this guy. He's nothing compared to Ross andru though. Just kidding. 😅
I almost spilled coffee on myself when i read your comment LoL!! I STOPPED reading Spiderman when he took over!!
@Realism I He drew Spiderman like he was having a seizure in every panel and he was always standing on his toes LoL 🥺
Why did you make a The Banana Splits movie
One of the best things i love about John Romita Sr. is how beautifully he drew the Boots of spiderman...Totally magnificent!!!
Best spiderman art style hands down
One of greatest easily!!! 🔥🔥💯💯
My favorite comic book artist of all time.
My all time favorite comic artist.
Romita Sr and Gene Colan
I liked the video, but it would have been much better if for some of the images you hadnt used pictures from the earlier versions of the Marvel Masterworks, with his badly burnt liineworkd and horrible coloring. It gives a bad impression of Romitas artwork to anyone that doesnt know better! Particularly hurtful to the eye is that first appearance of Mary Jane, with that horrible reproduction and and all thin lines lost. Perhaps you could redoit with pictures take of the original comics or the newest Masterworks/Omnibus, because it makes me crazy everytime I see it!
Rest in power Mr. Romita
cool artist
rip in power absolute unit
true
@4:10 "I'm doing doodie"
Great video. I always loved Mr. Romita's work. How about a Mark Bagley video? Thanks.
